I never played a YS game before and what a way to start this franchise with one of the best action RPG of the last years. Heck, even the start is exhilarating, with a fantastic rock tune to welcome you in with a bang. Seriously, I was never this excited about running around and fighting in years and that alone made me want to continue playing more and more.

But I'm getting ahead of myself: the game talks about Adol, the main protagonist the series and he's an adventurer who shipwrecks in an island - apparently it's as common as elder's scroll prisoner's theme! The game is set in this island called "The Island of Seiren" and your job is to get out of it alive while saving castaways, protecting your village from enemies and discovering the secrets behind this island in turn.

What fascinated me about the story is that it can literally go anywhere and not feel forced: too many times I played RPGs where the plot just stops in order to tell you another story that has nothing to do with it, but here there's just no real story because your main job is to get out of the island while everything else is an additional, and the more you discover the more you learn about the island, which only makes you more curious to play!
It's been since Berseria I wasn't this curious for a plot before and I can easily spend 5-6 hours playing non-stop!

And it doesn't stop there: the island is huge and the game rewards for exploring it with rewards, crafting materials - there's no money since you're all castaways- fishing spots, questing, etc. There's always something to do here and I NEVER got bored to fight once.

Speaking of combat: it's amazingly fun and fast, showing its 60 fps that really makes it a great experience! The combat is super fast, flashy, rewarding (dodging and parrying in time buffs you) and very responsive: I never felt the game doing something I never intended and the commands can be customized at your leisure. It's almost perfect...if it wasn't for the camera and lock-on that occasionally confuses you by not letting you turn the camera around, forcing you to unlock your target. In fact, the camera is probably the clunkiest thing in the game thus far and it can be troublesome when climbing or when needing to see down below. It's not game-breaking but still a pain to deal with.
Other than that I have no complains about combat: enemies are well balanced for all difficulties and none of their attacks are broken (I tried hard and nightmare and it was quite enjoyable but the exp rates are lower so I got back to normal) and the game is not even stingy with SP and it's kind of encouraged to spam skills in order to kill them and obtain half of the sp back, and it's just so fun!

And how can I forget about the music?! This is usually a subjective thing but HOLY CRAP, the moment I got to the island, and Sunshine Coastline (that's the name on youtube at least) hit, I was like "Oh wow, this is...amazing, time to do some adventuring!". And it's not just one music: many tracks in the game are outstanding and really remarkable! I sincerely recommend checking the OST of the game and it's not something I say all the time!

The game is just so fun...so what's wrong with it? Hmm it's hard to say...for instance while the story is pretty good the characters are your basic anime clichè that really changes nothing - Laxia is your usual tsundere who hates you for no reason, Sahad is your Bara character with a golden heart, Hummel is your silent and mysterious character and Ricotta is your overly cheerful character. The game is filled with clichè characters which are not entirely bad, but it feels like they tried to make anime fans happy first...I mean did we REALLY need to see Adol peeking on Laxia naked at the beginning, with her getting all mad for X hours of gaming - even though it's later explained but it's still crap-?
    No we didn't.

Also while the bosses are challenging and fun, the enemies tend to die rather quick unless you play on higher difficulties, which makes them more resilient. In addition you have a 3-type system where depending on your type of hits you can break enemies...however considering you can have 3 characters at all times, and the 6 characters are of 3 types each, you can essentially have one of each everytime - and it's encouraged considering you get more rare materials.

The map is also kind of confusing...it will take a while before you can learn how to use it, and there's a serious lack of voice acting in the game - at least in the English version - and the graphics aren't really that great, looking like ps3 era graphics.

But I would just nitpick at this point: I cannot stop recommending this game for anyone needing for a fun action RPG with some surprisingly good plots and overall a clichè but likable roster of characters.
And considering it's also pretty long - easily 40-50 hours on your first playthrough - it's a good value for your money! Give it a shot!

I’ve been playing Ys game for about 10 years now. I got Ys Seven before my first deployment and played through it very fast. Since then I’ve been addicted beating every Ys game save for V. Ys VIII does not disappoint. The fighting is amazing, the characters are great, the music is outstanding and the story is superb. If you find this game on the shelf pick it up, you won’t regret!

The model of YS SEVEN becomes perfect with more playable content in YS VIII,. YS VIII is a great game for me.
It also has a lot of shortcoming. The weak graphics, unnatural body movements and so on. But all of these, you will be amazed by the greatness of the game at first. Then you wil think —— Why it can not be better?
So Sony, please acquire Falcom immediately.

    Graphics 6-7/10:
The graphics are clearly outdated. At least one generation maybe even two. Although I have to say that DEVs made kind of the best out of it and present still a somewhat decent result. Enemies look good, effects are amazing but the details are crucially lacking and the character models are disappointing. In times of crystal clear 4K HDR games you have to downrate this game in comparison to other candidates in this genre.

    Sounds and soundtrack: 10/10
This is a no-brainer for me. I really like the fighting sounds and the general atmosphere the game provides. The soundtrack is pushy pumping while taking care of emotional parts. I really like it!

    Controls 9/10:
Controls are decent. Combos can be executed with ease after a while. Menu-ing is standard but still easy enough to feel comfortable. The usual jumping, strafing and fighting is smooth and without lags. It feels that you are always in control of the movement and the game responds to the needs. No complaints so far. Still nothing special also.

    Story & Mechanics 8/10:
The story is okay. Its nothing spectacular but still provides enough basis to create a nice surrounding for a group of ppl who are stranded at an island and try to get life going preparing for an escape. Character development and crafting is well made and somewhat interesting although I miss the red string, whereass the sidequest are really lacking. In some parts of the game I feel too much disturbed by defense missions, offense missions or just a cut-loads of dialog that goes for an hour. I like story but if the story is thin I really dont need one hour at once of it. After all the mix is okay, some parts are optional and the game doesnt get too boring.

    Sum up: 8/10
The game was worth the buy. I dumped 20hrs straight in two sessions into this game. I liked the chracters and the mechanics. On PS4 Pro I didnt encounter lags. Sound output is decent, the soundtrack is pumping. Although the story is a bit thin and the graphics are clearly outdated I would recommend this game. The price tag of 60 is highly debatable and I wouldnt recommend to spend such a high price for it. Wait for a sale. Everything around 40 and less seems acceptable to me.

    Enjoy!

The map is a little confusing.

    Bottom Line:

YS VIII is excellent. It does look dated as if it was intended to be a PS Vita game first but if you can look past that you’ll get a great Action RPG that while does take a few hours to get going, once you get going it is very gripping and hard to put down. The story starts off simplistic enough but ends up telling a very interesting story about two protagonists. Without spoiling anything, I was legitimately surprised at the twists it threw and it is very well written. The cast is great and I liked all the characters, the ease of character switching made it very good too.

The soundtrack is fantastic as well. The music sticks with you long after you’ve beaten the game and it really set the atmosphere upright. The combat is fun and fluid and has tons of special attacks and the game doesn’t hold back on boss fights.

Despite it’s aged look, it is well worth the money and a great action RPG with replayability.

It's fun, pure and simple. I was entertained and looked forward to playing the game whenever I could get the chance until I beat it. This is the kind of game that makes you realize that a game doesn't need to spend an absurd amount of money on graphics in order to be good.

Graphics 6/10 - It's dated, this is that common last gen lower textured standard Anime Style JRPG graphics that have been around since the PS2. However the colour pallete is well suited to the environments and it services the game well enough. Overall it's actually pretty good once you take into consideration you can also get this game for the PSVita.

Sound 8/10 - The sounds in the game are done well enough. By no means are you going to get Final Fantasy level epic orchestral symphony tracks but the music is solid, there are several really good tracks and most importantly it adds to the game instead of detracting from it. The background music never overtakes the action, it doesn't become a distraction.

Gameplay 9/10 - The gameplay is simple and straightforward but varied enough especially as you will want to switch gear around to best suit your environment. You can play as any of the members in your party so if you don't like how one character handles you can play as one that suits you. While there are some challenging areas of the game, especially if your looking to find all the treasure chests however nothing was overly frustrating or required a guide nor did it ever feel like I had to waste a ton of time grinding and its balanced well enough I never felt like I had to play a certain character to progress unlike alot of action JRPGS where your basically forced to play as the main protag because they have an ability you need to get through boss fights. Overall it's the gameplay and Story that will have you coming back. It's just fun to play.

Story 8/10 - As I mentioned earlier this is by no means a summer blockbuster and personally I've never been a fan of stories that use time and or character jumping as it usually winds up filling the plot with massive holes or just making things a convoluted mess. However Ys VIII manages to keep everything moving forward and cohesive while doing so. Overall I found myself with grand adventure feeling and was entertained during my play. There was a few anime tropey things but they were not overdone and it avoided the whole "OMG main protag you are just the best" constant gushing, the characters felt rounded out well enough, even the npc survivors you meet along the way and overall it avoids the pitfall I find in a lot of these games where npc's and party members tend to fade away the moment your done with their "arc".

Overall 9/10 - This is one of those games that is better than the sum of its parts because everything just comes together to give you a good, fun and entertaining experience.

    Story:
Story and narrative are pretty good for jRPG standards, every time the game starts to feel like it has overstayed its welcome it throws you another twist to keep you interested.

    Characters:
Probably the best point of the game, every character in this game has its own story and interacts with the other NPCs in interesting ways. This applies to both party members and townspeople.

Granted, they could pull this off because there is only one town in the game, there are very few NPCs (around 30) so they could focus on quality instead of quantity.

In any case, the sidequests the NPCs provide are never time-wasting chores, but actual side quests with story that serve to deepen the game's lore and form bonds with the protagonist and with one another, and sometimes even directly affect the main quest.
On short, Ys8 is about quality, not quantity.

    Gameplay:
Tight, and skill based real time combat. Some bosses are challenging but if the player learns the patterns and weak spots they can be beaten with no need of level grinding.
It also has a crafting system which I initially thought it would be a chore, but in the end it was not the time-wasting gimmick it usually is in other titles, but no. It hardly ever requires to grind for materials thanks to a trade system that allows you to get materials you may be missing in exchange of others you may have too many of.

Graphics: I will not lie, it is an ugly game. I would say it belongs to the early PS3 era. The art is not bad itself. But the game's graphic engine is just too dated to make it justice.

If you enjoy jRPGs, specially the ones that focus on character development and interactions (Eg: Tales Of...). Then you will enjoy this one,

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A game that had potential to be so much more better. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike the game, I really enjoyed the gameplay itself, but the story, it was lacking, it could had been so much better. Throughout the game the story progress is VERY SLOW, making the game story feel dull and boring, we're only given small hints of the story after every few camping while exploring the island, the story is very slow pace and finally starts showing some promising signs around 50% into the game(after you find Dana). But even after finding her the story progress was still slow. The game could had been so much better if Dana was introduced more early in the game about 20-30% in would be great and made the story a lot better in ways. With the way how Dana's past story will effect the future they could had worked on in a lot better and made more story out of it. Only problem I had with the game was the story, it could had been more interesting and fun, but overall it was a really fun game to play. Out of all the other YS I played (Ark of Nap, seven, Oath in Felghana, Memories of Celceta), YS VIII story was my least fav. The graphic and gameplay was outstanding, oh and the last boss background was truly beautiful. Would had been a perfect 10 if they just made the story work out better. Expand

Everything about this is a 10/10. Gameplay was perfect, Story was perfect, Graphics were perfect. One thing about action RPG's is that they can easily feel one-note with the gameplay but ys viii really did that with the battle system. The ending also got me in my feelings. Major +

    I absolutelylove this game.
The story is farily simple but enjoyable.
But everything else about the game is so much fun.
The feeling of adventure that you get from exploring the island is amazing, and the combat is easily one of the best.
Not to mention it has great music, has usual in the series.

The combat is fun but again not as good as those on the previous engine but this game is heavily bogged down by certain elements. The characters whilst being likeable are rather uninteresting and some are very forced.

The big failure is that this is an action rgp and the action is really stop start. You explore via a terrible map system and then when you get to your destination, you get called back to base. Sometimes this is automatic, sometimes it is fast travel but it always feels like an interuption. I don't like the fishing but I have no way of knowing if the treasure chests found fishing are needed, as in past Ys games chests hold items to advance in the game.

The scenery whilst nice, I don't find to be as pleasant as SAO, Zestiria, Berseria, etc The whole base thing just feels like a waste of time. Collect ore, forge weapons etc. It is just another chore between the action. It feels like an action RPG that sidelined the action too often.

Now when I play Ys 8 which I have been doing very slowly over a couple of years now, I often get a bored. When I played Ys Origin, I couldn't put it down. Even the grind was fun in Ys Origin and I hate grinding as a general rule.

I am also playing Oath in Felghana and Memories of Celceta at the moment and to me they are way more fun.

I hope they develop a new engine, or do something more fun with the new engine because this 3D open world Ys does not work as well as the top down Ys games of recent past.

The other thing is that every new area has an intro where you walk slowly supposedly in awe at the scenery but it really just doesn't look that nice that I need to wait an extra 10 seconds. Again there are lots of little things like this slowing the action. The stories of Adol's dreams being another and worse, they are damn boring

It is a nice production and feels good to play, with reasonably tight controls but it it is like Ys with the fun stripped out. I find it a bit bad for Ys and Tales of that the latest entries are ranking so high because these new games are pretty **** and I feel people will be put off previous games because of this.

Ys 8 is not as good as the previous entries that I mentioned and same with Tales of Arise, it is totally boring compared to Zestiria and Berseria (again that I mentioned above).

Even Tales of Vesperia, which was a bit of a boring slog at times is better than Arise. It just feels like these new entries are really putting a dint in the long running franchise's. If I was new to Tales of and Ys and bought 8 and Arise as my entry, I would never play another and I think that is a shame for newcomers.

It's a sensational game, fast moving, fun to play, great songs and characters. Very nice Japanese original dub (Free DLC). The combat is very good and not tiring. It also has an extra game to extend the experience. The story is great, I recommend.

Frame-rate rarely if ever suffers with intense action scenes during combat. Most importantly, for me, you can save the game at any time. I absolutely hate games which make you find save points, with very rare exceptions. Who has time for that? There is fast travel to previously visited locations and all the nice quality of life you would expect from a polished game.

When it comes to story and characters, Ys VIII is up there with the best that the Final Fantasy series has to offer. Laxia in particular is a brilliantly realized character who has a fully realized character arc during the game, as does the titular Dana. But all the characters are great and fully fleshed out. They are never shrill and annoying like many inferior Japanese RPGs. You can talk to anyone during your adventure and they'll always have something interesting to say.

The mark of a true genius RPG is when you think you have almost finished it, and then you realize you are only about half-way through! The story is absolutely compelling, with mysteries to solve and time travel playing an integral part. I put 60 hours into Lacrimosa of Dana on my first play-through and finishing this game was a bittersweet experience that brought a tear to my eye. I wanted to stay in this world with my new friends forever. And that's what a real RPG should be like. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Finished the game yesterday. I have played every Ys game to date at this point.

Here's my top level opinion. It felt like this game was developed at three different times, and as a result, while the "game" is excellently done, the story isn't as good as it probably should have been.

Without spoiling things: Adol, if you know Ys, is the same: looking for adventure. Only this time he's on a ship that gets attacked, and he and the others end up on an island that has a reputation for making ships and people disappear. You're adventuring as you look for a way off the island.

It's SO hard to not spoil the game, so I marked the spoiler box. I tried. But the only real way to understand is to hear at least snippets of things.

Gameplay was awesome, especially the defense mechanic. There's never a time when battle is boring or dull, except when you're using a certain technique Dana has "Gritika". Music is also awesome and memorable in some parts, not so much in others, but it's well done. Voices were also well done, in my opinion.

Story is where it breaks down. It starts out as your usual shipwreck/stranded storyline, then branches into a survival situation (there's a "tower defense" type mechanic in the game at certain parts) which gets slightly annoying as you're forced to rush back to the base to help.

But then Dana's story kicks in and at first, it's truly exciting and engaging, but then they start throwing deus ex machina after deus ex machina at you. Things just don't make sense and despite their attempt to explain what's going on, it just derails into a complete cluster of a story. The ending was bittersweet, but because you don't understand how it happened, it ruins what should otherwise be an awesome game. People turn into deities and immortal beings with no real explanation. Fairies come and go with no real logic. The final character Adol meets and the story they tell....I challenge you to not roll your eyes at how lazy this was done.

It really felt like they tried to tell a story and got lost, ran out of time and just threw stuff in there.

So why's it an 8? Because 90% of the game is excellent. It's just ruined by the last 3-ish hours, thus 2 points off felt appropriate.

The game is certainly worth the money. I got 60 hours out of one playthrough and got the good ending "Dana Forever!". Sister Nia is superior, but I digress.

I also hope newer titles go for a more improved artsyle, or showcase better graphics overall. The opportunity is there. They should take it.

What's also interesting is the game can't maintain a constant 60fps, not even on my PS4 Pro, which is extremely disheartening when it's clear this version is nothing but a dump of the PSVita release with a resolution bump. It isn't that demanding, they just did a bad job optimizing it (if they did any effort at all beyond dumping it on PS4 and letting its hardware brute force the Vita engine to meet - not maintain - their framerate goal).

There's a decent amount of noise being made about the translation. I don't see the issue with most of it, there are some incorrect item descriptions but that isn't poor localization so much as it is just pure ineptitude when it comes to labeling. People are complaining about things like "My name is Alison, please just call me Alison" like it's the worst thing they've ever read in what's essentially an imported JRPG with a translation slapped on. Castlevania 2 is bad localization. This is that humorous Engrish that comes from adequate translations and to me is part of the charm of these games. Making it perfect English is going to ruin even more of the charm of Ys, I don't know why people are picking a bone over this when 1) the story sucks anyway (the shoebill is the best character in the game) and 2) the technical issues are genuine issues. The intent with the translation here was clearly "Ys Meets Kung Pow".

There is also some enemy scaling involved - as you get stronger, enemies do more damage as well, to a certain point. Just like Oblivion. Enemies still maintain that traditional Ys format of giving less XP as your level gap grows, so despite becoming more threatening (again to a point) as you level, enemies give you less and less for exterminating them. If this combination isn't a cardinal sin in RPGs, I don't know what is.

Giving it a 7 regardless because the generally outstanding soundtrack and gameplay is enjoyable enough anyway. It's no Oath and while some of the pieces of a Ys experience are still here, it certainly doesn't feel like Ys anymore, which has been the case for me ever since they adapted a party system.

These battles are very fast paced and can be very difficult, requiring great timing with reaction speeds, attacking and dodging, but are very satisfying and rewarding. The system requires you to use different types of weapons to defeat different types of enemies, requiring strategy to defeat larger groups of enemies, especially later in the game.

The exploration in the game is great as well. The premise of the game has your protagonist on a deserted island, where you build a base using items and materials that you find on the island. Exploring the island for items and building an improved base is addicting and fun, especially as you unlock items that allow for you to explore more areas on the island (such as being able to breath underwater, climb, etc.)

Although the action and exploration is great, the story and several parts of the game are deeply flawed. The premise of being on a deserted island and trying to find a way off is interesting, but instead it becomes a cliched, dull story with painfully awkward dialogue, and without giving away spoilers, gameplay segments with a different character that are uniteresting and requires lots of backtracking.

Overall, Ys VIII is a game carried by excellent, fast paced and fun combat and rewarding exploration. On lower difficulties, the combat resembles games like DMC, and is an absolute blast even if you are not a fan of the genre. But, veterans can find enjoyment on higher difficulty levels, where forming a strategy on the fly is essential in combat encounters. It's a shame that the story isn't good, but I guess this is common among games in the Ys series (this is my first game).

The gameplay is a lot of fun and the fighting is very fluid and not clunky at all. This was my first Ys game and I played through with the difficulty on Hard, and I found this gave a pretty good balance of difficulty where the game was challenging but seldom frustrating. If I could go back in time and advise myself on the difficulty setting before starting the game, I might say to try the next level of difficulty just to get the extra challenge from it, but Hard mode was definitely very well balanced as far as giving the style of gameplay that it claims to. There are many innovative ways of keeping up the challenge level as the game progresses and the fighting never really feels burdensome, which is quite a feat. The music is amazing and really adds to the experience. This is not a Triple A game, but it hangs with the best of them, as I put this game on the same level as games like Persona 5 and The Witcher 3, and in fact this game wins out over both in certain areas. If I had to list areas for improvement, there could certainly be more time given to character development, as many the characters can be a bit one dimensional, and their stories could be a bit more interesting. However, overall, the game still works well with the amount of character development provided and is an absolute blast to play, so I give it a 9.5 out of 10. Expand

This sentiment aptly describes my experience with the game - having never played any game in the series before, I found this game pretty mediocre, and it did little to pull me in.

Admittedly, I come at Ys VIII as someone who prioritizes engaging gameplay and mechanics over a good story - however, I can't say I skipped any of the cutscenes in a game like Ghost of Tsushima, for example, whose story had me enthralled for most of its story. And while that game featured some cliché story beats, it was consistently gripping. By comparison, Ys VIII opens with what I've found to be an obnoxiously expected anime trope - a man bashfully approaching a naked female party member bathing in a river. This, I feel, set a poor precedent story-wise from the start, and my apathy towards the game stayed fairly consistent throughout my time playing the game. On top of this, suffering through dealing with a silent protagonist surrounded by schlocky, drivel-spewing side characters felt like a pointless waste of time.

For all my complaining, and despite not finishing the game, Ys VIII has flashes of excellence - the Metroidvania-esque revisiting of areas inches towards being interesting, but it doesn't carry that true thrill of re-exploration solidified by its superiors (such as Symphony of the Night). Additionally, this game's combat, too, is worthy of praise - while not being outstanding, the developers' attempts at creating engaging real-time combat mechanics are worthy of praise. When talking about solely the game's combat and technical aspects (it loads quickly and doesn't drop any frames), I believe the game has so much going for it. Unfortunately, when combined with other frustrating aspects of the game (including its linearity, which I had not mentioned until now), Ys VIII feels lacking.

Overall, Ys VIII is somewhat enjoyable, but did not do enough to keep me interested in returning to the world it had created. It comes close to being great in many ways - it is technically stable, its combat is solid, and the Metroidvania aspects of its gameplay show promise. But its linearity, occasionally repetitive nature and its relatively thin and cliché narrative leave something to be desired.

As a side note, I paid a full $80 CAD for this game, and while I could see myself recommending it at a lower price, I absolutely cannot condone paying $80 for a 2017 port of a game for the Vita. Don't buy it unless it's discounted (Note to self: Lesson learned).

Fluid gameplay, tough but fair combat, great story, epic adventure, and nice music. The dialogue is fine and enjoyable, often humorous. The combat system is unique and works very well. You can be underleveled and beat a boss with pure skill. This game should be way more popular. The only thing probably holding it back is the graphics but they manage to be detailed enough.

The combat is fun but everything else about this title is utter garbage. All the characters are one-dimensional and the story is contrived generic nonsense. Still, I tried to muscle through until the onslaught of anime **** got to be too much, those of you who enjoy sexualized children and rampant misogyny might enjoy the game but everyone else should steer clear.

A pleasant surprise that this turns out to be so good. The battle is really fun. The story is well told. I totally didn't expect this from the Ys franchise.

If you’ve never played a previous Ys game, like me, this is a great game to experience despite the long history and number in its title. Lasting just over 40 hours for me, this is a relatively easy recommendation for even none JRPG fans who prefer more mechanically driven games.

The visuals are a little outdated but that can’t take away much from the rest of this gem, that.

While obviously not without its flaws, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is one of the stronger, albeit more obscure, JRPG offerings to hit the PS4 this year.
