This game is just like wwe. Most of it sucks, but when it's good, it's freaking great. But it sucks that between those great moments you have to sit through minutes of loading screens, bugs and missing voice over

Let's just jump into this. The game is beautiful, best looking WWE game that has been released, and by a wide margin. It's fun to play, when it works (more on that later) and makes some improvements from last year's game. The game is beautiful, best looking WWE game that has been released, and by a wide margin. It's fun to play, when it works (more on that later) and makes some improvements from last year's game. The promo engine is a little easier to navigate and get the responses you're looking for and less like a guessing game, but there is more work to be done. CAW and CAS options are as robust as they ever have been with some great additions, like having opening sequences for your own created shows. The matches are fun, although I have only played offline. The modes I have played are MyPlayer and Universe. Here's where the problems start.

Universe for PS4 mode is going to be a lot of fun once it gets fixed, but for now it's almost unplayable. I attempted to cut a promo for my CAW on my created show and the game crashed. Tried again, same result. Okay, staying away from promos, I ran in on a match and jump-started a feud. 3rd week into the feud, starting the 3rd match in the feud, the game crashes. My universe mode is now at a standstill. On to MyPlayer. This mode is a harbinger of crash grabs to come. Last year's career mode made you take some time in investing in your wrestler to improve him and it took some time. I'm okay with that. This year, your wrestler is improved at a snail's pace. Every 4-5 weeks, you gain 1 or 2 points to improve attributes if you have enough in-game currency. You start with a very limited move set based on the wrestling style you initially pick, which is fine, but then you gain access to moves, as well as outfits, taunts, etc., at random via "loot crates", so customization is limited and mostly determined by luck. Once you gain access to those things, you must then unlock them using the same pool of in-game currency you use for attributes. The story line is okay, focusing on whether you side with management or forge your own path against the grain rather than "good vs evil" in an attempt to add some backstage realism to your career. All well and good, but ignoring the good/evil dynamic can be problematic. What is even more problematic is the fact that your wrestler quickly gets outpaced by your competition because improving your wrestler is unreasonably slow. Finally, the Money In The Bank match, with certain objectives to meet, is bugged and you cannot get passed it until you succeed in your objectives, so I'm at in impasse in two modes now. I'm done playing this brand new game until the bugs get fixed,

One last thing about MyPlayer mode. I said before it's a harbinger of cash grabbing. You improve your CAW at a snail's pace with in-game currency that is used for everything and stingily gained, and your improvements are doled out by purchases of loot crates. Next year, maybe even sooner, you will be offered in-game currency at an additional cost to the purchase of the game, mark my words. I gave this game a 5 rating because I think it will be fun to play, for the most part, once the bugs are fixed, but the foreboding of cash grabbing has killed MyPlayer for me. My advice is to buy the game later once the bugs are fixed and Universe mode becomes stable, or, and this is really where I'm leaning, don't buy the game at all. If WWE 2K goes the way of UFC by EA and Madden, then this will be the last WWE 2K game I purchase.

Local multiplayer is still fun though and the graphics are the best yet. If you have someone to play with you'll have a pretty fun time. Don't get suckered into the newer career mode, it's pretty linear and you'll end up against wrestlers who are way out of your player's skill level.

Road to Glory is a nice new feature but it's plagued with long search times and lag, but when it actually works it's great.

Game modes: Universal mode has been ignored almost completely it's very lazy of 2k to ignore it. Career mode has improved slightly you're not fighting Barron Blade all the time but it becomes boring after 30 minutes and the promos are awful despite there being more dialogue options. The Creation suite is probably one of the main reasons to buy the game it has an overwhelming content you can create any superstar/diva you want accurately and attires.

overall, if you're wrestling fan and a fan of 2k wrestling games it's probably worth picking up but for those who loved the THQ wrestling games while this game is better than last years entry, it still has a lot of problems and is still in need of a massive upgrade.

Firstly let's get the positives out of the way, it looks it bit nicer, and they added 8 man matches. They didn't bother to actually add survivor series matches, but with the match editor, 2k will at let you make the matches they were too lazy to add.

Now onto the negatives, it's pretty much the same negatives as the last few years but with pout the poisitives: Awful commentary, Glitches galore, tedious my career mode, pretty much just a sandbox game (imagine FIFA if no one played online and you only had the exhibition option), and then to top it all off, the sandbox, the games only real selling point that the community can share CAWs as to make dream matches or just recreate some nostalgia, is constantly locked behind a paywall of dlc. All the characters that any older fan who doesn't have time to spend endless ours unlocking through the most tedious means possible is expected to pay extra amounts to unlock these wrestlers from the get go.

Loyal fans of the series will continue to buy it, and continue to say it's the best game ever in order to trick others into buying it so they have the slightest hope at playing a game online, but deep down the guys giving in 10s know that this is dire.

Hopefully one day a decent company will be in charge of WWE games, but until then we'all just get more of this rubbish from the joke of a company that is 2k.

The loot crate system put into place, for unlocking gear and moves for your player to use is predatory, in terms of the grind it demands of you. (This only applies to MyCareer. Everything is unlocked for Create-A-Wrestler for use in other modes.)

Universe Mode is largely unchanged from the past few years, but old glitches return, and new ones pop up, including many that cause the game to crash entirely.

The in-ring action has improved, so much so that I'm willing to not rate the game a zero. Commentary is a nice plus, having improved considerably with the removal of Jerry Lawler and his incessant skwaking. Still, repetitive lines do occur.

Graphically, we get a nice boost for most wrestlers, and with a large roster to play around with, there's definitely a lot of choice. Creation has also gotten some nice options as well, which is a breath of fresh air.

In a few months, hopefully some patches will make this game a worthwhile purchase, but at anything more than $30, this game is a ripoff.

Some things can be unlocked with VC but those instances rare. MYCAREER seems much better than last year but I will keep this review spoiler free. Just know it doesn’t seem to be the boring grind fighting Barron Blade 20 times in a row. Universe mode seem to be a major upgrade as well. Being able to scroll rosters and add any wrestler to any show is a plus. The gameplay is largely the same which isn’t bad but should be revamped at some point. That is a huge waist of time, even more so you will cut so many promos that this is what the game becomes about, cutting promos. Yes you get a match here and there, but for every 3 or 4 promos i get one match and no ability points. The ability to grow your character is very limited and boring, I regret wasting my money on this. But I thought buying the digital copy would be worth it, I was completely wrong. I am going back and buying 2k16 or 2k17, rent the game from a game rental place before investing all your money. This game is bad, they need to start over and use some of the great things about previous games that worked and get rid of this version of the game. MyCareer:
I don't see how a WWE game that came out in 2003 can have voice acting, but this game still uses text? That bugged me substantially. Some of the story inside the mode was decent, but it just felt flat with the text. Not even that, the text never reflected well on the superstars. Having Braun Strowman talk to me backstage about food, or having a completely unrealistic promo. The backstage free roam part was useless, but did have more potential to be better. My biggest hate of the game comes from the loot crates. 98% or so of the gear and moves are locked behind loot crates that cost VC to gain. VC is slowly destroying 2K games. When I am creating a character, I want to experiment with different move sets, gear etc. With loot crates, you struggle to do this and unlocking specific gear or a specific move you want is a complete gamble. Even more so when you need to upgrade your stats and too focused on loot crates, it can become an extremely frustrating experience. Loot crates need to be stopped in games. After the first year, it becomes more free roam, however the bugs ruined everything for me. I couldn't continue. I won the MITB contract and cashed in against Orton, won the title, but afterwards I won the Tag Team title by myself. No patch still from 2K which shows how much they care about this game. Road To Glory is a terrible idea as well. Good luck finding a match in there.

    Universe:
If they just took this out, and added Manager Mode back in it would be better. I like the idea of experimenting and setting up rivalries I would want to see in real life. The loading times are just far too much for me, and I couldn't enjoy much of it because of that.

    Gameplay:
A lot of bugs that still haven't been ironed out. I was in a 6-man tag match, I irish whipped Curtis Axel and he just floated into the crowd and never came back. It was crazy. The gameplay is the exact same as 2K17, just with the carry system which is better. And the inclusion of 8-men, which should've been in years ago anyway.

    Overall:
They need an overhaul. Take a year or two out. The game is very quickly becoming stale. I know WWE expect a release every year, and 2K is still finding their foot after THQ had it for so many years. But seriously, this game needs a major overhaul. Take out the loot crates, they dampen the experience. Graphically it's good, and can play well at times. But the modes themselves need a vast improvement for this day and age.

Do not buy. If you're a die hard WWE fan like me, wait for a deep deep sale to buy this. Or wait for the patches to be made (if they can ever be bothered too).

    *Extended review*

    MY PLAYER:

This year 2K18 focused more on the idea of the online game-play & multiplayer story meshing together where you can play as your created superstar both against the A.I & against other players. They also added loot crates, as this year 2K18 locks a lot of features to customize your character such as hair styles, clothing & wrestling gear. This isn't a bad thing as of yet, But given the history of how loot crates work, I hope & pray that by 2K19 there is not an option to spend real money for these things. Overall the my career story plays out alot differently from last years. Last year you had to endlessly grind your way from #10 - #1 to earn a title shot. This year you feel like you have more freedom, with choices of cutting promos, assisting other superstars in their tasks & having more control over your character with the new feature of walking around backstage before and after each show. This feature can get a bit repetitive, but it is still a great foundation to start with for next years entry.

    Online:

Don't get me wrong, i tried my hardest to enjoy the online experience but it still isn't quiet at the point where i would play it over Universe mode/Singleplayer or even couch co-op. From poor connections and still long wait times, there is still a lot of room for improvement with the servers on this game. It did concern me that nobody from 2K really mentioned a whole lot about their server issues being addressed and after playing online it is clear to see why. The concept of the online is great, but it lacks in execution when it comes to actually getting into a match and not have something go wrong because of the server issues.

    Universe Mode/Exhibition/Creation Suite:

This is for me the greatest part of the game, this is what has kept me coming back the last few years and why the replay value for this game is so high. having the freedom to create your own storylines, manage each superstar, create your own PPV or your own Title. The possibilities seem almost endless. With the support of up to 8 superstars on the screen battling it out now, it may be a bit messy at times but the amount of chaos being caused in one ring is so satisfying to be a part of. Just watching a 8 man battle royal with pins and submissions on, health set to low, 3 finishers for everyone & seeing who the best man/woman is for me is just such a cool & sometimes hilarious thing to watch.

    Minor Concerns:

Whilst i really enjoy this game for the amount of different scenarios & storytelling you can make there still are a few nagging issues that still need to be addressed.

The first minor concern i have is about the performance, Playing this on a regular PS4 seems to struggle to maintain 30FPS when i do multi man matches, such as 6-8 battle royals/ Elimination chamber matches. It does concern me because it takes away a lot of enjoyment in what should be some of the most chaotic matches in the game, but they're being bought down because myself personally can see that the game isn't performing at a constant smooth framerate.

Another minor concern i have is to do with the previously mentioned loot crates. I'm seeing more and more games add this. Shadow of War recently came out and has this, it makes people pay for a single-player game for random items. The same concept applies with this game, please 2K, DO NOT MAKE US PAY MONEY for things like hairstyles & clothing. The WWE games prioritize their customization and if we have this locked out in future games and we have to grind CP or pay real money I & everyone else that supports the WWE games will not be happy at all. Im fine with just using CP to unlock the crates as there is no real money involved, this is just a heads up for you guys in case you were planning on going down that route.

Overall, the game is great. Minus my two small concerns with this game, the pros heavily outweigh the cons. The game is a step in the right direction & i enjoy the improved mechanics. If a game like this can keep my glued to my seat because i want to play one more match, then in my opinion it has succeeded in being an enjoyable experience. And that's exactly what this game is. If you haven't got this game or were concerned, don't hesitate anymore. It is a good game and wrestling fans will enjoy, and even non fans will enjoy too.

After all of the rage last year, they have yet again dropped the ball, didn't even bother to update it or fix issues that were complained about last year by MANY. WWE 2K18 is a game which I have only imagined to be playable in my dreams. Thankfully, for the first ever 2K Games & Yukes has fulfilled every single WWE fan's dream with WWE 2K18. It's a WWE game that 2K should have built from the start of this new generation of consoles, because PS4 & Xbox One has enough power for these kind of experiences in a professional wrestling video game. WWE 2K18 stays true to the WWE formula. Infact, 2K wasn't lying at all. WWE 2K18 is really the most realistic WWE video-game I've ever played. It features a brand new graphics engine, thousands of new animations, and for the first time in years, really really good commentary. All of this makes WWE 2K18 as close to the real WWE broadcast as possible. The gameplay is ultra realistic, the entrances are realistic, the superstars & divas, the lighting, the arenas, the crowd, all of these are presented with massive attention to detail. Everything that is possible in WWE TV broadcast today is possible in this game. myCAREER is back with a bang and this time myCAREER is really worth playing due to the added ability of free-roaming in backstage which was also featured in SmackDown vs Raw 2011. myPLAYER is also a brand new mode which consists of both myCAREER and ROAD TO GLORY. Road to Glory mode is the best addition to any WWE game till date. The creation suite is truly epic. While making a superstar, players are given the ability to choose from 8 different fighting styles. All of the features that were absent from the previous iterations returns in WWE 2K18. The gameplay is the best in the series to date and it's very very realistic. Every superstar has got his/her own animations to make them react like themselves, like they do on WWE events. Overall, to sum up my review, WWE 2K18 is a complete WWE product, fully loaded and ready to run. I want to thank 2K Games & Yukes from the bottom of my heart for making a game like WWE 2K18. BE LIKE NO ONE.. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While this game is no doubt better than 2k17 unfortunately mycareer is broken. I've attempted to complete MITB about 6 or 7 times now and cannot progress past that point. In addition, mycareer features a myriad of other annoying bugs from backstage wrestlers spasming to randomly pairing you with another wrestler as a tag team (cancelling out the tag team you're currently in), plus the people you talk to backstage are constantly saying the wrong names (for example when I ran out and attacked Sami Zayn before his match somebody backstage asked me why I attacked Mojo Rawley). Universe mode also is experiencing issues as you cannot cut a promo that you schedule into the show among other things. Those are the only 2 modes I have played so far so I'm sure their are bugs in the other modes I just have not noticed. Overall, I feel like this game could have been really good (and still can be) if they had waited another month or two and fixed all the bugs and then released it. Here's to hoping 2k releases a patch soon. Expand

With a complete overhaul in the graphics department, the game brings character models to life more so than most games have this generation. The game-play has not changed much but the player is exposed to fantastic story telling in the way the character portray the pain and exhaustion they're experiencing throughout a match. The creation suite has expanded itself to bring more depth to your character looks, arenas, move-sets has more detail than ever before and you will spend hours just messing around with the many possibilities it provides. The create a match feature is back, however it seems extremely basic compared to what others might have hoped for. Not being able to create a falls count anywhere Hell in a Cell match is a example of the potential the game failed to deliver in this regard. Universe Mode is still needing of work to be done. The addition of the power ranking system is great, but it fails to be something special due to how messy it can be. Over 200+ superstars are on the rankings ever if they aren't featured on a show. The promo system has a lack of innovation as it returns with nothing new except for dialogue. It's potential has yet to even be toyed with it seems this year. The Road to Glory/ My Career mode is interesting at best, however with the limited options for character customization at the beginning of the mode, it won't be as fun until later on in the story when you finally have what you want for your character. The problem with this is simply, it's all in loot boxes. Overall WWE 2k18 is easily the best 2k has done with the series and is a great sign of things to come in 2k19. Expand

While it is not the perfect wrestling game, as the menus look horrible, and the graphics are not the STEP up that I was expecting, they are still somewhat realistic. I will come back and rewrite this with an update once I actually test a match with my CAW vs an actual WWE superstar. Now, without giving things away, I will give a short review of my likes and dislikes.

First, my career mode/my player will no longer allow us to create a SS outside of the mode and import it, and I don't see any option to export yet either. But, once past the tutorial, you get a bit more freedom. NOW, DO NOT WASTE your VC that you get for free. Use that for reversals and power if you plan on doing Road to Glory. Then, use VC to skip over online parts if you are not an online grinder. Secondly, your story begins as if you've already been a star around the world, so expect that.
Reversals are harder this year too. Universe mode is a lot more broad too. More options to write your own story, without having to actually write one. It would've been nice to have create a story in there, or have random stories where promos and matches tied together.
And finally, I do love the 8 bit mode. You can set a show and have it set to 8 bit for old school nostalgia. So we could finally get that dream wrestling game we wanted back in the day with 8 bit graphics. They could add 8 bit style music in the future for each star too, or even bring Wrestlefest style graphics into the game. THAT WOULD BE AWESOME.
So far, from my playing the game, commentary isn't that bad either.
I can see only having the online as a drawback for me, and some freezing issues, as well as glitches, but that's why you make a through test of the game before releasing!
Anyhow, now it's time to beat up Roman Reigns!
Oh and one more thing, this does somewhat remind me of the old Road to Wrestlemanias back stage areas and such. I'll probably join forces with SaniTy and bring WWE to its Knees!

For someone that is new to the WWE game for the PS4. This would be a 5/10. And that's being quite generous. For old timer, it's 4/10. Nothing new. Just rehash the old game with new roster, change career mode and release it again. With nothing fixed.

    - Legends Face Model. (God, Lita's face is so wrong... even Kurt Angle... at least do some modification after doing the face scan to ensure accuracy at its time)
    - Bugs, Bugs.. and new bugs. (For every bug they fix from previous game, they introduce a new one)
    - Awful Loading Time (Unless you have PS4 Pro... I cannot even remember how long I waited for some of these mode)
    - Attributes Ratings : Putting Roman at 95... just so we have to buy the Attribute editor, Why not be like your brother NBA 2K, where they actually hire someone to do realistic ratings!

The controls are ridiculous and the reversal system needs to be redone from scratch. Zero improvement from years past.

I'm 42. When I was a kid I loved wrestling. I'm not a big fan of the WWE or wrestling games anymore.
That said this gave had potential to interest me. With a free rental from RedBox, I created a character and wanted to get to bashing heads. Then I waited through over an hour of unhelpful "tutorials" that barely taught me anything and backstage wandering... I had to look up aYouTube video

There at so many cool modes and wrestlers (mostly locked wrestlers). But someone really screwed up when they packaged it all.

I am sorry but the game is completely 100% unplayable. It's not just one or two small glitches, entire matches - the Royal Rumble, elimination matches, so many things are unplayable because the matches never finish. It's really beyond unacceptable. Did anyone even test this game? Unbelievable really. Expand

Great looking and robust to handle, 2K18 authentically replicates the full WWE experience - right down to the occasional, entirely senseless, unhappy ending. [Christmas 2017, p.82]

While WWE 2K18 does hit enough right notes for a recommendation, it still leaves something to be desired. As much as I like the style of these newer games, I miss being able to be as nonsensical as the older ones would allow. All in all, it's a toss-up for me.

An often excellent, authentic wrestler, but the squared circle action deserves a better campaign. [Christmas 2017, p.73]
