Let me start by saying I understand why everyone enjoys this game so much, to where it got a "#4 Best PS4 Game of 2015". As someone who didn't play it in 2015, and played it for the first time in 2019, this review is through my eyes.

The story starts with a slow build and overstimulating tutorial which starts the trail on rocky footing. I learned most of my basics while in the middle of a forest between side-quests, which may be the best part of the game.

The characters are well designed and the world is well planned, it's just a shame the same isn't said for the basic mechanics of the game. The controls and character movement feels loose, travel and interaction with the world is unpolished at best, and combat is nearly a nightmare.

Perhaps i'm better off with 2015 goggles without current greats like "Spiderman" and "God of War" to compare it to, but maybe it's time for a sequel and tighten up the loose bolts on this nearly immersive game.

The combat was beyond clunky. Enemies were uninteresting and bland. The spells had no appeal or flash. The menus were combersome. The inventory was filled with way too many items that served no purpose until dozens of hours into the game. Repairing items was a frustrating nightmare. The "puzzles" were a lesson in boredom. Seriously using your witcher sense to find clues was such an abysmal waste of time. Swimming sections were nothing but frustration. The difficulty scaling was terrible, mid game fights were often very difficult then suddenly a breeze at end game. The lore felt to me like a game of thrones wannabe, that's just a personal gripe if you are into that sort of genre you'd enjoy it more. Overall a huge living world with endless side quests, hiding a boring repetitve fetch quest filled gameplay experience. Expand

The map is bad and not connected. The scenery is great at first but it's always the same. And it lacks rewarding by exploration.
The enemies are so clunky and bad designed as well, they don't feel very plausible. Even the magic is bad: the symbols are so similar with each other. They could at least make some different icons more related with the actual power.

Sure it's better than a great number of games. But a 10? Not a chance. If this was made by Bethesda, I'm sure the critics would be all negative over it.

I DO think they are too high but this is my honest opinion and thoughts on the Witcher 3. The Witcher 3 is a beautiful game... on PC. One thing I hated while playing this on PlayStation 4 is that they had dulled the graphics down to a point where there was no point in making it about the graphics but they still pushed it to a point where it struggles to run on average PS4s. The fact that the game was constantly dipping into the 20 FPS range was not good and made a mediocre game even worse. Let's see, the universe is all right. The story is absolutely dog **** and confusing but if you ignore it and look around at the universe then that's the enjoyable part. The story is just so bland there's no point in praising it. The story is just an excuse for the horrible gameplay. Go here because A said so. Well B isn't where A said he was better find him. Oh C told me B is over at D. Turns out B isn't at D better find B. That's the level of depth we're talking about here. The actual gameplay is super boring. It's slow, clunky, and a mixture of too easy and hard. I was able to beat a boss standing still with my thumb on one button but as soon as I see a level 1 dog I'm dead because it just runs by and attacks me similar to an AoE attack without slowing down. Geralt is too slow to do anything. Buy the game to say you played it but save the reciept. Expand

Exploration was killed thanks to the "?" landmarks on the map, the horse playability is **** awful and really bad to control; this game is also very bland from a technical perspective, there is a lot of glitches and bugs, to be fair this is kinda common on open world games, but some of them are just really annoying and one particulary almost made me stop from playing it. The story, at least for me, was pretty boring and forgetful, the quest to find Ciri gets annoying real quick, and the formula is just: watch some cutscene and dialogues, fight some enemies, find some stuff, fight more enemies... and so on, the choice system is not much o relevant, at least on main quest, since the only choices that really matters are the ones that happens at when you're almost finishing it. For the positive side, i really like the sidequests and there is a lot of items to collect and things to do even after you beat the game, but i lost my save file so in order to pick the items i have to play that game again, and this won't be happening, at leasy by now.
In conclusion i think that Witcher 3 has some great aspects, but it0 is incredible overhyped and i dont think it really deserves the praise.

I give it the 6/10 because I can appreciate how dense it is with lore and background. It's pretty cool that you could read some lore in one of the novels, and then find something about it in the games. There's a lot to chew on, and if your a fan of the books you'd probably love the opportunity to play as Geralt. I can appreciate that, but it just didn't justify the hype for me.

And to find him you gotta go find 5 of his **** girlfriends and talk to each and every one of them, each one more boring than the last.

This is how my experience with The Witcher 3 has been going so far. Its always throwing more fetch quests at you. Despite the interesting side quests and Witcher Contracts and an outstanding world, the game's pacing is all over the place, the combat is Ass Creed shallow, and the game has way too many technical issues on ps4 which are backed by extremely clunky controls and robotic animation during dialogue. I, personally, will never understand the fanfare behind this game and why its been praised to the heavens, bug I can see a good game in this
package which is why the rating is a 7. Play it if you're a fan of the books, or if you'rethe kind of player that can lose him/herself in a gorgeous open world like this one and doesn't feel bored after dozens of fetch quests in story missions, but don't go in there thinking you'll something incredible out of it. Maybe the next hours carry more interesting story beats, but I, personally, am not ready to sit through so much monotonous **** to find out.

When it comes to video games; if it isn’t fun for me, then I rate low every time. Because I’ve heard raving reviews from my friends, 5 is the absolute highest score I could give a game that bored me to death.

I downloaded this game the day it came out. I was excited seeing all the trailers, the buildup, the screenshots and the massive hype. I was looking forward to a fantasy laden game with deep exploration, big monsters to hack and slash, beautiful and engrossing environments and strong characters.

And what i got was a half baked, incomplete, raggedy mess!

The only thing this game does well are the characters and character development. Everything else is sub par.

The controls are horrid. Even after multiple updates fixing all sorts of bugs, CDPR are vehemently opposed to fix the clunky combat and control system. Controlling Geralt is like trying to control a lead balloon. In combat the camera never stays fixed so mobs just run past your HUD making you have to move your clunky camera to face them as they raggedly try to jump on you.

Sword movements don't have any feedback - it feels the same when slicing thin air or slicing an enemy - the timing of Geralt is not consistent - a quick attack feels slower or faster at every input, not to mention there is also a very noticeable input lag, especially when trying to dodge and roll.

The enemies movement is jagged and rough - so is Geralts. The concept of smooth combat is non-existent in this game. This not only applies to movement in combat but also exploration. It often takes multiple attempts for a input prompt to pop up while interacting with the world as your character is just a pixel of 2 off center. You have to press X multiple times in hope that you get the input as this is easier than trying to align Geralt properly.

The menu is horrendous. It seems CDPR did not have a UX designer on their team during development. Equipment items and toggling through you menu items is tedious, clunky and slow. Its not intuitive at all - i mean how come there is no quick toggle between your inventory items and equipped items? You have to scroll using the d-pad though all your inventory items for the cursor to move right and land on your equipped items - and did i mention that even moving the cursor has a input lag - i constantly found myself hitting the d-pad multiple times for the cursor to move 1 slot.

The world map is confusing and ragged - moving your marker from one place to another almost feels like scratching your nails on a chalkboard. It is so jittery and spotty. This is the map for god's sake - this is not in-game where you can expect frame rate drops in a game this vast, this is the god damn map screen. SMH

Which brings me to the "open world." Its more like open areas than open world and you cannot traverse from one area to the next without using the fast travel mechanic. So how is this a true open world? Its a segmented open world - i.e the area you are in is open to exploration within its confines, but if you want to leave that area to another part of the world, you must fast travel, which turns the screen into a loading screen until it plops you into the new area of the game.

Which also brings me to the sheer barren and lifelessness of the world you are in. Yes the open areas are vast but they are vast swaths of mostly wilderness foliage. The towns you come across are more or less all the same which gives you no incentive to actually want to go in a explore, unless its part of a quest.

Natural exploration is limited in this game. If you wandered around aimlessly you will see the same thing everywhere - same structures, same enemies, same types of people, etc. Its not fun, unless you are on a specific mission or side quest.

Now with that out of the way - this game has a few good things going for it.

The main draw would be the characters and their story-lines. They are interesting, intriguing and compels you to want to know more, hence you finish that specific mission or quest to see it through to the end in order to find out the fate and outcome of the people involved.

In some instances this aspect of game play can be quite deep and intricate. A lot of the characters are well acted and makes Geralt invest heavily in their missions - so you care about what happens to them and either want them dead or fight for their survival.

This aspect alone made me want to continue playing just to see what happens to certain characters and unfold the story - which is a good one mind you.

So i feel like this game is a great shame - a shame for what it could have been. It has a lot going for it but the execution is so poorly done its a chore to play. The sad thing is a lot of these aspects could have been easily fixed, i.e clunky movements, choppy menus etc by update patches but the developer i feel is too stubborn and is forcing us to play the game "their way."

With all the updates this game has received in the last 3 years, the one that is most complained about - the clunky movement and jagged combat mechanics have never been addressed and we will never truly know why that is.

Despite the whole 'graphic downgrade' some players have been miffed about, the visuals are still pretty good. What's unfortunate though is the actual game play. Story's still more or less engaging though.

    Pros:

    > The subject matter of the stories and quests are pretty gritty. Some are humorous - See: cheese mages, tyromancy - and it balances out the game. My friend didn't like this though so it may be a con for some if you dislike Fable-esque, cheesy humor.

    > Quests. Quests Everywhere.

    > Massive variation of items.(also a bit of a con, explained below...)

    > Extensive lore and 'collectables' for fellow hoarders.

    > I see a lot of negative reviews about Gwent, the card game within the game, but I think they're pretty fun? They also allow item hoarders to try and gather all of the cards. Art on the cards are gorgeous to boot.

    > Gives just enough good loot to keep things interesting.

    Cons:

    >Already seen this plenty but just to cover the bases - tiny, tiny tiny tiny font. It's still kind of hard to read even on a 74" flat screen, and the font's on maximum size! How many wolf's livers do I have? is that 80 or 50?

    > Massive variation of items....stuck in a clunky and disorganized user interface. It's listed chronologically rather than by type (i.e. herbs in one chunk, runes in another, etc.) so you need to do a lot of scrolling to look for things.

    > Don't expect Geralt to jump off a 4ft ledge and survive. You get used to it as you play but I died several times simply due to being pushed off small heights (most of which were less than his own stature!) by enemies at the very beginning of the game. It still happens sometimes but it becomes expected.

    > Movement mechanics of Geralt/Roach (his horse)/anything is very clunky. There's no precision whatsoever, so when you're trying to loot a tiny box for a quest...well, it gets tedious pretty quickly. Best not play this game after other titles that put a lot of effort into sprite movement (i.e. assassin's creed, Prototype, etc).

    > Map is a lie. You can only stray a certain distance away from the main trails and roads before you hit the end of the map and are redirected back to whence you came from. If you enjoy extreme open-world experiences like in Fall Out, Skyrim, or Just Cause, you might feel restricted.

    > Small deathtraps everywhere. There's little nooks in the map that get Geralt stuck ( in some cases attributed to poor sprite recognition?). There was one pit in the bogs near a quest route which was just deep enough for Geralt to not be able to jump out of, but shallow enough to have him violently twitch between a state of drowning in bog water and walking. It's not an obscure location in the map, either. Had to reload to a prior save to get out of that mess.

    > This is a neutral/con type of thing for me. Leveling up is very...very slow. Many main quests require hours of leveling up before you can even hope to beat the boss. It's nice to feel immersed in the world, but when in a more impatient mood, not being able to see the follow-up story for another few days actually pulls me out of the world.

There's more but I'm nearing the word count limit. I hope these things were at least somewhat insightful. Despite all the cons I've listed out though, it's not a bad game! I would wait until the price drops though if you're more of a casual gamer, or don't have any investments in the actual Witcher franchise.

I think it's a bit weird that there are different UIs for different consoles but you're not losing points for it. The crafting system is nice, I like it.

The one thing though... the one thing...

YOU CAN'T PAUSE DURING THE **** CUTSCENES? WHAT THE ABSOLUTE **** WHOEVER MADE THAT DECISION NEEDS TO GET ZIKA WHILE PREGNANT. GODDAMMIT WHAT THE ****!

    Otherwise it's a nice game

First I must say I had really high expectations for this one, maybe because the hype was huge, but well.. that's what CDPR wanted us to feel so I let myself go with it. Day 1 buy.
Graphics are very good, but not something we've never seen before.
Story and role-playing is amazing, the true value is here!! Soundtrack is not fascinating, sometimes it is even annoying, but don't mind this

Now what really prevents it from being a 9 or a 10 is..
The controls and mechanics... It feels like the we're back to gta 3 or something.
The movement is poorly calibrated for sensitivity (you can only change camera sensitivity, not movement). You find yourself constantly struggling not to hit random people. Taking stairs and ladders is one hell of a nightmare. Mounting the horse is hard as well, you have to aim at the horse, figure out how not to run into it, make a full stop and press X (X won't work if your'e moving. same applies when looting).
    Combat mechanics are less bad.
Fix this and you have GOTY.

    My issues:

-Combat is basically hopping around and then striking. The quen shield is sort of useful. None of the other spells really add anything exciting.

-Combat and movement in general are horribly clunky. It feels like swimming in molasses. I'm coming off playing Bloodborne, so I guess it's hard to have an experience as good as that game's dynamic fighting. Tracking enemies is stupidly hard as the lock on skips around.

-Along with movement, the mount and looting are are far more complicated than they should be. Overstepping things should be a game achievement.

-This is not an open world. It's like Dragon Age: Inquisition where they story pushes you from large zone to large zone.

    -The story? ZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

-Items? Jesus. How much crap do I need? Why do RPGs feel like loading me up like a pack horse equals awesomeness?

-Weapon durability. I have to repair my swords after every 5-6 encounters.

Basically, I do not get they hype.

Good game, but not without flaws and glitches. I'm not sure how to interpret the 10 out of 10 scores anymore. In my opinion, it should be preserved for the absolute best. I can understand, that many people got used to broken and bugged games so much, that they are willing to push out a 10 for a game, which has several problems in both technical and design.

I'm not going into what the Witcher 3 is about, or how you progress in the game. You can read 99% of the reviewers describing of what this game is.
Instead, I point out obvious and not so obvious issues.
Let's start with the menu system. While it's not the worst, neither great. For example, if you enter the inventory (key: i), it takes 2 steps to get out. The Witcher's inventory is also quite disorganized. Your weapons and armor plus potions are lumped into one screen, while other items you collect are under other tabs. Looking at the items you pick up, is confusing and that little yellow star indicating the newest item is barely visible or completely invisible if the item is yellow. Most of the time it's hard to make out what exactly I picked up, especially looking at the herbs and miscellaneous items, because the icon is small and after a few hours, your inventory fills up to a point, where you loose track of what you have or what you should do with.
Trying to pursue to make one specific sword, armor or potion could be frustrating and tedious, so best advice is to pick up everything. I mean everything, even a rotten piece of meat or a broken fishing rod. You are going to spend a good amount of time of picking up everything that is pickable. If you thought Dragon Age: I was bad with herb picking, you ain't seen nothing yet, until you play this game.
Actually the title should have been Witcher 3 : Public Waste Management.
Another issue has to be the money system. You are not going to have a lot of money throughout the game. You are going to spend it on repairing your sword and armor after every 10 enemy you fight. At boss fights, your equipment will brake and your potions will run out. Sound challenging - yes, but plan to visit a black smith in about every 20 minutes and spend enormous amount of money on repairs. You found a unique sword and armor? You may consider finding another one, instead of repairing it. Kinda makes the rune stones almost useless and equipment with sockets for them.
    Potions.Equipment
I have 2 different potions i can use during traveling or combat, but I can switch them out, if I access my inventory, which as I said, involves hopping through 3 different screens.
Why not just let me equip at least 10 of them? I got 10 numbered keys on my keyboard. Why the redundancy and the immersion braking by navigating through menus while in combat?
    Combat:
Maybe it's only me, but blocking is almost useless. Most people will not block, because it can cause plenty of damage anyway, or stagger. I mean my level 12 witcher staggers from a level 1 bandit. So why should I even bother blocking, if I can just roll around? So they made the blocking another useless function, and with it, the whole parrying and counter attack options as well. Now, my old and experienced witcher relies on rolling around the ground left and right and its sword skills consist just a little more than whirlwind cuts and then roll. Spin around again with the sword, roll away quick.
I'm not sure what happened, because blocking/parrying/countering worked quite well in Witcher 2. They just dumped the whole thing, or is it bugged?
I also noticed, that even if the enemy doesn't hit towards me, the hit still counts? For example, a wolf was biting towards me, so I side stepped. It bit into the air, but apparently I lost health, like it bit me directly.
So now, I don't side step. I only roll and stab. Stab, stab roll. Roll roll stab. Rinse and repeat, if I want to live and win.
    Bugged or a design feature?
    Bugs and glitches.
This may be temporary, but they still exist.
    1. On shores, if I get off the horse, sometimes Geralt starts swimming in an ankle deep water. Kinda funny, but if you got enemies around, you are dead.
    2. Re-loading a quick save can have various effects. For example, you can can't open the same chest or various items missing from the ground. You use your witcher senses, but the items that were highlighted before are gone. Or the chest won't highlight anymore.
Or you can't complete a mission, because the mission specific item is gone. I couldn't free a jailed person, because the key disappeared upon re-loading the game.
    3.
    Bugged, stucked animations, clipping issues.
There are certain lootable boxes, that can't be looted, because it's under other items and the "loot" text doesn't appear, no matter how you turn towards it.
Geralt puts away the sword if it fights an enemy, which can disappear and re-appear. Like a wraith or a ghost. This can be a pain in the butt, because that one second could cost your life.
I'm out of space, there are more

However, anyone thinking about buying this game I would simply suggest considering a few things.
I have found this game to have a really plodding pace. And it's been difficult to get over it. I would say so far my experience has been, travelling the world, talking to folks +++ (there's ALOT of talking!), looting items which there value and usefulness is not clearly explained. The menu system and crafting system are not clearly explained at all... I spend my time walking around, looking at stuff, trying to read books and notes (quest items) so as not to miss stuff.. But the thing is - this is 70% of my time spent with the Witcher 3. All this is then bookended with action about 30% of the time. Now the action is straight combat. There's no stealth, no bow and arrow, so no long range combat really. And it gets a little repetitive especially against humans. But the combat is good, but considering apart from talking a lot, and exploring, this is the only thing there is to do. However, the boss battles mostly are absolutely epic!

I'm just saying this for anyone who gets a bit inpatient with cutscenes and a lot of talking in games, I would be hesitant to recommend this game. And I've played the heck out of games like Skyrim. So I was ready for a lot of talking in this game but was not prepared for how much talking and the slow pace that cannot be deviated from. And dare I say, at risk of being fire bombed by fans, a good portion of the content isn't terribly interesting.

I'm simply saying this game often requires of you hours in a single sitting to get to something worthwhile. And in between there's alot of walking about and gassing to the locals and not doing much that's interesting.

The performance of this game is downright atrocious. There are many times where the game will drop sub-25 fps and stay there for prolonged periods. It makes the game look extremely choppy and can negatively affect combat sequences with multiple enemies on screen. Texture pop-in is also a very real issue.

Yes, we knew this console generation was underpowered when we went into it but there is simply no excuse for this kind of performance. Any game that regularly drops into the low 20 fps range and stays there for more than a second or two deserves scrutiny for poor optimization. The game is beautiful, yes, but this is a clear example of graphics being considered over stable gameplay.

I would LOVE nothing more than to sit behind this game for hours on end but the performance problems make this a game I can only play in short sessions. I find that most of the widespread high reviews tend to gloss over these issues. If you want to see them in action before buying the game yourself, look up the Digital Foundry side by side performance evaluations of the post-patch PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game. Then compare that to Digital Foundry's side by side evaluation of the game's performance on their budget PCs, downgrade not withstanding.

I'm hoping CDPR can further patch the performance issues. Until then I have to knock the game down significantly for having periods of time where the frame rate and pop in renders the game utterly unenjoyable. Story, design, graphics, sound and music: All 9's; Gameplay: 7 for repetition and bad inventory UI design, but performance gets a 2.

I've been playing the game for about 10-15 hours so far. I have never played the other Witcher games before this was my first. I started the game on what would appear is the hard setting (thought this would be fair considering I enjoy my souls games and like a challenge)

    Story: 7.5/10
It's hard to tell at this stage as I have only just scratched the surface but the main quest sort of has my attention, but I often find myself getting sidetracked by the secondary quests. There are a lot of different names, places, characters mentioned of which you have no clue how they tie in with each other or even their importance, which I suppose could be awesome, but I often atm feel like it's just information overload, and a bit unnecessary.

    Combat: 4/10
Ok this is one of my biggest gripes with this game, the combat in this game is tragic. Some of my fanboy friends have put it down to me playing on hard, whereas they breezed through the first boss fight playing on easy. You cannot restore your health through meditation (leaving the character stationary) on higher difficulties, so after battles I find myself having to grind enemies and wildlife to gain meat to heal myself. This I do not mind, but I normally get hurt in battles due to the clunky movement and getting stuck in scenery, poor sprite detection. Fights can be won by standing at a distance and firing numerous bolts (which you have unlimited of, followed by dirty tactics of charging up yours skills, use it, run around til it charges, repeat, again and again.) You can attack on your horse which is also kind of clunky as sometimes your weapon will go straight through an enemy, and you'll be hit by an attack that didn't connect. I feel battles would be ridiculously on a lower setting, and with the ability to change the difficulty at any point I really think this cheapens the games approach. Battles tend to feel more like a grind chore than a skill. I've been so annoyed with it that I considered stop playing it altogether, but I will persevere

    Graphics / Visuals: 9/10
Very impressive, although i'm not a graphics freak the visuals on this game are amazing the creatures and landscapes are beautiful to look at.

    Movement 7/10
I haven't come across boats yet so cannot comment on that, I have been using the horse, but I think in the early game your lack of control of the horse all depends on the type of gear you have for it, the steering isn't very fluent and I keep getting stuck on fences, and everything seems to feel like it has slight lag. I try to "loot" something next to a candle flame and I end up lighting the candle instead of picking the item I wanted up, too many buttons do the same thing and you end up having to attempt about 3-4 times to do something before it actually works. Try talking to a villager and you end up getting on your horse which is annoying, your character turns like a bus, and sometimes when you're running from a battle your character will turn and face the enemy automatically which stops you running which lets them gain ground on you, and kill you or taking out a lot of health leading back to the whole grind for meat cycle mentioned in combat.

    Characters/Creatures 9/10
I really like the amount of different types of creatures in this game and the attention to their weaknesses at certain times of the day and the tactics you'll have to use to defeat them. I still have to come across many but it looks like they've taken a lot of time to put the effort in there.
The characters and voice acting in this game is second to none I feel like everyone has an interesting tale to tell, and feel like every quest I begin can lead to something worthwhile. I do enjoy the exploring, but only wish I could loot a bit quicker.
I am very excited for the characters i'll meet along the way as again you can tell they've put alot of time and effort into this and it has paid off so far.

    Extras:

    Card Game 1/10
I think the card game is awful, i read the rules played my first game and won, it was terrible. Far more interesting things to do than this bag of s**t.

    Leveling up 8/10
Still a bit confused by it all atm, but looks like you can specify exactly how you want your character to be so you can build yourself the perfect class with mutagens, points bonuses, something about potions and crafting that I haven't even got around to yet.

    Verdict:
Seems like a very good game hampered down by the clunky movement and combat system. I'd say if that was improved this game would be a 8/9.5. I would recommend playing this on a harder difficulty as it seems far too easy on the lower difficulties. I feel like this game was made to cater for people who struggle with hard games, which has cheapened it slightly. Worth giving it a shot though.

The Witcher 3's subject matter, its almost defiant doubling down on its treatment of women as titillating props for Geralt and the player, even as it tries to flesh out more female leads, is its most disappointing aspect. This constant presence weighs down what would otherwise be an excellent bit of closure for Geralt's video game saga — which isn't helped by the control issues that often detract from sequences meant to break up open-world monotony.
