The game’s dedication to conveying noteworthy and interesting information about Zodiac is commendable, though if you read every single thing you find, you’ll easily spend more than half of your playthrough just reading collectibles. Far too much information is isolated to the semi-functional menus, which in many cases don’t scroll properly or don’t bring up the correct information. Functionality in general is an issue, and it interferes with some of the game’s best features. The dream environments have a fantastic mood to them, between lots of fog, and low, rumbling musical cues. But the filters have a tendency to break, and the only discernible way to fix it is to fumble into walls until Zodiac catches you and you restart. And that’s to say nothing of the insane amount of screen-tearing that happens on nearly every texture for every frame, which the developer promises will be getting a fix in the near future. Ultimately the game feels like the first draft of a really great idea. Add some polish, and we’d love to see what it could become.

If there’s one positive about this game, it’s the puzzles. While they’re not on the caliber of, say, AI: The Somnium Files (which has a vaguely similar premise) or the Zero Escape series, some of the puzzles are interesting, if relatively easy. None of them gave me any trouble outside of finding the right item elsewhere in the level or avoiding getting killed in the meantime, but they offered a brief moment where I could pretend that they’d put that modicum of effort into the other aspects of game design. If you absolutely have to pick up this game, do yourself a favor and play Detective mode. You’ll get through it three times as fast and can move onto something worth your time.

What’s frustrating is that this game could have been really good. Setting aside the freaky true crime aspect of it all, the game creates a deeply unsettling atmosphere, as if you’re walking through a nightmare with a mysterious, unstoppable killer lurking somewhere in the shadows. If that doesn’t frighten you a little, I don’t know what will. But again, none of that matters all that much, since the game here is a buggy mess. Whatever creepiness or unsettling story This is the Zodiac Speaking is trying to convey doesn’t really matter all that much, not when the game is literally falling apart before your very eyes.

I was sceptical about this when I watched the trailer, but as a fan of the Zodiac story, I purchased it during a sale. This is a really buggy game which never really gets going. The graphics are meant to be stylish and retro, but they just look poor and unfinished. The voice acting is bad too. There much bensome serious glitches as one of thentrophies seems unobtainable. There are some aspects of the story which briefly hold your attention, but this game is so flawed it's hard to be invested. A shame. Expand

Graphics are terrible. Music is fine at first but never matches the tone of the game, either by design or glitch youl listen to the same music track for an hour even though you hit 3 different scenes.. Game bugged out for me in chapter 2. After solving a puzzle by putting chronological events in order you are unable to move and cannot access menu. You have to wait for Zodiac to catch you. Voice acting is fine but sometimes mixed terribly, mostly too loud Expand
