After seeing the trailer for the game a while ago I figured I would preorder the game as it did look pretty interesting. I have to say thoughAfter seeing the trailer for the game a while ago I figured I would preorder the game as it did look pretty interesting. I have to say though that while for the most part my play through had been an enjoyable experience it hasn't been without it's faults.
The idea and implementation behind this cutesy rpg/school management system sounded really good in theory, in practice though I kinda feel that the game fell short of my initial expectations. The school management side of things sees you picking a building and placing it down on a designated spot from the ones available depending on your school level. (This is levelled up by fame earned from certain buildings and graduating students). Once all buildings have been placed down their is nothing else to do in the management side of things. (Apart from level up and replace if you feel like doing). Each building gives your characters a set of perks to help them on their missions.
The missions in the game are split into 2 different modes, errands are where you send characters out to complete a task automatically (which they normally fail) and general where you wander round a smallish area either picking things up or fighting enemies, sometimes you get to do both.
This is where the game really starts to get old quick as you wander around the similar style levels killing everything and levelling up characters. This is then rinsed and repeated over the course of the game. Sure some battles are harder than others but still there really isn't a challenge apart from the odd level here and there.
The characters you play as all look fun and cutesy starting out at levels 1-10, these increase over time as you play and unlock other characters who can max out at level 25 in the end game. Upon reaching level 10 or above you have the option to promote your character to another class (Knight, Scout, Magician) these can then be promoted again with 2 more classes for each of the classes after unlocking the relevant mentors and building the corresponding buildings available.
I found the best set up to be 2 magicians, a knight and a scout at the beginning and 2 of the dragon knights replacing the scout and original knight later on in the game.
At the end of a set period of time you have to graduate at least one student who is level 10 or above, which will then give you fame which is needed to level up your school so you can place more buildings and unlock further missions in the game.
Story-wise the game is okay with different outcomes available depending on if you choose to complete certain missions or not in the game. It's nothing to really right home about though but is satisfactory still and serves it's purpose.
The game-play just doesn't set the world alight and leaves you thinking what could have been with a few tweaks and changes. So if you are thinking of picking up Valthirian Arc I would watch a few game-play videos first of all, as once you watch one for about 20 minutes or so you will have seen nearly everything in the game as it just rinses and repeats everything in just in slightly different settings. (Grassland, Cave, Desert or on board a boat).
Not amazing, not the worst but an average game that could have been so much more.… Expand
