Mechanically and graphic quality are satisfactory for a ps4 game highlighting what is important in games of this genre its story and characters, the dubbing is good combining with the traditional archetypes of the genre's such as the football player the innocent girl the nerd etc. …

It's easy to emerge in this story that we've already seen being told several times and being intrigued to discover the mystery behind the murders, until dawn fulfills well its proposal to bring the classics of horror from the 80s to the video game and provides an unpretentious and fun experience.

I recommend playing accompanied mainly by people who are not so used to the world of games surely will provide a fun weekend, now if you are looking for a rich experience mechanically or with an elaborated script better to play something else.

It's a solid game that is very unique in the game play however the only thing I did not like was the button decision as sometimes is too fast for one to react, aside from that I enjoy the game.

Quite enjoyable. I know most of the "choices" are illusory, but they were still incredibly engaging. And almost heartbreaking when a character you really tried to keep alive dies :)

I am late to the party with this one. I didn't know this game existed until 2021, when I got my ps5 and this was one of the free games that came with the collection. I was really blown away by how good it was. You can tell the story was written by someone who has a deep understanding of the horror genre. I went in with no expectations, and left wanting more. So I replayed it again. And again. The third time I managed to save all 8 characters (plus wolfie) and it was quite challenging. And it felt so rewarding. Nothing beats the first time though, especially playing with a friend spectating, it really brought the experience to the next level. I am now letting another friend play it through my ps5 via shareplay, and he was instantly addicted to the story just like I was. And I am getting plenty of enjoyment watching him play and make choices, even with me knowing every possible outcome, and Ill keep encouraging my friends to try this game because I want to share this amazing experience with as many people as possible. Maybe I like horror games more than I thought, or maybe it's just my type of game, but either way, if you are remotely interested in horror movies or story driven games, this is really something you need to experience. Everything hit for me. The story was well thought out, interesting, and with more than enough twists and turns to keep it exciting. The pacing was good too. This can be hard to nail properly and at times i thought it dragged ever so slightly but it always felt worth it in the end. The characters were well written and cast. They were clearly inspired by and meant to fit all the classic stereotypes from the horror genre, but none of them felt bland, each one of them had their own unique personality, and they were relatable. This was enhanced by an excellent script with mostly realistic dialogue with an unexpected amount of genuine humor. The voice acting was top tier especially compared to other games. The attention to detail of it all was impressive. I was genuinely amazing at the countless nods to classic horror movies throughout. It was like the creators took every great horror movie, stuck them in a blender, and Until Dawn was the result. You would expect the final product to be bad and sloppy, but somehow they managed to make it the exact opposite and it feels expertly crafted. To add to my positive experience, I noticed very few (if any) bugs/glitches in my play throughs, Also, the graphics were outstanding for me. I had a hard time believing this game was from 2015. This could be due to my particular setup and your experience on a ps4 as opposed to a ps5 might be different. The score was outstanding. Audio in any horror film/game is extremely important for everything from the general vibes, to building suspense at crucial moments. It can make or break this type of thing, and they completely nailed it. From the main theme (O' Death) to all of the other music and sounds you hear, it is just perfect. The game tells you this, but I will reiterate: Your choices MATTER. After multiple play throughs, I noticed tons of changes from a bunch of different dialogues to seeing completely new scenes. This is a double edged sword though, as some choices lead to outcomes that are not as cinematically pleasing as others. In my opinion, there IS a correct way to play the game, but the only way to experience that correct way is to either coincidentally make all the best choices the first time (almost impossible to do) or just do multiple play throughs. If you like the first play through, I promise, going back and making all different choices is well worth it. The final scene aka the boss fight can be great and very intense if you choose a certain way, but can leave a little to be desired if you choose another way. For me, even the worst possible ending was good enough. NOTE: this is more of an interactive movie than a standard video game. Be prepared for a lot of watching and less doing. The beauty of this is that what you see is always entertaining, and changes drastically depending on what you choose. But don't ever think you can put down your controller and relax, because as soon as you do there will be an unexpected quick time event that may or may not have huge ramifications should you miss any buttons. Standard horror rules apply here: If you're a brave soul, play by yourself, at night with noise canceling headphones on, the lights off, and buckle up. If you're of the faint of heart, play with the lights on during daylight hours, preferably with company. Either way you will love it. Expand

    story

The experience around this villa on the mountain and the reunion of this group after the terrible event with the two sisters was very suitable as a basis. Is just this typical horror scenario. Underneath, a myth that came true in the game is packed, which I always like very much anyway.

The characters all had their roles and were different enough, although sometimes I lacked the hysteria given the situation everyone was in. Various crazy things happened and again and again you dealt with it fairly easily (but there were also downright screamers). Certainly there were characters that annoyed me a lot (Emily), but I still wanted to keep everyone alive.

Basically I was satisfied with my decisions, unfortunately the LAST decision caused a triple kill, which I couldn't understand at all at the moment, because 3 people stood together and only one of them ran out, while the other two simply stop and die . Only Mike's death was the one I expected.

What bothered me a little was that it was basically very predictable.

In terms of dialogue, it was okay, but on the trashy level. But some scenes were really good.

    Graphics / performance

The game ran smoothly on the Ps5 and honestly still looks very good. Very nice character models, the atmosphere generated around the mountain, the different impressions of the area, it all looked pretty cool. I was a bit amazed at how good the game still looks.

The characters' facial expressions were usually very well done and Josh in particular had good "acting" moments.

    Gameplay

Typical gameplay for this type of game. Do a lot of walking simulator and look for clues and make fateful decisions. I wouldn't play such interactive "films" all the time, but you can throw in such an offshoot every now and then. The Quicktime events were pretty forgiving, only very few hadn't managed to do it, but only those that you could simply do again.

In retrospect, I absolutely could not say which decisions led to the triple kill, which is a shame, here I am missing a decent summary, such as e.g. after each level in Detroit: Become Human. I didn't really know what to do with these butterfly scenarios. Everyone lived with me until the last decision.

The controls were a bit fiddly in some corners, the characters got stuck on an edge every now and then, it wasn't a big deal, but it bothered me a bit.

    Conclusion

I had fun with the game, it wasn't really scary, but I had a few goose bumps and, funny enough, one or the other jumpscare even caught me (I'm relatively immune to it). With 8/10 trashy dialogues, the game is very well served and I'm rather astonished that the developers with the Dark Pictures Anthology: Men of Medan and Little Hope have declined so much in comparison (for me). Except for the missing co-op aspect, Until Dawn is clearly superior.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Until Dawn can be summed up in one sentence: Those B category horror movies but it's interactive.

In the beginning you get introduced to the main eight characters in the span of like 30 minutes but getting to know them even barely can and does take multiple chapters which to me is slow as hell. Nothing that meaningful or interesting happens in the first few chapters; even in the middle I felt like only a few moments here and there had action or meaningfulness or just something that didn't put my mind on autopilot.

This game hasn't really age well in my opinion. Well, at least the story certainly has not. The visuals still look great, nothing wrong there but the story as I've stated before feels every bit like a semi-garbage horror movie in which everyone makes the dumbest decisions and like a third of the dialog is so cringe you don't want to watch it. The time it got more interesting was when the wendigos showed up. Until then most thigs were not really interesting or significant. There are also some decisions that can be critical for no apparent reason. For example if you shoot Ashley when she and Chris are tied up, she lets Chris die for no reason when a wendigo is chasing him. First off: the bullet was a blank (as Josh explains) and Two: Ashley wanted to save Chris and Three: they doth have a crush on each other; this makes no sense. But I digress, there are some unnecessarily significant choices.

Whether someone likes a character is entirely dependent on them but I disliked Emily the most simple because she was acting like and entitles **** most of the time. My favorite is either Mike or Ashley. I liked Mike because he is the coolest for me and most exciting things happened while he was around. He's just more memorable than the others to me. He's not the most loyal or funny (which is a trait that should've been left out of this game in my opinion because of its insignificancy) so he's not perfect by any means. Ashley was also likeable because she seemed like the most compassionate (which would've been a better choice than funny); well at least in my playthrough, who knows what she would've done if I played differently. Matt was a strong meh; he just didn't get enough screen time. Everyone else was fine enough.

Josh's intentions didn't really make much sense for me. I don't get why he wanted to torture everyone. Yes, his sisters suffered a terrible death but that is no reason for him to make his friends suffer. He clearly suffered major trauma because of the events in the final chapter. He went to a therapist who I really hated. He was so ambiguous most of the time; the time I even remotely liked Dr. Hill was when he was calling Josh a psychopath. His hallucination in the mines just before dawn was giving off exactly how he feels inside and a bit later he gets killed by Hannah's wendigo (which to my knowledge requires a living human but I guess a wendigo bite can resurrect people) which I find odd because, yes wendigos kill people to eat them but it being Hannah had some significance considering it's pointed out in the game but I don't know why it's important.

To fellow people who like the horror genre, most jumpscares won't get you like most didn't get me. There certainly were some very cheap ones where you almost expect to get jumpscared. The wendigod are fairly scary in my opinion; not enough to constantly fear of them whenever they're around but they're scary enough. The sound they make is sort of typical, like you *would* expect a monster that looks like that to screech. The kills they make if where they really shine for me. It was shocking to see Matt just getting hanged by a wendigo or see one break Josh's (and more's if you play like that) head, etc.

For the ending when the people are at the lodge I have to say that that is the most intensive 5 minutes of the game - as it should be since it's the end - I don't know why the wendigos try to kill each other. The don't move sections are awesomely tight. For me the game decided that I moved when I did not and that cost Mike's life. I didn't know Mike died until the house lit ablaze; it seemed like the wendigo just yeeted him out of the way to focus on Sam, like it didn't seem like it hurt at all. This would have made me replay that chapter but I didn't want to play through so much just to get there.

Verdict: I enjoyed my time with Until Dawn for the most part. I wish I wasn't playing this when the writing was cringe/awkward, the controls refused to work at times, or when I had to look up where is something because it was so well hidden I couldn't find it in 10 minutes. It is well worth the $20 on the PS Store or if you find it for cheaper, like I did for $10, definitely give it a try.

Loud is NOT scary, it feels cheap and it is also kind of sad because the game itself is very scary on how well they designed it. Decisions do matter although sometimes you decide for an action and a whole different action in mind then what will get executed eventually, also some QTEs are insanely fast.

Overall the game was amazingly fun and I would definitely recommend it to people who like horror, thrillers combined with QTE adventuring. With the flaws mentioned I would give the game an 8.5 rounding up because of the outstanding game atmosphere.

Easily my favorite game to date. You get so invested into characters just for them to have a chance to be killed off. That’s is where most of the scares are from, scared of losing them because of a wrong choice. Not only is it fun to play but the story is so intriguing and different. I would recommend this to almost everyone!

Really well graphics, creepy atmosphere, authentic Voice Actors and high overall audio quality. Sure, things you can interact with are limited, but that´s not the point in this game. You have to care about your teens and that requires a high level of attention and good reactions at Quick time Events. I really cared about my teens and enjoyed how the story was arranged/set up. Of course you have to deal with immature youngster dialogues and naive but authentic behaviours. It didn´t annoy me at all (well, Emily **** did), instead it assists the immersion of the game in my opinion. I could not experience significant FPS Drops with few little exceptions which doesn´t disrupt gameplay. Until Dawn does an excellent job scaring you!
I´m writing this review during my first session and already had severe decisions to make with even more severe consequences to my youngsters. At this point i predict this game has some replay value because you are able to decide very differently at various points. Full recommendation!

    - the QuickTime events windows are very small, but not impossible to hit. It actually feels satisfying to get the timing.

    - the branching storyline is great. My decisions made an impact on which characters lived or died. Most of the choices were a little ambiguous, but clear enough to get through it with common sense. If I ended up killing a character it was usually my own fault.

    - the game reminds me of final destination. A movie concept I liked.

    - the motion capture was done very well. The emotions of the characters feel organic.

    Bad

    - Chris knows the monsters hunt at night after meeting the old man, so they should have stayed in the basement until dawn. Plot hole.

    - the game is too short.

You will like the atmosphere, and the way the story is delivered, even without the extra scenes (the psychiatrist) and the easter eggs.
You will like the gameplay, it is thrilling and has lots of fun and scary moments, even without those moments where your skill or decision-making can change everything.

With all this said, it is important to note that it acts more as a story-driven adventure game, than a scary atmospheric horror game. You will not be horrified. The atmosphere focuses more on it's beauty than scaring you.

The fact that your choices in the game determine who, if any, of the cast of 8 friends dies helps to keep you on the edge of your seat even when the gameplay consists largely of walking and quick time events. Just knowing that one wrong choice or a slip up during a QTE could lead to a character's death gives some weight to the proceedings.

The plot is very messy and all over the place, but it's still quite gripping. The characters are alright and although some of the early dialogue is a bit cringe worthy, apparently that may have been a deliberate effort to establish a campy 80s slasher vibe. There's some famous faces in Until Dawn and the actors' performances are well translated through the use of motion capture.

Even with a messy plot, some underdeveloped characters and janky walking controls, Until Dawn is an enjoyable experience. The horror is perhaps a little too reliant on jumpscares, but I'd be lying if I said they didn't spook me a number of times. The game does a lot right and if you're in the mood for a good scare, you can't go wrong with this.

But then again, it’s just an illusion. The thing about any of your decisions can completely change the story in the game is not quite accurate, after playing the game for a second time and making completely different decisions the story didn’t change that much, the good thing is that after one of my playthroughs I managed to keep alive the people that I wanted since the beginning.

Another thing that I didn’t like either was the overuse of startles, you cannot call that scary, it's just annoying.

Most of the characters are straight unlikable where you couldn’t care less if they died or are around in-game so little that you wonder what the point of them are. I saw reviews that all said how much they didn’t like Mike but he became my favorite character because he got stuff done and didn’t panic about it.

This whole game banks on the butterfly effect, that every action you make has consequences and will affect the ending of the game. Shocker it doesn’t. Many of the choices end up with the same path, leaving you feeling vastly disappointed. I’m okay with my choices not really making a difference in the game but when you tell me that they do and will and I clearly see they don’t, it’s really a slap in the face and screams of developer laziness. That perhaps they wanted to make this deep game but could not but still pretended that they did. One choice had you choose which person you would rather sacrifice with a ban saw, I chose the girl to save my bro and the game sacrifices my bro. I sat there stunned because I knew I had chosen the proper button, for a while I thought maybe I had messed up, until it turned out that whichever decision you make your bro will die. Then there were weird ‘nature’ decisions that said if you hurt animals or nature would have major consequences, which were just dumb. Many of the choices you could make were dumb, hey you wanna shoot the explosive barrel right in front of you? I’m sure nothing could go wrong, it was literally a death totem. They present these to you so fast that once again they’re just hoping you make a wrong choice, like you have an itchy trigger finger.

Story-wise problems I had is that up until a point (about halfway) the main antagonist (the killer), which I had really cool ideas of who it could be and why (none of which happen), is blatantly revealed to you in the room before you come face to face with the killer, like written on paper and you read it obvious, (you know in case you did no investigating whatsoever), so when the killer takes off their mask and is like dun-dun you’re like ‘yeah I know, I just read it 5mins ago’. And then after this reveal the character promptly drops out of the story, basically forever. And then the whole story takes a shift into the new antagonists. Not the ‘we had parallel plot-lines going and finished up one and continued with the other’, but we started a whole new plotline midgame. A new protagonist is introduced and promptly killed off after he gives you exposition of what’s going on up on the mountain. Basically the game switches into why Mike is my favorite character since you switch over to him and he investigates and solves the whole mystery himself. The second-half plotline should have been the whole game, solving the mystery of what’s happening on the mountains and its dark past was pretty interesting and had me trying to piece it all together. If they had focused on just that, they could have fleshed it out more and made a stronger story and game. The outside narration with the psychiatrist could have just been completely cut out as it served no purpose, once again nothing you said to him matters or really has any effect. …Spiders… Overall, you have to be playing this game really poorly to have anyone end up dead or have the game cheat you at the end. I found totems, made decisions and proper button presses and only had the one person get his head popped like a pimple because suddenly the game wanted you to get off the linear path they put you on to find a journal, basically saying all the other stuff you found telling you about what happened to the sisters, no one knew cuz apparently they don’t talk about this stuff between characters.

The only gripe with gameplay I had was the moments where the game told you to keep the controller steady (as though they thought you were so frightened you’d be shaking and find this impossible). It actually should have told you to keep the controller within the outlined field they had at the bottom of the screen because it artificially moved the icon and you had to move to counteract it. I physically placed the controller on the ground and yet the icon moves anyways. The game is doing it to cheat and make you screw up in pivotal moments, because the first couple times I was so still but it failed.

In the end, most of this game felt like it was just straight up copied from Supernatural’s S1E2 Wendigo episode. I guess the game is worth one playthrough, it does have spooks and some interesting moments, just don’t expect anything spectacular.

For the most part, I was uneasy not because I was fearful of what was going jump out and get me but because I was worried I would hit something wrong or fail a QTE and kill somebody I liked. At first sight this game looks visually unbelievably good. It is obvious that developers wanted to make it look really like an interactive movie but after a while I realised that it has so much makeup on the characters that at the same time it looks somehow totally unreal.

Until Dawn is a story driven game where you have to make choices and you can lead the story in many directions. What will happen to your characters in the story is totally up to you.

The story itself is a classic horror story so to say and it is a total cliche; a group of young, boring (some of them really stupid) teenagers with a very bad sense for humour spend their holiday at a house in the mountains and there is some mysterious horror that they encounter. We have unfortunately seen this so many times in video games, movies… Observing the story, there is nothing fresh or new there.

The gameplay is based on walking around and interacting with things, which feels good in this game that has a stunning graphic. Your choices really have an impact on the story and the ending of it can be with all characters as survivors but your choices could also get them all killed. There is nothing like “game over” in this game so you will have to accept the consequences of your choices. This is the thing that this game does good.

If you do not mind an average scenario, the plot and you do not mind typical commercial American hollywood acting, you might like this game. I enjoyed observing Until Dawn technically. You really want to see the these graphics but the story is not something that you I could call great.

In my opinion, Supermassive Games does a better job of making interactive drama feel more like a video game than Quantic Dream (though I have to say I absolutely loved Detriot in spite of this). Until Dawn was scary, suspenseful and just in general lots of fun. This is how to do a solid horror game. Will definitely play again.

Until dawn is a crazy and an absolutely amazing game. It's roughly 10 hours of game play but every minute of that 10 hours might matter and can effect the final ending. It's truly one of a kind game and a masterpiece. The graphics are amazing, the story builds up quickly with lots of twists and surprises. You have to make quick decisions and the dialogues are very well crafted too. This isUntil dawn is a crazy and an absolutely amazing game. A game that is based on the classic Hollywood horror movie theme, where your decisions lead the storyline to a small extent. I enjoyed playing a lot, but it's not a myth. A production with an above average story and beautiful characters.

I really liked this game, very good graphics, the story shown to be a typical teenage movie but it has an interesting change. Within the interactive games it is very well achieved and the decisions that directly affect the story, anyone can die at any time. The only detail is that it is not properly optimized for the PlayStation 4, various frame rate drops throughout the game.

Awesome game, which focuses primarily on telling a story that is full of twists. Loved the game and already replayed it some times. The horror is absolutely brilliant and although the gameplay is not very interactive, the game is very enjoyable. Need to play it again already.

Yes. This game hits many of those tropes we know and maybe love of teen horror flicks. But the way this game works, the way it looks, and the way it’s written and acted, stunning. This game came out in 2014 as an early PS4 title and yet boy is it polished and man does it still hold up in 2020.

One of my favourite games of all time, it's so special. The story is excellent, the characters are phenomenal & memorable, the graphic is amazing. I reckon it's much better than Life is Strange. Detroit Become a Human is similiar extraordinary like Until Dawn.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. That's enough cool game. If a story was a little longer, it would be gorgeous.

    What don’t I like?
At some points, almost nothing is visible, you just go into the darkness, skipping totems and evidence!
Also, I personally did not like the moments when it was necessary to hold the gamepad motionless, I had to put it on the sofa in order to survive.
In fact, the characteristics do not matter. Even if the character's honesty is 0, you can tell the truth for him. It's kind of silly. Or if the character has curiosity at the maximum level, you can NOT go for noise and survive for him.

    What do I like?
Quite an interesting story, the game did not make me bored.
I liked the mechanics of the totems, their search added some variety to the game.
In addition, you can easily lose one of your heroes (yes, for me this is an advantage).
If during the battle with Wendigo you press the wrong button, then you won’t be able to play anymore for this character
The ending also didn't disappoint me (the game went through, losing only Chris)

The game is worth the money and the time I spent on it, I would give it 8.7-9 / 10

    Contras
    - Puede ser muy lineal para algunos
    - Algunas decisiones no tienen verdadero impacto

I picked this game up quite some time ago with little to no expectations. But oh boy, this turned out better than I anticipated.

Until Dawn is a love letter to horror movies. You can get anything you can expect from a horror story in this game. Creepy locations, wonderful visuals and lighting, a nice mystery and well-rounded cast. Everything works the way it should. If you like

This is the one game that made my buying a PS4 at the time worth it. Not only it has great graphics, but the story couldn't be more interesting and we'll developed. The power of choosing who dies and who doesn't is amazing and really changes the game. Best PS4 game!

I played this game through to completion with friends, and I had a blast exploring the world of Until Dawn. Unfortunately, I got a few people killed in the process :'(

One problem I had with Until Dawn is that your decisions are often guesses at best. Run away or hide? How am I supposed to know which one is right? Even in real-life scenarios you'd probably be depending on luck and guesses, so I won't crucify the game for that.

The characters are rather one-dimensional and stereotypical in nature. Most became so annoying that I'd happily have watched

The characters are rather one-dimensional and stereotypical in nature. Most became so annoying that I'd happily have watched them all die were it not counter-intuitive to winning the game. This is true of a lot of teenage slasher films, so you could also argue they captured this fairly well.

The exploration and character movement however, was painfully slow and monotonous. Sections of the game were tedious and monotonous, meaning I couldn't wait for the final chapter for the wrong reasons. Much of the game was dark, so there wasn't even much interest to be had with manually controlling the character anyway.

The story is decent and not overly complex. I found myself wondering why the hell they chose to come back to a deathly location in the first place, but again this is horror movie logic we're dealing with.

Overall, I want to give kudos for the developers attempting to do something different and would love to see this improved on in future where it could make for a very good game. Life Is Strange showed some very good promise also before faltering in its sequels, so I would love to see this genre expand and evolve. I can still recommend this game, but just know what you're getting into, unlike the kids in this game.

A barely interactive horror film about typical American teenagers. You know, with a cabin. In the woods. And a psychopath. We’ve all seen that, we’ve heard these dialogues, we all know these characters. Still Until Dawn has a pretty good story and is a nice homage to horror flicks and despite being a collection of simple QTE’s can both engage and surprise. [11/2015, p.44]

It's tense, smart, and able to arouse the player's curiosity until the end. Some design choices are a bit controversial, and the acting is not always spot on, but it's definitely a great homage to horror movies.

Gameplay-wise, not exactly a killer app, but anybody who looks at those visuals will be dead impressed. Short, but plenty of reasons to replay, and it’s the spookiest game since Alien: Isolation. [November 2015, p72]
