This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let start with the positives. Props to the animation and art team for doing a great job enhancing the game to groundbreaking quality. The rope physics are amazing. Second, gameplay is a definite step-up from the last game but not by much. I love the little map you pull out. I also like that dogs can sniff you out and that enemies are more human. It's way more brutal, and the gore porn would've been justified if empathy was a central theme, but it isn't. Still, it's impressive that you can choose how you want to torture/kill your enemies. Music really had its moments during Joel and Ellie flashbacks. Otherwise, it's forgettable.
Now for bad: the plot and message of revenge wasn't bad; they just really should've executed it better. I don't mind if characters die; as long as they get deserving deaths that respect their legacy, it can be a great thing. But no, the dev had to spit on Joel (which he actually does in the game) by making him dumb for plot convenience, torturing him slow in front of his brother and daughter, and while she screams for it to stop, kill him, and let Ellie and Tommy live. This is within the first 2 hours of the game. I don't know what else could be as malicious to fans as that. And who cares about the cure anymore; let's make it a revenge story that isn't satisfying. Forgive the killer who slow tortured your dad in front of you. it's not that the revenge trope is bad. This game just fails at it. You're supposed to empathize with Abby but she's not worth the forgiveness. Oh you feel bad about two kids you left behind? Tell that to the thousands of orphans you've made from killing Scars. Tell that to a father you slowly tortured and killed in front of his daughter and brother. Oh you gave Ellie a chance and she wasted it? You had a chance and wasted it. At least Joel made it quick for your dad, a single shot to the head. You decide to take it so much further, even after he saves your life. She kills without thinking and gets her friends killed and/or traumatized. Not to mention, she had sex with her friend's husband who is pregnant with their child. Let's also not forget the game forces you to play this ungrateful brat for the last half and forces you to fight Ellie. I still wish she died but no, the game doesn't let you kill her and here's the best part: I feel just as much animosity toward Ellie. Wtf happened to her character from the first game? She hates violence; she's empathetic; she was the light in the darkness for me AND Joel. Now, she's a sociopathic monster. She's like "oh god, I tortured someone!" when first, you would've never done that and second, you literally are committing a genocide along the way. Does WOLF soldier #237's life matter? Y'know, the one you set on fire? Or maybe the one you shot the leg off of who screamed until they bled out and died? This violence is bad agenda just doesn't work in this world. If you really wanted me to feel bad for the people I'm killing, don't force me to kill them! It's not effective to be all like "oh you took all these lives. You're the monster," when the game didn't give me a choice.
The political agenda is also just so pandering. As a bisexual female myself, I love that Ellie is lesbian and it felt natural in the DLC. I just wish they made her and Dina that natural. Their chemistry is a one night stand. Wasn't Dina really flirty? Why would she suddenly want to settle? Because Ellie needs a gf for the plot. And not only is she unrelatable, but she's an idiot too. Don't have sex without protection. If you do, expect you'll get pregnant and don't come along on a journey. Now, she's a dead weight, and there's also some stupid message about "pregnant women can fight too" with Dina and Mel. There's a reason pregnant women aren't allowed to fight: it's so idiots like these two won't hurt their baby. They're trying to be strong and independent, but you're just being irresponsible. Let's also not forget the tragic story of all the male characters killed off for "plot convenience" AKA make the world women-only: Joel, Manny, Owen, but the worst was definitely Jesse. He knocked up Dina, and they kill him without any mourning. It just feels like "No strings attached now! You can be the father Ellie!" That really soured the farm part for me, although it was really cute. And I liked Jesse a lot. He had better sense than anybody and was merely a victim of a love triangle with two stupid people. The exact situation can be applied to Yara's death too. Congratz, you have a pet Lev, Abby. Your dream came true! As a bisexual female, the only LGBTQ+ representation I will take is Lev. All the other female leads are either killing machines and/or irresponsible biggots.

The only reason my rating is so high is because artists, animators, and gameplay designers obviously put their all into it. They shouldn't be discounted because the story was so god-awfully done. Good job guys, and writers, the LGBTQ+ community isn't that easy to suck up to.

The game tries to force the player to empathize with characters without any charisma, making you play with a character that is already hateful since the beginning of the game, not to mention the horrible, disappointing and meaningless end of the game.
Which was to be expected since a good part of the team that produced the first one, and even the director and one of the creators did not return to the sequel.
That all added up, plus the swindle of Nauthy Dog, who has been cheating the games with interviews, and fake trailers, in which they replaced Joel of the past, and Jesse for the Skin of Joel of the present, leading fans to believe that the character would accompany Ellie on her journey, which does not happen in the final version.
In summary: The Last of Us Part II is a disappointment, for those who were really fans of the first, and waited 7 years for a sequel to match.

After getting to about the middle of the story line and getting another perspective I started to understand the negativity in most reviews. And I sadly can't say that it was only for a little while that I was disappointed. I have since even stopped playing the game as it ruins the legacy of The Last of Us Part 1 (the stories i've heard). At this moment in time I will not be resuming my journey on there until some things have either been taken out or modified. In my honest opinion, a real shame as it really started of quite enjoyable, and unlike what some said I was even starting to build a connection to the characters.
Naughty Dog if you read this, please look back at what you've developed and consider some changes for the better as right now there's a few things that I consider game ruining/breaking.
Having said that, I still think there's a chance at redemption if some aspects are changed/tweaked (most notably Abby and the need to connect to her)

The Last of Us (2013) was one of the best games I have ever played in my life, hands down. It always felt like more of a movie than a game, because of how well written it was, with the initially reluctant partnership of Joel and Ellie, the ups and downs, the wise crack cheesy jokes, the environmental storytelling, and the father & daughter bond that they shared and developed throughout their journey. The progression and character development that took place was truly something special that cemented these two as one of gaming’s iconic duos.

The Last of Us II (2020) does not have the same deep emotional connection between any of its characters and it focuses more on preaching personal politics of its developers (and one absolutely out-of-touch consultant), rather than crafting an interesting, competent story with established characters. What you end up with is simplified, petty, revenge plot, that does not break new ground or take any risks.

I’ll get the good stuff out of the way first. Naughty Dog is incredible when it comes to crafting atmospheric games with excellent audio, the wilderness of Jackson, and the streets of Seattle are an absolute master craft in environmental design and graphical quality, not unlike the first game, but certainly enhanced to a stunning level. I also have no complaints with Gustavo and his competence with crafting an excellent soundtrack that fits the dreary, post-apocalyptic setting.

Where do I begin with the bad? There is about 15 hours of walking around with fluffy dialogue thrown in while you explore an empty landscape to find a few extra crafting materials, where you end up in a gunfight or infected encounter that you will try and stealth your way through, but ocassionally fail so that a cutscene or set piece can play out. Rinse and repeat.

This game does nothing new, it has identical gameplay mechanics to the first game (with a few Uncharted mechanics thrown in) which, while that may not seem like a bad thing, makes the game rely heavily on its narrative to differentiate its experience from its beloved predecessor. The problem is, its narrative and character development are subpar at best, and downright awful at worst.

The story tries to make you take it seriously, but after a couple hours of gameplay, you realize that this game has forced you into a standard and contrived revenge plot that you have seen 1000 times before. The back half of the game has you playing as Abby, who regardless of what she has gone through, I have zero attachment or sympathy for, and again, only to jump back to Ellie, who I am now starting to dislike? Who thought this plot was a good idea seriously?

Anita clearly came in and made sure that all the diversity checkboxes were hit, white men are incompetent, all the females have no physically attractive characteristics, and to mention bigotry and fascism wherever possible. Though I’m sure Neil had most of this setup already. You pile this crap on top of the way employees were treated, Sony’s censorship of Youtubers who discussed leaks, and add in an incoherent, generic story… you realize that there’s not much here that you haven’t seen or heard (because the leaks were accurate) before.

All of this, culminating in an underwhelming ending that is an absolute slap in the face to everyone who played and loved the first game. Last of Us (2013) DID NOT NEED A SEQUEL. It is an absolute step down from the first game, and gets a 4/10 from me. This is game is an outright travesty, and I'm sure it'll win awards and accolades because of the sales, progressive demeanour, and paid off critics, but you would be a fool to believe that this is anything but another corporate cash grab on an established IP. This is the gaming industry now.

Visually, it's a technical marvel and the artists and engineers should be very proud of their work.

Creatively, it's shallow, and viscerally cruel to anyone who went through and loved the first game. The artists and engineers should be angry their work was wasted on Neil's abject failure of a story. I know a long, detailed review would lend weight or credence to my opinions, but

After 24 hours of all this game has to offer, I couldn't bring myself to play the 2 or so hours I needed to finish. Put simply, it was not an experience I enjoyed. There were pieces of a game I would've liked scattered within the mess of the painstakingly rendered brutality, but those scenes accounted for 2 hours out of the 24 at the absolute most.

The game's problem isn't "SJW propaganda" or anything like that. It has progressive themes, but it's not as in your face about it as many would have you believe. Do I care about the game's progressive choices when I don't enjoy it? No.

The game is the most realistically rendered on the PS4. The amount of detail put into making the environment and characters as visually realized as they are should be commended. Does this save me from how depressing the game is to play? No, but it's a major reason why I could put up with it for so long. Unfortunately, the level of detail was also part of what made it so depressing. Any non-zombie deaths in this game are hard to take part of without completely shutting off your empathy.

There's a similar argument to be made for the sound. It's wonderful in terms of the score and the sounds of all the weapons, but if a non-zombie dies, the game's audio is a huge part of what makes murder so brutal.

The gameplay is similar mechanically to the first game, but the levels are more expansive and the AI are somewhat coordinated. Usually the agency in how you tackle a level would be great, but I could never skip the fights thanks to the confusing, labyrinthian layout of each one.

The story is downright weird. There are times where it's great, but there are more times where the story is predicated on hard-to-believe coincidence or barely existant to begin with. Given how airtight the first game was, I have no clue how this happened.

If Neil Druckmann doesn't want to use the word "fun", fine. But there were too few points where I felt immersed enough to appreciate it, much less have fun. I could play the final parts of the first Last of Us because I was invested in the story. I could understand the character even when I didn't agree with them AND THANKS TO how invested I was, I could see it through. That second part is obviously important somehow, because I could play through what was a way more catastrophic choice in the first game, while in this game the stakes are drastically lower and I've had to put it down for good. The accessibility options are great, though. That's something that's great, and I hope more games do that.

I wish I liked this game. If you think you will, don't let me stop you. But whatever your stance, take your time to consider those with the opposing views. No one's an enemy of anyone here. We just wanna play games, and I think we all forget that sometimes.

Honestly I think if ND wanted to tell a story about vengeance they should have made Abby the main character from the get go and make her hate/kill someone else(Not Joel and Ellie) it wouldn’t have been that hard change it, Make it an anthology series, rather than use Ellie and Joel as Marketing just to destroy thier story

The story was horribly cliched, none of the context made any sense at all. You kill almost 30 people on your way to get to Abby and then let her go. Dialogues were amateur at best. The ending was non sensical, the story just pretended to be deep and edgy. The pacing is unbearably slow so much so that it is actually boring at times and frustrating. No improvements at all in the gameplay from the first part. Adding a jump button is not an improvement in my opinion. Overall not recommended.

I didn't really want to write a review, but I don't want people to think that my review is part of any "review bombing" as this is my genuine and personal opinion of this game after having to sit through over 20 hours of it.

it's a horrible sequel that completely destroys the characters and all the build-up from the first game. It doesn't matter how good the graphics, gameplay, music and all the other technical aspects are, when the story is so unbelievable, unimmersive and riddled with inconsistencies and plot holes. A wise person once said that a good story can save bad art, but good art can't save a bad story. And that should really be the slogan for TLOU2.

It's a Naughty Dog game, and although 70% of its staff has left including the incredibly talented Amy Hennig and Bruce Straley, you can pretty much expect it to LOOK like a masterpiece. And it does. However, take any 10 minute clip from any part of the game and I'll show you 2 plot holes, 4 inconsistencies and overall just lazy and sloppy writing.

Nearly every single piece of dialogue made me think "well, that's dumb" and nearly every action sequence was riddled with plot armor and just straight up stupidity. For instance when Ellie and another person drives their car into the water and instead of just swimming right out through the gaping hole where her car door used to be, it was ripped off earlier, they struggle to get through the driver's side window. What the hell? How was this not pointed out by ANYONE? There are so many stupid details and it just completely breaks any sort of credibility or depth this game has, if it even has any.

I praised the first game so much that people started getting sick of me talking about it. The first game made me interested in art and writing, it was an experience I'll never forget. Like when you watch your favorite movie, listen to your favorite song or read your favorite book. it leaves a mark. That game affected me in a way that very few other media has ever done. Which is why this sequel was such a punch in the gut, and it didn't help that we waited 7 years for it.

And I don't care that there are gay or trans characters in the game. I really couldn't give any less sh*ts. Though, as a bi woman who advocate for trans rights, I can clearly see that most of it is being used as a shield so people will look like bigots once they criticize anything about the game. I also find it very suspicious how even Neil Druckmann said that some of the game testers said they hated the game and that he was prepared for people hating it, and then nearly EVERY "professional" game critic out there gave it a 10/10, which is an INSULT to any video game ever who truly lived up to that score and earned it. It is NOT a 10/10, it is NOT a 0/10. I'd love to give the development team a completely different score; the people who made the animations, the sound, music, the graphics, the combat, the accessibility system - everything was completely awesome, an easy 9-10/10.

But sadly, I don't play video games just for the graphics or the sound. Some of the best games ever created were amazing because of its incredible story, characters, deep lore, world design etc... The graphics and sound are just a wonderful bonus, but you cannot base your entire game upon it. Therefore, because it is a story driven game, I'm going to let the awful story overshadow everything I liked about the technical aspects of the game and give it a 4/10 overall. If it was a standalone with completely new characters whom I hadn't previously been so invested in and cared for so much, maybe I'd go up to a 5 or 6/10, but this is the highly anticipated sequel of one of the most beloved video games in history, which is why the fall is so much longer and harder.

I would not advise ANYONE to pay for this game, at least not at full price. Watch it on Youtube, you'll be saving yourself a lot of money, because it's just not worth it.

I'm truly saddened and disappointed by this and I hope we can see better from the video game industry in the future. Thanks and sorry for any bad English.

The writers tries hard wanting you to relate to a story that they butchered themselves. If done properly this would have been a master piece even with all the main plot and ideology remaining the same but unfortunately we got a game with all the aspects and key components of a master piece assembled together by monkeys.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I did not enjoy this game, and the first is one of my favorite games. I don't want to be one of these review trolls (clearly most of these negative reviews are fake), but did want to make it known that this game is a colossal disappointment. Everyone here is saying how they liked the graphics and voice acting but didn't like the story, which I agree with. But there are some other things that I really do not like:

    - The gameplay itself is boring and monotonous. Although the combat, crafting, stealth etc. are almost exactly the same as the first game, I think the pacing is bad here. The gameplay sections are really long (especially Seattle in the beginning), where getting from point A to B (whether it's traversal, exploration, clicker or combat encounters) takes a really long time. I found the pacing to be perfect in the first game. Usually a longer game is better, but I don't think that really worked here

    - On plot, I really do not like how you play in a flashback for almost the entire second half of the game. I have bias because I am not a huge fan of using flashbacks in fiction in general, but really, half of the game?!? It would be one thing if Abby's story was compelling and the gameplay was fun, but it wasn't. I think it was more just Druckmann's way of trying to have you sympathize with Abby and what she has been through so that you feel bad.

I do think that the Abby hate has gone too far, she did spare Ellie twice. But, I also do not think that it is possible to sympathize with a person who slowly beats someone to death with a golf club.

So yeah, I think this game sucks, even standalone, and if you compare to the first game, real bad. Way more boring and monotonous gameplay, and a story that tries to be edgy and revolutionary in games, but really is a waste of time. Most disappointing game of 2020.

The story, plotting, its characters have a lot of objective flaws and is really bad. The irrational decision-making by the characters is comical, and the story not being logically consistent with its characters and their personalities from the first game is insulting to fans. Also, the characters are thoroughly unlikable. The ending is completely pointless and fails to provide a satisfying payoff for all the stuff that came before. On a personal note, I don't like how incredibly violent the game is and how evil and stupid the vast majority of the characters are, and how you're forced to actually take control and carry it all out without any kind of agency to make a more positive and hopeful future for yourself and the world's characters. Lastly, I don't know what kind of moral this game is trying to impart on the player and I don't know who needs to hear that message. It isn't profound like the writers think it is - it's the moral of a story that would come out of an episode of Sesame Street.

PS: I am a lesbian woman, so I am not a trans-phobic or gay bigot, and I am not a virgin. If you think this because you simply disagree with my opinion about this game, then grow the hell up.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I thought the gameplay was pretty good but the story not so much. The game is basically about abby and not ellie. I feel neil had a different story planned but allowed a Hollywood writer (Halley Gross) come in a muck it all up and change everything! I believe the story was originally going to be tommy that died and not joel. I say this because in the trailer joel meets up with ellie not Jesse and it seems joel and ellie would of went after Tommy's killers and that, in my opinion, would have been a better story. The writing isn't like Neil's writing in this game and it was all over the place which isn't how neil writes at all. Seems awful funny that neil has always written great storys and now all of a sudden halley was involved in writing the story and its complete garbage. I feel neil has sold his soul to Hollywood and now his writing will be generic trash because he won't have the freedom to do what he wants and will have to listen to corporate Hollywood. I hope these bad scores (mostly from the writing) wakes neil up and allows him to get back to what he does best! If there is a third one, please dont screw it up as well! Expand

Expand

I paid 468 HK dollar for this game and I regret it.

I understand most of the critics who reviewed this game, they probably don't have to pay the money to get the game, in this case, I think my review is less biased because at least I paid for this game. What makes TLOU special? The story. There are many zombie games, killing games, beautiful games, who bother killing zombies in TLOU?

What makes TLOU special? The story. There are many zombie games, killing games, beautiful games, who bother killing zombies in TLOU? It's because of the story, so when the story fails, the games fails.

I think the game director changed his decision over the main story many times during the developing course, and eventually he did not know what he really want or to deliver (bad lesson to give a game director too much power in a studio), I am totally disconnected with the characters, I was forced to play and to connect with characters I don't give a F**K with, the story is not natural, not logical, just nonsense.

The story telling structure is horrible, rigid, forced and senseless.

The little trying to make an open world exploration experience feels out of date.

The game control feels clumsy, the UI design... It sucks when you want to swap your weapon during a fight.

    Overall I give a 4/10.

I am a massive fan of the first game and have been eagerly waiting for TLOU2. I managed to avoid all spoilers when the leak came out and was lucky to receive my game a day early.
I will start off with the good aspects of The Last Of Us 2, the graphics look really nice overall. There are moments where a bit less detail was put into them (Like snow falling off trees) but as far as games go,

I will start off with the good aspects of The Last Of Us 2, the graphics look really nice overall. There are moments where a bit less detail was put into them (Like snow falling off trees) but as far as games go, the graphics are solid.
The reason i have given this game such a low score is as follows: (Warning Spoilers ahead)

I was devastated that Joel was killed off, i was not only upset in the badly scripted way in which he was killed but how early in the game it happened. It's like Joel's character was such a different person from the first game. Of course humans change, but they really REALLY changed his character. He went from someone who was cautious and savvy to someone who blindly follows into dangerous situations.

As the game played out i was happy to see a gay person was being given some love on screen. Its nice to see my people in games, but the more i played, the more it became clear this wasn't Story first, sexuality second, it was full-blown IN YOUR FACE GAYNESS, the type i smell a mile away, the type that has an agenda behind it. I felt sick how badly this will set us back in the real world.

I feel the game has a totally different team than the original classic game and i was correct. I feel the old team were booted out, in favour of a more inclusive team, (Not better.....not even as good, just inclusive) which in layman's terms means people given a job based on their pronouns rather than skills. It means that us gamers suffer in the long run as you find stories suffer for it, and 9 times out of 10 have an agenda behind it.

Do they think they are helping us gay people? because they most certainly are not. Have they seen the backlash on here, twitter and youtube? This game has single-handedly set gay people back years and made thousands of people homophobic as it seems big companies are playing favourites to gay people over just being fair. How stupid can they be? This is not how you win people around on our struggle.
The last of us 2 plays every card it can to upset anyone who isn't gay. I was so upset seeing gay people having sex in a way that just seemed bent on inflaming the gamers that paid so much money to play this political nonsense.

I looked deeper tonight and found out that lead dev Neil Druckmann made the work environment hostile so that many of his team left. I feel this was a tactic to replace an excellent team with people he feels fit his politics. I went on to see Neil talking kindly about a well known far-left activist and anti-men YouTuber who has made it her goal to make sure games are diluted down, where everyone is gender-neutral and plain looking. Where men are feminine and women are always empowered, especially gay people and people of colour.

I would not be so harsh on this if it wasn't for the fact that these far-left activists always infiltrate already establish games and force identity politics into them like a plague. They would not have the guts to make a game from scratch as no one would buy it, but with an established game the fans are guaranteed to purchase it by the millions no matter what.

Shame on Neil Druckmann for treating the fans this way.
Shame on Neil Druckmann for treating gay people are pawns in his agenda.
Shame on Neil Druckmann for trying to silence people speaking out about his political game.

and shame on everyone complicit in making this game, I am disgusted in you. You do not represent me as a gay person. You have an agenda and i want nothing to do with it.
Your game is a total mess, the story is weak and has ruined, totally ruined such a beautiful first game. But of course none of you would understand that as you didn't make it.
I rate this game 4 out of 10. Graphics and sound are nice. The story and gameplay are terrible.

The studio could have easily hit a home run with this by only letting you do a 20% back story of Abby.....but not over HALF THE GAME on a back story you could give 2 s***'s about. I've never been so disappointed in a video game while playing. I liked the ending as it was clear they're making a 3rd one Also, the gay digital porn is not what I signed up for. Expand

    Big disappointment ...
The game is too long, part with Abby could be easily reduced. The plot is just a failure he lacks integrity.
Cheap reception with violence does not catch, too trite.
From a beautiful first part to a terrible second, what a disappointment ...
The technical part is good especially the graphics.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
