    Pointless, slow and boring.
Main problem is the character's walk pace, way too slow considering you have to wander around for ages to unlock progression, and that's by itself another problem : very vague objectives quickly try your patience, you get sick of wandering around trying to find the conditions that will trigger the next script you need to advance through the "story".

You never really know if you're progressing or not, and you spend more time walking around than anything else.
As for the "scares", I might be jaded, but a guy standing in front of you 3 feet away is not scary, whether you can see his face or not.
If you think that's unnerving, avoid going outside, where you'll be confronted with people standing in front of you every 10 feet.
I quit after 4 hours and never was really engaged, the whole experience boiled down to painfully slowly walking around, until something randomly happens. Boring and pointless.

Terrible Inventory mixed with bugs. Enemies pop up because clearly they did not care for any detail besides graphics. I also experienced moments in which i locked myself inside a room because i dropped an empty lighter infront of the door. A sad example of indie games.

Best horror game ever made. I fall asleep watching horror but have struggled to play through Visage because it’s so scary, the controls aren’t perfect but don’t detract from the game. It’s a good story and beautifully executed. I wish there were more games like this. Be warned though - it really could disturb you

The intro immediately sets the tone and is the most disturbing and uncomfortable I’ve ever experienced. SadSquare have taken the best elements of PT and expanded on its ideas, improved its flaws and others in the ‘haunted house’ genre (most notably its open-ended design that leads to more tension and unpredictability), and paved its own path. 1. Great graphics and sound design.
    2. Some of the most awful inventory management I've ever had the misfortune of experiencing in my years as a gamer.
    3. A weird color filter, resulting in bad black levels that don't do my OLED TV justice.
    4. Having to constantly run back and forth to light switches because a supernatural entity keeps turning them off.
    5. Getting killed instantly, forcing you to restart from your last save over and over again, because a ghost materialized out of nowhere right next to you.
    6. Wandering around aimlessly in a giant house looking for the one small clue that will let you progress to the next part of the game, where you'll have to look for the next small clue in that giant house.

If you, for some reason, feel like one or more of the things mentioned above seem nice, consider giving Visage a go. If not, stay away.

Not only is this game filled to the brim with atmosphere, the developers also made varied and interesting gameplay out of the “no-combat” approach to horror, keeping things fresh. There are also many frightening moments that you could easily miss, perfectly executed little scares that are designed for if you happen to be in one exact spot facing one exact way, always keeping you on your toes. The inventory system feels burdensome at first, but once you’ve passed the curve it works perfectly. The puzzles and exploration are designed to be for detail oriented players, as it is not always obvious what to do. While this could be frustrating, as long as you look everywhere (walls, floors and ceilings included) you should find your way. The graphics are 97% brilliant. The one miss is human models are pretty ugly, and can be a bit jarring the first time they show up. But other entities are beautifully horrific, and the design and craftsmanship of the game world is utterly spectacular. Nothing will ever replace losing Silent Hills, and Konami’s absolutely idiotic decision to pull P.T. still stings. But for those who loved P.T. and want a damn terrifying experience, this is a must. This game took many years to make, and now we know why. It is a modern horror masterpiece. Expand

Some of these events are randomized, which on paper sounds amazing but it ends up being more annoying than terrifying: picture yourself turning on a light switch to explore a room and then having it turned off every other time: it's effective the first couple of times, and it grows very old very quickly. Scares are guaranteed, though, as the game makes excellent use of audio and visual effects to put you on edge. The house feels truly invaded by a presence, and furniture and clothing and shadow play make for outstanding nightmare fuel. I'm no stranger to first person horror games myself: played my fair share of titles such as Amnesia, Slender Man, or even System Shock back in the time, and even still Visage gave me a lot of goosebumps and got me hyperventilating many times. So, if you are into these sort of things, you might want to give it a try. Still, be warned that some technical issues bring the whole experience down. First and foremost, inventory management is overly complicated and is also married to a counterintuitive control scheme. Second, be prepared for a lot of wandering around. Objectives are seldom clear, and I found myself lost inside the house for a couple of hours before I gave up and checked a walkthrough, only to find that I had to interact with a single object to progress the plot. A single object, shown during a cutscene, in a massive house. Granted, exploration plays a major role in horror games, but I feel that the game could work better ways to communicate its ideas to the player. It doesn't help that the house shifts, and you have to find that one affected door or room to make progress. And if you missed it, tough luck, keep wandering around. If this sounds like it's right up your alley, then you won't be disappointed. Personally, even though I really wanted to like this game, I grew bored after a few hours. Expand

    A favor:

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Instead, the developers of Visage managed to create an eerie atmosphere that just a few games were able to achieve before (such as: Alien Isolation, SOMA, Amnesia: The Dark Descent). The focus here mostly lies on exploration and storytelling, escaping from monsters therefore is not the main part of the game (although you still will have to do so). What makes this game so special is that you really feel like being part of a (good) horror movie. Even if the game uses a relatively small environment, there are so many ways to explore your surroundings, depending on the story part you´re in. Three (out of four) chapters are really done well; only one chapter is a letdown and plays more like Outlast 2 than anything else. Here, the game feels a little bit rushed. From a technical point of view, the game is really done well. However, one problem is that some character models and their animations can´t hold up to these beautiful environments that you will find in the main house. Moreover, not all areas that you will explore are as detailed as the main house. So the overall visual impression fluctuates between “photorealistic” and “nice”. But this is okay, after all we simply can´t expect a Triple A production here. Besides that, what counts in the end is the overall impression. And regarding gameplay, atmosphere and storytelling these guys do excel most of the Triple A titles out there. If there was “Visage 2” (or simply a story DLC), it would be a must buy for me. Please SUPPORT these devs so that we will get more excellent games like Visage. Expand

I found Visage highly atmospheric, extremely creepy and terrifying. It was great to experience a horror game not riddled with jumpscares but actual riddles and psychological horror. For an indie game, Visage looks stunning, both graphically and aesthetically. Sure, there's a psychiatric ward and other horror clichés, but they still felt quite unique or at least inspired.

The controls and the item menu aren't always very intuitive so I ended up dropping quite a few items on the floor. The item menu isn't very practical. The game can also be really vague regarding its goals, so at times it started to feel more frustrating than scary. There are also bugs and glitches, nothing game-breaking, but they might prevent you from getting some trophies. Nevertheless I'd absolutely recommend Visage.

Controls are pretty bad even by survival horror standards. Cumbersome switching of left and right hand items to perform even simple actions. No ingame pausing. Paranormal activity randomly occurs around you like lights going on, making it too dark to find the switch to turn them back on, or eventually getting to a point where your sanity is threatened and your character dies.

Very buggy. Sometimes key items don't appear unless you reload multiple times. As of this date there's 1 game breaking bug currently on the ps5 involving the console not being to auto-save correctly during the indifference mask-piece quest that eventually crashes the game. This effectively makes the true ending unobtainable on the ps5. I'm not deducting points for this, since it's console-specific, but be aware.

This game is just shy of perfection. The atmosphere is terrifying and un-trustworthy. The narrative is dark and creepy. The antagonists are unique in their own ways, cunning and unpredictable, and behind any and every corner. This is the first horror game in a very long time that had me set down the controller and take a break. The only unfortunate drop-off, for me, was the ending. It came to a section of game where the storytelling was trope-ish and seemed rushed. I grew so bored that i even stopped playing for quite some time and eventually came back to finish it. But man, the first 90% of the game was worth the wait, and makes up for the rather dull ending. I REALLY HOPE this team is already hard at work on something else or even given the keys to an old horror franchise like Silent Hill. That would be on a level of Blue Point remaking games, but in the horror genre! Expand

“Visage is hard…yadda yadda yadda” Would have been nice to let the consumer know that in the trailers and promotional material, SadSquareStudio. Will you waste your time aimlessly wandering around the house trying to figure out what you’re supposed to do next? 100%. Does it have a terrible/clunky inventory system? Also yes. Horror games need to ditch the obtuse puzzles and just focus on the horror… this isn’t the 90’s anymore. Satisfy your horror cravings with Outlast or Madison instead. Expand

I made a metacritic account specifically to express my sheer frustration with this game. Don’t get me wrong, it’s beautiful and detailed. But the inventory system alone has made this game unplayable. I’m happy to dive into a narrative heavy walking sim game and I’m sure Visage crafted an interesting story. It’s a shame I won’t get to see how it plays out. Between getting caught in a deathI made a metacritic account specifically to express my sheer frustration with this game. After being successful on Kickstarter four years ago and later on its Early Access, the first title of Sadsquare Studio really reaches our expectations. Filled with great gameplay ideas, the game always tries to find new ways to send shivers down the spine of the player. We're not so sure about the handling of the inventory but despite that, Visage prooves that it only takes some interesting concepts and a genuine passion for the genre to make great horror games.

Visage has so much going for it as a horror experience that even the most frustrating control issues are easily forgiven. The deep themes of dread and trauma may be too much for more casual gamers who just want a good jolt, but Visage is an absolute must for hardcore horror fans looking for some substance behind their scares.

As a psychological horror that uses one of the most iconic horror games of the last-gen as its inspiration, it works incredibly well. I never thought walking down a hallway in a game could fill me with such dread, but every single staircase, hallway, and door ramped my anxiety all the way up. In all honesty, for the first couple of days, I could only play it for 10 minutes at a time before I had to call it quits. As someone who watches horror movies all the time, getting me to tap out before you even scare is a feat to be proud of. By that measure, Visage should be bursting with pride!
