The Last of Us 2 has probably been one of the most polarizing games of the last decade. Naughty Dog takes a risk with their story telling in this latest installment of their post-apocalyptic IP. Gone are the formulaic yet entertaining stories as seen with the Uncharted series; no, in this sequel we get to explore the stages of grief one goes through when encountered with a tragic loss, and the effects they have on themselves and their loved ones.

    Brief Description:

Ellie’s story in The Last of Us 2 is one of grueling pain, suffering, and ultimately revenge. As her journey progresses, her insatiable lust for revenge grows stronger, throwing away her humanity with each life she takes. We’re also introduced to the character Abby, whose journey echoes Ellie’s. Both characters have experienced a lot in this unforgiving world, and ultimately it’s up to the player to figure out the right and wrong of the actions made by the two, if this is even possible. The moral ambiguity presented in this story makes it difficult to root for a hero, but this is the way Naughty Dog challenges you to view it, and form your own opinions about the story they told. Story:

While I enjoyed the 25 hours I put into this game , I did a couple issues which prevented me from giving it a higher score. The story on paper is very interesting, however translating it to a game can be difficult. While I appreciate the parallels the game made with flashbacks for both Ellie and Abby; the execution and timing interrupted the flow of the narrative. The pacing of the game as a whole suffered due to the inclusion of the scenes, albeit they were necessary to flesh out the characters and revisit old relationships. Gameplay/Visuals: The gameplay was very much similar to the original game; however, it’s clear that the developers took the time to perfect this gameplay loop and make it as enjoyable as possible. Visually the game is stunning, and running on my old PS4 still manages to hold a constant and smooth 30 FPS. No issues to be had here. In addition, the fan noise produced by my OG PS4 was not as bad as I initially had thought it would be. Much quieter when compared to other taxing games such as God of War, and AC Odyssey. It’s worth noting that I had cleaned my PS4 recently, and replaced the thermal paste (may have helped somewhat).

    Wrapping Up:

Overall, this game does a lot of things right. If you go into it with an open mind, a decent understanding of empathy and other basic human emotions, you’re in store for a masterful piece of storytelling.

Bold, challenging & thought-provoking. Last of Us Part 2 doesn't care about providing you with a fun fan service sequel and goes in places that some fans of the original may dislike.
I suggest anyone just passing through here, ignore the hate, ignore the positivity, you owe it to yourself to play it and make up your own mind.

The Last of Us 2 set out to ask one question: "Why is your violence more justified than mine?" and as I saw the credits roll I came to realize that everyone at NaughtyDog did a stellar job at answering it.

This game isn't just a great piece of entertainment, it's a necessary one.
No game is perfect but aside some pacing and side content issues this one is very close to it.

You can tell from reading most of the negative reviews that they are driven by a certain agenda (most obviously didn't play the game and just read up facts from the Wikipedia entry). They try to make this not too obvious by constructing fake arguments for their negative downvotes ("This game has plot holes... the character design is terrible...") Quite telling by the comments that claim Abby to be the Transgender character of the game... Yeah. Surprise. She isn't.
By all means TLOU2 is not a perfect game (it has some slog in the middle and could have been streamlined). But what it is, is still an amazing achievement. Character design, the level of detail, the intelligence of the AI - that's all top notch and unprecedented until now (RDR2 comes close second). As for the story: What other way could there have been? What did people expect? The further adventures of Joel and Ellie? A retreat of the same story - just with better graphics? The first game was based around "the things you do for love". The second takes this sentiment and turns it around. It is "the things you do out of hate". And - at least for me - it worked. It turned Abby from Ellie's Nemesis and a brute killer into a person that you can actually root for (at least understand her motives).
Of course, if you want your stories not challenging and clean cut, this is probably not for you. TLOU2 follows more in the vain of "Game of Thrones". And people complaining were probably also wishing that the latter was Ned Stark vs. Ice Zombies.

Genuinely mediocre game, I thought throughout the first half it was a masterpiece and then the **** plot of "revenge bad" came up and the game tries to make you sympathize with a character that it just set up as a villain, rewriting the end of the first game changing the African doctor in a broken down and dirty hospital room who had questionable intentions to the white guy who saves zebras and just want to save the world in a super clean and sterile room.
The previous game continually points to the Fireflies being incompetent terrorists but Joel needs to deliver Ellie even if it's not likely to get a cure. Turns out for some reason the Fireflies are so incompetent that they can't make a cure unless they kill her and neither she or her father-figure got told that. Joel would have had all his weapons and supplies taken and him being escorted to the edge of the city to fend for himself with NOTHING. Being unable to go on without her and having his daughter taken away from him the second time he couldn't handle it and saved her. I don't remember where but the game implies there were many other immune people who have already been killed by the Fireflies.

TLOU2 made Joel's ambigous personal choice to save a daughter-figure after he couldn't save his own daughter into just Joel being the villian that ruined everything for everyone and he deserved to be tortured and killed infront of his brother and daughter-figure. And the worst part is Ellie never forgave Joel for lying to her, Abby's crew took away that from her and she's angry. At that point the players are emotionally invested in Ellie's grief and we're encouraged to get revenge, but nope halfway through you just stop playing as her and play as Abby for THE REST OF THE GAME, helping your enemy and the game throwing in random stuff to make you sympathize with her, playing with dogs, ushering children to school, taking care of a pregnant woman is all just cheap ways to make you like her.

Manny is a womanizer who's banging 3-4 different women telling them he's the only one for them, and then starts hitting on Abby, Mel is just an **** in general making Owen cheat on Abby to be with her instead, Nora and the 2 other guys are ****s for trying to kill Ellie and so on and so forth.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I see all the people saying that they hate playing as Abby and they despise her. I understand them, she killed Joel in a horrible way, like a monster. I wasn't thrilled to play as Abby also and I was very mad at her and wanted to see Ellie kill her brutally, the same way she did to Joel,
but when you get to know her and listen to her story and her perspective of the world it makes you empathize with her. Because Joel killed two things for her 1) Her dad (in a very brutal way, I believe that he could just push him away or knock him out, and not shove a syringe down his throat) 2) Any hope for a vaccine/cure for the infection, and hope for a better world, a saved world.
All that just so he won't lose Ellie, which, became like a daughter for him. I understand why he did it but I really didn't agree with it. So I can understand Abby, not agree or justify her actions, but understand them. This game is way more complex then good-evil/wrong-right/Villain-hero
I think its a beautiful game and it has a really awesome gameplay mechanics and overall very fun game to play and get into it. I'm not giving it 10/10 because It failed to connect me to the characters and really empathize with them as the first one did. And I didn't get emotional with this game like the first game. I believe that many of the deaths in this game were not dealt with, and you didn't feel anything for them because the player didn't show any emotion to their death (Manny/Jessie ) and just forgot about them. Unlike the first game, Tess's death does have an impact on Joel's and Ellie's journey. Maybe not a huge one, but they don't just brush it away, they tend to it and Ellie tries to talk about it. I think that the meaning and impact of death were lacked in the second game. Other than that its a beautiful and amazing game. 9/10

i loved this game from start to finish. First of all, the game-play is extraordinary. The stealth mechanics blew my mind. I am glad they fixed the bow aiming system. The visuals are breathtaking and I couldn't stop using the photo mode to capture all my favorite moments.

The story took us deeper into this post apocalyptic world. i really wanted more exploration of this world that naughty dog had created in part 1. I am glad I got to see that. The story-line is definitely darker, more brutal and unpredictable. I am that this game took me on a different path. It made me question my decisions. Whatever steps I took I felt i was synced with the character I was playing because I understood where they were coming from.

In the end I will say, I was satisfied and in the need for more. It's an original story. It's not based on a book or anything. It was made from scratch. That eliminates the element of predictability. I can't wait for Part III. The story can be summed by one of the best dialogues in gaming history, "Revenge is a fools game" - Arthur Morgan.

As a player, I've never been so excited to finish a game to see how it ends, but at the same time, as the final approaches, I get more and more sentimental and sad. Emotional chaos is wanted from a plot point of view. Overall, a very good job of Naughty Dog as they manage to convey feelings in this game.

The plot idea in this game, paired with the breathtaking setting, the ingeniously used zombies, and the perfectly realistic dialogues and facial expressions, really inspired me from the first moment in the game. There is no comparable story I played with similar plot twists so far.

It begins with a scene with Tommy, the brother of Joel, and Joel himself. The dialog is a minimalist hint where the journey could lead to plot-wise.

The creators shed light from other perspectives on Joels decision to rescue Ellie from the Firefly researchers. It was already clear in the first TLOU that due to his previous history, Joel might have acted selfishly. All shades of gray will be needed to explore the good and the bad within TLOU2.

It is developing a masterful drama, which grabbed me immediately. The ultra-realistic dialogues mentioned above are an important point. Every, and I mean every spoken sentence makes sense and is on point. It's bizarre how good the story is advanced by the cutscenes. A grand manifesto is revealed to the player the further he follows this story, which also has the best facial animations in the whole PS4 game history.
In one sentence: The most human game ever for the PS4.

In a game that is also told by flashbacks, I always had the feeling that I was already or very close to the finale and was still more fascinated that the story continued elegantly. And if you think you are finished, you are not finished. And when you think you're at the end, it goes on;). Loved all the twists.

The design that is the all-around depressing mood, especially in buildings contaminated with spores, is just top-notch. My request, take your time to explore the area and let the scenery affect you here and there. Worth it. Rarely has a game brought the mood and the environment or landscape so well into harmony.

Unlike Uncharted, TLOU2 takes itself completely seriously. It's a cinematic drama through and through. So it is actually clear that the characters are not equipped with adventurous moves or weapons. Everything is perfectly reduced, the skills of the characters fit very well into the setting.

The choice of skills and combat items are well thought out. Sneaking and shooting must be skillfully used to withstand larger waves of opponents. Every now and then you get a mostly nice introduction in a very well built-in tutorial. Over time, the fighting techniques should be mastered so that the more difficult opponents can be stopped at battlefields. To put it simply, there are only three game mechanics: Stealth - Fight - Explore.

Most sections are perfectly balanced. It always remains breathtakingly exciting. The gameplay is ideal for perfectionists because, with a little practice, the character can be moved damn realistic creeping, crawling, running, throwing, hitting and shooting across the field, so that everything looks like an action-packed stealth film. The movements especially during the fight, the change between weapons and the many possibilities to use hiding places and cover give the combat system a big variation. I really enjoyed facing all kinds of opponents in combat.
