If you are a wrestling fan of the modern age, I absolutely recommend this game. I am a fan, and I love it.

However if you are fan of the old games, like Here Comes the Pain or No mercy, then you'll probably not enjoy yourself. I get those games are fantastic, but they are 10+ years old, and this is what you have now.

I will say their business policy is not really consumer friendly, all the dlcs, and current loved stars like Shinsuke are held hostage behind a pay-wall, and the state of the game. It's very glitchy, lot of bugs, since launch 4 patches were released, but even though they fix a lot, there are still many bugs left, and unfortunately new bugs are introduced with every patch that they have to fix later.
    So buyers beware.
However if you want some good looking rasslin, wait for this game to be on sale, and I recommend getting the season pass and Goldberg and NXT pack. Goldberg plays really well, and the NXT pack is essential for having a near complete roster of today's WWE.

I give this game 8 outta 10 for effort, because I'm a dirty mark and sick guy. But if you are none of those things, then my score for you is a 6 outta 10, because this isn't the game for you, it's really for the hardcore fans.
If you are a hardcore fan then the score doesn't really matter because you'll drooling over the Spiral tap of AJ Styles, the taunts of Shinsuke Nakamura, and the upcoming future stars and wrestling mark favourites, the Perfect 10, Austin Aries and the Bullet Club.

In that regard, I probably shouldn't have been so disappointed about what I actually played. This isn't to say that WWE2K17 is the worst game but I have a feeling that it's at the point where it really doesn't know what kind of game it wants to be. What do I mean by this? Does it want to be an engaging game or does it want to be a pick up game?

The pick up aspect is there and plain for everyone to see. Its essentially the first thing you'll see once you hit the main menu screen. A bunch of match options and then you're off - playing whatever you fancy with whomever. Don't like Enzo and want to give him a bit of a beating with the Beast Incarnate? Go for it. For short spanned interactions, however they may vary, this game is probably fine for. The characters all look decent, the entrances are authentic and you've got the mix of signature moves and big finishers as you jobber squash your way through time.

As a fan of the product, my primary interest is career mode. It's the game mode where I spent the vast majority of my time playing and its also where virtually all of my disappointment emanates.

Career mode, from what I experienced, is quite frankly the most boring attempt at a career mode that I have ever experienced in a pro wrestling game. It is boring and it plays out ridiculously badly to the point where I actually wish I never paid money for this title. Now, it wouldn't be fair to have an opinion like this unless I could point to specific examples. So, without any further ado...

The Authority! They will give you tasks that you can choose to complete or ignore. Completing them will earn you VC (doing them consecutively applies a small multiplier) and favour which can sometimes aid you with your matches. For example, I did a promo where the Authority came out and changed one of my matches to a handicap match in my favour. I recently hit maximum appeal with the Authority so I should be their golden boy, right? No, nothing. Just kind of flat. Beyond that, some of the tasks are downright ridiculous and unless you have specific things (that a google search turned up), you just won't complete them. Winning by DQ is just a horrific pain.

The Promos! During the shows when you're not in a 'Rivalry', you'll be able to pick a slot where you can do the almighty promo and work that stick. You can self-promote, attempt to call out a superstar, form a tag team or turn. Before long and by before long I mean the next time you choose 'self promote', you'll see exactly the same options that you saw before. This is scathing but the dialogue choices are worse than what you'd find in Mass Effect - rarely matching what you think they would for the alignment that you choose to be. Attempting to call out a superstar can sometimes, if your relationship is bad enough, lead to a 'Rivalry' - an concept that seemed interesting but just wasn't really that well done which leads to...

Rivalries! Boom, the name given to 'feuds' between yourself and specific superstars of the WWE. The goal is to score more points than your opponent during the course of the 'rivalry'. How do you score or lose points? Its all a bit confusing and often gets messy when you find yourself locked in matches with your rival. For those matches, you'll also often get the opportunity to perform a 'Run in' on their entrance. Perform the run-in and you'll score points. Decline to do so and you'll not only SKIP your match but lose points. During a rivalry with John Cena, the Authority wanted me to get a 4* match. I didn't 'Run In' because I wanted the VC bonus - match was skipped and I lost rivalry points. Still completed the Authority task though! In another bout where I had to win with Green body health, my rival, Cena was at ringside and during the bout a scene triggered where I was attacked and left with orange condition.

When you enter a rivalry, you are not able to do any promos outside of the odd call-out that your rival will do. The 'call out' is just a game of pick the least crap option and hope you get more meter to take the points.

Match Ratings! Probably the most flawed but understandably flawed aspects of career mode. There isn't much to say beyond - In no way, shape or form, should it be possible for me to squash my way to a 5*(Greatest of All-Time) rating. In no way.

My only other major gripe with Career mode is that you'll often have to play a match on every single show that you're eligible for which just becomes a grind. When it comes to a PPV week, you'll be having at least three matches sometimes four if you get double booked with one title match and one rival match.

For all of their attempt to give the WWE fan a more realistic experience, they unfortunately end up giving me something that is just pretty drab.

Not just your character, they gave none of the other superstars or even the interviewer voices. The character customisation is still limited, and I've also discovered that from the 1.01 patch, all of my matches ran in slow motion.

And don't even bother trying to get a game online, I've not managed to find one in the series in about 9 years.

If you've got friends who are into wrestling games then i imagine it's pretty fun competitively, and the backstage segments are fun, but otherwise I wouldn't waste your time.

Maybe next year they'll give us something to do rather than just keep working on a toybox was infinite loading times

To their credit, they have made an effort to improve the game play. The matches are smoother and the AI is okay. So the question is why is this game unplayable? The most obvious reason is the submission system. It should be easy to escape a headlock when your head is not damaged. Unfortunately, the submission system is virtually impossible. I though I could bypass this issue, but turning off submissions isn't even possible. It is honestly game breaking. I don't want to sit through load screens for a twenty second match where I am submitted by a headlock because the submission system is terrible.

Furthermore, the Universe mode constantly adds matches for no apparent reason. I do not understand how such an oversight can make it into a game. There are some new cut scenes, but there certainly are not enough to justify canceling the showcase mode. Personally, I did not care for the showcase mode. However, if they intended to remove an entire mode, they could have at least made significant improvements to the universe mode. They did include a promo engine which doesn't actually seem to affect anything. There is no consequence for winning or losing promos, so why should a game even bother to play them.

There is also a bug that wipes out data if the game goes into sleep mode on main menu screen. It is absurd that on day one, you are asked to download an 11 gigabyte patch and this issue isn't even addressed.

The truth is that I really want to enjoy this game. It seems like it has a lot of features that are worthwhile. Unfortunately, it seems like it wasn't even tested by the developers. If it was play tested, then they should be ashamed to have released such a horrible mess. Anyone who rated this game anything about a 5 must be completely delusional. I want to really enjoy wrestling games, but it seems like this company is happy releasing a bug ridden piece of garbage because they know they have a loyal fan base. It pains me to say it, but this game makes Madden 17 look like a total masterpiece.

    Hope this helps!

Richtig gutes Wrestlingspiel!

    here Comes the Disappointment
WWE 2k17 is the first wwe game I’ve played in this gaming generation…
As a former wrestling fan, there were 2 things that mattered most to me in wrestling games...
    Creative modes and story modes…
Unfortunately here, both of these things are massively shallow…
The greatest improvement here is that the face sculpting…the greatest tool I’ve seen in a create your own character mode in a game period… it allows so much freedom, and feels more like you’re molding clay rather than just your typical sliders…
The rest however.. The attire options... the move sets… the create entrance modes… all of these things have so little options…
The move sets are so uninspired that every wrestler you create will feel pretty identical… the same with entrances as they went back to the ps2 era with you not being able to add custom music…
Leaving creation… one of the most important things in a wrestling game, ultimately feeling generic…
Though I do appreciate being able to mix and match the music available and time them to my characters entrance…
The story mode offered here is my career mode…
And it’s the laziest feeling single player experience of any wrestling game in memory…
Your character starts out in nxt with thankfully Albert being voice acted… and eventually meeting up with Paul heyman as you climb the ladder to a championship and he’s voice acted as well…
But I’m not joking when I saw WWF smackdown 2 had more voice acted sections than this game does, as beyond the first 10 minutes of the game and that 1 time you meet Paul heyman, you get to read dialog while an npc awkwardly moves their mouth…
this is understandable for a created superstar… but as for interviewers and other superstars you start rivalries with its unacceptable…
This is another case of procedural generation garbage… 2k didn’t want to put in the effort of making cutcenes or hiring someone to write their own story line so they give a mode where you create someone and it’s up to you to cut promos and make your own rivalries.. And occasionally trigger a cut scene once every 5 hours
The promos here are a great idea, but the crowd feels so dead that it’s hard to read the type of crowd in your current city, as you’re told early on each crowd is different and reacts to different things...
It would be nice to be booed by them, or cheered so you can dish out an awesome promo…
But none of this happens leaving you to have to guess your way through an always awkward 2 minute promo calling someone out or promoting yourself…
I of course would call out people ranked higher than me.. yet after defeating these characters over and over, my rank for a title would seemingly only rise randomly and wouldn’t go off of the fact that I kept rising to the occasion against the champion and number one contender…
Leaving the promos to ultimately feel like a waste of time…like they didn’t matter at all…
    And honestly probably don’t
    There’s nothing here…
Write this down 2k… WWE is so great because of its story telling…
How can you leave the best part of this property out of your game?
We want story… not 1000 matches… I had to make stories up in my mind to keep myself pushing through the calendar… a calendar that made me fight at least twice every single week of course to cheaply prolong everything and felt like a drag..
Even when the authority disapproved of my because I wouldn’t follow their orders in a match…
This should trigger me being put on fewer and fewer cards to maybe teach me a lesson…
but that would take too much effort to make your systems actually mean anything.. So never mind…
By the way, you also can’t use you’re my career character in other modes...
so you’re inconvenienced in recreating them again if you want to use them in exhibition mode…
    Gameplay wise though…
    Everything feels great...
Switching to your target is just a click from the analog stick away and it’s the most responsive feeling targeting system in a fighting game, though it isn’t perfect as occasionally my character would still swing at the air... not perfect, but it’s a step in the right direction…
    Reversing feels great...
The action however feels very slow…
I find too often that I’d be attacking my opponent on the ground where in past games the action felt much more fast passed and standing…
wwe 2k17 shines in targeting and hit detection in ways past games didn’t…
As well as its freedom in creation…
But the overall shallowness of this game…
Lack of creation options... lack of variety in character style, and lack of story makes this title highly skippable…
Other than an updated roster, and added in crowd and backstage fighting, this title offers nothing exciting for wwe fans…
    I give wwe 2k17
    a 6.5/10

now the 6 horrible things which can make this game be the Greatest WWE game ever made in the history of WWE games if resolved.

    1. Difficulty:
one of the most challenging things was to beat the Legend difficulty in Smackdown vs. Raw 2006.!
but now, the most ridiculous AI is on the Legend difficulty. and it's goalless actions in this mode can make "My Career Mode", "Universe" and regular matches boring.
In this difficulty even if you increase the A.I Reversal Rate, you can easily select Tyson Kidd and destroy the Undertaker or even pin him.
Imagine that you can feel all the stress when you face the Triple H, or you are doing your best to stand against Brock Lesnar so that you do not lose the match.
even if implementing these are not easy, perhaps adding a new Difficulty can be handy.

    2. Starting Strategy:
there have been 4 options with which you could've start the game. one of them is the No Action mode.
but in this series it's as if the game commences with No Action mode and there are no strategies when you begin the match.

    3. Pinfall Mini Game:
the pins in the game need to change essentially, after some time you can escape all the pins easily.
I myself, have escaped 7 times from Undertaker's Tombstone after one second, and I was playing as Kalisto.
the pin system is ridiculously designed and it is far from natural is very artificial. this can make a regular match not only a boring one, but can make it take 30 minutes to finish.

    4. Stamina System:
refilling the stamina was a smart move in WWE 2k15, but it doesn't work properly. you can simply do nothing and refill your stamina.
It would have been better if you could just hold a button to refill the stamina.

    5. Grapple System:
one of the worst and tiresome parts of the game is the grappling system. In spite of having good animation scenes, no tactics can be found there and there is no joy in it.
and you cannot feel that you performed them professionally. SVR 2006 and 2007 did better in this area.

    6. Reversals:
In my opinion there should be one button for the Strike Reversal and another button for the Grapple Reversal, because even with the Reversal slot it is still easy to escape most grappling moves and impossible to perform some.

I have played all the WWE series from "SVR Here comes the pain" to WWE 2k17. and I think that the most successful one was SVR 2006.
I really don't know why they do not learn anything from it's success.

This was my review about the game, and a big tip to 2k that can make their game more exciting and beautiful by considering 6 aforementioned remarks about the gameplay.

    Thank You.

I'd like to start off by saying that if you are NOT a wrestling fan you most likely will not like this game. The matches can be fun but most of the time they are boring. The A.I is very bad and once you get used to the controls the game will feel as easy as a kids game, even on the hardest difficulty. The roster is definitely a good one for the average WWE fan. There's many superstars from the past and present to choose from. The MyCareer mode is laughably bad and is VERY repetitive to the point where you will sometimes face the same opponent over and over again without any story-lines or cut-scenes happening. Universe Mode is very much the same as the previous installments and the newly implemented promos are horrendous and riddled with countless grammatical errors. In fact most of the promos make little to no since. Here's an example, in some of the promos you will call out another wrestler and when they come out your superstar will insist that they interrupted them. Does that make sense to you? Of course not. The only redeemable part of this game is the creation suite, which is basically the same as WWE 2K16 but has improved a bit. Oh, I forgot one thing, THE BUGS. So many bugs in every single game mode, especially in the matches. Even some bugs that have been in the game for YEARS. In short, WWE 2K17 is basically the same as WWE 2K16 with some minor changes that over all don't really effect your experience. If you're a hardcore wrestling fan you'll get some enjoyment out of this game, but not much unless you're very interested in the creative aspect of wrestling games or you have someone else to play against. Good Game though, but lack new modes and features in order to play, plus i really miss 2k showcase, it rocks me. especially CM Punk vs John cena, Shawn Michaels vs HHH, and even Stone Cold's early Austin 3:16, They are one of my favorites, but kinda think of it, they're already ran out of ideas. but despite of it, just 10/10 of your game.

WWE 2k17 is an enjoyable game that keeps you engaged but it the career mode is the biggest because it constantly crashes.
I had once managed to fight for the NXT and thought i beat the champion and got the belt my ranking stayed the same , at the same time even though i change my T-Shirt my sales start dropping and now are stuck to zero and i am anable to find out why .
    All of this made

All of this made the experience pretty frustrating and since i have considered many times to just ditch the game all together

O undertaker fez o cash-in, ganhou o titulo, só que o match entre Kofi e Alberto del rio acabou dando o titulo para o alberto del rio. Expand

It's a step up from 2k15 but also a step down using in game currency to unlock the wrestlers, belts, and stages is so tedious unlike previous entries you can unlock it all by playing events that happen a year or so. The create your superstar is a little bare bones but not so much so than 2k15 but it works. Honestly some of the wrestlers faces look like they had bad plastic surgery. For example Becky Lynch does NOT look like that at all in reality. Overall if you're into wrestling it's still a good candidate but be aware of it's tedious nature. Expand

While the promos, commentary, and female wrestler treatment could use more fine-tuning, the rest of the game does a wonderful job of delivering an experience that’s just a bit more impressive than last year’s entry. For now, all we can keep hoping for in each new game is increased accuracy, larger rosters, better treatment of female wrestlers, and fresher color commentary.

WWE 2K17 deserves the same verdict as its predecessors: it's better than before, but still far from "perfect" or even just "good".

This year’s WWE left me with mixed feeling. At its core it’s still a decent game and minor changes went in the right direction, but lack of Showcase mode and wasted potential of addressing the crowd held me back from being really excited. [13/2016, p.64]
