This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Terrible writing. This is the most unsatisfying game that I have ever played. We don’t even get our revenge, no instead we forgive the person that killed our father figure. What they advertised is not what we got. The gameplay and visuals are amazing but the story and characters are garbage. Unbelievable, I can not believe that we waited 7 YEARS for this disappointment of “entertainment”. If this game gets GoTY then I am finished with games, because I don’t want this garbage to be the future of gaming. I play games to be entertained and not to be lectured. Expand

Naughty Dog was famous for one thing and one thing only. Their stories. With this game, they have lost that claim to fame.
Without going into spoilers, the entire set of main characters comes off as unlikable, the plot that drives their actions forward is so simplistic a highschooler could have written it, and the dialogue is just... bad. There's simply nothing left to feel attached to

Without going into spoilers, the entire set of main characters comes off as unlikable, the plot that drives their actions forward is so simplistic a highschooler could have written it, and the dialogue is just... bad. There's simply nothing left to feel attached to after the first couple of hours, when you realise the characters you came to love in the previous game are either not the same anymore, or not there at all.
So, once you take the narrative elements out of the equation, what's left?
Predictably, not much. The gameplay is the same affair we've been seeing delivered by Naughty Dog since the first Uncharted, i.e. mediocre AI taking pot-shots at you from behind chest high walls, while you try to do the same to them. The "stealth" is equally unimpressive.
Motion capture also felt off at places, which is actually weird given the budget and development time this game was afforded. You'd think for a flagship franchise like this, they'd have taken more care to avoid entering the uncanny valley every time a character opened their mouth.
And to finally say something positive, and justify those 2/10 points I gave it, the graphics are pretty damn good. If you want to take a glimpse at what the next gen games are going to look like, you should take a look at this game. It really does look amazing.

So in conclusion, I can only recommend this game if you fetish is staring at stellar quality graphics. If your priorities lie anywhere else, you'll only be dissapointed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. They ruined the franchise with how they treated Joel’s death. The end of the first game was so poignant. This second game is a complete and utter farce. They disrespected Joel and Introduced the most unlikable new characters that it actually hurt having to play as Abbie. 0/10. Giving two stars for the world and the gameplay, plus the horses. But the story, characters and plot are all so bad they overshadow anything positive this game could have held onto. Expand

They way 'you know who' killed Joel pissed me off. ND should have made him sacrifice his life for Ellie in the end instead of beating him to death with a golf club.
A disservice to fan's of the first game. Completely dragging them through the dirt for what? Write compelling story archs for new characters and leave the existing ones alone. That's why I dropped it to a 3

I never knew how hard it would be to convince myself to continue playing a video game. I look to video games for fun and enjoyment. This game was a major letdown and had me angry so many times. Wasted potential. Please do yourself a favor and skip this game. I want to pretend this doesn't exist and the first game is the only canon.

    - The gameplay was completely copied from the first part, without changes (improvement of weapons, character abilities)

    - I'm generally silent about the parkour of a woman 9 months pregnant, complete nonsense, by the end of the supply trip, a miscarriage is guaranteed.
    - And yeah, Ellie wasn't revealed, Deana wasn't revealed, Tommy wasn't revealed, and to recall the names of the others, you need to google it, because they are not remembered at all - they’re empty or, again, they were not revealed. The rest of the characters forget instantly, after 5-10 minutes after the dialogue with them.
+ Good things about this game: VFX (wind, fire, brains on the wall, and etc.), physics, the work of the character artist, animation, and environment artists who created the beautiful world around them.

They’ve somehow managed to **** up the sequel to one of the most critically acclaimed games of all time in a spectacular way. The writing in this game is some of the worst I’ve ever seen. It’s Star Wars: Last Jedi bad. It’s GoT Season 8 bad.

    - A lot of events happen by coincidence and guesswork.
    - The old cast and factions have essentially been thrown out the window for new characters and factions.
    - The message of the game is shallow and hypocritical.
    - The game is morally skewered towards one out of two narratively leading sides of the story.
    - The story is a scrambled mess, littered with multiple flashbacks which has less emotional effect on the player because of how the story has been structured.
    - There’s next to no levity in the game, which can be extremely draining on both the player and on the storytelling, since the events in the game losses it’s emotional impact and becomes more predictable.
    - Some character choices are absolutely none-sensical and comes out of the blue.
    - The game either assumes that the player can correctly assume the correct character development during narrative gaps taking place before and during the game OR a lot of character development was extremely overlooked for the sake of plot twists.

I’m sick and tired of big IPs getting away with this trash level of writing while racking in billions of dollars in profits. This needs to stop or else entire industries will devolve into a cesspool of badly written media and litterateur. STOP, JUST PLEASE STOP.

Amazing graphics, design, sound... technically impressive.
The story in dark, interesting, bold, ambiguous.... it creates interest.

The game is great. Firstly, you have to go through the game at the max. level of difficulty, then you will feel the AI of the enemies, the danger and atmosphere of this game. Secondly, there are some plot points that have led me into perplexity or even angered me. But if you complete the game with the creator to the end, then you will understand that everything was not in vain.

The game is spectacular in its mechanics and in the narration of the story, but it is unnecessary to include political issues such as the LGBT community in a game. Without them, the game would be top notch. Just look at the example of The Witcher, Mario Odissey, Zelda, Uncharted, and several more. Hopefully Naughty Dog reconsiders.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So I'm 3/4 of the way through the game and I honestly want to refund it. I'm literally only going on because I just want to see Ellie beat the antagonist to death... I did not read any of the spoilers going into it, I didn't even know it was being review bombed until I pulled up metacritic to leave a review... The dialogue is trash, the plot and decision making is trash. As a result I just can't believe any of these characters actions, was this even written by the same people? How did we go from some of the most believable characters EVER written in TLOU1 to this?! While I'm sure there are some homophobic pieces of trash that hate this game because of lesbians, for me you could replace Dina with a guy and the dialogue would still make me cringe and want to turn the console off. My day has been ruined and my disappointment is immeasurable at the waste of potential. Maybe this is my fault for hyping myself up and playing TLOU1 the other day to get amped up for TLOU2 and my expectations were set so very high, however the difference in writing quality is startling. Basically the only thing this game has going for it is pretty scenery and a good soundtrack which is why I give it a 2 out of 10. Expand

Ideally both. But if your gameplay's the usual action-adventure cookie-cutter stuff, and the story absolutely atrocious, the end result isn't going to be any good.

This could be the greatest game ever made, and I'd still despise it because of the crunch development. That's what's p***ing me off the most about this game, the fact that a horrible, abusive practice went into making it and game journos are letting the man responsible get away with it with no consequences because he's hiding behind progressivism and using it as a defense for his actions. I never would've bought this game, it just never appealed to me, but I'll gladly drag it through the mud for normalizing crunch.

But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then...
