This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To be quite frank, this game hurt me. It left me emotionally scarred. Joel’s death was brutal and the fact that you controlled Abby right before that segment made the whope scene even more gruesome. I felt like i betrayed Joel. So i understood Ellie’s urge for vengence. I was ready to make Abby pay. I loved the romance between Ellie and Dina and how both really loved eachother. When the change happened and I had to play Abby I was at first furious, but after seeing her interact with her friends and with other people I realised that she’s alot like Joel and Ellie and it’s not uninamaginable that they could have bern friends if things were different. I believe that one of the most touching themes of the game is the dehumanization of the enemy. Abby isn’t looking at Joel as an individual, he’s just the **** that killed her father. Ellie is not seeing the persons she’s killing throughout the story as persons, merely as obstacles in her way to revange. I think it was genius for the creators to humanize Abby and to show that she’s a person who’s flawed, but also that can crack bad joke and that can have fun with the people that she loves. In most media she would be a moustache twirling villain. I understood why Abby wanted to torture and kill Joel, if someone killed your parent, you’ll most likely want to do the same thing. Thinking that this act of violence will solve anything is wrong. That’s way the heartbreak of Ellie leaving Dina and JJ to finally kill Abby is more impactfull. In this moment Abby is more in the right than Ellie. Abby spares Ellie’s live and Ellie has everything that she could ever dream for, but she just can’t let go of the hate. The dissapointment and sadness in Dina’s face when Ellie leaves is that same as ours. Dina and we don’t want to see Ellie leave and lose this life that she managed to get after all the loss that she has suffered. Ellie’s choice to go back after Abby is not supposed to make sense, it is something instinctual, no logic or reason can convince her to stop her crusade. The final fight between Ellie and Abby, after Ellie cuta her down the pole is very emotional. Seeing Abby caring for Lev as Joel cared for her humanizes Abby in Ellie’s eyes. Before the fight she thinks about letting them go, but her need to fight her, to have some kind of resolution is greater. Only when she is about to win and to accomplish everything she wanted, she realises that it was not worth it and that the Joel from Jackson, the calm parental figure that took her to museum on her birthday and that played gee-tar on the porch of his house would be okay with letting go of the hate. The final discussion between Ellie and Joel, in hindsight, gave Ellie some kind of relief, I believe she was able to forgive Joel for his actions because she saw what Abby and herself were capable of doing for the people that they loved, so now she understood his actions better. The empty house and Dina taking JJ and leaving is the price she has to pay for this lesson, although in my headcannon they worked things out and got back together. In conclusion, The Last of Us Part II is a difficult, brutal game, that is not afraid to make bold decision that may not please some fans. It is not the safe story that they could have told. It is not a perfect game, some people will hate it. The pacing of the game can be a little jarring, but i believe that it was necessary to simpatize and to humanize Abby, which was always to goal of the game, to create a character that appears evil and unredeemable, and show that from a different perspective heroes appear villains and villains appear heroes. As a game and as a piece of art this game made me feel emotions that i didn’t expect a game to be capable to convey, for this reason and for the gameplay, sound, visuals this game is 10/10 in my book. This game is an insult to the first. The story it's just terrible, all the characters are forgettable and boring. Only the graphics and actions are good. But if we want that we could play other games with great graphics and actions, but we play this game mostly for the story, and the story is garbage.

I couldn’t decide between a 4 or 5. I want to give a honest to God review. I had to sit back and look at how I felt. And I felt awful. If all of our favorite characters names changed, you wouldn’t even notice it was supposed to be Ellie or Joel. Everyone acted VERY out of character. And not the “oh she just grew up” way. I never felt a connection to the new characters as much as I did try. Naughty Dog made a character that was so obvious you were supposed to sympathize for. But it was so FORCED! Unlike the first one which was organic. In the first game, I didn’t even notice how attached to Joel I was until he he got severely hurt. I was surprised. I couldn’t get that spark back this time around. The story was highly disappointing and all over the place. This is just my personal opinion, but it was too long. I’m a slow gamer as it is, and this game took forever. You can tell there is a message being pushed. Whether or not you like the message I believe is a personal decision every individual has the right to make. And for those who do not like the message should not be condemned. Especially when it so upfront and obvious. On the positive side, like everyone clearly praises, it’s graphics are amazing. I was surprised I was playing a PS4 game. A lot of effort was put into graphics and it shows. Gameplay is familiar. Still good and easy to learn like the first one. And my oh my, can you customize the settings. That is nice for people who really like to control their game flow. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Only reason I'm giving this a three is because of how beautiful the game looks and the load of time put into creating this "masterpiece". The Last Of Us Part 2 compared to the first game is an absolute dumpster fire. The story was trash, forcing us to focus on new characters that we couldn't bother to give two **** about. Not only that, but it was really boring. I know everyone thinks people are joking when they say that they've fallen asleep while playing this game, but it's actually possible to do so. They disrespect such a beloved protagonist with a gruesome and unnecessary death, and then they make you play as that same character for ten hours. I get that the game is trying to make the character see the **** that Joel's actions put Abby through, but the game doesn't even offer a choice to kill or spare Abby. The one and only thing I enjoyed aside from the graphics was the phenomenal gameplay. Thanks, Neil Simp Druckmann, for ruining such a beloved franchise with so much potential. Expand

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I didn't think I'll like this game at all. I started to understand what was meant to be told in the last hours. I played it twice because I thought I was just on rage of Joel's death and I was sure damn right. It starts when you want to understand the side that you named as a villain. You realize you actually have similar stories on both size. They both lost their friends and loved ones while looking for revenge. However, Abby was done with that when they had the first fight. She just wanted to take the only one left for her and look for Fireflies. But Ellie was not satisfied without she died, so she went to look for her while believing she owned that to Joel. At the last fight it really started to make me uncomfortable even in the first time I played. I didn't wanted to get revenge on Abby anymore while Ellie was choking her to death. I was disgusted to play the last fight because the game really forced me to get revenge as Ellie and I suddenly hoped for Abby to live. I was so impressed that game made me cry for the one that killed Joel.

It was a very brave storyline, so I get why all these people didn't like the game. I'll not even going to talk about the graphics, sounds, animations, details and other stuff. It is one of the best games for that.
But I have to admit, there were some parts that I said "Was this really necessary" or "Why". And I really enjoyed the last part with Joel more than a lot of the game especially when he said "If somehow the lord gave me a second chance at that moment, I would do it all over again".

It was really a great game, again, I get why people are angry and upset, but it was one of the best ways to thrill the player which sure worked on me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II is a brutal, twisted and divisive masterpiece. I've been waiting 6 years to play this new game and I was not disappointed. The gameplay was incredible, graphics were unbelievable, music was beautiful yet daunting; but I want to focus on the story because this is where it trips most people. Part II is incomparable to its predecessor due to an entirely different narrative perspective and theme. Naughty Dog takes story telling to a whole new level in the gaming industry where other franchises are too afraid to touch. The direction they took was very admirable and respectable.

Part I crafts a beautiful father-daughter relationship from complete strangers. I love that Part II isn’t a repetition of that same idea. Instead of growing Joel and Ellie's relationship, they sadistically fueled their fans with anger and turmoil from the get-go to prove that they are willing to take risks. As disheartening and totally gruesome as Joel's death was, I didn't want to give up on the game just because my favorite character was gone. I wanted to take revenge on all those people alongside Ellie.

Part II's theme of revenge seems clear enough journeying as Ellie. However, when you switch to Abby, you quickly realize she has more cause for concern. This expansive section of the game allows the player to sit with their emotions and maybe think twice if Ellie's actions. I couldn't help but feel sorry for her as she converses with her friends without knowing it would be their last time. Abby's story had a strong arc and was the backbone to lift the story. She grew from a hardened killer to a woman offering forgiveness, similar to Joel.

Ellie’s revenge quest comes to an end as she realizes Abby isn’t the answer. The only way to move on and forgive Joel is by forgiving herself. The beauty of this game is that one storyline can be perceived in a hundred different ways. Naughty Dog understands this game will divide their fan base. Rather than falling back on a easy-to-please storyline, they narrated a very specific story in a bold and fresh way.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us 2 is really not a bad game, it has deep and emotional moments, colourful characters, a superb way of telling its story, not to speak of the finely tuned gameplay, taking all the good elements from its predecessor in a more vivid and realistic framework.

But then there is the story itself, and I just have to give my few cents, so here is where the SPOILERS begin. It is easy to see why the story splits the fanbase in two:

One half clinging to the old characters, they get a story not of loss, but of denial. No matter what you grow to want for the characters you love from the first part, you do not get it. Do you choose revenge? It is denied to you, not once but then once again. Do you instead choose peace and try to move ahead? Again denied and at least far off in the distance once the credits roll, with the few last positive anchor points of the past ripped away from you. So even if you change your mind, it is all the same: you can't have what you want. This game would benefit so much from the possibility of choice in its key moments, but without it, you as a player are forced down this bitter path of denial the storytellers have envisioned for you. From a bright start full of hope, almost every character of the old game ends up as a complete mess in a lonely void. Cannot be denied that this will be a memorable way nevertheless!

The other half of the fanbase, embracing the new characters and leaving the old ones behind, they experience a totally different story. Then you will get a revenge tale done right with only minor losses that were already becoming less and less impactful. Instead, you will find redemption and new companions on the way as a kickstart for adventures in a shiny future.

So for everyone expecting to continue the story of the first game, this will be a journey full of emotions, but mostly negative ones. And you only get compensation for it if you manage to swing over to the new characters.

Can't help it, but if you would apply this kind of denial-story to the first game you would end up with something like this: Joel choosing not to rescue Ellie for the sake of humanity - and then the surgeon not being able to extract the fungal cells and Ellie still dying in the process. Joel then walking off alone. Or, even more frustrating, Joel saving Ellie only to be shot down by Marlene who puts Ellie back to surgery and then the surgeon still fails the operation. Could happen, would be very intense and emotional, but ultimately just denying you any form of fulfilment. Not sure if that's a good story to tell!

Enemies will interact with each other, they emote when they are hurt or killed. There is so much attention to detail its really amazing. There is a character who shows what seems to be PTSD and as someone who also has PTSD it was very realistic and relateable. It was animated wonderfully, almost too well. I'm glad that people can play this game and experience that and hopefully feel how important it is to the character. The story is so great when you take your time with this game.

My brother asked me why did I pre-order the game, a lot of people said it sucks, I was skeptical and my response was "You don't know until you play". When I play the game, I am not immersed in a story like the first game, I have mixed emotion, and different outcomes, I have zero emotion after the ending. On the other hand, I love gameplay mechanics, attention to detail, and visualization. I used to replay the original TLOU on ps3 for at least 10 times because of its game mechanic and feature. It is the most realistic game I have ever played. I am still replaying the TLOU2. I believe ND's intention is on the right path to promote diversity, gender equality, and social awareness. When ND heavily focuses on a political view, it interrupts the story of nature. Therefore, the players are experiencing a different outcome and perspective, and lack of satisfaction. Expand

I honestly hated every second of it, gameplay wise i dont mind it but i play games not only for its gameplay but for its story and its characters, and believe me, after days of deliberating a review from this game i gotta say that it won't get any better than the score i gave it, why? Because one, it doesn't deserve the praise its been getting and being fair i know this site is blocking negative reviews so this is fair play.
Not gonna spoil what happens exactly but i would not reccomend buying it in the first week, month or year after its release, this feels like i've been robbed 60 which honestly would've been better spent at buying paper MTG or hell even buying barbells, clothing or a meal for the whole familiy/friends for christ sakes.
I can't get back my money, nor the sour taste in my mouth that this game left me with, but i can assure you it's not worth the hype, do not fall for the lies of critics or other players/people saying that they LOVE this game and give it a 10/10 because that is insulting to the memory of the Last of Us.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After an extremely rocky-road to release, filled with delays, leaks, bad-press, and hate (ironically enough), the last of us part 2 has finally been released and i have just completed it today at 1 AM in the morning. I can thankfully say it was worth the wait. [limk omitted per site rules]
The Last of Us Part 2 starts off with Joel informing Tommy about what exactly transpired at the end of part 1. Which as a we know, was a divisive and not easy decision to make. Does he lose another “daughter,” this time for the greater good, or does he put his self-interest above a world that is already too far deep into the **** To me, both choices would’ve been understandable. But one ends up having mass consequences.

At the beginning of the last of us part 2, ellie and joel’s relationship is strained and you can feel the tension evident in the wonderfully performed cut scenes with some of the most advanced motion capture technology to date, also accompanied by another fantastic soundtrack from Gustavo Santaolla. .

The game introduces you to the world of the last of us part 2 through a lengthy tutorial-like, opening chapter. Where Ellie goes on a peaceful patrol with her love interest Dina, taking out a few infected and clickers in the typical last of us style gameplay. In this sequence, while the gameplay, isn’t the most exciting (yet), we are re-introduced to the extremely detailed environments and world-building that we’d expect from naughty dog. In this game though, they really go above and beyond what they’ve done in the past, rivaling, or even surpassing rockstar in this aspect. Naughty as well even throughs in a few easter-eggs that many of us will at least chuckle at, or have a smile on our face.

Unfortunately, this smile on our face is quickly turned upsidedown when we are introduced to Abby and friends, who are on a haunt to fulfill a mission of revenge, even playing as her throughout this opening sequence. If you saw the spoilers like me, you knew exactly what this was going to escalate into.

Abby ultimately crosses into this horde of infected, which starts off one of the many extremely tense set pieces in the last of us part 2, accompanied by a heart-pulsing soundtrack also from Mr. Robot’s Mac Quayle. I honestly can’t emphasize enough how incredible the combat music is for this game. You can really feel the tension and sweaty palms. Abby, is fortunately saved by our very own, fan-favorite Joel, and then Uncle Tommy who are also out on patrol at this time. This portion of the game is honestly the only major gripe i have with the writing and execution. Tommy, amidst the snow-storm and infected horde, tells Abby his and Joel’s name. Joel and Tommy ultimately agree to shamelessly seek refuge from the dangerous horde, and terrible snowstorm, at Abby’s place, unaware of the fate that awaits. While this is happening, Ellie and Dina are having one of the many intimate moments of the game, only to be disrupted by Jesse, who informs them of Tommy and Joel’s absence. I could unfortunately only want to punch my wall at this moment due to just how stupidly Joel dies. At the time of me experiencing his death in the game, I was angry. Both at the game and at myself for buying into this lazy written game. This whole sequence I felt was extremely rushed and he died too early, the execution could’ve been better.

Thankfully enough, the game is only uphill from this point on, both in terms of gameplay, and writing. Ellie and Dina arrive in Seattle after Tommy, and we are immediately re-introduced to what we love about Naughty Dog games. The Seattle area features a linear-world similar to Uncharted The Lost Legacy. It features many side objectives, with an exploration into optional areas that pay off. This is accompanied by very tender and quirky dialogue moments between Ellie and Dina, extremely layered and detailed stores and environments, satisfying combat that now features a nicely refined gameplay system that includes a dodge and jump button that helps separate ellie from joel’s gameplay in the first game. Allowing her to be extremely stealth like a snake, or to get to areas out of reach in hopes for supplies, cute cards filled with easter-eggs, safes, or notes that fill in the gaps between the ongoing past and present battles in Seattle that include WLF, FEDRA, and the seraphites. A lot of them even include extremely interesting stories about personal experiences in the world, such as the story of Boris and his friends. The story of Boris and his friends is one of the many extremely layered optional side collectibles that you will not regret reading into.

It seems that Metacritic has a limit.

All in all, it's a 9/10 game, few weird pacing moments, but everything else it's a very memorable and special experience won't be forgotten for a while. I can only feel it'll be loved as time goes on.

Giving it a 0/10 untimely isn’t really a effective way of directing criticism. If you have issues either don’t buy it or return it and get a credit wherever you hit the game from. With that out of the way my personal score is a 6/10 the combat feels virtually the save a few extra gimmick like animals and such. The combat in the first game wasn’t the best but the story and writing carried it above what the combat was. However this game doesn’t have that luxury. The writing is unfortunately forced and contrived characters acting completely contrary to the previous game. And while time has passed the erratic nature of the time jumps is leaves the story feeling disjointed and unfocused. The games story often times has flashbacks with flashbacks. Creating a lack of cohesive focus. With the marketing focused on playing Ellie in reality playing another character for have the game. And that new character just isn’t written well. Combine that poor writing with obvious favoritism, she gets all the best combat sections, all the best weapons. I bought the game under the assumption that I’d be playing Ellie. This disconnect is caused by her killing Joel within the first hour. This was a terrible idea as it make us try to like a character that murdered the protagonist of the previous game we had gotten attached to. The Graphics while beautiful to me aren’t as important as gameplay, or a satisfying story. The forced nature of the story of what amounts to the theme of revenge and murder runs counter intuitive to the fact you can’t not kill people. The game seemingly wishes to judge you by making all of the deaths around you sound horrifying with gurgling noises, people calling for their mom. The fact the story has a, animal die to make the player feel bad when we learn who the owner was is just imposed by the fact we can’t not and Ellie has no way of knowing some random dog was someone else’s. This is why people dislike the game. The forced, and contrived nature of it. I never felt it could live up to the first because the bar was set too high. 6/10 the combat has little improvement, the graphics are beautiful, but poor pacing, writing, story, and character ultimately drags it down. It’s not a bad game and for the most part is competently made. The problem with subverting expectations is that you run the risk of alienating the audience you already have. Expand

I love this game as much as the first. It took me close to 25 hours to finish it, its a real rollercoaster of emotions that adds to the experience. The player is not asked to sympathize with every decision in the game and that makes it special to me. I try to understand the hate, but i dont. Abby looks like a female crossfit-athlete, if you cant see pass that then what can I tell you.I love this game as much as the first. I love the plot, it's a perfect close of the original game. Abby is my favorite character and her friends, but also Jesse, Tommy :(. Ellie is not my favorite now. I'm thinking about the game all the days and talk about it a lot whit my friends. Great job ND

My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined.
I waited 5 years to play this
And they gave me a horrible intro and **** ending
I just want to forget about this game.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
