First of all, just to address the constant "review bombing"... Most of those who have rated it between 0-4 have most likely not even played a minute of the game, they're just going by the spoilers before release because they're mad about it. Well guess what?.. some of them were actually incorrect anyway! I won't do a long drawn out review type rating, but what I will say is that Part II isFirst of all, just to address the constant "review bombing"... Most of those who have rated it between 0-4 have most likely not even played a minute of the game, they're just going by the spoilers before release because they're mad about it. Well guess what?.. some of them were actually incorrect anyway! I won't do a long drawn out review type rating, but what I will say is that Part II is incredible from start to finish, I actually enjoyed the 2nd half more than the first which I didn't think I would, especially due to how different it is (spoiler free). The graphics are one of the best I've seen on ps4, the facial expressions especially are excellent and really show the emotions of each character. The gameplay itself is incredible, it's just an extension of the original, but made better. The story itself has jaw dropping moments, and then the quieter and more peaceful ones. All in all I would recommend this game to all of the returning fans of the original, as it will not disappoint. What I liked about it most was that at several moments throughout I felt like it was nearing the games end, but then more kept coming, absolutely amazing. My one gripe is actually collecting parts/materials/ammo, this seems to be a bit less responsive than the first game, but we can't have it all! Expand

She validates segments of the population who've been told to hide who they are. She's extremely realistic within that population. As Ashley Johnson said, all the tomboys and misfits can sit at my table. I also loved her relationship with Dina. I didn't want to play Abby at all, so when I reached a point of sympathy and even liking for her, I knew Naughty Dog had done their job. I also like how it set up an obvious opening for part 3 at the end. Gameplay was fun. There were some improvements in weapons and stealth tactics from the first game. Lying prone and crawling were cool. I love stealth, and this game is excellent for that. To all those I keep reading "I'm not a homophobe but" just remember that "but" negates what came before it. I wouldn't have considered you to be homophobes if you weren't constantly saying you aren't. I believe that many have their balance challenged by two women who don't need men to survive, which is also a huge part of the game's strength. Stop with the online bullying. I cannot wait for 3 and for the HBO series. Expand

The gameplay and the leveldesign are the best that i have ever seen and the attention to detail is massive!
But there are some things that are so unique about it:
One night i texted my friend who also played the game and said: "Abby is a really nice person
if you dont think of what she did to Joel". The next thing i was going to say was: "But i am trying to forgive her..." but at the moment i typed it in I was like: wait a minute, thats exactly what Ellie told Joel at the very end. "I dont think I can ever forgive you for that... but I would like to try". In a video about the game i heard the statement: "You play the game, but even more the game plays with you."
With things like above and many others this statement couldnt be more true.
Not only the in game characters are in a conflict, but the player is too with the characters, their choices and the choices he takes by himself.
It takes some time to understand the game completely, but it is a masterpiece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So I have never left a review before for anything on this site, and actually just created an account to leave my two cents on this one. I literally just finished it this morning, and now that I can finally indulge in the reviews WITH spoilers, I am simultaneously saddened by the online vitriol from internet trolls and relieved that more in-depth reviewers were left feeling equally as confused as I am right now.

I want to just focus on the story with this review. I completely understand what Naughty Dog was trying to do to make us feel like every character was flawed, and that the world of The Last of Us is inhabited by far more darkness than light. That being said, it was very difficult to play as Abby for the 2nd half of the game. I found myself rooting for each member of her posse to be taken out. It felt as if I were playing Bill in the Kill Bill movies. It didn't feel right, even with the Lev/Yara storyline. I think if Abby had killed Tommy or Maria while on the run with Lev/Yara from the WLF, or something along those lines, I think I would have felt a lot more invested in her story, even if it still ended up with her killing Joel, but towards the end of the game (when she realizes he killed her father).

The nihilism of the world of TLOU comes through loud and clear in this chapter, and I applaud Naughty Dog for being brave enough to put their vision out there, regardless of the inevitable backlash. My hope is that whenever they come out with part 3, they wrap up the storylines in such a way as to redeem both Ellie and Abby, and consequently make the infinte sadness of part 2 worth something.

**Side note: I loved the Lev and Yara characters. Sexual identity is 100% self-determined, and I appreciate them working that into the story. If coming out in today's society is difficult, doing it as Lev did is even more impressive. More practically, it lends a real legitimacy to their escape from the Seraphites, rather than simply waking up and saying, this is wrong. Bravo.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After the end of the first part, I felt the finished story, so I didn't think there would be a second part. At the time of the announcement of the game in 2016, i was still delighted with this, and waited for the release of the game, periodically replaying the first part. knowing how they like to post various rumors, I avoided all information about the game in order to dive into the game on my own. In the first hours, I got an unexpected pain from the plot twist, but continued the game, I wanted to understand that everything was not done in vain, and everything has a logical development. Unfortunately, my hopes were dashed. The illogicality of actions began with the behavior of Joel, who changed in character and now trusts the first person who comes across and tells all the information about himself: where he lives, what he and his brother do, what their names are, although it is obvious that nobody in this world can no longer be trusted if you never knew him. As a result, the character of both Joel and Ellie changed. The supporting characters are just dummies, without an interesting story and any logical actions.
Especially pleased with the pregnant doctor, who has nothing to do and she went to fight in the last month, just delirium. Already now it is difficult for me to continue to write a review, with each written word I am more and more in pain from what continuation they made on the first game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The storyline is an utter mess, filled with bland characters and awkward dialogue. The game touches on interesting themes and ideas but the writing just isn't good enough to make you care.

One of the main themes the game tries to explore is violence and whether or not it's justified. It tries to get us to think about how a violent act can create a cycle of violence that only leads to more misery and loss for everyone.

One of the problems with this is that it's completely at odds with the gameplay. You are given an incredible array of customizable weapons and throughout the game, you murder so many people in all kinds of gruesome and horrific ways. The game even gives you achievements based on upgrading your weapons to a high level so they obviously want you to care about this side of things.

You're also made to kill dogs and people to progress the story, you don't even have a choice it literally makes you stab dogs and beat people to death. This doesn't make sense because the game wants you to question your actions as a player but then the game forces you to do things you have no control over.

The other problem is that the game brutally removes a main character from the first game and then half way through makes you play as the character that kills said character. It's not for a short time either, it's literally half the game. This decision has been praised as being 'bold' and 'brave' by some and in a way that's true but that doesn't mean it's good or that it was the right decision.

The main reason anybody is buying this game is because they were fans of the first game. The main reason people loved it so much was because of the relationship between our two protagonists. The relationship between Joel and Ellie is the heart of the entire series and it's the reason people bought this game.

The decision to kill off one of them isn't the issue, it's how and when it happened and what followed. Popular protagonists have been killed off again and again in every type of media. It happens in Games, TV shows, Movies and Books, and as long as it is handled well and progresses the story in a satisfying way people are fine with it.

This game fails to do that.

They literally tore out the heart of the series and nothing that followed made it worth it. The storylines and relationships that follow are nowhere near as compelling and emotional as the relationship between Joel and Ellie in the first game. They are pretty to look at and there are some nice set-pieces but they don't feel like they matter simply because you don't care that much about the characters involved.

They could have made a compelling, engaging, emotional storyline that challenged the audience but when you remove the heart of the series it's almost impossible to do that. It's very difficult to get people to care about a story if they don't care about the characters involved. The emotional core of the series died about two hours in and in a game that is driven by its narrative this is a huge issue as it makes everything that follows feel a bit empty and meaningless.

They try their best but they gave themselves a mountain to climb and they never make it to the summit. They really try their best to make you care about the people involved but none of them are all that engaging, empathetic, or interesting especially in contrast to Joel and Ellie's relationship in the first game.

I guess the question is why?

Why did they decide to go in this direction with this game? The game director Neil Druckmann said before releasing the game that "We knew people were going to hate it".

I don't understand this at all, who is the game for then? If you knew that fans were going to hate it then why make this game? I understand not wanting to write a safe, fan service driven storyline but I don't get why you would write a story that fans would really despise.

I don't know it just feels like they tried way too hard to subvert expectations and in doing so ripped out the emotional core of the entire series in an extremely unsatisfying way. It feels like a wasted opportunity to not just make a great sequel but to make more great games after this.
