Naughty Dog ruined a Masterpiece. The game is more disappointing and bad than i was expecting. I didn't want to play anymore but I forced myself to end this game. In the end, it wasn't worth it for me to buy this game because i'm more disappointed than satisfied. The end of part 2 is horrible and a huge flop for me. There are more negative than positive things i could say about Part 2. This definitely ruined my day and life. Expand

    Story, The ugly: 0
I see what they were going with it but they flopped terribly in the execution it's infuriating...I mean who tf wrote this? A teenage intern? I really have nothing more to say without spoiling...there is a ton of other games with silly stories and who reads this must have seen a movie or played a game with bad writing that goes nowhere but this time the story was perfect and the sequel ruins everything (take Game of Thrones season 8 as an example)...
To put it in one sentence: compared to the first one it gets a zero from me nothing more sadly.

    Gameplay, The bad: 6
The gameplay is the same with some refinements...it still is clunky and last-gen just looks cooler so a 6 I guess...

    Graphics, The good: n/a
The graphics are very good...I really don't care though..oh character design is somehow worse than the first one...

The last of us gets a 3 from me...oof it's physically painful to say this out loud

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I finished the game yesterday and had been waiting in anticipation for this game for months. The hype was real. Naughty Dog has the reputation of making magic with video games and I'd hoped that TLOU2 would be a masterpiece too. The game starts off slow with rustic guitar piece all familiarising you with the setting that this is based in. Humanity has survived and they have build settlements with electricity and other niceties, life seems to go on within such settlements oblivious to the ongoings of the outer world. Jackson is one such community. Joel and Ellie live her with other support cast (Tommy, Dina and Jesse). They are estranged owing to what happened in the first part. Yet they have some fondness for each other. Joel is killed off almost immediately by Abby in spite of the fact that he just saved her (Motive : Abby's father was killed by Joel while trying to rescue Ellie from the hospital). Yet I'd have preferred some empathy for a man that just saved her life. Also it was anti climactic to see Joel being so naive and walk into a trap. This sets Ellie on crazy revenge path. They (Ellie, her girlfriend Nina, Tommy and Jesse) go to Seattle separately and start knocking WLF numbers down. WLF is the group that Abby is part of. They kill of Abby's friends and this ticks Abby off and she kills few of Ellie's and just about the time she is to kill Ellie (15 hours into the game), we are set onto Abby's flash back (Frustrating). The game now forces us to relive what Abby was doing for three days when Ellie was killing her friends. This is a solid ten hour nightmare with a person that you have been bought to hate. Extremely inconsequential stuff with random NPC's added (Lev and Yara), you do fetch quests for them, forge relationship with Owen (Teenage sweetheart who is married) and manage to survive while being an outcast from WLF. Also by the end of ten hours you don't start empathizing with Abby but are rather focused on getting over the tedium and completing the game. The gameplay mechanics while upgraded (jump, prone, rope usage etc.) are nothing to write home about and the shooting is exactly the way it was - clunky. The animations are fabulous and so is the art direction, the game looks like every last ounce of PS4 Pro's graphical prowess has been extracted There are wide open spaces which are awe inspiring and beautiful. You'd be able to visualise the nature in all its glory. However every destination needs you to enter a dingy dark building filled with infected, use the environment in some twisted way or fight random group of enemies. I used to dread when the game required me to go somewhere which was more than two blocks away. The stealth works just till it doesn't and the enemy AI is laughable. Now since you have put 20 odd hours (10 of them as Abby), you really need a fantastic climax to make it worth it. But to our dismay once we are bought back to present in the theater, nothing of that sort happens and an ancillary character Lev belonging to SCARS (WLF's nemesis) clan (had saved Abby's life) requests Abby to not kill Dina & Ellie and Abby agrees. Next off we are shown that Ellie and Dina are living the perfect farm life with Dina's son keeping them company (The game doesn't end here too).Tommy who miraculously survived getting shot, stirs the hornets nest by stating that he knows where Abby is. This sets off Ellie on one another mission (Noooooo). The game by this point feels drab and dragged by 10 hours. Ellie rescues Abby only to state that she can't let her go and they fight and finally when Ellie has the upper hand she decides to forgive Abby and move on. Now if this is what she had to do why did she make us go through the pain of playing for twenty five hours while convincing us that she'd kill every one of them. Where this morality came from at the most inopportune moment. The game has no real story arc and you'll not connect with any of the characters including Ellie. The game tries too hard to please everyone and also be a maverick/trend setter but forgets the core which got us to love part 1 ; that is story telling and relatable characters, everything else is just a fancy garnish. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved TLOU and went in this game blind and didn’t look at any leaks. I also didn’t believe how bad the Story was based on the leaks and fan reactions. That is how much I loved TLOU. I gave every benefit of doubt to them believing that the master piece they made will continue I mean uncharted never disappointed me.

But. First a little rant before the review.

Joel dies in the first hour of the game. The man I waited to play as for this long was denied to me. The man we all fell in love with in TLOU. But His death serves nothing but a shallow plot line of revenge which could have been anyone else but Joel and it would still have worked. I mean just kill Dina she served no real story reason in the game. The story.

The story was very shallow and full of plot holes. It’s about Ellie looking for revenge for Joel’s death. That’s it. And guess what, she does not take revenge for Joel’s death at the end by letting go of the person who killed Joel for no reason. Yes half way through the game you will change too play as the killer Abby for around 10 hours trying to show the bond with the group that “really hated” Joel which you won’t see in this story. You then go as Abby to do a side quest saving some children which again serves no actual meaning for the overall story as they become irrelevant the moment they were introduced. But when it changes back to Ellie, only the player experienced the 10hours of game and story with Abby, there should not have been a change of heart for Ellie to suddenly not take her revenge! She has nothing on Abby, she literally met her for 10 minutes and then decided killing her was not right. I would also like to point out that Joel’s death was very out of his character trusting some random stranger out in the woods which he made very clear he never did in the first game. I really hated the story, abhorred it. Two female leads with one that was forcibly shoved to our face even though we never asked for it. I could go on how bad the story is but there are reviews that go much more in-depth than me so I’ll leave it there.

    Gameplay.

The gameplay feels exactly the same as the first game. Yes some upgrades are done to the gameplay. But, the overall experience is exactly the same. It is still very hard to aim properly with your gun, the hand to hand combat is still as shallow button mashing with occasional QTE prompt to dodge. They added a jump button which also serves no purpose as all the actual part that need navigating is still very automatic. You can’t grab higher ledges cos of you jump, you can’t jump over stuff because you can jump . I pretty much forgot about the jump button Zero minutes into the game and was surprised half way through the game when I accidentally pressed the wrong button and jumped whiling fighting a horde clickers. Oh yes. The enemies do not change much. I can’t remember exactly what 1 had but this game still has the same trope with some dogs and new silent enemies introduced. Doesn't change the 25 hour experience in much anyway.

There is jarringly a lack of environmental puzzles also. So the game revolves around getting from A to B with not much in the middle. Some small areas are more opened up for you to explore but by the time your hoarding the Nth house, it also gets boring and you realize very fast that there is only so much there is in any building that’s not in the main road. A water bottle, tape, pills and the same thing again.

I did get bored half way through the game and just wanted to rush to the end so I was finished with the game and this kind of experience is awful to have in a game.

    Graphics and sound.

This is where it shines. The environment and sound is absolutely gorgeous nothing to say about this much. You will love it if it’s for the music or graphics. It is probably the best looking PS4 game to date. I’m surprised they could make everything so detailed.

    Conclusion.

This game made the worst fears of fans into reality. They kill the main protagonist and shove some random person to force you to like with very little character development (forgot to mention the whole game goes through only 3 days ingame time). Your struggle is irrelevant through out the game as the ending denies all that you were playing for. If this is what SJW stands for in gaming I’m afraid for the future of gaming. Rant over.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. No game deserves zero points. The sound and music the graphics the animation are all amazing. But thats about it.
Everything the first game has built, was ruined in this game. No body cares about the character sexuality. its written well then no problem. But that is not the case here. Joel deserved a better death. Characters act out of characters is the problem. Lets look at Joel, someone who does not trust anybody, it took an entire game for him and Ellie trust eachother and love eachother.

Joel who could sens trouble miles away. Suddenly is surrounded with strangers and is stupid enough to give his accrual name? Are you kidding me. Gets killed by a ugly looking woman. Abby whos arms are bigger then my legs, and in fact her arms where smaller at the Paris trailer. Somehow it wasnt enough.

After she killes joel. I hated her. And then i was forced to play her to kill Ellie? And El is the now the antagonist?

This story could have gone much better. And sins this is a story based game, it only deserves my generous highest rating.

Characters that were cunning killing machines in the first game were turned into bumbling baffons. The game is full of shallow dialogue unmemorable characters, who are forgotten as soon as they leave the screen. The climax of the story only works if you care about both of the main characters; sadly the game doesn't provide anything meaningful that would make you actually care about Abbie.
We get so see a few beautiful Ellie-Joel moments in flashbacks (Ellie and Joel in the museum is easily the best part of the game). Sadly these flashbacks don't make the player feel better about TLoU2, since they only serve as a reminder of what this game could have been .

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First I'll start with the pros. The graphics are amazing there is no denying that. And the gameplay while being nothing special is still pretty good, if you like the gameplay of TLoU 1 you will like 2. But aside from a few other superficial positives that's about it. The cons on the other hand are devastating, I get what they were going for with their anti-revenge narrative but they completely counteract that by having you mercilessly kill dozens of people to find Abby without a second thought only to say violence is bad when you find Abby herself. In the end the point comes across more as it's okay to kill all of the people around the person who wronged you or a loved one, but that person themselves is off limits. Because of this ending the player is left unsatisfied as nothing was ever really accomplished during the game. Expand

Also, this review is a year in the making. I unfortunately was unable to leave a review when the game game out because all negative reviews were locked. Loved TLOU1 and Left Behind. My two favorite games ever. TLOU2 is a complete departure from the first entry. The good: For the most part, Ellie and Dina had a cute relationship. It was nice to see Ellie happy post - Joel. The flashback scene at the museum with Joel and Ellie made me cry. Very beautiful. The graphics are phenomenal and the gameplay is, well TLOU gameplay. These games are story driven, but you’re not playing Arkham Knight or God of War here. It is what it is. The bad: depressing. It’s not edgy. The story is horribly paced. It uses every plot device in the book to make its point, and literally completely ignores any type of character development from the first game so that the story can push in the direction the writers think it needs to go. Forcing us to play as a new character didn’t work in Metal Gear solid 2, and it surely doesnt work here. Abby is given every dirty trick in the book to try to convince the viewer to sympathize with her but it doesn’t work. Playing with cute dogs? Wow ok. Then later in her arc she’s literally brutally murdering her friends because she met a little boy (from the enemy faction no less) a few hours earlier. There’s no payoff to the story. They should’ve left Joel and Ellie out of this game and subbed in completely néw characters if this is what they were going to do. Joel is dead, Ellie is figuratively dead (absolute no where for her character to go in a 3rd installment), Tommy is dead, Jesse is dead, Dina ran away, and so basically every trace of the first game was buried in this game. It’s horrible fan service and the reason why this game didn’t sell well (Sony/ND isn’t even listing the total sales since release because they’re embarrassing). The positive reviews were bought by ND. If you really want to see what people think about this game, watch play throughs from YouTubers. There’s no reason to give this game or any Last of Us IP title a dime of your money ever again. ND and Sony ruined one of the best video games ever. This was so bad I’m actually switching to Xbox when i get a gen 5 console.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
