The Last Remnant Remastered

A big improvement over the original due to all the bugs that were fixed.

The Last Remnant Remastered is not for the risk averse. It features a lot of design decisions, and punishes anyone who dares to ignore them. There's also a massive learning curve to account for, as the intricacies of battle will require serious effort to master. Even this critic, who has logged almost 200 hours between all three versions, still has a lot to learn. Regardless, the various gameplay systems are all satisfying to understand, and the results of a well built team that employs sound tactics are immeasurably fun to experience. What else is there to say about this game? It's a classic.

With improvements on both technical and gameplay aspects, The Last Remnant Remastered shines a new light on Square-Enix underappreciated jewel.

Born of experimentation and a combat system quite unlike anything else from its time, The Last Remnant Remastered takes all of the PC enhancements and balance changes that were never previously available on console and adds in a few graphical filters to appeal to another generation of console players.

It is fine as a simple game and the characters are lovely, but I know it has the potential to become even bigger. So much imagination was used to create such an epic story and to have named all the different characters, monsters, places, and remnants, and I believe a lot of these aspects could become sentimental pieces and not just names in a game. Overall, if you are looking for a fun, straightforward, and interesting JRPG with fun twists, The Last Remnant fits this description and is worth the play.

The Last Remnant has its inherent flaws. However, there is plenty there to engross any RPG player, old or new, who needs something else. The game offers little direction and limits itself narratively, but trial and error can help polish off the rough enough to see its glimmer

The Last Remnant has a less traditional approach to combat, having you command unions of allies to take down enemy forces with strategy, luck, and patience. Although its campaign lacks variety, the story, unique characters, and world will keep you intrigued.

It’s clear that it’s not a new game, but that it’s a remaster of a ten year old title, but nevertheless, it looks, sounds, and plays well. The more important question, as always, remains if the the story and gameplay are to your liking or not. To that end, I’m more on the reserved side of the equation, finding some value in both elements, but not enough to give this remaster a strong recommendation.

The Last Remnant isn’t the best RPG from the previous generations, but it is good and original indeed. The visual update also fixes some issues, and makes it look better than ever.

The game does something with its combat system that few had tried before or after, and it is a genuine joy once you’ve got the hang of it. When you strip away the below-average genre trappings, all that remains of The Last Remnant Remastered is a damn fine combat system that was clearly built before any other element of the game.

The Last Remnant Remastered is a lazy port with few adjustment. Too many game elements are the same as ten years ago, with poor attention to detail.

If you enjoyed The Last Remnant the first time around give this re-release a shot. And if you’re looking for an old-school deeply challenging JRPG, this title will also be for you.

The Last Remnant Remastered is the best available version of the JRPG by Square Enix. The graphics is improved, however remain the flaws of a game released 10 years ago, without enhancements in gameplay. It adds elements to the classic turn-based combat, sometimes chaotic but able to stand out.

I just can't get into the story here and the gameplay isn't exciting enough to hold my interest. I blame the dull characters and the repetitive hands-off approach to the battle system, respectively. There's a lot of individual things I like, but the game drops the ball on the most important parts of JRPG in my opinion, namely the story and the gameplay. I honestly can't recommend the game to anyone other than the most hardcore JRPG fanatics who are looking for their next fix. I suppose there is a reason it took ten years to get this game on PlayStation after all.

One of the biggest complaints about the original game had to do with issues regarding the graphics. The remastered version not only fixed those issues but makes this classic game look pretty good, much better than it did in 2009. However, it doesn't look quite as good as most games released in 2018, so a remaster can, apparently, only do so much.

For all it has to offer, The Last Remnant Remastered is still the same adventure longtime fans still know and love. Its visual upgrades and other changes make it the best version to play, but its lackluster plot and complex combat system might turn others away.

The real question is why Square Enix has felt the need to re-propose this game in 2018.
