  • Summary: The Long Reach is set in New Hampshire, in the fictional town of Baervox. The game draws its inspiration from Lone Survivor and The Cave and all the classical adventures (except that The Long Reach is set in the present day).

    What The Long Reach may occasionally lack in originality, it more than makes up for in inventiveness, personality, and bubbling slow-burn horror chills. This is a well-written, atmospheric horror adventure, and it deserves your attention.

    Don't be deceived by first impressions, The Long Reach is a very mature and impressive adventure thanks to some powerful storytelling and some great story twists. The atmosphere makes this game a real joy to play. Even though some of the puzzles are a little bit far-fetched, it doesn't detract from the overall experience. Absolutely worth it.

    The Long Reach takes the horror genre and mixes it up with some classic point-and-click-like puzzles. This works quite well, although the illogical nature of these puzzles sometimes can ruin the horror mood.

Replay value and length is pretty low which is why I rated it down. If you like horror and pixel-art adventure style then you should grab it but please get it at a reasonable price.     I will not go deep into the story. It is not too much of a story anyways but it is okay-ish after all. The surrounding is pretty dark and promotes a horror styled feeling which is sublined by music accents and is very well done. Overall the atmosphere is dense and well made. It is a game that definitely aims for a mature audience. As I stated before, do not expect too much from the story. The game itself is pretty short and can be done in about 2-4hrs straight.

    The play style resembles mostly that of old point and click adventures. You go around collect stuff, combine it, use it and try to solve your way through the story. Controls are well made. When I think of it now it did not make a difference to the comfort of mouse/keyb versus the controller which I m really thankful for. You can die in this game, the automatically set save points are very fair though and you loose only seconds of gameplay. In total you do not approach much death threats and you do not have to fight but you have to dodge/stealth against them. I guess there are 3 occassions in total where this happens. So if you are afraid of dying, do not be!

    Tech wise there are no let downs. The game automatically saves at key points. It revives you automatically if you die a few seconds before it happened. I did not have any frame drops, as expected from "just" a pixel-art game. There are a few achievements to take. I did most of them in just experimenting on first play-through. To get them all not much of invest has to be done.

    Summary:
    I was positively surprised by this game. I like the combination of dark horror-ish pixel-art. I think the combination fits very well and the sounds are a great addition that create a dense atmosphere. The game is VERY short and you should not pay more then 5 to 10 for it because the replay value is pretty much zero. I still enjoyed it a lot and would grab it again for the 3.50 I had to pay for it.    … Expand
