Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is often praised as the pinnacle of the series, and with good reason. It takes the elements that made the previous games so popular and improves on them in almost every way. The evolution of relationships between main characters, like Nathan and his brother Sam, is especially captivating.
Although "Uncharted 4" is not an open-world game, it offers players a remarkable sense of freedom of exploration. Levels are vast and expansive, allowing players to decide how to approach challenges and enemies. This is a welcome change from previous games, which were more linear in terms of progression. The ability to use verticality and choose your own path to achieve goals makes the experience more dynamic and immersive.
The puzzles in "Uncharted 4" have been significantly improved compared to previous games in the series. They are more complex and involved, requiring logical thinking and attention to detail. The puzzles integrate well with the narrative and environment, providing a more rewarding and challenging puzzle-solving experience.

Uncharted 4 was the first ps4 game I played. I played it in 2016, shortly after its release, as my ps4 console came with a free copy of the game - and I was blown away by many things. Perhaps without it, i would not have embarked on such a gaming journey, or had such a thirst for single player, narrative-driven games. I decided to revisit the game in 2023.

The good: the way the tutorial was seamlessly incorporated into the game, the graphics and attention to detail in this linear game still hold up today. Chapter 10 (Madacascar) is one of the best looking, well-crafted, iconic, and fun locations I have ever played. Sam and Sullivan are not just pleasant company but also helpful and intelligent/insightful, on top of being written like veritable adults. The puzzles, the climbing, the variety of locations and guns. The way u can choose between 2 methods of playing/killing (stealth and/or overt shooting). The writing and the way they talk like real adults is refreshing. as a kid I did not pay as much attention to the themes of the story or the dialogue credibility, but now, which a bit more age and maturity, I can retrospectively see how awesome these were. I think the length and difficulty were appropriate. It also has an underrated soundtrack: it sounds like its from a high budget 2000s movie with all the orchestral music/instruments it contains. It also does a good job conveying sadness when needed, and the sense of adventure too. It constantly made me think/picture about the old age of naval piracy. A fantastic, well-suited original soundtrack. Finally, the colour modes and photo mode are things I count as positives.

What could have been improved: they should have added a crouch button and sprint button. The option to pick which cover to go to (show it clearly, like the division's cover system). The render distances are not great. It is noticeable/distracting (u notice how bad quality far away objects/places are) but this was an early ps4 title, im viewing this game through a ps5/2023 lens.

Conclusion: what a game, the graphics barely show signs of being outdated, 6 years later. Naughty dog's linear yet high budget and meticulously crafted levels and animations makes for a very gripping and satisfying game. The gameplay is fun, the story and its themes are interesting and relatively relatable. The characters are well written and play important and memorable roles. there is never a dull moment really, and the game is not too long nor too short. an iconic, staple of the ps4 and of story-driven single player games. I have few criticisms, except there isnt much replayability in my opinion, which is the main factor of the score not being higher: I give the game 85/100.

The story is surprisingly good; the plot seems simple at first, but the writing, the dialogue and the characters are awesome, and they make up for the simplicity of the plot.
The gameplay is quite simple as well, but it's enjoyable and it feels satisfying.
The graphics and the audio are absolutely incredible! Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is probably one of the best looking games I've ever played and it has some spectacular set-pieces.
Now... although the ending itself is awesome, I felt like the last few hours before the ending were a tiny bit tedious; in fact, the pacing in general feels slightly padded at times.
Also, while the combat system is fun, the gameplay loop feels monotonous and basic for the most part.

    Pros:
    + Great narrative
    + Likable and engaging characters
    + Dialogue/humor
    + Fun gameplay
    + Superb visuals and set-pieces

    Cons:
    - Inconsistent pacing
    - Repetitive gameplay loop

Uncharted 4 Review in 2023 (no story spoilers)

At the time in 2016 when Uncharted 4 was released worldwide it was a genre defining game and a huge step up from not only its previous entry in the series ‘Uncharted 3 Drake's Deception’ but a huge leap in the action adventure genre. Today Uncharted 4 is still one of the best.

Early on Nate is living a ‘normal’ life after retiring from treasure hunting but in need of help, his long lost brother Sam Drake persuades Nate to come out of retirement to help him find the pirate treasure of Henry Avery. From there Nathan & Sam Drake embark on a challenging and epic journey to track down the long lost treasure of Henry Avery.

Adventuring through each section of the game is so enjoyable and truly unforgettable. The level design is truly next level. Exploring the many locations of the game was remarkable and memorable. One moment you’ll be exploring, climbing with a little parkour, solving puzzles, fighting enemies, playing through some of the most iconic moments in a video game ever, and listening in on key conversations.

Each area of the game you can explore looking for collectibles such as journal notes that tell you its own story. The game is filled with a bunch of hidden secrets that have a meaning behind them. Uncharted 4 has much larger scaled areas to explore than the previous three games in the series by a mile. Climbing is a very frequent maneuver you will perform a lot during the game. Some areas you traverse will leave you in awe. Puzzles are nothing new when it comes to Uncharted, they are never difficult but are quite fun and creative. You will encounter a wide variety of enemies making some encounters more difficult than others. It will be up to you how you handle certain encounters. Do you wanna go loud and proud or do it quietly? And when I talk about iconic I mean it, Uncharted 4 has some of the most epic and iconic moments ever in a game. It will make you want to come back and keep revisiting these moments. Playing Uncharted 4 is truly an experience.

STORY: The story is very deep and thrilling, the dialogue is funny and entertaining throughout. A lot of emotions are brought out in the characters, making them feel real. Character development is a big focus, you will learn a lot about the characters the more you play even some of the more minor characters. As the player, during my first play through I felt very connected and on edge at times not knowing what could happen. The game is very well paced and has a nice flow. A little detail to note that I love is how Nate makes funny comments while in combat or at times you will find him talking to himself.

GAMEPLAY: The gunplay in Uncharted 4 feels very natural and smooth, not janky at all. You have a wide range of weapons you can use from pistols, long guns and your heavy weapons such as RPGs. Don’t forget you got your grenades as well. A new gameplay feature that was introduced into the game is the grapple hook, which is one of my favorite features in the game. The grapple hook can be used to swing from one platform to another or you can use it in combat to take out enemies from above (it never gets old). Swinging in the air above enemies then jumping on them and eliminating them is tons of fun. For more fun while hanging from the rope you can shoot enemies or toss a grenade, might make aiming more hard but it’s worth it.

Melee combat is smoother than ever and has some of the most badass animations including team takedowns.

A huge improvement by far in Uncharted 4 from the previous games is stealth. Stealth is a game changer and ultimately satisfying. You can use tall grass to hide from enemies and use it as a way to hide bodies that way the enemy won’t know of your presence therefore will not call for backup. You can also hide on the side of a cliff hanging below an enemy waiting for the right moment to throw the enemy off. While in stealth if you get spotted and enemies start shooting you you can always try and hide to go back into stealth. An excellent new addition to stealth is the alert indicator and the ability to mark enemies which furthers the advancement of stealth.

GRAPHICS: Graphically the game is breathtaking in every single part of the game. It’s a very beautiful and impressive game, especially for it being released when it was. The amount of little details in the game makes it even more insane. Visually the game looks very alive and realistic.

The soundtrack is fantastic, I love it! It feels very adventurous if that makes sense.

The voice acting is top tier! Having Troy Baker and Nolan North together is just superb.

After playing through Uncharted 4 at least ten times (I lost count) it always impresses me each time and leaves me hoping for another adventure with Nathan Drake. Naughty Dog never disappoints. Uncharted 4 is my second favorite game of all time.

Uncharted 4 is a masterpiece and a milestone in gaming.

Upon release Uncharted 4 was immediately heralded as the greatest game to ever exist and awards, including game of the year, were dropped upon it. Those critics and people have clearly all been drinking the Kool-Aid because this is one of the worst games I’ve ever played. It’s funny because it’s not even that this game is a broken mess, it’s not, though it certainly has its buggy moments. No, instead this game is so fundamentally flawed on every level.

Uncharted 4 was said to have a new writer after the last left and that they scrapped her draft, but it’s so clear that they used most of it and probably just tweaked or added a few things. Because this story is so in line with the last three, so copy/paste, just following the same beats they always have. The story doesn’t even get truly rolling until Chapter 17 (of 22!), as usual the whole beginning of the game has no bearing on the rest. The amount of times the characters are mocking the annoying parts that are put in every game: ‘Oh look an entryway is caved in. Again.’ ‘Do you notice we crawl through a lot of holes?’

The Uncharted series is probably hurt the most from the fact that it never has its own identity. Every game stole from other games (Tomb Raider. Prince of Persia, Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, etc) and movies (Indiana Jones, The Mummy, etc) and thus never managed to pull off any of their aspects better than the original source material. It’s so much fun to climb buildings and other things in AC because you get to choose where to go. Here, there’s one set path and if you don’t take it, you fail, the game can’t continue.

I felt that the Pirates of the Caribbean movies were more faithful to pirate history than this game. Nothing says ‘I didn’t do my research’ like throwing in every pirate name they could find no matter that none of them operated during the same time period.

Gameplay comprises of the old wall-climbing, which is no different from the very first game. This time around, they did steal the ice-pick idea from Tomb Raider, which served no real purpose as it doesn’t show up til 2/3 through the game. The puzzles were so cheaply done, I felt no satisfaction from completing them, and then there were short combat ‘encounters’ which last usually around 5mins. And parts that aren’t combat or wall-climbing? Well those are cutscenes! And the cutscenes, especially at the beginning, were ridiculous! Who allowed them to be so lengthy? I was actually able to put my controller down on the ground for awhile. They didn’t even provide much to the story; I certainly didn’t need 20mins of watching Nate and Elena in boring ‘domestic bliss’. (About 8 hours of gameplay and 5 hours of cutscenes)

They actually put in a whole section of you being forced to play Crash Bandicoot while the characters go ‘wow what a fun game!’ Pat yourself on the back much Naughty Dog? All it does is showcase how they haven’t grown as a gaming company much since their Crash days. Uncharted even has the run at the camera sequences that are so hated!

Let’s talk about that garbage epilogue. Just throwing in your face how Nate could have gone legit for his whole life and still gone treasure hunting AND become rich but no they didn’t feel that would make a good story. Also, good god Nate and Elena describe their travels yet AGAIN!! I was there I don’t need to be reminded every second of their past failed adventures. Sure they discovered something but no one ever found out and they destroyed it so who cares?

And people worship the ground at Naughty Dog’s feet? Have they never played an actual GOOD game?? I can in no way recommend these games. A great story and fun gameplay is what keeps people coming back, what gives it replayability. This series has none of that.

Stating that the forthcoming game will be the last rendezvous with a popular, charismatic hero is a rare phenomenon. I congratulate Naughty Dog on their courage and in spite of myself keep my fingers crossed for them to stick to their decision. The farewell party they threw for Nate is simply spectacular. This is how I want to remember him, not as an old man who rubbed his joints with pain cream and then found a UFO. Uncharted 4 is a brilliant game and a breathtaking demonstration of what PS4 is capable of. [07/2016, p.56]
