The best way to describe the Walking Dead Season One is as an elaborate choose your own adventure story. There is some action, though it's relatively simple to make it through. The power of the game lies in its narrative and the characters you spend your journey with. The story is powerful and gripping, with decent replay value for a story driven, fairly linear game with limited action.

The presentation for the game is decent. The graphics are cell shaded and look hand drawn, a style I enjoy myself but know some people do not . The character models don't quite move right, leaving you from ever being sucked into the game, but the graphics are not the point. The sound effects and voice acting are top notch. The cast does a great job from beginning to end with even the peripheral characters you run into doing an excellent job.

The gameplay is simplistic, but you get what you expect. The game centers around the choices you make and how they affect your character, Lee, and the group he is with. There isn't a lot of combat, and the game feel cumbersome when you move away from areas that aren't focused on conversation and choices. If you're looking for a game with solid gameplay you're probably better off just moving on.

As mentioned before the game's story is where it shines. To go into details would give spoilers, but the story is riveting and revolves around the choices you make. The characters are diverse and interesting. They make you want to care about what happens to them. For a story driven game there is decent replay value as I've made it through the game on three separate occasions without it feeling burdensome, but the game is short which helps it not feel drawn out.

The one real gripe I have with the game, aside from the clunky feel to the game when in "action" oriented sequences, is how most of the choices don't really matter. The second time I went through the game I intentionally tried to make different choices to see what happened, and to be totally honest the game forced me down the same path I had taken the first time a lot, taking away the illusion that my choices mattered. What was going to happen was going to happen, and knowing that took away my feeling of agency in the game.

The Walking Dead Season One is a solid, story driven game that will suck you in. If you've played the game before and feel the itch to play it again I would recommend renting the game due to its short length and relative ease. If you're looking to play it for the first time I would still recommend renting it, but if the only options are buy it or not play it it's worth buying at its lower than the average game price.

In terms of actual game play, there isnt much to do aside from some QTE and some puzzles which dont leave you to fustrated. This game is meant to be played for the story, and with just that they do an amazing job.

You will be left at times moved by what happens on the screen and when a game can do that you know the story is good. What is particularly interesting is how the makers were able to force you to make decisions which affect the story. In the heat of a QTE moment, you might say or do something that in hind sight you wouldnt want to do. But certain decisions have a timer and you have to react. After you finish an episode, your decisions are compared with the rest of the community to see where you stand. Its more of an FYI, but its interesting to see where you stand in comparison to other players on some tough calls you had to make.

Aside from a few minor minor technical issues (not so great animations, lacking of effects, and your character seemingly halting mid step when he its the edge of the camera) this is a great game. But remember your playing this for the story not for any actual gameplay. Its a pleasant break.

Engaging story .. Cell-shaded graphics got old before I started playing , but thats not really the developers fault ( too much dbz and borderlands ). Very linear game , shabby movement controls.
It's an okay inbetweener, but why this (kinda) game should ever get more than 7 , implying its a gaming experience worth while.. Is beyond me

This game is unlike any other you'll ever play (except maybe Season Two, that is); it felt like a "choose your own adventure" book come to life. You'll feel completely invested in the decisions you make and without a doubt you'll reflect back on them and endlessly debate whether or not it was the right choice at the time.

Telltale Games does an incredible job of thoroughly immersing you in the world they've created. You'll create a real connection to certain characters based on your own values and morals and these will impact the decisions you make. The pacing and game progression have been timed perfectly, the chapters never feel drawn out or rushed. And don't let the lack of mind-blowing graphics deter you from giving this a spin – it's a classic case of a good story and enthralling adventure trumping flashy visuals. For anyone who missed this game on the last generation of consoles this is a must-play.

Walking dead is a narrative driven adventure game that mainly consists of quicktime events that lead to decisions that alter the course of the story. The focus is choice and ability to make decisions quickly, and dealing with the consequences of each decision. It doesn't take long before you realize decisions matter and you must be fully invested and attentive during gameplay.

Decisions: This game throws a lot of difficult decisions at you, and you can only sit on your couch and be thankful that these are not real choices you have to make in life. However a decision made in episode 1 can effect something that happens in episode 4, so decisions have a lot of weight to them and feel very real. It makes for an edge of your seat experience that you need to fully invest in. The player has to pay attention to what is going on and understand the context of each situation. A wrong comment or suggestion can alter the group's perception of you and have consequences that are not entirely obvious, as if the NPC's have minds of their own. The ways the story can branch off displays great game design and programming. Everyone that plays this game will have a slightly different experience.

Killing Zombies: Killing zombies is not the focus of this game, but still looms as the consistent threat throughout the game which stays true to the television series. Most of the conflicts happen when coming across other humans. When put in situations where Zombies need to be dealt with, the controls are very simple. Either aim with the cursor and press A or repeatedly tap a button in situations where there is a test of might. Based on decisions made, these confrontations can vary. If I decide to look around and find a knife or handgun, then my next encounter will go smoother as opposed to not having anything at all. I made sure to scavenge every area I was in to avoid such situations.

    Cinematics

Acting: The voice acting is spectacular. Heavy emotions are in full force in this depressing apocalyptic world, and it comes through in dialogue. There are times when the writing feels a bit forced, but the voice acting covers it up. The expressions of the characters can be inconsistent. At some points It's very good and everything comes together beautifully. At other points, things feel very rushed and there seems to be a lack of attention to detail. This comes through sometimes when zombies are chasing the character and there is an expressionless look of fear that stays plastered on the player's face. It doesn't take away from the emotion felt during these situations though, but is still something that is noticeable.

Embedded Gameplay: You must pay attention during cinematics because it's apart of the game. Dialogue will suddenly stop and a timer will appear giving the player about 5 seconds to read all 4 available decisions that can be made, then the player must react by pushing the correct button. The short amount of time given to make the decisions keep the story moving at a correct and natural pace as natural dialogue would, adding realism and pressure to each situation. This is where the game thrives, it's a great mechanic and innovative way of integrating story telling and play into one. Games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age allow the player to make branching decisions, but can stop the game, think about it, then choose what I want to do. Walking Dead does not allow this, and incorporates your own psychology and behaviors into the game.

    Conclusion

Worth playing by anyone and everyone. This game is very accessible to people that are not hardcore gamers or gamers at all. Very simple controls and gameplay hinders on good decisions, not necessarily reactions with fingers. I will definitely pick up Season 2 and play other games by Tell Tale. However the experience is very intense and does not allow for side conversations with ACTUAL people. So I will have to pickup another Tell Tale game when my girlfriend is out of town or something.

Can't argue that the game itself is a brilliant story etc.

But its ludicrous that Telltale expect us to pay over the odds for the PS4 version, when there is little way in the way of improvements from the PS3 version. They didn't even have the decency to bundle both series together for a slightly cheaper price. My advice would be wait until its in a sale. Don't feed the Telltale rip

While the action sequences are more like QT events than anything else, they do involve positioning the cursor over a hot point, which I can't do fast enough since I invariably go the wrong way. And I don't want to try to rewire my brain for non-inverted Y because I fear that will ruin my reflexes in other games. Luckily, I can play the PC-version because I don't use inverted Y with that. So for me, the PC version is playable, console versions are not.

The game itself, like I said, is fairly enjoyable. Don't expect an action game though. It's mostly choose the conversation response you want (which might be on a fairly short timer, and if you don't choose, it continues on as if you made no choice most of the time), and click on the enemy (in time, otherwise you'll likely die and get sent back to a checkpoint). There's a few puzzles thrown in, but they seem to make good plot-sense rather than be Myst-like in nature.

The choices you make are not such a deciding factor in shaping the story as it might seem at first, it might change a dialog line here and there, but the overall path is pretty linear and set in stone beforehand no matter your choice. My fav characters were dying no matter what I did, the chars I didn't like were sticking with me till the end etc. I also cannot believe that they never included the inverted Y-Axis option, it's the only game I have played in years that didn't bother to include it, so they made the game very unpleasant to play for people like me who are used to inverted controls. Whoever is responsible for audio in this game should get fired right away, constant audio problems, audio balance issues, static noise, music cutting off etc. Even years after release they didn't patch these things. I'm also disappointed with 400 days DLC, the reason why I bought the complete series pack as I wanted the complete experience, but it hardly expanded anything on the original story, it's basically just another 5 short random stories. I'm still going to continue with season 2 as I enjoyed the story quite a bit, but I really hope devs learned something and won't repeat these same mistakes. 5/10 Expand

    - The story is just brilliant, and that's what made me finish the game. - Easy platinum trophy.
    - Nice decision making, and loved how the story changed with making certain decisions. The Bad:
    - Really clunky controls, especially when you are supposed to point and shoot many walkers at once. Bad controls design by the developers. - At times it just felt super slow, stupid and boring when you have to click around on completely stupid and redundant choices just for the sake of it. All of that could have been trimmed down. Or atleast let us skip the cut scene at times
    - Again no option for skipping a dialogue or cutscene when you died and had to replay the check point

I understand it's an old port, but regardless of all the quirks I mentioned above, I feel the overall experience I got from the game was worth the time and money spent on the game. Don't think I'll be replaying it though, but a great game for one play through.

really enjoyable likeable main characters, engaging fun story with hard to make decisions. But it is an interactive story so be aware next to zero gameplay and not very re-playable. 9/10 for what it is

I have played this game on the PS3 first. PS4 version looks much better but I was surprised to find the same bugs and glitches from the PS3 version in it.

Apart from that, The Walking Dead by Telltale Games is one of the best stories I have experienced in video games. I like the graphic design that reminds me of comics. Many of you might say that this game has bad graphics, even bad

L'histoire de ce premier épisode est intéressante, les personnages sont attachant mais le jeux pèche pas sa réalisation trop hasardeuse. Beaucoup de problèmes d'objet qui traverse les décors, …

Pretty nice story. We enjoyed watching an episode a night. Be mindful, the last episode is only 1 hour long, so do not leave for a separate day, rather finish it together with the 4th one.
And play 400 Days DLC on a separate day not to mix it with the main plot.

I've only just come across this game due to covid lockdown...I was impressed...especially considering its age! The graphics are great, keeping true to the original comic books. It's not so much a game as an interactive way to immerse you in a story, which it does really well. Movement of characters is showing its age now, but storyline and acting is still great. Recommended.

There are fewer performance problems, but this isn’t quite the overhaul that we were hoping for. That said, if you’re still yet to experience Lee and Clem’s escapade, this is the best version yet. And if you’re already familiar with Telltale Games’ post-apocalyptic journey, then ultimately you’ll have to decide whether it's worth the double dip.
