Last of Us 2 is a beautiful and tragic game. It is a piece of art that is poorly executed and left me deeply dissatisfied by the end. I honestly do not want to play it again after I finished it. I honestly do not want to play it again after I finished it. If hating what happens in a game and making you feel terrible was truly the intention of this game, then Naughty Dog hit it out of the park. I do not have a problem with the decisions of the main plot points, they were bold choices and I do enjoy experiencing story driven games where the events are predetermined, where you are meant to experience the story in the way that the developers chose for you to experience it. That experience can be positive or negative, tragic, horrific or whatever as long as the game has an impact that is justified and leaves you satisfied. The experience of this game did not leave me satisfied. When you come to the conclusion of the game and you immediately know that you don’t want to go through this experience again it is a failed game that fails in the very thing it is supposed to be, a game. It fails at being a game that costs as much as it does because you will never get the value that you paid out of this game. This experience did not justify its existence for me. Too harsh? I finished the game three days ago.. if you haven’t played it yet.. go for it and then you decide. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Graffic is grate, physics is grate but some twists are horrible like situation with transgender, strange pregnancy etc. Guys, does people try to stay a live in appocaliptic world or they just think what gender they are and who should they sleep with? Honestly, the gameplay is decent enough. Nothing ground breaking but very comfortable. There are some super long side quests that sort of inflate the games size.

Bought this despite the leaks and you can totally tell that this game is no 10/10 masterpiece. really sad to see the media shilling so hard for this when the actual users are giving it way less.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay... here we go.

Summary: What is... even the story, the trailers and advertising clearly deceived so many of us that I'm actually baffled by the Gall of Naughty Dog.

    Characters:
Ellie: She is pretty brutal, I give her that. Her character arc climax is strangely at the very end of the story. When I saw it happen the first thing that I said in my head is "Oh now you realized this is all **** up." Then gives us a rather bitter end to the story of TLOU2. We get it, reality is **** But when you try to put realism over the story, it's less of a story and more of an in your face message. Which is the root of my issue with the whole story. Anyways, the best part of the game is Ellie's flashbacks with Joel.

Joel: Loved by fans... his plot is almost disgraceful on how they handled it. The teasers and trailers clearly show he is supposed to be alive, but instead, we get deception. Like I know advertisers protect their stories but THIS IS STRAIGHT UP DECEPTION. The cutscenes we see from Joel are flashbacks. The scene where he says "You'll think you're going to do this on your own?" It is actually from Jesse! I am actually pissed about this, I paid a crap ton of money for another adventure with Joel and Ellie. But I instead get crapped on because they had to subvert expectations. This is a videogame not an M. Night Shyamalan movie!

Dina: She is... kinda plain actually. The only memorable part with her as Ellie is the weed scene and music scene. At times when she talks to Ellie, it's kinda as if they weren't really a couple. I actually forgot at one point that Dina was Ellie's partner. Character arc? Um... she... hmph.

Jesse: Damn I really liked this guy but they had to give him such an NPC cutscene death. It didn't even surprise me. I was already numb from the unlikeable storytelling. That's bad if you cannot provoke a strong emotion out of me (Which by the way it's not hard to do), your story is really bad to do so.

Manny: The same situation with Jesse, but the worse part is that bullet like... erased his character's existence and was barely ever mentioned again. Actually even Jesse suffers the same thing.

Abby: Okay mega huge problem with her. They presented her really bad. She claims she cares about people who rescue her... but she murders Joel still? She's a new character that is already presented as an antagonist super early. Like what the **** you completely ruined her chances of being liked at all. ND failed to grab our trust for Abby and left us bitter through the WHOLE STORY. The worst part is, it's like they gave Abby the best parts of the story while Ellie's side is superlinear. The established a character than I don't even care about.

Jerry: Wasn't he black... they race changed him.

    Gameplay:

It has been improved, not going to lie. But it's mostly the same as the first game, run and hide and strike with little resources. Gunplay and brutalities are pretty on par with the first game.
Main gripes, is when enemies call out their friend's names or pets. Honestly, I don't give a **** dude. If you shoot at me I don't care if your dog is named pancakes I will ****ing kill you both for attacking me first. Secondly when they are like "oh wait don't kill me". They'll always try to fight back afterwards, yeah real dynamic. Also, where is the friendly survivor groups, does every person I meet HAVE TO BE ENEMIES. The only thing I remember outside the town is the prisoners that I rescued. But that's a cutscene, give me a moral dilemma if I should raid a neutral survivor group or interact with them so it feels more real. THAT'S HOW YOU HUMANIZE PEOPLE.

    Verdict: 3/10

The gameplay is nice, but the story is like taking IP Man's machinegun punches to my cock.
I don't mind the LGBT representation, I don't mind Joel dying. But the way they presented the whole story is just, awful. The character arcs lead nowhere cause they kinda ALL DIE. The ending was pointless like you might as well finish Abby off too. You already killed hundreds of people!

The graphics are great aswell as the attention to detail, gameplay is nice because it innovates from the first but doesn’t stray to far from the original but I think the story was disappointing. If you started with Abby’s sections and Ellie and Joel flashbacks the game could of been better then but I couldn’t sympathise with Abby because it’s depicts her as the villain but then ten switches her to the victim it doesn’t move me. I’m fine with Ellie and Dina being lesbians and Lev being exiled actually fells like that would happen with a cult but it just doesn’t make me feel like I should care for some deaths like Jesse, Owen or anyone else because there isn’t enough time with them to fully develop with me. I’ve played the game through about two times now and I have found that the story is very fun at some parts but why I give it this score is because the story starts as a revenge tale but gets stale halfway through the game. And the ending makes the whole story and bloodshed pointless.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's gonna be sort of difficult to sort out my thoughts here.

Positives: Beautiful graphics, voice acting, sound design, and lighting.
Negatives: There's probably at least one flaw with every other element of the game.

Regarding Joel's death, the storyline definitely could’ve been set up differently. Calling it a plot twist is giving it too much credit. It came out of nowhere, only happened because of a coincidence, and didn’t make sense with the characters involved. The only parts of the story I fondly remember are the flashbacks with Joel.

The writers seemed to have forgotten what made the first game so remarkable, the relationships between all the characters, especially Joel and Ellie. The story would’ve been virtually the same if they found something else to preface the revenge plot, and the player would actually be satisfied by getting the story and relationship the trailers suggested they would get.

Additionally, no one wanted to see the story from Abby’s perspective because we saw her do something horrific before we ever sympathized with her. Maybe if they switched it up a little, mixed her sections in with Ellie’s, instead of ripping us out of the story we paid for/expected for 10 hours of playing the character that bludgeoned a man in front of his brother and surrogate daughter, the player could've sympathized with Abby without force.

Abby's story isn't even boring. It just rips us out of the expected story and drops us with a character we don’t sympathize with. Plus the fighting was already getting really repetitive, almost no one wanted to sit through the same journey from a different perspective with no breaks or differing fighting styles. You have to work to sympathize with Abby, something you shouldn’t have to do with a well-written story. The character was introduced as someone who kills her saviors, then you’re just expected to forget about it and fall for the blatant “feel bad for her” narrative with her dog, that zebra, and the flashbacks with her dad and Owen.

Also, everyone knew Joel was an antihero. Everyone knew he was going to die, and knew he at least partially deserved it. The issue I have with how they handled it was that they did it too early/without enough care towards the character’s values and instincts. They butchered a beloved character's values for a revenge plot that didn't even have a satisfying ending. Naughty Dog can be smart, they could’ve thought of a better way to set up the revenge plot and still have a good game.

The pacing was horrible. There was too little actual plot to stretch it out to 25 hours, so they filled in the holes with horrifically repetitive combat. They came up with very few puzzles and scarcely any unique fight sequences making every fight sequence fall short of interesting. The AI is smarter, but still quite dull and easy to fight. Fighting infected was unbearable, boring, and every kill seemed to be the same. It was so much more interesting to fight the humans. Let me repeat, bad zombies in a *zombie game*. Every time I was thrown into the dark or heard a clicker, I sighed because I knew I'd have to painstakingly kill every infected for the hundredth time. Game mechanics have barely improved since the first game, seven years ago.

They treated every character like they were as expendable as a piece of paper. Nobody reacts when their friends die, not Abby when she watches Manny get shot, not Ellie when Jesse is murdered in front of her. I'll say it again, they forgot what made the first game special, the *relationships*.

    Final Thoughts:

I came in with an open mind, excited to refamiliarize myself with the relationships and world I fell in love with during the first game. I had avoided spoilers thus far, and was coming in blind without any outside opinions. I was let down profoundly. It seems as if they came in with all these fractions of fight scenes, deaths, sympathetic moments, designs of maps, game mechanics, and other elements, decided on a 25-hour playthrough time, and then mashed them all together haphazardly. The game uses your love for the first game and trust that they'd do right by it to manipulate you into spending your money.

I will always be fond of the first game, and there are some moments that are alright to sit through in the second. I even found myself wanting to go back to specific fight scenes because they brought something fresh to the table (scenes with sniffer dogs, fighting seraphites in the foliage, trying to escape the incredibly detailed school building in Seattle, etc.). The concept of traveling across the city throughout the duration of the game could've been a brilliant concept.

But the game doesn't have any value of replayability, and the characters' decisions, behavior, and the overall plot makes me regret staying hopeful and preordering instead of just reading the spoilers and watching a playthrough.
