I think the leaks and the immediate hate the game got made players play the game with a goal of killing Abby and not think about the story as a whole. The game makes me feel things a games never made me feel before. The way it plays with my emotions easily makes it my favorite game and by far a masterpiece in my books! Expand

They should’ve just left the first game alone and never did a sequel because this one just isn’t done right. It has really good graphics, but a story that butchers the 1st game’s story IMO.

The Last Of Us 2 es un juego increíble con una historia poderosísima, una variedad y caracterización de personajes impresionante, el único "fallo" que podría resaltar seria el extenso tiempo en el que estamos y jugamos con Abby en el cual nos hubiera gustado jugar partes con Ellie, como por ejemplo en el hospital luchar contra el Rey Rata entre otras...luego de eso, gráficos alucinantes e inimaginables a la altura de una generación posterior y un clásico probablemente indiscutible a pesar de su poco tiempo en mercado Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Why does this game even exist? It couldn't be more clear that Naughty Dog never intended a followup to the first game and had no plan whatsoever for continuing the plot.

The thing that actually makes Ellie important (her immunity...ya know, the entire driving force behind the first games plot) has no role to play in the sequel at all. Other than one or two off-hand references, it seems like the writers completely forgot that was even a thing. As a result, the game has no real plot progression at all. The world is the exact same at the end of the game as the begining. It's pointless.

This games plot is literally like watching one of those episodes of a TV show that have a throw away story to focus on the B tier characters.....except these are supposed to be our main characters.

I would say "at least its pretty," but Naughty Dogs gameplay is so laughably outdated and stale that you can hardly focus on the graphics through the shear tedium of it all.

Why would you drudge up a beloved IP, then have no clue where you are going with it? Is it really too much to ask for the writers to at least pretend they know what they are doing?

I'd give this a "0," but I am willing concede that the game does indeed start up when I select the icon.

The new mechanics and approaches to fighting, looting and simply exploring are outstanding, as you feel you have so much more freedom than before.
The graphics are simply out of this world, as you can feel not only the environment around, but you can feel you are in the environment. It was also a trademark of the first game, but in this one, with all the tech advances, you can say that there is almost none (if none actually) difference between a cutscene and the gameplay itself.
The plot itself is also incredible, teaching us life messages on and on. It makes us feel what the characters feel, seek what they seek more than anything, but gives us, as "the third person" in the story, the chance to see whats right and wrong, which culminates in the understanding of the game itself. It makes the player stick to the game in order to see what's next and as a groundbreaking and cinematic experience as it is, it's a roller coaster of feelings and emotions.
It is such an engaging experience that we can feel rage, hate, fear and happiness, all of that in one of the best, if not the best video game created until this date.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

The Last of Us Part 2 is the ultimate PlayStation 4 game. It is an incredible game in terms of both graphics quality, animation quality and game mechanics. the story and gameplay instead was extremely redundant, and tedious, also clunky.
Basically you go from open spaces fighting humans, you get forced by same pattern (falling floor, blocked path, fighting scene) to get indoor in dark close spooky place where you fight infected. and this repeat over and over again till the end.
the game totally lacks of character. everything is based on revenge. Cut scene are too long and kills the vibes of the game, the game overall is also too long. they force you play with abby half of the game to make you understand her point of view. but still the story struggle to keep you up.
Its clear that they lost the focu during the development, is basically an unfinished game with unclear identity and ideas.

Moreover, you are forced to do and see things that are incredibly gruesome, perverted, and violent. From the context of the game, it is clear that the writers considered these choices to be artistic and that they required the player to confront morally ambiguous situations.

The previously shallow combat system has a number of additions that make both fighting and stealth gameplay more satisfying and fun while traversing and exploring the world is more dynamic thanks to the introduction of physics-based puzzles and the ability to crouch and go prone. There is also the matter of accessibility options to consider, which allow players to customize their experience outside of a simple difficulty slider. Visual, auditory, and control customization makes the game easier for anyone to play. I had a blast playing the game and planning strategies for dealing with certain enemies.
That being said, this game is majorly hindered by its own story. It's a clunky, overly ambitious setup with shallow side characters and unsatisfying storylines that really make it a chore to play through, especially considering how many more cutscenes you have to sit through compared to the first game. Without spoiling any of the individual plot points, this game's story is a 180-degree turn from its predecessor, trading in an organic, beautifully developed relationship for a hodgepodge of flashbacks and inconsequential side missions that attempt to feed the players context in piecemeal doses while developing virtually none of its characters and giving the player very little reason to care for anyone, its protagonist included. Considering Neil Druckmann also wrote the beloved predecessor to this game, the sloppy pacing and static characters are astonishing if not outright offensive. While I expected to have some complicated feelings after its conclusion, I found myself mostly annoyed and frustrated at its lack of compelling motiviation or satisfying conclusions.
In short, I did have a fun time with this game in the thirty-some hours it took me to complete it. But around the halfway point, the story took a turn for the worse and I found myself annoyed at having to play through more of it just to finish the story. It left a bad taste in my mouth and for that reason, I have to rate it in the midrange because as technically impressive as it is, it's hard to enjoy a story-driven game with such messy writing.

I played the first game countless times. I prayed they would make a sequel and then waited patiently for years. The first game was such a perfect standalone experience that it didn't need another game, but it was so enjoyable and immersive that it left me wanting more. I wanted to experience more of these characters. Now that I got that wish, I wish I hadn't.

The characters just don't feel right, the gameplay doesn't feel as satisfying as the first, the story did not need to be told, in fact, I struggle to see what story they were even trying to tell. Obviously it's a tale about revenge, but there are so many questionable and down right dumb or boring events that happened that it made me scoff at my screen a few times saying REALLY?

The graphics are the only thing that truly felt "Naughy Dog Quality." It truly is the most beautiful looking game I've ever played, but that just doesn't carry it. It drags on waaaaaay past it's welcome in terms on length as well with me just wanting it to end after 15 hours or so.

All in all, I hope they never end up making a third game. I can't believe I feel that way after how obsessed I was with the first. There just isn't much they could do to make me care about this franchise after this one.

Maybe I'm being harsh because of how much I loved the first game, but I'm being honest. The taste has been soured for me.

I loved the game, but the remaining half of the game (abby) seemed so boring, the death of joel does not match his character at all, many times the "deep" parts tend to seem forced and the narrative of the game is directly bad .

People got mad for Joel’s death and then hated the game for what happened,o think Naughty Dog demonstrate amazingly well how the apocalipse should be,never a happy ending, always a consequence, what Joel did for Ellie may be beautiful for we(despite for the fact that he doomed the world) but for the others was despair, a nice way to think about it is to imagine that The last of us part I was entirely about Abby, and then the bad guy(Joel) killed you father,to me the protagonist is Owen who shows us that perspective of how everyone is good on their point of view, and in this mad, destroyed world, theres nothing left to us besides death. The only party that I desliked about the game was Ellie failing on killing Abby, first of all because she bad nightmares for years about that and then when she has the chance she stops it because of a flashback(?),wasnt the flashbacks that made her seek revenge?and second of all, wasnt the hole point of the game about consequences of our actions?I understood completely Abbys side but she shouldve died, then it would be an amazing sequel if Levi chased after Ellie for revenge, but maybe then he gives her mercy, then ending the “cycle of hatred”. As for the narrative is a 5 at most, the rhythm is cut every 5 hours of play, NO ONE can empathize with ABBY, who has no other function than to kill Joel and repel Ellie's attacks ... They also destroy one of the most endearing characters (Ellie) leaving her alone (her greatest fear) and without 2 fingers, she cannot even play the guitar that was her escape route ... (No spoilers) This was one of the best games I have ever played. I went into this very skeptical because of all the negative reviews I read, but I quickly realized they were incorrect as it unfolded.

I believe a lot of the negativity is because of a new character that is introduced in this game. She is seen as morally evil by many, and people hate her for something that she did without looking at it from her perspective. If you put yourself in her shoes and imagine her actions from her point of view, she's actually more justified in her actions than the beloved main character (who does much worse things).

I also believe many people don't like this character because she has a stronger and more masculine build, which unfortunately is unliked by many gamers who want petite and therefore "more pretty" women. Many have shamed her body type and even went so far as to send threats to her voice actress. Clearly, there are deeper issues than gameplay behind the bad reviews.

Continuing on, the game shows the player that blind rage and seeking revenge is not the right solution to every problem, as it will often lead you nowhere. Many people missed the moral behind the game, however, saying that trying to get vengeance keeps leaving you with nothing. That's the point. The developers want the player to feel that way, many just didn't like how it felt. Looking deeper than the surface is important for the enjoyment of this game, and I am surprised by how many people can't seem to figure it out.

This game was spectacular. I hope the negative reviews do not drive you away. Even if you think you won't like it, give it a chance. Worst you can do is just put down the controller.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is my first time ever reviewing a videogame, so don't mind if I say something bad.
The Last of Us Part 2 is not bad gameplay but the worst story performance, I wish I was playing the Game of the year's videogame but turns out it's the depression of the year. A lot of political correctness and abuse of the LGBTQ, even I have to show the empathy to respect those bad people who killed the main character during the mid-game, makes me wanna throw up.

Let's talk about the gameplay experience: it's good as part 1 and crueler to the enemy and you may see a lot of insane dismemberment and head explosion if you headshot or blow them up. Interesting at exploring a half-open world map. There will be no supply shortage if you fully looted the map. And each enemy has their own name which is pretty cool, they will warn each other name if somebody gets killed. Then you need to know how to deal with those infected, if you've played part 1 before, it won't be too hard to fight them. And the last one is the workbench. they did pretty well on the animation of upgrading your weapon, I'll feel satisfied every time I upgrade my weapon.

And that's all for the good part of this game, now we get to the most disgusting part of this disaster: the Storytelling. I'll try not to spoil it as much as possible, but the most favorite character just gets killed at the very beginning of the game, just because of a speechless reason, doesn't mean we have to play the villain in the game, get to know hers background also know why she had to kill him only to show sympathy. I only want her dead for revenge, but the Naughty Dog shows me that's impossible, that makes me wanna just quit this game only for that.

Another reason that makes this game awful is the Character development. There's a lot of character in this game that you probably wouldn't get to know them better, then they'll die during the story, so what's the point of adding them into the story? making them suffer just to let the plot being extremely tense and exciting? I don't think that'll work. every time I'm seeing some unknown characters get shot or stabbed, I didn't even feel sad for them, because there's no point in mourning them if you never get to know who they are. Besides, I have to kill a pregnant woman in the game then I just felt guilty about it? To be honest, this is the first game that made me kill a pregnant woman, well then, there's any significance in adding a pregnant woman in the game for what? Woman empowerment? I mean this is not "Game of Thrones", and that's what Naughty Dog was doing. And they failed.

So is this game worth playing? for gameplay: Maybe, wait till is on sale. But experience the story: Not recommended, it leaves a big gap between part 1, I would not say is the sequel, that'll be ashamed for it. I've played part 1 remastered when I got my ps4 and is clearly a masterpiece, makes me feel like I'm watching a touching and a real tear-jerker movie. Then jump into part 2, a muppet show, which is watching people killing each other and having some elements of feminism. I was fully anticipating part 2 gets releases but after all of this happening, all the things I had were the memories for part 1.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

You either loved it, or hated it. The first hour of the game didn't feel like something i'd love. Lots of talk, and little to no action. I thought, if the rest of the game is like this then no thanks. But pretty soon you got into the familiar gameplay of part 1 which I loved. Switching to other playable characters was confusing and frustrating at first but later I grew more attached to the characters. The reason why I give this game a 10 is exactly because of the different way of playing the game by switching into the role of the 'enemy' and seeing that there is no such thing as a 'good guy / girl and bad guy / girl'. Being good or bad is all relative and the classic view portrayed in movies and games of 'good versus bad' is drawn to a more realistic level in this game. The story might not be as 'grand' as part 1 where your 'goal' was to save the world with a cure, but everything that happened made sense and felt natural to real life. And switching to the 'enemy' side story is a brilliant piece of art in my opinion as you get to see how things are from their point of view and how they see you as evil. Everyone is right and wrong at the same time. If you want a classic game where the 'hero' is immortal and always good and the enemies are always 'bad guys' and 'pure evil' and you don't want that view shattered, then this is not the game for you. But if you are open to the concept that this games tell more than the characters and are open to see the message that is told here about revenge, pretentiousness, assumptions and how nothing is what is seems, then this game will open a new world for you. I truly enjoyed this game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In short:
The gameplay is amazing. Graphics are insane.
The story is meh, Pacing is way off. We all know revenge is bad and takes you to a darker place. But the physical, emotional and general consequences lack for the Abby character.
Abby lacks a story arc and is a general bloodthirsty psycho, as evidenced by various cutscenes, and her gameplay (she does kill her friends with no remorse). She is as sellfish as they come. The writers try so hard to make you feel bad for her, but her characterization makes the opposite.

    I will give two examples:
Abby decides to torture Joel. After he saved her. Her friends are in on this, knowing full well he saved her.
Her words to Dina, as she knows that she is pregnant, while having a knife to her throat are "Good".
(And looking at Lev makes her stop? Give me a break!)

Her arc is a fetch quest, that is filler. Her arc does not make sense, why would a bloodthirsty psycho want to help two kids? Never explained.

In all honesty while Ellie doesn't become a better person, it is clear why most players sided with her and wanted her to succeed. Her character is written better.

Overall I wish this game had a multiple choice ending. Sparing Abby, Killing Abby or getting Killed by Abby. That would be realistic and far more consequential .

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TLOU2 is a near masterpiece but not perfect - technical aspects are a step up from the original, and the plot/story take some gutsy moves, which may or may not pay off (most did but some did not for me, which I explain below). This game requires a deeper study into its story and themes; "revenge bad" only scratches the surfaces of what the game is about.

Gameplay is largely the same as TLOU1 with some noticeable improvements; level design and environmental puzzles are far superior than TLOU1 (no more tedious ladder/pallet finding, or obvious waist-high crates for cover). Human AI is pretty good at the harder difficulty as they will flank you, call for assistance, and use stealth themselves. Infected are largely the same except that bloaters and stalkers are more aggressive (shamblers feel pretty much like bloaters from the first game). The semi-open world is clearly a 2nd iteration of Uncharted: Lost Legacy (the previous ND game to feature a semi-open world); it was definitely fun exploring it, but probably not worth doing it a 2nd time.

Overall I still think TLOU2 is worth a playthrough so that you can form your own opinions. It is quite difficult to critique the game having watched someone else playing it, or reading a plot summary etc. since there are so many details which are easy to miss, including many instances of foreshadowing. Out of 10, I'd probably rate it 7 or 8, definitely not a 0 or 10.

    ==SPOILERS BELOW==

First, it is worth briefly discussing Joel's death. Obviously we hated watching it, but it felt justified: Joel did a lot of shady things and it would eventually come back to bite him. Basically, this is TLOU, not Uncharted. Why would Joel give his name to a bunch of armed strangers? Well, blame Tommy, who revealed both their names to Abby. Obviously Joel is a changed person compared to the first game, but we still see his skepticism (e.g. he wanted to "ride out the storm and get out of your hair", then later asks "what are you all doing out this way?").

Second it is worth discussing Ellie's and Abby's sides and why we play half the game as Joel's killer. Abby's story is "one step ahead" of Ellie's; Ellie seeks a path of revenge, while Abby's story details the consequences of that revenge and how it didn't bring Abby closure (until encountering Yara & Lev). The reason we play as Abby is a bit more than the cliche "two sides of the same coin"; we are additionally asked to see the parallels between both stories and how they intersect each other. I actually dug Abby's story and even though Abby doesn't know Tommy/Ellie are hunting them down until day 3, it was fun to see Abby's side knowing that we already visited and interacted with the same people and locations playing as Ellie. One issue is that I couldn't really care much about Owen and Mel since we know they were killed at the end of day 3. Owen's conversation with Abby in the boat contained some nice foreshadowing regarding Lev but besides that I couldn't care much.

The Santa Barbara chapter annoyed me the most; gameplay-wise, it had the most ludonarrative dissonance, since Ellie is the most upgraded at this point (in terms of max health, weapons/upgrades), yet in the story she is weakened and had been impaled and hung by a Rattler trap. It would've been more interesting to play the Santa Barbara chapter with no weapons, reduced health, and forced to rely on stealth or the Rattlers' clicker hostages (which I didn't realize you could unbind them until my 2nd playthrough).
At this point, Ellie likely went to Santa Barbara not with the main intent of killing Abby, but escaping her months-long PTSD/nightmares and finding closure. Was leaving everything behind to travel 1000+ miles, again, except all alone really the best way to do that? However there's some interesting situational irony here: if Ellie did not go to SB, Abby and Lev would be dead, but Ellie ended up freeing them. Perhaps the game could have ended at the farmhouse with Ellie struggling to cope with PTSD but with Dina at her side, and Abby could have bitten off her fingers during the theater fight. Tommy then arrives with knowledge of Abby's whereabouts, we cut to Ellie contemplating this, and the game ends.

The ordering of flashbacks within the main storylines was interesting and I'm not sure if it paid off for me. Ellie's flashbacks (especially the museum) were brilliant and probably should've been placed at the very beginning (perhaps with the hotel as a tutorial level). The current order made me ask why Ellie would go lengths to exact revenge on a person she had cut ties with, which made it obvious (along with some Ellie/Dina dialogue at the beginning) that Ellie had at least begun to reconcile with Joel.

However there are so many story elements that worked: the portrayal of guilt, forgiveness, how thirst for revenge can destroy a person and their relationships. I think with some changes to the above issues it would have been a 10/10 for me.

Hello from Russia. I want to say thanks to the developers and, in particular, Neil Drukmann, for such a wonderful game. All my comrades have played it, and our opinion is sole. Don't listen to those who hate the game. There is indeed LGBT propaganda there, but it is insignificant. Feel free to play the game, I advise everyone.

Best Game of 2020 and 100% Success.
Huge Thank to the developers and project director for their efforts, hard work and professionalism.
I would like to see more and I'm looking forward to it. I'm sure there are millions ppl like me. PS - Regarding the negatives - these are mainly homophobic people from homophobic countries in my opinion so you shouldn't to objectively accept these

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I see most negative reviews here based on the fact that they got rid of the main character from the last game within the first 2 hours of this game and that he wasn’t playable. I feel last of us 2 has been on the receiving end of some unnecessary hate only for the story and doesn’t get enough credit for the other things that they did so well with this one. A game with such superior graphics and so many options weapons to choose from. You are emotionally invested in this game even more than the previous game. Yes, it absolutely sucks to play as the character that was responsible for the death of the main character of the prequel and many people including myself were so damn offended and disappointed at first, but then as the game progressed I was kinda fine with that too. This game also has some great boss fights and is still worth every penny you spend on it. It definitely isn’t even close to the prequel, but it also doesn’t deserve the unnecessary hate it gets. Aguardo a ciosamente a parte 3.

Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
