Being an all time fan of the yakuza series I was deeply dissapointed with this long awaited sequel. The graphics are downright horrible and the gameplay is not only boring but feels nothing like its successor. Do not waste your money on this horrible milking cashgrab

I once read that there are 2 kinds of people, people who have played Yakuza games and love them, and people who have never played them.

Whist being "mature" the story didn't remotely grip me, I had no interest in what was happening, what had happened or what may happen in the future.
The combat, at first seemed fun and varied, but swiftly capitulated into mindless button-mashing and extremely repetitive encounters.
The "Substories" were in the same vein, started off as quirky and funny, but ended up being monotonous, repetitive fetch quests with pointless rewards.
The RPG system was also relatively redundant and boiled down to spending in-game currency on upgrading your moves and health bar - Again, no thought required, no consequences and no point.
I've sat on this game for some time, given it more than its fair share of chances, but its just not something I'm into. The style of it, the look, the controls, there is something "off" with all of it and for a game as long as this it needs to hook you and hook you good.
There is so much filler in this game to pad the run-time, who wants to play retro Sega games? Sending a guy to find tools for upgrades, karioke etc etc - I just doesn't interest me.
I wanted a brawler with solid varied combat, if you want that, play Sleeping Dogs.
Every minute I spent playing it, I wished I was playing something else.
I genuinely fell asleep during one of the cutscenes at the end of Chapter 2 or beginning of Chapter 3 and that has NEVER happened to me before.
I can see some people love these games and I'm comfortable I'm not one of them.
For those of you who enjoy it, it's shonky camera, one dimensional combat, abundance of cut-scenes and juvenile Metal-Gear-esque potty humor good for you, I'll be over here playing something else.

Nonetheless, you can still beat the game even at hard difficulty just using block and the main combo you learn at the start as many of the moves you learn throughout the game feel rather unnecessary. On the upside, there are at least 5 different mini games that can all put a smile at your face. The main drawback is perhaps the fact that you have to listen through so much dialogue which is told in Japanese and you will find yourself clicking the skip button quite a lot. Graphics on the PS4 are rather pathetic, so I would say go for the PC version if you have the option. Still, my PS4 Pro did not emit too much excessive noise while rendering the game, which is usually the case with the newer games. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I made a Metacritic account just to write about how f**king amazing Yakuza 0 is, I'm almost 100% sure that it's my new favorite game of all time. I have completed about 20% of the game and I'm over 35 hours into it, there's so much to do. Here's just a few of the things you need to do to 100% the game's completion log:
    - Eat everything at every restaurant in Sotenbori and Kamurocho
    - Spend, get and invest over 1,000,000,000 yen
    - Complete the 100 substories, there are 40 for Majima and 60 for Kiryu
    - Collect every telephone card on the map to befriend Mr Libido
    - Go to a telephone club and befriend three girls
    - Travel 100 km by foot (trust me, it takes way longer than you think, after over 35 hours of almost only walking around doing side stuff, I have yet to pass 50 km)
    - Defeat 200 enemies in the 6 different fighting styles (3 for Kiryu, 3 for Majima)
And all of that isn't even close to everything. Some examples of especially great subquest from where I am at is:
    - Producing a tv show without knowing anything about producing
    - Helping a dominatrix get better at her job
    - Speaking through a portable phone (again, trust me, it's harder than you'd think)
    - Defeat a huge guy who, if you don't defeat him which is very likely you don't, will steal all the money you currently have on you
    - Helping a hardcore band be actually hardcore (this one's probably my favorite of all of them so far)
    - Going full real estate, buying buildings, collecting money, hiring staff, all while trying to get a hold of
    Kamurocho from The Five Billiionaires
    - Helping a kid get an adult mag while other people are watching
And just to top it off, the best features of the game:
    - A fantastic story with fantastic pacing
    - Fantastically written characters
    - Tons of side content to do after you're done with the story, though I highly suggest people do them as they play the story
    - Amazing simple to learn, hard to master combat
    - Memorable layouts of the open worlds
    - Some of the best villains in any game period
    - Fantastic controls
    - Fantastic soundtrack (especially Judgement) and sound design, and finally...
    - THE ABILITY TO PAUSE A CUTSCENE WITHOUT SKIPPING IT!
10/10. That's what the game gets, and it gets what it deserves. The only games that even come close to rivaling it for me is Persona 5, Psychonauts and Dark Souls, but even they struggle. It is just a pure gaming masterpiece, and a PERFECT introduction to any series. I can't wait to move on to the other games after I finish it, but I will take it slow and try to do as much as possible in this game before going over to Kiwami.

Equal parts soap opera drama and absurd craziness, Yakuza 0 is a terrific entry point into the long running and very popular Japanese underworld drama. As a starting point for the two main lead characters of the series, Kazama Kiryu and Goro Majima, it shows what lead up to the first game and the causes for how they became the people they were at the very beginning of the main story. As a newcomer to the series, it was nice to see the characters in almost their base form and see what drove them towards the events that will happen in the first game.
For those that don't know and might be interested in this series, the Yakuza series is filled to the brim with everything that's over-the-top. Whether it's the story, the combat, or the crazy weird side quests, this game throws everything and the kitchen sink at you. Starting with the story, as stated before, this is a great starting point for the series and for people to get into it. It hits on alot of stuff that seems like it will carry over to the following games. While the entire game is in Japanese, you can tell that the actors they got for this are top notch. Especially those who played the main two leads, Kiryu and Majima. And while the story goes deep into soap opera territory, especially and most notably towards the end, it's still a very good story. Set along side a wonderful soundtrack that beautifully captured the main events perfectly, the overall cinematic feel that basically everything in this game has really sets it apart from other games.
The combat is where things get a little dicey for me. I've heard it compared to old school beat-em-ups like Streets of Rage. I'm personally not a huge fan of the system. You seemingly just point your character towards an enemy and mash buttons till they are dead. There really aren't very many combos and the game relies too heavily on counters as trying to set them up is extremely difficult because the lock on system is not very well done and far too loose when trying to lock onto one enemy in a large group of them. It could use a little more refining going forward.
With so much to do and see in the game, it's hard to pass up on this. I had to take a point away because of the messy combat system and the soap opera-y tone the story took on late. But I'd highly recommend this to anyone who wants to get in on the ground level. Especially with the upcoming release, and proper, remake of the original game due to come out in a month or so.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Yakuza 0 is not just the best game in the franchise, it's one of the best games I've ever played PERIOD.

Starting off with the good. The combat in the game is as good as ever. Yakuza has always been known for its brutal combat and its whacky finishers known as "HEAT actions." All that is still here and then some but with the added twist of "Styles." Kiryu Kazuma and Goro Majima each have 3 different fighting styles to choose from (and an unlockable 4th style for both) and each one style works for different situations. For example, Kiryu's Beast style and Majima's Breaker style are best used against a larger groups of enemies. On the other hand, Kiryu's rush style and Majima's default thug style is better utilized for evading incoming heavy attacks while also dishing out a respectable amount of damage. These styles are a breath of fresh air and they brought something new to an older combat system.

The story and characters are some of the most memorable in the franchise. The new characters such as Makoto, Sagawa, Tachibana, and the three Tojo clan lieutenants are some of the most well-written side characters who really compliment Kiryu and Majima very well. A particular standout is Kuze who's utter badassery is just too much to handle. I never got tired of fighting Kuze. On the other hand, Makoto and Majima's relationship is quite possibly the most compelling in the series. The way these two meet and how their friendship develops is well-paced and believable and it was all bookended by a truly bittersweet ending.

Another I liked about the story is how well they divided the chapters. In Yakuza 4 which had 4 playable characters, you went through each character's story and that by the time each individual arc was done, we were in the finale. This was not good pacing as it made players go back to base stats over and over again; on top of that, each character's arc was so long that by the time you reach the ending, you would have most likely forgotten what the hell Akiyama was doing again. That is a problem that isn't found in Y0 as they do a much better switching between the protagonists. For every 2 chapters you complete, it switches to a different character and that is a much better way of handling as it keeps gameplay (and the characters arc) fresh.

Finally, the content. This game has a **** of content. Over 100 substories that have their own quirky story, plenty of minigames to partake in, friends to make, and also both characters have their own side storyline to accomplish. Kiryu has his real-estate while Majima has his cabaret club. What's so amazing is how Yakuza plays with tone. The story is this overly serious crime melodrama and yet when you get to the side stuff, it's pure comedy and zaniness. I don't know how but Yakuza perfectly balances these wildly different tones.

Now on to some of the bad. The pacing of the story is not the best. To be more specific, there is a lot of talking in this game. Do not get me wrong, I like exposition especially if it's interesting exposition which this game has for sure. The problem is there are times where we're literally talking about the same thing over and over again just worded differently. Yes, I get it the Empty Lot is important. I've heard it from 3 different people at this point. They are just beating you over the head with this information and they aren't giving any new information. Yakuza does this in other games too especially in Yakuza 5 and the Judgment spin-off where new information is mentioned and we have to hear about this in 3-5 different conversations. Yakuza 0 can definitely get long-winded at times.

Another quick negative is in presentation. Yakuza 0 looks like a PS3 game that was ported into PS4. Some of the background and textures can get ugly and as for walking NPC's, you start to see the same face in different clothing really quickly in this game. Similar to how a lot of Skyrim characters had the exact same voice. Also, there are 4 different presentation of scenes. Fully voice-acted cutscenes, fully voice-acted in-game scenes, non voice-acted in-game scenes, and the fully-voice acted still images. This was an absolute head scratcher especially for those still images. Yakuza 7 solved this issue by having those scenes only in flashbacks but in Y0, they had them in current time scenes as well which was just not good.

Last negative for me is the character switching method. I just hated how you had to go to the real-estate office of cabaret club to switch. It slowed things down. It would have been better to switch from the pause menu or if you can't do that, have us switch characters through the phone booth. It was just unnecessary padding.

Overall, I love Yakuza 0. Yakuza as a whole has always been a niche series that appealed to a certain fan base but I would say that Yakuza 0 is one of the most accessible games in the franchise thanks to its brilliant and brutal combat, compelling characters, and wealth of content.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a game, from the incredible story to the engaging combat, side stories and mini games, Yakuza 0 is a masterpiece.

The story is the highlight of the game, the characters are really well developed. The voice acting is fantastic, even though I do not speak Japanese, I could really feel the emotion of the characters. The cast of voice actors fits extremely well with the character design, especially Kuze, damn his voice fit that character like a glove. It works so well because they seemed to have modeled the characters after their voice actor. The story is a prequel to the other Yakuza games, which I have not played yet. You follow parallel stories of two characters, Majima Goro and Kazuma Kiryu, which inevitably end up intertwining as you approach the end. Both of these characters have strong backgrounds and their stories are so well constructed it's like watching a very good movie but in a very good video game. The cut scene can be quite long but not once did I mind them, I just wanted more. When the credits rolled I was just sad that the story ended there, but good thing there are 6 other Yakuza games ahead of me.

The combat gameplay is phenomenal, Majima and Kiryu are just unbeatable in combat. They can literally take on armies of men, which is hilarious and over the top fun. The special combat moves are crazy fun and brutal, like I don't know how these people can get up after you smash a heavy motorcycle on them!

There's a ton of mini games, like darts, billiard, baseball, old Sega arcade, a very intricate RC car competition network and so much more. You could spend hours and hours just playing through these.

You also have the option of watching video of real Japanese women in bikinis, that was definitely strange to see in a video game to say the least.

There's a huge side quest where you start your own real estate business. You buy properties, invest in them, manage them, and can farm a whole lot of cash really fast that way. Make sure you do some side quest first to recruit good investor, managers or security guards.

I could go on and on about this game. I highly recommend it. I can’t wait to play the next one.

Yakuza 0 is a lot of Yakuza, showing a great deal of excess, brilliance and occasional frustration in equal fashion. There's lots and lots to do, a great story to breathe in, and wonderful characters who play well off each other. At the same time, 0 lacks some of the innovations and gameplay conceits that came with later titles, and it's also just as frustrating in places as some of the franchise's more egregious offenders.

Yakuza Zero is a fantastic game. Spectacular main story combined with great diversity of sub-stories and solid gameplay create a rather unique game.

A fantastically bonkers open-world gem that finally opens up the magic of the series to everyone. [March 2017, p.64]
