Cannot believe the hate this game is getting! It is undoubtably a masterpiece, everything about it: the story, writing, characters, graphics, level design, gameplay (if you liked TLoU1 gameplay, this is similar but majorly improved and much more polished).

I just beat it and honestly feel like this holds a place among the all-time greatest single player. I feel like I was a little luke warm on the narrative to begin with (I had the game spoilt for me prior to release, but turns out so many of the leaks were either BS or totally out of context) but as the game went on I feel like there story just gets more and more compelling. I think some people just need to hate this game. I’ve beaten TLoU1 at least 10 times, it’s one of my all time favourite games, and this game is, to me, vastly better in every respect. Look forward to many more play through sin the future. contectcontext)

The story is truly something I've never experienced in a game, the basic premise isn't new but the way it uses this premise and changes it in a way not often seen in mainstream media especially games. The basic premise is that it's a revenge story and this is nothing new, however what is new is that this game doesn't treat you like a badass for killing these people, it shines a light on the cruelty and negative impact violence has on people and demonstrates perfectly the impact & issues revenge killing ultimately brings. It also helps the gameplay is superior to the first, it's not a major overhaul or anything but just the quality of life improvements (such as the bows improved aiming) and the smoother gameplay (dodging is a huge part of making the gameplay flow a lot better than the first) make a huge difference to the overall experience. To end, both in the story & technical department, The Last of Us Part II is amazing and I would recommend everyone play it for themselves.

"An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind"

"Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves"

"No matter what, you keep finding something to fight for" We leave the first part of The Last of Us with that quote, and this masterpiece of a sequel just builds upon that but in a more complex way, and from different perspectives that could have been a hard pill to swallow for some.

In the beginning of part 2, we get to see our beloved characters living a somewhat normal life, with newfound companions and stories that will slowly unfold as the game progresses through meaningful flashbacks. This was a glimpse into the last four years of their lives, a relatively peaceful life that Joel and Ellie have found for themselves. We as the player, step into the story as all of that is about to fall apart. The game does an amazing job of making us feel what the characters are feeling. Sadness, rage, anger, a thirst for revenge. We feel a sense of betrayal as we watch our protagonist get his life beaten out of him, by someone we were playing as just mere minutes ago. We watch him breathe his last breath, through Ellie's eyes, which made it all the more painful and near unbearable to watch. Ellie looks around the room of Joel's killers, we do too. We embark on our journey ready to kill every last one of them.

The story starts off linear, seemingly a revenge story set in this dystopian world we all know and love. We are accompanied by Dina, a level-headed character who deeply cares for and loves Ellie, and who is equally as capable when it comes to combat. The pair get to explore new destinations that are beyond beautiful, despite the destruction the outbreak has caused. The set pieces and locations are a sight to behold, and Naughty Dog has done such an amazing job of making it feel like we are exploring an open world, even though it isn't one. The sets are designed to make you want to explore every corner and every room in order to not miss a single collectible or dialogue that might be a great addition to the narrative. We fight bigger, badder infected that are more rewarding to defeat, and factions that feel more human than AI, and therefore harder to kill than those in the previous installment of the Last of Us. And with every build-up of tense encounters, we are rewarded with the most beautiful, somewhat poignant storytelling of Joel and Ellie's relationship that would almost guarantee some tears to be shed.

As we continue on with our gameplay, it is not until the halfway mark that we realize that this is in fact not a linear story line nor a revenge story—when we once again get to play as Abby. At first we're conflicted. Why am I playing as Joel's cold-hearted killer? How long does this have to go for? What happens in the theater confrontation? I don't want this! Take me back to Ellie! The anger we felt during the prologue rises back up again. I admit, I let her get destroyed by clickers numerous times just to satisfy my anger and frustration. But after a shameful amount of suicide attempts as Abby, I trudged on, eager to find out what kind of story is about to unfold. And boy was I pleasantly surprised.

We get to know the stories behind our prologue "killers", albeit short for some of them, Naughty Dog still manages to give us a glimpse of who these characters are through superb acting and dialogue. I was particularly fond of Manny, who I very much despised during the prologue. I found myself in shock when he gets shot in the head, by Tommy nonetheless, through an epic run-and-duck encounter that's arguably one of the most mind-blowing parts of the game.

As the journey progresses on Abby's side of the story, I found myself fighting the urge to root for her until I finally surrendered. I loved her story arc. I loved her. I loved Lev. I was witnessing the beginning of an amazing companionship, reminiscent to what we experienced with Joel and Ellie during the first part of the Last of Us, without it feeling repetitive. I was in awe, not just with the story but with what it made me feel simply by giving me a new perspective. It was phenomenal.

On the two encounters where the two protagonists get to fight each other, I struggled to let the fight go on. The game makes you feel the consequences of their actions by letting you participate in their combat, it was soul-crushing, and it was intended to be that way. That's what makes this game a solid masterpiece.

The final flashback is the most emotional one yet. Much like the rest of the game, it is all in the details with this final scene. From the crack in Ellie's voice as she says "but I would like to try" and Joel visibly holding back tears, to the emotional and physical distance between these two characters as they talked. It was our beloved Joel and Ellie in their most vulnerable, with a dialogue that perfectly concluded the first game's ending. It was painful yet beautiful, subtle yet impactful. A bittersweet conclusion to an exceptional story, and I expected no less from the Last of Us.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have to give my 2 cents to the rating here, although I can't add very much new stuff. For me, it is truly a miracle how these good reviews came here. I had a very hard time finishing the game and no, it's not because of the violence, horror and also not because of Joel's death (everybody excepted him to die... but the way it happened was still to soon and illogical ). What Neil Druckman tried, didn't work for me at all. No matter how stupid and evil Ellie got, I was on her team (Loyalty and stuff you know). And in addition to that, Abbys Story had me hate her even more. I saw absolutely nothing nice about her or regrets. In the end I felt I wasted 25h of my life feeling depressed because I waited 7 years and even was looking forward playing the sequel and I really thought: naughty dog never let me down. They can handle Abby in a way I will understand. But no, just ruin everything you liked about the first part and write a story so that it makes you feel you are watching a soap opera. But a cheap one. Really? So many plotholes? Mixing the terms vaccine and cure to one so you don't understand what exactly joel **** up. Still don't believe a cure / vaccine by the fireflys would have been a good thing in this world... Also the map drop, countless surprises that don't develop... they just happen... ah I really don't want to think about it anymore. The other bad reviews make a good job already. The overall story, what it wanted to say in the end is good. Don't get me wrong. But while I was playing I did not understand how the decisions developed. And THIS IS MY BIGGEST PROBLEM. And a lot of people have the same problem. It's just not a smooth transfer from 1 to 2. Expand

But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
