An enjoyable entry in the Yakuza series. I'd say it ranks right in the middle of it's predecessors. Not as good as 2 or 4, but better than 1 and 3. The side stories were a nice addition. I'm not sure why this title has been metabombed in terms of user scoring, this is one of the more beloved entries of the series. It's a less refined and focused experience than Yakuza 0 but does a LOT of unique things from a series standpoint that has not been replicated since. Also has an amazing bosses and music.

This game will always hold a place in my heart. I get so nostalgic when I play in Fukuoka city. Akiyama is my favorite character hands down but when he and harkura investigate Park-san's murder the story line gets amazing, Hollywood couldn't write a story this good. I think the whole yakuza series is a solid 8. The ending what harkura said about kiryu was so good, love the game. Expand

I typically take 10/10 reviews with a grain of salt, but in this case, it is well deserved. I am a big fan of the Yakuza series and have played every entry in the main series thus far. With that being said, I consider Yakuza 5 to be the embodiment of everything that makes the Yakuza series great. It never takes itself too seriously, and is by far the most over-the-top entry in the series.I typically take 10/10 reviews with a grain of salt, but in this case, it is well deserved. With that being said, I consider Yakuza 5 to be the embodiment of everything that makes the Yakuza series great. It never takes itself too seriously, and is by far the most over-the-top entry in the series. With Yakuza, as much as I love the games and as great as the story is, there are times when get tired of the fight to fight to fight nature of the storyline, and look to mini-games to mix up the tedium. This is where Yakuza 5 shines. Each character has their own unique mini-game(s) that are enjoyable and help keep the game fresh. While I can see that some may be turned off by Haruka's story, being that it is rhythm game oriented, I thoroughly enjoyed it and felt that, for what it was, they did a great job.
If you are a Yakuza fan, you will be doing yourself a disservice by not playing this masterpiece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Yakuza 5 takes what made the other series cool and forces the player to participates in them regardless if they enjoyed it or not. Nothing about the combat has been added or upgraded in this game compared to Yakuza 4. Everything you learned in the previous game you have to learn again through the same beats as before because "You got so good as being a taxi driver".

Each side story comes with a new mini-game that forces the player to partake in regardless if it was enjoyable before. I loved how in Part 2 you get to fight a bear which is awesome. But I was pulling my hair out when I had to become a hunter for several hours before I can fight the bear again. Everything came to ahead when in a Yakuza game (Mostly about mobsters and beat-em-ups), that now I have to become a pop-star and learn beauty tricks about how awesome Chinese Medicine is the best medicine. I truly wish I just skipped Yakuza 5

Another good game in the franchise. However for the first time I feel fatigue. To clarify: Yakuza 5 has the most protagonist and locations. Nothing is bad but the overall story does not wow me and I did all the side content for the characters (side quests, taxi, hunting, idol gigs and baseball) which took away from the main story. It became hard to finish the game. Also while I truly liked Tatsuo Shinada and Shun Akiyama you could skip their stories more or less without mayor impacts. The story is set in 6 parts (I would say 7 but game says 6). The mayor plot evolves around the Omi Alliance chairman that is terminally ill. The Omi Alliance are the rivals of the Tojo Clan and both are the only top dogs in the Yakuza world. The next chairman will not be someone who is interested in peace and so the situation can end in a full fledged conflict. In preparation the Tojo Clan under their chairman Daigo Dojima makes alliances with (much smaller) Yakuza clans across Japan as poison pill to avoid war with the Omi alliance. Meanwhile Kazuma Kiryu has abandoned the orphanage to give no taint to his beloved adopted daughter idol career and other children's future. He works under a new name as taxi driver but the past catches up again. Taiga Saejima return to prison to serve the rest of his time before becoming a captain in the clan when strange changes happened. Haruka is meanwhile on the way to become a popular idol and managed to reach the final of the Princess League a talent TV show that is a breakthrough for the winners. Shun Akiyama is just trying o set up a new branch of Sky Finance when he is draw into the events. Lastly we have Tatsuo Shinada who struggles in life as he was a rising baseball star which was framed for manipulating games despite being just transferred and played 1 game. Despite being innocent and no evidence against him he was banned for live. Those individuals are the protagonist of the story. Like I said the story is well done but maybe a bit to much. Here I would say less it more and it could be condensed. The characters however are excellent and I like the old and new ones. This was never a complain in the series and I returned always for this. The strengths of the Yakuza games are the activities. You have tons of side quest and mini games. Be it a battle coliseum, poker, black jack, shogi, bowling, darts majong, koi koi, cee lo, darts, videogames and more. You can easily sink in more times in these as in the main story. I like the side-quests and craziness involved. For the characters each one has a special side activity aka arc. Kiryu has taxi missions, Taiga a hunting mini game, Haruka dance battles and Tatsuo of cause a baseball story arc. Those were entertaining and even I who never payed much time a the baseball mini games was amazed how good Tatsuo’s arc worked. A true strength of the game. The presentation and gameplay is like expected in a Yakuza game. You level up, learn abilities and manage equipment and items. The battle system works smoothly for the most times. If you like previous games you will feel familiar (Don't start a part 5 of a series). My negatives were like already said that the story is a bit overburdened and some parts can be removed without mayor impacts. Other than that I see no noteworthy problems. Overall I started at 9/10 but now give a rounded up 8/10 as it got hard to finish the game and I don't talk about the difficulty. Expand

Another solid installment. In some ways, juggling 5 protagonists is a drawback, but it also made for some fun aspects that didn't drag on too much, like playing rhythm games as Haruka. Overall, very enjoyable.

One of the best games I’ve ever played. The storyline, characters, gameplay are amazing!!! The only thing that I didn’t like is the part with Saejima and snow village. But there's no point talking about that here, as only players who already know the series would consider playing this one, and they know all about it.

Comparatively, Yakuza 5 started off with a good setting and interesting characters, but quickly fell down to rehashing every single narrative techniques and plot points from Yakuza 4, with so many predictable reversals and counter-reversals that it becomes dull very quickly. On top of that, our beloved Kiryu gets even less screen time and the game features the most anticlimatic ending in a Yakuza game so far.

Gameplay wise, expect zero improvements, and although the game is marginally less frustrating that Yakuza 4, you'll still wish you can skip straight to the cinematics. Do yourself a favor and play on easy, it might be cheesy, but so is the game. At least the side arc of each character is pretty good and worth getting into. As a matter of fact Haruka's mechanics were particularly fun and varied, and I wish it had been developed even further.

Ultimately, these changes, as well as the visual and mechanical upgrades, make Yakuza 5 Remastered a better game than the original release. If you’re a newcomer to the series and have never experienced the beautiful story of this title, then this is a must-play. The changes made here, especially when considering the other remastered titles, make it clear the Yakuza Remastered Collection is a great choice for any fan of the Kazuma Kiryu saga, or someone looking to continue their journey after Yakuza Kiwami 2.

Yakuza 5 was considered a high-water mark for the series, and it's easy to see why. I've rarely seen a game that packs in so much content, even compared to the other installments of the series which are bursting with side quests and mini games. Though the story loses some of its focus in the final part (a recurring issue with most Yakuza games), it still keeps you engaged from beginning to end. There are laughs, tears, broken faces, and a hell of a lot of dancing. In other words, it's a quintessential Yakuza game that makes for a super-satisfying conclusion to the Yakuza Remastered Collection!
