This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Really enjoyed this game, gameplay is great and graphics are probably the best I’ve seen on the PS4. I know lots of people were mad about Joel dying but his death is used as a means to drive the plot forward and develop Ellie as a character. Really don’t think the story was as bad as so many people were making it out to be. That said, I will I enjoyed the first one a little bit more. Expand

Any game can be argued to be imperfect but nit picking aside, I can't think of any other game more deserving of a 10. I feel for Naughty Dog given the organised and malicious review bombing, but hey - if the main reason is an adverse reaction to the fate of key characters, then it's a credit to the game how intensely connected players are to those characters. I feel for Naughty Dog given the organised and malicious review bombing, but hey - if the main reason is an adverse reaction to the fate of key characters, then it's a credit to the game how intensely connected players are to those characters. I spent a while considering if TLOU2 was better than #1 - or if the sequel was justified. But fans wouldn't have been happy without a sequel (and dare I say there will be flaming if #3 isn't produced). But on reflection I think you have to think about this as "Part 2", and how it really does complement the first game and fills in the story. I partly agree with some who thought there should have been some player decisions allowed to drive the ending - but like a good (if tragic) novel - this is the story that has been told. And it's emotive power is apparent - which is primarily what makes it the triumph I think it will be regarded as. Cutting edge graphics, gameplay and flow are all there but secondary to this. To all the haters, get over it - life isn't all black and white and the good guys don't always live happily ever after. Expand

Please do yourself a favor and play this game without even consider all the negative reviews. Play it and then decide if you love or hate it. This game is a masterpiece, which raises the bar of video-game. This is absolute and pure art but, maybe, somebody didn't deserve it. This is a game everyone should play, not only gamers.

I do NOT judge games based on a meticulous set of principles or mechanics, such as how the gunplay felt or how the sound quality was. Instead, I judge games on the entire experience and how I felt after the credits rolled. I understand that this type of review may not be for everyone, but if you were like me in any way, I think you’ll enjoy this.

CONTEXT: The first last of us was my favorite game of all time. I say WAS because the last of us part 2 has filled its role. I understand that neither the first nor second last of us has the most inanely deep story like the Witcher 3 or something, but its execution is beyond anything I’ve ever played before.

Preface: There is, unfortunately, a LOT of troll hating going on, do not listen to it. I actually really appreciate the people who genuinely don’t like it and provide legit criticisms. As the director, Neil drunk man said, this game is going to divide people, and it certainly did. That being said, let me say why I think the last of us 2 is a 10/10.

This is NOT a comprehensive review that describes each individual component of the game (gunplay, sound, controls, etc) but rather I speak from the heart and I want to convey why I think this game is amazing. I was very nervous after the initial backlash before the game was released since the first game was my favorite of all time and I didn’t want its image to be tarnished in my mind. That being said here’s why I love this game.

IN MY OPINION, this game accomplishes everything we were told it was going to be. It shows how the cycle of violence can make anyone act unpredictably, it makes you question the motives of characters you’ve loved for years, and it facilitates every aspect of its core gameplay around the story. This game has brought up emotions in me that I have never felt from any piece of media before. It gut punches you approximately 10 times throughout the story and I believe this is why so many gamers are upset. This game does not make you “feel good“ in fact, by the very end, it’ll make you feel very sad. I may be wrong, but I feel like most gamers wanted a cool, exciting story with a happy ending (like every other story ever), but naughty dog did what most others don’t, they didn’t create THAT kind of story.

The gameplay and shooting mechanics are not the most picture-perfect refined controls ever, the scavenging does not facilitate a perfect crafting system, but every decision about every mechanic in the last of us 2 feels like it was specifically made to make the player feel grounded in reality and to facilitate the story unfolding. If you loved the last of us 1, and you have an open mind as to what fate may lie ahead for certain characters, I think you’ll very much enjoy the last of us 2. If not, that’s ok, but as someone who was extremely invested in the first game, I loved this one even more, and although I came out of this one crying (I actually did), the fact that it could elicit such strong emotions is why I think this game deserves a 10/10.

It is not perfect, the last of us 1 wasn’t perfect, no game is perfect, but the storytelling, gameplay, and characters proved to be an astonishing and powerful experience.

I will never forget this experience, and that’s a great thing.

P.S. As far as the controversial “diversity” choices made in this game, I did not feel like it took anything away from the story. It is not shoved down your throats by any means. And I say that as someone who thinks that “forced diversity” just for the sake of diversity is nonsense.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First things first: Joel deserved to die. It hurts to see such a developed and complex protagonist get killed off in the way he did, but after the events of the first game, after he doomed humanity in a bloody massacre, he had only one fate left for him. That being said, the important part isn't even that he died, it was the effect it had on Ellie, supplemented on the flashbacks given throughout the game. Immediately after opening herself up to forgiveness after what he did, she lost him in the most brutal was possible, starting a seemingly endless chain of revenge and regret. All that only to realize how emotionally draining the path of vengeance can be.

As far as the supposed agenda goes, Ellie was shown to be lesbian even in the DLC to the first game. This was no new development, and was a simple continuation to established story. Lev's revelation of being a trans male was a subtle, yet profound commentary on the issues people today face. Just because something is included in a game doesn't mean it is part of a hidden political agenda. If that was the case, then every gaming company would be actively encouraging violence or even murder. The inclusion was a subtle, refined, and well deserved nod to the LGBT community.

It was more than interesting to play a modern RPG with no freedom of choice. From Witcher, to Red Dead, to Life is Strange and beyond, every modern RPG has had some form of choice via action or dialogue to imbed the player into the protagonist, and I don't think many people took too kindly to the very real train of thought that Ellie took throughout the game. I for one, am thankful for this change of pace. I cant imagine an impressionable and bloodstained teen reacting very differently to her surrogate father's death, justified or not. I completely understand why she did what she did after looking back on all she ever knew in this hellscape of a world. Abby, on the other hand, lived in our pre-apocalyptic world, and because of that had a similar view to us, the players. I found myself understanding and agreeing with every choice she made, even if I hated it. It was a brilliant way of developing a complex villain. Every choice made by every character was tailor made for that character, and letting the viewer change that with choice would tarnish the purity of the development. This was storytelling at its finest.

The gameplay was simply fantastic. There were parts that I found myself frustrated, yet mesmerized due to the difficulty. The action was real. It was dangerous. It was to be avoided if possible at the threat of guaranteed death. It fed perfectly into the hopeless setting painted by the brilliant graphics and storytelling. Different factions of enemies had vastly different ways of hunting you down, all requiring their own unique approach on medium to high difficulties. The subtle notes left throughout the map further expanded on the hopeless mood of the setting. Finding random elements in the world to trigger full on story scenes gave it a near open world feeling. I wish more games would venture out to create unique experiences like this.

While it may have been among the most depressing games I've ever played, it was undeniably incredible and compelling. 10/10 would recommend.

There is a ton of hate out there right now due to how this game was made but I just want to commend Naughty Dog on one the most complex stories I have been able to experience. It is definitely not an easy story and it is not for everyone. However, in a world where we are fighting for social justice this is just the kind of story we need. This game takes you on a necessary emotional roller coaster, where you see that everything is gray. You will not find clear-cut lines that tell you who are the good guys and who are the bad guys. You will not see what is right and what is wrong in this game. This game shows you why both sides (and there are many sides between Ellie vs Abby, Scars vs Wolves, and so forth) believe more than anything that what they are doing is right and justified. This game shows you that the world is grayer than you think and sometimes to see what is actually right and wrong in a situation you have to consider the other side as well as your own. We are a world divided just like in this game. We are republican’s vs democrats. We are Christians vs non-Christians. We are mask wearers vs non mask wears. We are Trump supporters vs non-Trump supporters. We are just always fighting and divided. We never take the time to understand the other side and see where they are coming from. To see that in this world there is no clear-cut lines pointing to what is right and what is wrong. Every situation is different just like every person is different. This is the type of message we need to be having in this divided world. We need to take the time to walk in each other’s shoes and see the situation from another perspective. Only then can we truly respect each other and make a difference in this world. So again, Naughty Dog thank you so much for taking the risk that you did on this game to give us a story that we truly needed. Am I sad and emotional? Most definitely! But the journey was amazing, thoughtful, engaging, and so damn realistic even for a zombie-type game. Showing us that there are no good guys and bad guys but just people. And people are messy, complicated, and very imperfect. Expand

    Absolutely a masterpiece.
A game that, as media, has shown that gaming in fact reached its maturity in storytelling.
The story belongs to the artist, to its creators. People want to take ownership and control over the story. Childish way to face the world. The traditional gamer community wants only the conventional power fantasies with heroes with happy endings. Once more: childish.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don’t typically believe in 10 star ratings, as it means that the experience was literally perfect. However, I’m giving this one full marks to offset some of the idiotic reviews/takes that other posters have made. In actuality, I would give this one a 9.5/10. I have seen some valid criticism of the game, but far more **** from people who either missed the point, did not play it, or only watched a few cutscenes. Pros: Stellar graphics and environments - Ellie and Abby traverse Jackson, Seattle, and California throughout the game. Each area is unique, and offers the player ample opportunity to explore their surroundings. Jackson is snowy and mountainous, Seattle is dark and dreary, and Cali is bright and warm. This diversity in environment allows the player to see how various parts of the United States fared during, and in the aftermath of the pandemic. Excellent mixed gameplay - slow paced exploration allows Naughty Dog to flesh out their characters through conversations. That’s right. If you only watched the leaked cutscenes, you have missed out on hours of dialogue that give better context to the characters actions. Heart pounding encounters with infected and human adversaries offer many different scenarios to mess around with. AI will often treat the same scenario differently if another attempt at a section is made, allowing for a degree of replayability. Combat is absolutely **** brutal, and can often be unsettling. Enemies will be blown apart by explosives, human victims will gurgle their last breaths after being stabbed in the throat, and every once in a while a wounded adversary will beg for their life. While this isn’t the goriest game I have played, the violence is realistic to the extent that it adds to the horrifying nature, and atmosphere of the game. New infected!:

Shamblers are disgusting and dangerous, and a new “hunter” type of enemy can often be found in waitin for Ellie or Abby, leading to some decent jump scares. I won’t say too much about the boss encountered in the basement of the hospital, but I will say that it is horrifying, difficult, and ultimately rewarding to kill. ... The Story: I’m not going to go into too much detail, but The Last of us II offers a complex, thoughtful, and devastating story. You will see fan favourite characters, both old and new killed in gruesome
fashion. One of said deaths (I’m sure most of you already know who) leads Ellie on a quest for vengeance, which ultimately leads her down a dark, and arguably indefensible path. Many people claim that the game boils down to “revenge is bad”, but I feel this is an oversimplification. If you read between the lines, you will find themes of empathy, understanding, and ultimately forgiveness. This is partly the result of a bold decision made by naughty dog, in which the player takes control, and learns the story of the games initial main antagonist. After the final scene, it is abundantly clear that there are no “hero’s and villains” in The Last of us’ universe, which is a nice change of pace from other story driven games, which tend to be more black and white. If you go into this game open minded, and allow yourself to understand the mindsets of certain characters, you will be treated to an excellent story. Cons

A couple inconsistencies in the writing: While I overall adored the writing, parts of the middle section were slightly sloppy, and dragged a little bit. For example, when you are on the island when the wolves attack, you are needlessly thrown into the middle of the fighting. At this point in the story, it would make far more sense for the player to avoid this area at all costs. Abby is trying to save Lev And Yara, yet she ran into the thick of battle?? You initially arrived on the island on a boat, which was stashed in a remote part of the island. This boat would have been perfect for a getaway, but the protagonists insist on pushing into the city to steal another boat. Levs excuse was “there is fighting back that way”. Isn’t there way more fighting around the boats you are trying to steal in the city?? I understand that Naughty Dog wanted to show this set-piece, as it served as a larger scale example of the horrors that often accompany an insatiable lust for vengeance. However, the way they led the player to this scenario seemed a little sloppy, and poorly thought out. Overall: This game is undoubtably one of my all time favourites. If you are willing to set aside your own biases as to what you think the story should be, you will likely get far more out of it.
