If you, like me, are a fan of the previous game, then please do yourself a favour and DO NOT play this one. It will tarnish your memory of even the previous game, which was a masterpiece. It isn’t even about the fact that it literally destroys your beloved characters from the previous game, but also because it is completely devoid of any charm that the storytelling of the previous one had. The plot here is so scatter-brained that I still haven’t found a way to summarise it. They just went with whatever had the most shock value in THAT specific moment. And that means characters will switch personalities and motives back and forth like a yo-yo. It doesn’t matter if it’s unnatural for a character to behave a certain way, if it provides a shock value, they’ll put it in. So don’t expect to form any kind of a meaningful relationship with any character (including a certain new one they keep forcing the players to play as, even though audience has no connection with said character, and the parts where you play as them seem extremely tedious) because even by the end of the game, you wouldn’t know exactly who they are as a person. Heck even Ellie, the main character of this game! The only form of connection you will feel with the character is because she was important to you in the first game, because in this one she is barely a shadow of her former self. And I won’t even get into all the injustices done to Joel’s character so lets just move on. The gameplay, well its the same old same old. Don’t expect to be blown out of the water in this category either. They did polish it up a bit, but at the end of the day, the combat and stealth aspects are just as they were in the previous game, which is to say, outdated. The graphics are really gorgeous no doubt, but its still not enough to carry the weight of this incredible failure of a game. After all, with the new generation consoles coming out, plus the already state-of-the-art graphics in most AAA titles these days, this isn’t something that’s gonna blow your mind either. So, all in all, bad game. Doesn’t even work as a stand-alone story, because its not memorable or even good, in any sense. Expand

I'm done naughty dog. Perfect addition to 2020. So disappointed. The characters were unrecognisable and acted completely out of character, no choices in what we are forced to do and a silly pandering message at the end. Thanks but no thanks

The game can best be summarized as "misery porn" with graphics so realistic it will give you ptsd. The level of violence in the game is similar to a IRL snuff film. There is also an extremely graphic sex scene that made me want to gouge my eyes out. Neil Druckmann thinks hes Hideo Kojima when hes really just a washed up loser. Amy Henning was the real genius at Naughty Dog. I question if I will ever buy a Naughty Dog game ever again. Please, please do not buy this game. Lets let Naughty Dog know with our wallets we didn't want this and don't want this ever again. The fact that all the gaming press gave it a 10/10 is a joke. Expand

I can tolerate games that play out more like interactive movies, with long, drawn out animations for the sole purpose of "immersion". I myself like to play more narrative driven games when I'm feeling up to it. But when the story comes at the cost of everything else, you better make sure that your plot is worthy of being at the front and center of a 20 hours experience.

    And in this case

But when the story comes at the cost of everything else, you better make sure that your plot is worthy of being at the front and center of a 20 hours experience.

And in this case it is not. This isn't an understatement. The story of this game and it's character are some of the most putrid pieces of "entertainment" that I've laid my eyes upon this year. And the reason becomes quickly apparent as the game progresses.

This isn't a story. There is no vision behind this game. It exists as a political statement and serves no purpose beyond that.

Coming from someone who has enjoyed most of Naughty Dog's works for the past decade and a half, I never thought I'd see the day where they'd destroy the legacy of one of their most popular IP so quickly.

I can turn a blind eye to mediocre cash-grab sequels, but not to all out propaganda

The game causes rejection, boredom, misunderstanding and frustration and anger. Disgusting SJW propaganda, endless inappropriate sex scenes, inappropriate cruelty. Including to the beloved heroes from the previous part, who the hell deserved to leave at least with a little respect. Or did Joel become a kind of sacrificial lamb personifying the hated patriarchy and traditional values?

If this situation sounds stupid to you then uou have a functioning brain and see why this game is generally universally disliked by gamers and fans of the first game as that is thr basic plot of this trashfire. Not beacuse of issues the media would like you to think. The story is an unchecked, **** by Neil. There is a reason allegedly 70% of ND has left due to creative differences since 2013 when the first game was made.

It gets a 1/10 and not a 0 because it is visually stunning and has an amazing soundtrack. But as this is a game not a music video the core product is still fundamentally flawed.

It's sad that the writers could not give them a better script. At times it feels like there could be something more to say that may be profound but all we get is a one liner or a joke that lands but almost ruins the mood the game tries to place you in. Then we get to the story. Single player games rely heavily on story elements. It tries to teach you ba lesson and forces you to hit yourself over the head with its forced morality. The themes it tries to portray are undone by the fact that a player has no agency in the choices thrust upon you. The writers are the puppet masters and your only option is to dance. And at the end they look to you and ask why did you do this. After playing I felt like the message that was being forced upon me did not coincide with the resolution of the game. Things felt contrived and as a result the game stumbled into a cautionary tale neglecting storytelling for pure shock. I would give this game a 4/10 .... but I also have to factor in outside influences in my score. The trailers were deceptive. They implied that some characters had a larger role. -1
Some characters were noticeably dumbed down so that they could make terrible decisions. They did not stay true to their portrayal on the first game. -1
The reviews from critics are congratulatory and defensive to such a controversial game and give glowing reviews to something that as a whole is not well thought out. It gives value to connived storytelling at the cost of upending the expectations of the player. It lauds the developers for bravery yet fails to call them out for forcing the story it wants to tell in such a weird and unnatural way. -1
All in all I hated this experience.

But he dies early in the game for no reason except poor story writing. What is the point of upsetting the fans? What is the point of subverting expections in the worse way possible? My only reaction is to be upset. The ultimate insult is that you have to play with abby and you are pushed to emphatize with her even though she is the ultimate villain. The story - which is the main aspect of that kind of cinematic game - is just the worse possible and told in the worse way possible. I don't event mention the ending. I need a refund. Expand

But unfortunately, the complete disrespect for fans of the first game is remarkable. It is not a continuation, it is just a complete destruction on the meaning of the last game, and everything it represents. I am very sad that the director forced an inclusion without any sense in this game, just to please the SJW who do not play this game. Killing Joel at the beginning of the game was a terrible idea, as the first hours of the game are resumed in drugs, lesbians and the death of a very beloved character. The gameplay is just a run of the mill 3rd person shooter with stealth elements, it gets boring fast and you have to do it for like 20+ hours, and the story is all over the place, from killing off a beloved character of the previous series in the first 2 hours of the game, to forcing you to play as the character that killed the beloved character, to there being no payoff for the game's protagonist in the end.
