Right out of the gate I thought the graphics were great for a game that released a few years ago, and the sounds design was excellent, however, I struggled... and I struggled mightily. I could not seem to track animals very well, I was discouraged easily after tracking and not actually gaining a kill, and when I did hunt an animal it was not simple. I thought the game was just crappy, but then I realized, maybe I just sucked.

After a couple days away from the game I decided to go back and start over. This time I took my time, and yes, certain playthroughs saw me never hunt a single animal, in about an hour of playing at my leisure, but I began to understand that is what added to the immersion of this game. You don't always go out hunting for a day or two and actually tag any game. Even spotting a nice trophy animal and not actually getting in close enough to get a shot away and then losing it for the rest of the playthrough, although a pain in the ass, still was just something that made the game feel more realistic. I have improved in this game a lot since my first few weeks with it and it's still on my PS4 dashboard ready to be played anytime I feel like sitting back and taking in some amazing wilderness scenery within a game and hopefully finding that beautiful Gold or even Diamond trophy animal.

This is by far the most realistic hunting game I have ever played.

At first glance the graphics are nice and the environmental sounds are immersive but the gameplay design choices for this game are horrible. You start off with a garbage character with useless equipment. The XP system in this game really bogs down the experience. You have to level up your character to unlock new equipment even if you have the money to buy it. So you might want to go out and hunt some bears but that gun and callers that you want are locked until you level up. You also unlock perks like being able to walk more quietly, steady aim, getting more information about an animal from its footprints, being harder to detect in rain and foggy weather, being able to pin point footsteps more accurately and so on. This basically means that when you start the game, your character is useless until you level up which makes this game difficult and frustrating to play. The game only gives you information about how old poo is but not about the footsteps. So you never have a clear idea of how far away the animal is from you based on the footsteps. Prepare to crouch and crawl while tracking because if you make too much noise, you'll scare the animals away.

The maps are huge but they feel too big because of how **** it is to find animals in this game. They aren't just randomly scattered around the map. You might head out to that lake or the river or just head out into the forest and you can walk and walk and walk and you won't find a single footprint or hear a call from an animal. Some of the areas just feel empty. So some parts of the map just feel useless. You'll want to find the higher difficulty level animals which are mostly males but feel so rare to find in this game. I mostly found trivial female animals that give about 150XP and this sucked hard because finding a track and following it to find the animal can take up to 20min.

You can't just go where you want because most of the time there aren't any animals and it feels that the game is playing you. This game just feels like a total slog to play and really lacks any feeling of freedom. Probably the best way to play this game is doing boring missions and waiting around need zones until the animals arrive. You can't just head out your own way and find something worth shooting.

When starting a map, you have to head out to the lookout points to survey the land to find the outpost that you have to go to and unlock as a fast travel point. This sucks hard because this is supposed to be a hunting game and instead you'll be driving around. I don't understand why fast travel outposts aren't available from the get go? You can travel around with a tent, pitch it and use it as a fast travel point. This is probably the best way to play the game because you can just fast travel back to an outpost, load up on ammo or buy better gear then fast travel back to where you left off. The thing is when you pitch a tent it scares the animals away.

You have tree stands and tree tripods and these suck because they also scare animals away. You can't lure animals in your direction then place a tree stand above you, climb up and wait for the animals to show up because they get scared away.

The animal animations are lame. They don't show any weight in their movements. When you shoot they seem to just randomly run around in a circle then run in a random direction. They react to your smell and react to you when they get too close. They make warning and mating sounds which gives you an indicator of about where they are. Of course you can put points in a perk that make the sound indicators from the animals more accurate. But until then, it's vague.

Overall I got sick and tired of shooting trivial female animals and finding anything better, well, the payoff wasn't worth the time. It's a real shame. This game has great hunting and shooting mechanics, the maps look great but the gameplay design just makes this tough and disappointing to play. It's a total slog to play. If it had more animals scattered around all over the map then this game would be fantastic. It'd feel great to just head out to the lake or to the open fields and be able to find something there. But this game just feels like a huge walkathon.

Playing the Hunter Call of the wild has taught me many things over the weekend. The main thing is that I have no problems whatsoever mowing down humans one after another, in a game world of course but the guilt I felt after shooting a rabbit while it was playing with others left me repeating, "It's only a game, It's only a game" as I looked down at the said bunny!

I'm not a hunter but I've been curious about these games from the PlayStation 2 days. Sure you can get them easily now with multi region and access to the other stores but they are mainly sold over the water. I'd seen the screens and previews before but you can easily be fooled by pre-launch hype shots and tarted up movies. When I first spawned into the game world I completely missed what the narrator was saying to me and I had to start again. You see I was distracted by what was before me.
This distraction has not stopped hours and hours into the game. The world you are dropped into is the most gorgeous, beautiful, HUGE open world I've ever seen. Yes I know, even more so than Horizon Zero Dawn my favourite PS4 game. PlayStation 4 has a new benchmark, it's Call of the Wild!

I honestly can't tell you how good this game looks on my 4K TV. No screens nor youtube movies can prepare you for 50" 4K greatness. Trees blow in the wind, particles of even dust blow through the air, seed clocks glide past you realistically as they would on a hot summers day, leaves, it's just brilliant. Water reflects the trees, sun, moon at night and anything that passes or overhead clouds passing or even building to let rip an almighty storm. My wife has zero interest in games, she walked into the front room and said, "wow, is this a game?" I think I've spent more time wandering than anything else. It's vista is second to none. "Is that a bridge over there? half an hour later you've walked to it and forgotten what your task was. On the way you've stopped to take yet another screen shot of the beautiful landscape.

On top of the visuals is the sound. What transforms this real would into real life is the use of sound. I have lost count of the amount of times I've been strolling about and a bark of a deer has made me jump. Birds tweet, wind rustles the leaves and bushes. Water laps at the edges of lakes and the pitter patter of water bouncing off muddy paths all adds to sucking you in to this living, breathing world. I'm playing with surround on and a wireless base speaker. Starting up the ATV just has to be heard with 5.1. The gunshot itself rings out around the room and during a hunt when silence is golden, pulling your own trigger can really startle you. Sound in key to the game too. You listen intensely for the direction of a mating call or growl from a bear. Once I lay in fear as I'd lost my way lying down and a bear walked past me, I was holding my breath for gods sake. Like I say, this game really does immerse you like I've never had before.

So this takes me to the game itself. All the looks and sound mean jack if the game sucks right?
I've never played anything like this before. I guess the closest I've got is Call Of Duty MW. The sniping mission in Russia. That was scripted, the Hunter is not. In fact every time I've turned it on, saying that it's hardly been off in the last two days, you could go off hunting and every time it's different. What is brilliant is the way the developer has tried to make it interesting by giving it a kind of story mode to keep you interested and this works so well. You receive calls on your mobile asking you to help out or visit certain parts of the map. When you bring up the map and pan back with the right stick you'll be amazed. The map is huge. I started in the US but to my shock there is also a European map with a female narrator. You get a ATV that has brilliant physics to get you about quicker. You even get a tent to pitch for over night stays in the wild. Mission structure is perfect and the game gets a little bit easier as you unlock better guns, bullets and bows. Everything is put together so well. It's worth pointing out that rifles have certain bullets and this led me to a search on the net to see why my gun wouldn't load. I was not alone as I found many people with the same problem as me. That is the only thing that needs to be made clearer to people like me who've not played a game like this before.

The Hunt itself can be done at any time, anywhere. Hunting is tense and time consuming. As it should be. I found myself hunting down a pack of deer taking over 40 minutes as I crept, crawled and then executed the kill perfectly. It was night and I took out 4 deer in one go as they panicked not knowing where I was. I hunted a bear but just scrapped it. I then followed the trail until I found it and took the reward. I'm no hunter in real life but it turns out I'm quite good.
Multiplayer can team up to 8 players with some co-op or challenges.
As open worlds go this is the new benchmark for me.

Terrible UI design that is so clunky it feels like it was made in the late 90s.
Awful progression system that locks guns so that even if you earn the in-game cash to purchase them: you still need to level up that weapon skill first. So if you want a new rifle: go hunt a couple dozen or more animals with the rifle you have unlocked first. You know how they always ask to see your Hunter Card when you go to purchase a new hunting rifle at the shop IRL? Yeah me either... cause they DON'T DO THAT. It is ABSURD. Can you imagine the clerk telling you "Oh sorry sir, you don't have the Rifle score for this .45-70. Can I interest you in this nice .223 instead?" ... seriously?!?!?! I did manage to unlock all the rifles in my 100+ hours, but didn't earn any xp for my Shotguns, Pistols, or Bows. The only reason I can think of for this is to arbitrarily draw out the progression so that it takes you longer. In the end I realized I would play for hundreds of hours (literally) before I got to the point where I could just "go on a hunt". Not go out to level up so I could purchase equipment that I wanted to use, or hunt something specific (possibly with a specific gun, in a specific area), or "discover"/unlock all the outposts and viewpoints... I am tired of doing all that. I just wanted to go hunt, the way I wanted to do it.
Clearly they are enthusiastic about making an "immersive environment", but they don't know how to make "a fun game". There will be many times where the game has given you absolutely zero indication that there is an animal near you. Then you will suddenly hear it flee, while you are sitting still crouched in a bush 10 meters away. Since there was no visual indication, and it made no sound (even though it was clearly moving through the forest), so there was ZERO chance for me to detect it since it was off screen. Turn to the right slowly... then it sees you just as you see it and it is gone just as you realize you just missed an opportunity. BAD GAME DESIGN.
Playing a mission to hunt a Moose? You'll spot a dozen Coyote around. On a mission for a Coyote? You will go to their need zones and never see one. They are everywhere... until you are on a mission for one. Same with every animal except the unique mission-only animals. You can find them all over, until you need to.
I wanted to love this game. I tried to for 100+ hours playing it. I just don't because they make bad design choices at almost every turn.
If you can get past the many, *many*, faults: this can be enjoyable. Also you can't just "start playing and hunt". In this "game" (under the lazy excuse of what they deem to be "immersion") you will wander for a good while before getting to "do anything". Sometimes I play for 2-3 hours and never even spot an animal once. They consider that "immersion", but I just consider that a waste of my time. Games usually try to be respectful of a player's time, being understanding that most people can't sit down and play a game for 4 hours straight. Most games understand not everyone has perfect hearing, or perfect vision: so they offer aids to the player to help with this, where CotW just leaves you in the dark... again in the name of "immersion". So if you have a life outside of gaming, and only game for 2-3 hours at a time: I also do not suggest this game.
TL;DR - Don't waste your money on this bug-ridden, progression dragging, underdeveloped game. They aren't going to fix it. They are just going to put out new DLC that will break it even further.

Anyone else that hunts whitetail, know that most hunters get excited about the racks on these deer (most any kind of deer in fact). In this game, there seem to be no non-typicals at all. In fact, almost every rack looks identical but just scaled up and down in size. What's even more sorry is that your buck isn't scored on it's rack. There are no G1, G2, etc. lengths or even any kind of spread or length measurements at all on the deer you kill. It seems that your score comes from how "rare" this particular deer is on some unknown scale and it's weight(which it does give in pounds). Sure, the more rare the deer is, the bigger it's rack tends to be, but there is no way of knowing any kind of measurements for each one. Even on the after kill menu, it doesn't even say how many points the rack is. It does have a picture you can look at, but I remember Cabelas Pro Hunts could at least manage to tell you how many points for each side of the rack, and that was PS3. So basically, if you are into Pope&Young/Boone&Crockett kind of scores, be prepared for a massive letdown. Seems to be the same for other game as well, for example, you aren't given the skull size for bears, no tusk measurement for boars, etc.

Now for realism, haha. I can shoot at a deer, miss, and call it right back within five minutes. I can kill a deer and the others will run off and then come right back and stand around if I just sit there. There are no tree stands that I can carry around and set up where I want. What takes the cake for me though, is the animal vocalizations. Apparently, all deer doe's mating call is a grunt. The vocaliztion for alert seems to be a grunt as well, and not a snort. Any hunter knows the clear difference between a grunt and a snort, and any real hunter knows that a doe doesn't grunt. I can't really talk about most of the other big game animals because where I live, pretty much all we have is deer and black bear. But as bad as the deer vocalizations are, I am highly suspect of the rest. I can't really understand how a development team could afford to make a game, but not even bother to hire an actual hunter to advise them on the realism of their game. I mean, I would be happy too if they would just fly me over and buy me lunch.

The tracking system is ok. You can turn off track indicators, which would make it really hard to find tracks, actually harder than seeing them in real life in my experience. Tracks feature scat, footprints, and disturbed vegetation. Like all other hunting games I've experienced, for some reason, no one seems too concerned with adding scrapes or hornings for deer. You know, two of the most important signs when looking for presence of bucks in an area. On a side note as well, why the heck can't anyone add a preferred food system where animals tend to congregate? Like maybe have acorn stands in fall and most of the deer would tend to congregate to.

Anyways, the end, if you want a hiking simulator, this is it. If you want a hunting simulator, look elsewhere. I do not know where though.

Exploration is one of the title's strongest aspects. On console, there are two hunting reserves. Both are a pleasure to explore and offer a variety of sights and points of interest.

The actual hunting gameplay is a bit of a mixed bag. Guns are relatively fun to use, and can be upgraded with a small selection of sights and ammunition. You'll earn money for each confirmed kill, gaining extra money for quick and clean kills based on shot placement and the stats of your weapons and ammunition. Use a gun too powerful, and you'll ruin the quality of your trophy.

Sound is an important gameplay mechanic. Moving slowly and avoiding the rustling of foliage and the crunch of your footing is critical to stalking your prey. Wind and scent must also be accounted for. You have a multitude of lures at your disposal. Unfortunately, the best strategy is usually to just spam the correct call until you attract something.

There are quite a few bugs, mainly pertaining to animal behavior. You'll see creatures getting stuck on rocks and trees extremely often. The animations of the animals leave something to be desired, as well. The roster of species available to hunt is a little thin.

Multiplayer is much appreciated, but lacking. You cannot discover points of interest when in another player's game. This essentially kills any hope of coop exploration.

TheHunter is a solid game, and the basic template it establishes is one that should be followed for all hunting games to come. Yet, this is a game lacking in polish. One is left thinking another studio, one with more resources, perhaps, could do this great idea justice.

There would be ZERO adrenaline rush if you saw a Trophy Buck every 10 minutes! One thing I will mention is that this seems to be the only game that starts off harder and gets easier. With games that have enemies that get progressively harder it makes sense to have a slowly increasing arsenal of guns and equipment. In this game however, the enemies are always the same difficulty. So by giving you the bare minimum at the beginning of the game, you are effectively playing the game at it's hardest at 1%. And as you progress and earn money to spend on equipment and weaponry the game gets easier and easier. Rifle Sway, Better Spotting, Less Noise etc. This is not a negative point anyway just something I found interesting. Expand

It’s a good game the requires a lot of patience and stealth. There’s a lot that needs improving and missing. You should be able to run faster and have a stamina skills point, the hunter should be able to swim as the game is supposed to be as realistic as possible, the quad smokes and blows up when in water, the quad has an eerie weird like echo sound effects when braking and driving, thereIt’s a good game the requires a lot of patience and stealth. It's a good hunting game.
The thing that I hate about it is the perk system and how slow it is in the beginning.

While it suffers from seriously botched progression and a smattering of poor design choices, theHunter: Call of the Wild consistently provides a deep and satisfying hunting experience. Not only is it a dramatic departure from the mindless schlock we've been conditioned to seeing; it brings hunting to a height of simulation and strategy that I've never seen before. The game holds a special reverence not just for hunting, but for the spirit of the outdoors in general, making it a relevant testament to our natural landscapes in the modern era. If you're going into theHunter expecting to navigate smooth menus and unlock things at a steady pace, you're in for disappointment. If you're looking for an immersive and dignified hunting experience, you'll be absolutely hooked for hours on end. Falling into both camps, I know that the latter sensation ultimately prevails over the former. I'll be playing this one for a long time going forward, and not just because it takes forever to get new gear.

A mixture of realistic hunting simulation and literal walking simulator with a fairly gentle introduction, The Hunter: Call of the Wild is certainly not a game for the impatient. It's beautiful vistas and sedate pace make it a very chilled out experience for the most part, full of relaxing exploration, but to engage in the hunt itself is a tremendously time-consuming act.
