This War of Mine: The Little Ones is an extremely difficult survival game. Though the game adds more realism that a lot of survival games avoid, the lack of an actual story to back up the realism, and the almost unfair gameplay makes this title a little too cumbersome.

I really like the concept of this game. love the survival resource managment, it's got an interesting back story, and it's pretty addicting. BUT FOR **** SAKE, the controls are driving me insane. i will literally be holding my joy stick to the left and down, but for some reason im going up.

Great game ruined by just ....horrible controls.

Scenarios involve different starting characters most have a handy trait, some just feel like an extra mouth to feed, the scenario seem to last around 22 days or about 45 days (at least the ones I've tried) problem is with a 45 day scenario, it takes 20 days or less to be completely organised with crafting and supplies, so the last 20 or so days is just waiting for the game to end.
Overall, I enjoyed the game a lot until I completed my first scenario, after that I have played a couple more scenarios, but I have found them to be pretty easy and a little tedious. for 7 dollars I am not dissapointed, I got 2 days of fun from the game. The game is good, but doesn't take long to get bored with it.

The game is good, but the combat controls are really bad. I would like to give it a better score, but the combat controls just don't let me do that.

This game kinda took me by surprise. To be honest I have never heard of it until it showed itself on Playstation Plus free games. After reading the overview I thought it sounded like a pretty cool idea. Anyway I started it and I gotta say it is not bad at all. To be honest I have never heard of it until it showed itself on Playstation Plus free games. After reading the overview I thought it sounded like a pretty cool idea. Anyway I started it and I gotta say it is not bad at all. I read some of the other user reviews and noticed a lot of people saying that Deep Silver pretty much ported a broken version from pc to consoles but they must have patched it because I had zero problems so far and I have at least ten hours invested into the game. Without giving to much away you and up to 4 others are stuck in a city ravaged by civil war. Your mission is to survive until a cease fire happens. This could be anywhere from 20 to 45 (I think it's 45) days. During the day you have the chance to build up the home you are staying in by crafting and upgrading different workstations like the metal workstaion (making weapons, shovels, lock picks, hatchets etc.) herbal workstations to make medicines, and a few others. As I said during the day you will be building, but when night comes you decide who goes to scavenge, who guards the house, and who gets to sleep that night. Whoever you choose to scavenge must prepare first by taking along things to help like shovels to clean debri, lock picks to open locked doors, or a gun to protect yourself. The catch is you will have very limited inventory space, so whatever you bring with you will take away one inventory slot for supplies scavenged. You could find other people along the way willing to trade, or raiders just looking to kill you to take your stuff. Once you have collected everything you can, you can return to the house. Make sure you don't wait too long because if you do, you end up staying out when the sun comes up at which point you no longer have cover of night, and makes it much harder for your scavenger to return. Once they do return you will see a "While you were gone" prompt. This tells you what has happened while you were out scavenging. It could be a calm and peaceful night, or a tumultuous one. Raiders could have attacked, a fight could have broke out between your house mates, or maybe someone became ill. All are reasons to try and find plenty of food and medicine first and foremost. Definitely try this one out, especially now that it is free on ps plus. If you managed to miss the free version I would say that I wouldn't pay anything over 20 bucks for it. Expand

Very fun, takes sometime to get used to, but it works great. The game gets kinda repetitive after a while, and it is pretty hard to make everyone survive. It is kinda like fallout shelter in a way.

There isn't much out there like this, the developers should be applauded for tackling such a difficult topic, but the basic mechanics slowly detract from the emotive messages the game projects. On the plus side as I said, the game has a huge replay value, with various scenarios ready from start and the ability to create your own scenario and change a lot of the variables so that each experience feels unique. The second is that it can be addicting because of the way the mechanics are handled and the urgency you feel of making your survivors last, it almost feels like the "one more turn" mentality on Civ games (not as addicting, but similar). Also, on the plus sides the style of the game is actually very fitting for the topic, and it really takes you into the situation of a war. Another plus side is the amount of paths and strategies you can work which again, lets you make each play through unique. Now on the bad side, unfortunately, while there are a lot of characters, not many of the abilities are actually that useful and you kind of start to just gravitate to the ones that are more obvious for a good play through. Also the combat, while a glad addition to some scenarios is a little choppy and can be confusing a least the first few times which can end in your characters dead. And another aspect, the random events, that while interesting the first few times, can become very repetitive after a while and you kind of start predicting them. In conclusion, This war of mine is a good game that lets you feel the atmosphere and the scale of a war that you can't change nor affect, and gives you a sense of urgency to try to last without losing your characters, but it is slightly pushed down by some limited design choices, not well-balanced characters, slightly annoying mechanics, and limited dialogues. All in all, I have to say I did enjoy the game and would recommend to strategy or survival games or if you can have at a low price as an interesting option, but be warned, it can be difficult and can annoy you if it's not your style. It's an OK game with an original approach on war and its consequences. A playthrough will take you between 8 and 10 hours but there's definitely some replayability for those who really enjoy the game. As for me, I desinstalled the game after my third - but first successful - campaign with the feeling I had seen almost all the game mechanics. (I may be wrong though...maybe there's some hidden depth somewhere) It's not hard per se but there's only one save file and the game saves automatically after each day. Here, rage exiting the game after an injust death due to clumsy controls (and never your bad decision) is actually rewarded... which is a shame as it takes away the stress when you're scavenging in risky areas.

A solid 6. Worth your money if you're a curious gamer.

Controls could’ve been tighter, given the high-stakes nature of things. Otherwise, this randomising, very replayable experience is hard to put down. [April 2016, p78]

Despite a few little things that we'd change, this is an interesting and, at times, thought-provoking experience that deserves to be exposed to a wider audience on PS4. [Issue#267, p.66]
