    The Darkest of Times stark and sobering reminder of how lucky we are, and what sacrifices were made for the greater good. As basic as you can get for a strategy game but it’s all the better for it.

    Through the Darkest of Times is a strategy game made by a small German studio where you play as a resistance group during the rise of Nazism.Through the Darkest of Times is a strategy game made by a small German studio where you play as a resistance group during the rise of Nazism.
    The team paints a grim picture of hopelessness and struggle during that time through both narrative and game mechanics. Even small tasks are difficult and frightening to accomplish. The story gives a historical view of what it might have felt like to live in Berlin at the time and see the majority of your fellow Germans fall in line with the madness of Hitler. Interestingly, the game randomly generates your character's race and political background at the beginning, which changes how some characters will interact with you through the game - leading to some surprises if you play through more than once.
    I played on PS4 and did not encounter any bugs. The minimalist art and music works well for the theme. The text and icons can be a bit small playing on a television and controlling menus with a controller can feel a bit clunky - I suspect it might be better played on a PC - but those issues didn't get in the way of an experience that felt important and sticks in my mind.
