From the moment you start the game it introduces its tone beautifully, it is dark, violent, and empowering, it is intriguing and you want to find more about what lies beyond the menu screen.
For options you get different levels of difficulty, easy, medium, and hard, the ability to change controls to three different presets, also exists, one of which I found to be quite comfortable for todays standards, and you can also get to setup, sound options, such as the level of music, and the ability to change the game's brightness level.
The game has a diverse cast of characters all of which have tragic stories that are presented in three different segments, on one side the issue that afflicts the character, then the cause for such issue, and finally the resolvement.
The premise relies on a character named Calypso which conditions the "correction" of each character's affliction to the completion of a competition.
Between loading screens you get to read different comments from each character adding further depth into the characters backstories, as well as their personalities.
The gameplay mostly consists in driving around a series of post apocalyptic scenarios, fantastical ones, and realistic ones, whilst shooting machine guns, missiles, and unique special attacks for each individual character, in order to destroy your enemies.
The goal of each stage is to beat the 8 contestants beside you, it never gets repetitive, it never becomes jarring, but it does become frustrating at times.
Twisted Metal: BLACK is a game that demands you to use all of the tools to your advantage, and it is a challenging game, my recommendation is to play this game on the easiest setting and focus on trying to practice against your enemies before bumping up the difficulty.
The boss fights, which are only two, require a bit more of an strategy other than to shoot your enemies, mostly revolving around detroying the shields of each vehicle before actually being able to harm the boss in any way.
If the game gets too hard during the boss battles the game allows you to use easy to input cheat codes at any time, effectively reducing any type of frustration you might experience.
The game also doesn't disable trophies for using such cheat codes, which for me personally served as a godsend given that I could finally practice with the game's controls and mechanics before actually starting to play without god mode on, or without the one hit kill cheat code.
Beyond this there isn't much to be said about Twisted Metal: BLACK.
It is a game that retains its unique and brutal impact in the form of each characters narrative, and in the form of a fast paced, frantic, and extremely violent gameplay, it is a rush to the senses and a wondorous experience filled with adrenaline and visceral joy.
The game has multiple game modes, such as endurance which pins you in a survival experience against multiple enemies without giving you any extra lives, it also has challenge mode which serves as a versus mode to play against another player, or alternatively against another a.i. you can choose up to 8 different opponents, or randomize the selection of them.
There are also arenas to unlock, as well as characters, all of which require you to explore different parts of the massive and open levels often times requiring you to destroy a particular object or even make a bit of platforming with your car in order to reach your goals.
None of it is mandatory nor too frustrating and there are many guides on how to obtain all of this easily.
As my second Twisted Metal game, having played the ps3 game of the same name before, I got to say I was quite pleseantly surprised by this game, I was quite concerned when people told me it was going to be too difficult given the fact that because of time constraints, as well as a lack of patience I don't tend to enjoy challenging video games in the least.
But thanks to the cheat codes, and the added difficulty options I could enjoy this game a heck of a lot more than the most recent Twisted Metal for ps3 which sadly is missing both of these "features".
I definitely recommend this brutal, twisted, and extremely enjoyable game, specially since now a days you can get it on a sale for three dollars or less.… Expand
