Much like The Great War itself, Verdun is rough, grim and wholly unforgiving. A perpetual lesson in patience and poise which decisively punishes fools but rewards frugal armchair tacticians, Verdun makes the player work in every way that a good shooter should. Emboldened by an impassioned take on one of history’s more overlooked conflicts, Verdun’s rough appearance is not enough to detract from one of the finest shooters on PS4.

While it’s far from the most attractive FPS I’ve played this year, Verdun gets its setting and tone incredibly right. There’s a moment in every match where I found myself peering out from behind cover, looking down my rifle, desperate to catch sign of any movement in a field of debris — a moment where the game completely justifies its setting and mechanics. Verdun is rough at times and only half of its modes are any good, but those special moments it offers are rare enough to deserve attention.

The game has a very different pacing to modern shooters and that’s not a bad thing.

It’s a refreshing change from the rest of the first-person shooters and goes to great lengths to ground itself in reality.

Verdun is authentic, you are crawling in the trenches, waiting for the enemy to take a risk. Original? Yes, but it is not something that everyone will enjoy.

A brave attempt at creating a more thoughtful shooter hindered by poor execution and messy technique.

While Verdun is a relatively intriguing experience on a computer, the same cannot be said of the newly released console version of the game. It is a downgrade in every was possible, be it visuals, audio, gameplay, or even the amount of players present. Verdun is an example of the worst console ports have to offer.

The balancing of the maps made all the maps playable and the other updates and patches has improved the entire game a lot. The game is really hard at times but a really good thing about the game is that you can't fake your way through it. You'll get shoot to bits if you aren't clever about your runs and is a good shoot. The different gamemodes mean that you can learn the game properly and when to teams of 30+ players that know how the game works and work together there is no game in history that depicts the real struggle the battle in the trenches on the western front in WWI was. If you wanna learn a realistic first person shooter with real teamwork, strategy and great sound check out Verdun or Tannenberg. If you pick it up for a quick fix and expect to walk over people every game, be prepared to get owned every single game by guys like me who relish in a historical tug of war, where every single shot to the hip or shoulder is lethal every time. Because in Flanders Fields every wound was a death sentence. Expand

As great as Verdun is, it does have its short comings.

For starters the hit detection is a hit/miss, weapons back then was inaccurate compared to today but when I'm about 6'foot away from and enemy with a Lmg and its taking me 5 shots before it registers, it gets a little annoying, to this day i still haven't figured out whether i should shoot just above the reticule or just below and trying to melee enemies is very clunky. I wish you could go in a tank as a special power sort of thing or in the artillery or airplanes. The graphics aswell are a bit outdated but i think it sets the atmosphere and lastly what this games needs is a campaign because when your fighting people online your getting sniped ALOT (kind of like sticking your index finger above the trench) and in squads fighting the a.i, the a.i are dumb and can be terrible shots up close and at long ranges i've been sniped in the head while I'm in cover.

Overall though it's an experience worth playing and again every once in awhile, you just have to bear in mind that this is an indie game and at £6.49p it was worth every penny, i would go as far to say its worth the full £15.99p asking price. I hope if the developers are reading this (i got your message in the loading screen ;-) ) that you could make a sequel with a bit more polish and new mechanics such as tanks, artillery, planes and a campaign. They have done a great job at capturing world war 1 and wish there was more companies to try something new and different in this day of "been there done that" games

Accurate to the time periods, countries, uniforms, tactics, etc. The gameplay is much more fun if you play in a team with friends in voice chat. The moving up trenches and no man land is a very different experience than to rapid and wildness of BF1 or COD. It's also very rewarding when you capture a trench or wipe a squad as the difficulty of the game is brutal. One hit kill weapons are pretty much every weapon in the game, barbed wire which kills you by a sniper or its own doing, the need for great positioning especially when in no man's land, and high reaction time are all characteristics of the gameplay. This can make the game really rewarding or really frustrating depending on the day your having.
The new "Verdun Remastered", which in reality is just a massive update, adds a lot of great features to the game, like a blue or green dot above your teammates head so you don't shoot them by mistake, bots that are easy kills and fill up a game, and new squads. Also with the new inclusion of cross-play with xbone makes the game even fuller.
My only complaints are the lack of understanding of some of the gameplay properties. This includes Capturing trenches and team ranks.
The game doesn't tell you well when you're capturing a tench so sometimes it can be confusing as to what you need to do to progress. Also, your team rank changes often for no reason. It wouldn't be a problem if these ranks didn't effect the attacks you can use. However they do, so it would be nice for a future update to simplify the complex system they have for leveling up your team.

However, this game is a complete let down. Movement is stiff and slow. When you get shot or shoot someone else it barely registers and you either go down or take a wound soundlessly. Environments and maps are something out of a (bad) 1998 game, and the sound design is terrible. The UI is also useless. Avoid this unless they give it out for free! Expand
