This was the next in series after American Wasteland I played, so I had good expectations (though of course I've read bad reviews of Shred and Ride).
This is a serious downgrade from series and has nothing to do with going to roots. Why the hell flatland tricks, stickerslap, wallplant and walking were considered not-roots and were left out, while all these stupid power-ups and over-the-edge arcade stuff are somehow is roots? WTF?! Nevermind the overwhelming amount of glitches and bugs, you have to get your skill down and get used to NOT doing flatland tricks and stickerslapping (which I used alot!).
Level design is boring to say the least, even THPS1 had better level design.
This could be good for people who never played TH series before, but omni-present glitches and bugs destroy their experience in first 30 minutes. And I'm not even exaggerating here. My younger brother tried to play this game and he quitted after 30 minutes.
These guys were brave enough to slap 60$ price on this piece of...
And 7 Gig day one update? When the game is just under 5 Gb? This is a joke!
Do yourself a favor and don't buy this game. If you have PS4 then you're outta luck because there is no skating game for our platform available yet (except for OlliOlli). Xbox One owners will soon be able to play Tony Hawk's American Wasteland which is by far is the best TH title, IMO. I never played Proving Ground or Project 8, but I think that they're still good considering that Neversoft made them. It's definitely better than THPS5.
Ok, gotta go and get my refund for THPS5.

This one sadly does not meet with my expectations. This has to be the worst main THPS title I've ever played. Most of the gameplay is fast, which is good, but it also feels unnatural and downright annoying at times. The physics are still very strange and unnatural. The music is amazing, no lie there. I enjoyed every song in the soundtrack. But, it doesn't tell me what song is playing, so I have to take wild guesses as to what's playing. Create a Park is amazing. I loved it. But, create a skater was basically replacing an existing skater over, which I find very lazy and boring. Even worse, you only had preset heads and clothing. And most of the clothes is just recolors. Level design is okay but feels boring, most notably School III and Bunker. It feels old and not in a good way. Graphics are okay, but it doesn't really matter. Slam button is really annoying and special bank is not very good. You can basically never bail now. Leaned too much to the left, you just end you grind and so on. Basically, the only way to bail is if you land sideways. I feel like this game was a cheap, pandering, lazy, cash grabbing, uninspiring idea that Activison probably only did this for the money and nothing else. Robomodo fails once again to give us the game all THPS/THUG fans have been yelling at them to do for the last 8 years. And Activision got our money again. If Robomodo/Disruptive Games do indeed fix all the bugs, put a bit more effort into the game, hell, even use the same engine as THPS4/THUG, they could make the series great again, but I doubt it. If they were to release a THPS 6, it'll probably be filled be the one to destroy all THPS fans. I rather play THUG Pro (a THUG 2 PC mod) than this really terrible sequel to a used-to-be amazing franchise. What Tony Hawk should do is play THPS4 and THUG1-2 and feel the controls and then make sure that their next game feels like those games. Expand

Tony Hawk's Underground was a phenomenal game. Visuals should not warrant such poor reviews alone. this is not a game billed for aesthetic pleasure. Skating games at their core are about game play. The lack of a true customization of a character physically is rather disappointing. in the previous iterations of the game they had both the professionals and a character created player Also in this game it does not have an ability to get off of the skateboard and run around and or climb. even if it was just climbing a high dive to bomb into a pool. I am also saddened by the lack of story driven single player like in underground. The aspect of starting off small in a hometown or somewhere but as you got better, learned more skills and did missions you modified your environment, opening new zones and new missions was a really fun aspect. doing special moves is in this is not as satisfying as it was in previous games. i felt a joy in memorizing down left triangle for my special grind. This is the game in relation to its legacy and its lacking in relation to those. Viewed as a stand alone piece it is not bad. the motions are simple to learn but can be improved upon to refine to perfection and a high degree of skill. the physics are enjoyable, i like the addition of the stomp skating mechanic. I have not had time yet to attempt the create your own skate-park but i always enjoyed that in previous games so glad to see it present. The music to the game is fantastic, it has a good modern punk vibe that is familiar to the skater culture, Yet the game play itself does not feel punk. even when you would tag walls or slap stickers when you did wall plants, or hit things with your skateboard to just break things, it does not have such a rebellious feel. the level design as far as i have seen is really strong with different ways to go through each level and do what type of skating you like. If i had 0 expectations about what this game would be like or played its previous versions I would consider this a worthwhile purchase. as of now i am unsure if it was really worth it. On a side note in response to what a lot of people I see complaining about it not having local coop. I can completely understand not adding a local coop aspect to the game. to add a local coop can be a big time investment and for how much actual reward. how many people would have bought this game only if it had local coop added to it. the majority of people playing together will be online. I play games constantly with my friends. yet it has been 2 years since I have played a game with a friend physically beside me. Like a conservative parent of a punk rock child, You let me down Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5, I know you could have been so much more and i hope you can figure it out and get better. Expand

It's like the first Tony Hawk game. You can't get off your board, no story, and no multiple grind / manual combos.. I'm a little disappointed i guess i was expecting it to be like the underground games which are way more fun than this. It's still fun i guess. Really they took two steps forward and one step back on this. I'd honestly rather play a remake of the underground games.

Speaking as someone who owns, and has played the game, I'm not quite sure what people expected with they bought it. It was labelled and advertised as Tony Hawk *Pro Skater 5*, a moniker the series hasn't had since at least 2001. It was labelled and advertised as Tony Hawk *Pro Skater 5*, a moniker the series hasn't had since at least 2001. THPS5 is and always was a throwback to the nostalgia-days of what started the franchise, and honestly, if this had been released in 2001, it would've been heralded as the best in the series (possibly, 2 is still pretty great). That's not to say the mechanics are so outdated it would've been great 14 years ago, but that they're tried and tested and people really enjoyed how the Pro Skater games played as a whole. This game is simply acknowledging the interest.
The graphics aren't 'Next-gen' worthy, and are more suitable for Last-gen overall, but that doesn't take away from the experience, at least for me. The free-skate menu is straightforward, enjoyably so, and skating with 19 other people is a neat experience. Having only dabbled in the other game modes, I can say the multiplayer only makes them worthwhile, especially with friends. Modes like Big-Head mode, and Deathmatch can be a riot with others. The "Create-a-Skatepark" is fun, and simple for its uses, and having large lobbies on zany, user-created levels is something I can appreciate.
Maybe you could argue the game's content misses the mark for it's price-tag, but it is still a fun time. If you spent hours in the other Pro Skater games, you'll more than likely spend hours on this one, as I have.

Finally, if you have some money to throw around, this isn't a bad purchase. It's exactly what I expected it to be, and I am thoroughly enjoying it as a game where I can just chill, and have fun without focusing too hard. It's the kind of game you have fun playing when you want to relax and unwind.
It's not ground-breaking, it's not game of the year material, but it is NOT a bad game like other blatant reviews would have you think. Manage your expectations, and it's worth picking up. If $60 seems unreasonable to you, wait for a price-drop or rent it, but just know you'll have a good time playing it. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 is not reinventing the franchise, fleshing it out, or even advancing it technically. It's just meeting the status quo of the series, not unlike an HD-remake of sorts. I'd give it a 7.5, but it'd be closer to an 8 for me since that isn't an available scoring.

This game strips away everything that was an improvement on the genre over the years and then claims to be 'taking it back to the roots' without the ability to sit on a couch with a friend and have a good time together playing a video game. I was fooled and fell onto the hype wagon with zero information about the changes. I haven't played since THUG2 and just assumed that each tony hawk game included the cool mechanics from the previous ones. Robomodo and Disruptive games blew it, hopefully they save face with a content patch. All glitchy and bugginess aside, the game is lacking a ton of basic features that are expected. I am a long time THPS fan and this is a great entry in the franchise. It is not supposed to be "realistic" so dont compare it to Skate in terms of graphics or controls. It is over-the-top wild skateboarding action with crazy characters and abilities. I am currently a robot-mech dude with Octo-dad's head. And I can even play as lil wayne! Thats hilarious.

I dont like having to load in and out of freeskate mode for every challenge or mission. That and the buggy framerate are why i gave an 8/10.

Now let me briefly go into the gameplay and presentation: As ugly as the game is, it still suffers from major framerate drops. The "seamless" online interaction is buggy and even the music suffers from hiccups. All the stages are uninspired and could literally be made in the Create-A-Park mode by anyone with 15 minutes to spare. The controls are just slightly less clunky than in Tony Hawk HD but you will probably be to annoyed with technical problems to even notice.

This game is a disgrace to the Tony Hawk franchise and you should avoid it at ALL COSTS.

In case you're wondering, I played the game for a little more than an hour last night & early this morning, and I have to say I'm just angry with Tony and his team for even making this game. It's such a slap in the face to every kid like myself who grew up loving the original games and has been waiting for a better version to come out. The final word is this: EA skate 3 on PS3 is a way better game in every conceivable way, period.
There's one thing I can't stand about this game, aside from the downright awful graphics (and I mean awful; I can't believe this game was made in 2015 for the "New Generation" of video games), the number-one thing that gets me about THPS5 is the gimmicky feel of how the game plays; everything has this comic book -like feel to it that just ruins the experience. Whether it's the overly float-y graphics, or the ridiculous wisps of light and sparks that your skateboard leaves in its wake. Skateboard trucks do not spark when you grind against anything, so why should they in a game that's supposed to simulate skateboarding? As with just about everything in the game, it just doesn't make sense. Another thing that doesn't make sense is buying this game when there's EA's Skate 3; Skate 3 is almost 5 years old and it's simply a better game all-around, and it's more polished! Sorry Tony, I've been a fan of your's for years but this was a total "Swing and a Miss". 'Nuff said!
