Only those who played the original can appreciate the good work done on this remake. The nostalgia of it all is such a bliss to wander in again. The music, artwork and enhanced game features cannot be talked about enough. Thank you Square Enix for this beautiful release.

I do have a few minor complaints though. The missing multiplayer is unfortunate (though understandable), and the difficulty is fairly low even on hard mode. A few story scenes could have also benefitted from a retooling, as the characters make some bone-headed decisions along the way (looking at you, Riesz). But considering how good everything else is, it's easy to forgive those flaws. If you like JRPGs then this is definitely worth picking up.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A fun game which isn't too demanding. My biggest worry for this game was that it was going to be too easy, this isn't the case and It gets harder as the game progresses. Love the music, the art style is colourful and bright, cartoony but doesn't bother me. Characters are fun, the voice acting isn't the best out there but overall I enjoyed it and found it somewhat charming. Combat isn't too bad, I've heard complaints that it is too simple but with my team Rune Seer (magic dps), Liege (heals and debuffs) and Starlancer (team buffs) it has been going great. Though the AI could be better.

The story isn't going to blow your mind or make you have some kind of realisation. Well.... maybe that you shouldn't expect too much ;)

Happy they've remade this game as now I'm interested in the series, it has been a chill experience. Oh @Square if you happen to read this please add some rings that prevent you from levelling as it is too easy to overlevel before you reach your third class. Free dlc? Then make there sell value 0.

Replay value is one of its best strengths as you can play 24 different 2nd class.
I will say 10/10 for old-time fan and 8/10 for newcomers, hence 9/10 score overall.

You have six different characters with their own background and motivations, which encourages multiple playthroughs. Tons of customization and abilities for your party. Sure, the story isnt great but it is really irrelevant. I found it to be entertaining at least. English voice acting isnt the best either but you can always choose the japanese.

All in all, this is a masterful remake and tribute to one of the best RPGs of the SNES and a great way to experience a game that many have not played.

This is a remake done correctly, as charming as the original, the story isn't original but it's easy to follow and still holds it's weight. The voice acting is kind of bad, but most fans of the series will be using Japanese voices regardless. A faithful remake through and through.

What an incredible remake. The voice acting is really well done and the combat is much much more fluid. I’m upset the multiplayer got taken out but they really made this a lot more accessible. A bit easier than the original but I don’t have any other complaints besides those. Will post full review after I finish the game a couple times :)

Pros: Faithful remake with gorgeous graphics, gameplay, and fun and engaging story. A huge improvement to the original combat system with tons of cool tweaks and character progression. Full of 90’s JRPG tropes which should please most fans of the genre. Character design resembles Dragon Quest. Colourful environments with tons of exploration and combat to keep you busy. Cons: -Voice acting may not be its shining point (note: YOU CAN TURN THIS OFF OR SWITCH THE LANGUAGE - not a big deal)
    -No multiplayer (original had multiplayer)
-Needs a bit more polish gameplay-wise as it is quite faithful to the original game in such a way that Secret of Mana was, however this isn’t necessarily a “bad” thing. Overall this deserves an 8.5 with the potential to be improved to a 9 due to some polish needed in areas of voice acting and gameplay. The colourful and inviting atmosphere the game presents coupled with an interesting story that encourages multiple playthroughs with charming characters and a highly engaging combat system with a small learning curve. ENJOY!

I liked this game, despite the cons below, it delivers fun and satisfaction, 9 out of 10. I had an experience of playing two JRPG in the past: FF7 Remake and Dragon Quest 11, so I compared it to them. Consider this game mostly as action RPG, despite the ability to pause the game and make the order. It's kinda similar in that sense with FF7 Remake, but I used it much less often.

Consider this game mostly as action RPG, despite the ability to pause the game and make the order. It's kinda similar in that sense with FF7 Remake, but I used it much less often.
I played with the party: Angela (mage), Duran (fighter), and Charlotte (priest), kinda classic. It took me about 25-30 hours to complete the game fully on hard difficulty.

    Pros:

    - Nice-looking graphics
    - This game is less complicated and routine in terms of RPG, item, fight gameplay system then FF7 Remake and DQ 11, but still, they are things and to think and care about, and I liked it.
    - It's easy to play and it is quite dynamic both in terms of fights and story evolution. It's not hard to complete the game even on hard difficulty, but that's ok, I perceive it as a game feature, it's simpleness.
KQ11 had also easy fights, but that turned out to be a fat minus, because of turn-based combat. Make fights simple and fast (in terms of time) or difficult and long, but not easy and long.
    - The game has end game content (do not skip end titles), including new game plus. Since they are six characters to play with, it seems to me that the second walkthrough won't be very repetitive and routine, if you will choose another three to play with.
    - The exploration element of gameplay, a search of treasure chests, and other items are fun. Maps are not complicated and scenes are diverse.

    Cons:

-AI of allies is far from perfect in terms of evading of the boss attacks, I had situations where they die many times on bosses with massive AOE damage, they simply got all damage from boss attacks. That was very annoying. Allies from FF7 Remake do not suffer so much in boss fights. Few times, I had a situation when I had to kill boss alone with most of his HP remaining, with one character, Duran, which I control myself. My allies just died constantly and were kinda useless.
I assume, If I hadn't got a healer in the party situation with bosses maybe even worse.
    - There no range attackers in this game and mage (Angela) is like a weak fighter with spells. Until the end of the game, Angela was not very useful at all. Duran was simply outvaluing her easily with his saber attacks. But in the end, when her spell damage became massive and mana problems were not so severe, she became a brutal force.
    - Most boss fights are less dramatic and interesting the FF7, though some of them are good and interesting. Many of them have the same mechanics of generating some bodies (columns, statues, spheres, etc) which you have to kill fast, or they will deliver a massive and hurtful AOE attack. Repetitive.
    - It's not obvious, how the stats system works, for example, how 1 point in luck affects my crit rate or 1 point in stamina affects health (does it?), aside from abilities. It's like a black box when u put points in stats but you do not fully realize how it will work out.
    - I didn't like the idea of farming of class items for switching to 3rd class, that was kinda annoying. I wanna switch right after level cap! As a consequence, my mage class, Angela, was not switching till 48 level, because I hadn't got the necessary item. No fun.
    - Most of the time mobs respawn in the locations after several minutes of their death, I do not like that feature in games.

    P.S. I hadn't played the original.

The graphics of ToM are perfectly suited. The anime style allows the melodramatic and vibrant gameplay to shine. It won't be pushing the PS4 to the limit, but it's fit for purpose and that's fine. The only downside is that the aged limitations sometimes show in the environments being quite linear and lacking detail, but I always found it mostly pleasant to look at.

The gameplay of ToM is surprisingly engaging for a very old game. I haven't played the original, but if the content found here is present in the original, then it is a hell of a game for 1995. Having said that, some of it is quite confusing. 'Classes' work a lot like Pokemon evolutions, but needing a class item at level 38 to reach level 3 was really irritating as ultimately finding the item is luck-based. I was closer to the end of the game than I'd like by the time all three characters were fully evolved.

Another bizarre mechanic is the difficulty. I played about 1/3 of the game on Normal difficulty, but this was more effort than it was worth especially with boss battles as these deteriorated into protracted heal-revive-heal situations. When I reduced to beginner difficulty the game became much more enjoyable and I realised the biggest change is enemies' HP being like sponges on higher difficulties. In addition to this, boss battles often bring a serious difficulty spike, KO-ing your characters out of the blue. I find it hard to recommend the higher difficulties.

The combat of the game is very enjoyable, with combo attacks, class strikes, magic and charge attacks to choose from. With three characters also this provides quite a bit of diversity, as your enemies can become quite repetitive.

The story of ToM is fairly standard in terms of RPGs and contains a lot of typical cliches and tropes, which shouldn't be surprising for a game from 1995. You are given three characters and it appears you are expected to replay the game to learn the stories of the others, which can be longevity for some gamers but I could not be bothered with that. Also of note is that after the credits roll I have found some end-game content too so this is very interesting. If you're after longevity and don't mind repetition, ToM will give you your fill.

Overall, ToM is an impressive remake. It has the charm and engaging gameplay to keep you motivated through a story that doesn't drag out too much. There is a fair bit of repetition like in most RPGs but odds are you will be accustomed to this. ToM is a game I can recommend. I haven't played many of the rest of the series (except SoM remake, which I hated) but still managed to enjoy this independently.

When a company realizes his mistakes in remastering a beloved game and thinks what went well in the original game to keep or enhance, and they change what did not work in the game to revamp the experience, you get one of the best remasters of all. Trials of Mana is the perfect example of how you should rethink systems and concepts by changing what did not work before and keeping the best of what the game had.

    SETTING
in a land bursting with Mana, the evil Dragon Emperor, the Dark Lych, and the Dark Lord are all trying to get their hands on the Mana Stones to reach the holy island of Mana where the Mana Tree resides and ruin the world. In this high fantasy world, you can choose 3 out of 6 characters to lead a quest in order to get the Mana Sword and avoid the evil Benevodons to wrack the world.
You get the chance to select 3 characters and depending on your choice, the main antagonists will change. This adds replay ability as story elements will change with different characters.

    MECHANICS
    • Combat:
Flawless. That is my word for the combat, as it is an ARPG in which you can unleash combos and avoid attacks while building up power and discharge devastating moves onto foes or use magic points to cast spells on them. The system is great, and the combat is fast paced. Do not think you can smash your way out of it, as there are battles where you need to avoid enemy attacks. The range of the enemy attacks is seen now as a red shadow and you have time to anticipate those, so you can try and avoid them. No more automatic attacks for enemies and bosses, it is all done in real time, and I appreciate that change as you are in total control of maneuvering your characters and tactically prepare your attacks. Combat was not revamped but enhanced, and it looks and feels great.

    • Exploration:
There is now a map, so exploration is less complex than in the original game. You will find items along the way and as the game is not open world, areas are still expansive. There are many enemies along the way, and you will not get tired of exploring as characters are nimble. You can walk and run at your leisure, and the overall feeling of exploration is great. Whenever I went into a new area I tried to search for every nook and cranny to get items or discover chests. The full 3D map is great addition to the game, and you will feel immersed by it.

    • Menus:
Completely revamped, the menus are a great change. With new options to equip shared abilities (like recovering a % of Hp after every battle) you will be changing your tactics to adjust to your gameplay. The Menus are less complex to access, and I welcomed this change. They added an option on difficulty level, which I love.
Navigating menus is just that great, that you will be exploring everything time and again, every time you get a new piece of equipment or a new skill. And watching your character models in the main menu with their new equipment and weaponry will never get old.
You can also begin a new game+ once you have finished the game and enjoy the skills you had. This is pivotal to increase the difficulty!

    VISUALS
Now we are talking. This is a gorgeous game in terms of graphics. I do not need real face animations to feel right at home, the characters retain some of their cheesy look, but they are less cute and more grounded to reality. I liked that, especially with the enhancements in terms of weaponry and when switching classes. The game is bursting with life. Cutscenes are added to explain how the story moves and it was a nice addition as well, as this feels like story driven game. I was surprised by some of the character models, especially some main antagonists. Bosses are huge and you will enjoy the battles a lot. Even in lower difficulties they can give you a blast!
Models in this game may seem plain, but I think they work out just fine. I loved all of the characters, and yes, there are some super cute foes there but they are not over exaggerated, so no worries there.

    SOUND
Continuing with the trend of amazing music as its predecessor, Trials of Mana has an incredible soundtrack. The game balances the heat of battle with the beautiful score of some places. And you can hear the original score if you do not want to hear the original. You can change the voice language in the game and playing it in Japanese is a total blast.

    FINAL VERDICT:
My final Verdict is 10.0 for the game.

I think Square-Enix learned from their mistake with Secret of Mana and did everything well with this iteration. This is the perfect example of remastering an incredible game. I love this game; it is a dream come true… I can only hope they release Secret of Evermore with these systems. Thank you Square-Enix, you nailed it here!

Back in 1995, Trials was unparalleled in its adaptability, even when it came to its story– you choose a party of three out of six possible characters to take on a journey to restore the sacred Mana tree and hopefully stop wars breaking out between different factions. Some parts of your characters’ backstories will overlap, leading to shared experiences. However, despite new additional lines, interactions between characters can feel random, and the dialogue doesn’t hold up for a modern game. The English voiceover, too, strongly varies in quality. A win for fans, Trials Of Mana nonetheless proves not every game ages well. [Issue#176, p.74]
