This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

A good technical achievement with the graphics and sound on a dated console, but really can't get passed how bad the story and writing is on this game. Was a struggle to finish with the janky controls and repetitive mechanics the first time I've had doubts about any future Naughty Dog titles.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Naughty Dog was my second best game company after Rockstar but they are no where near my tenth as of now. They ruined a perfectly likeable game and character for literally everyone. There's so many ways this story could have gone. The fact that they deliberately decided to murder a beloved character in the most contrived and gruesome way possible while fully understanding the effects of this choice on the millions of fans out there is as disrespectful as it is outrageous. There's so many ways the story could've progressed without killing off Joel. Pretty much everyone's "raison d'être" for playing the game. I probably could've come up a better story than this contrived **** being force fed to fans because they lack the motivation to tell a good compelling and engaging story like the prequel. If they wanted revenge to be the backbone of this story, they could have pulled it off regardless in a remarkable fashion without having to murder the main reason why people were gonna buy the game. This obviously explains why they lied to everyone about everything. Even the trailer was a **** lie. If you wanted a revenge story and relished the thought of murdering one of the characters, why not perhaps kill off Tommy and have Joel and Ellie go avenge his death. Seems pretty logical to me. The Joel in the TLOU certainly will do that if he lost his brother and I can totally see Ellie tagging along considering Joel will be pretty old and not as agile and strong as he used to be. If that's still too extreme, why not murder say a pregnant Maria and leave Tommy badly injured in a raid so much that he has to rely on Joel and Ellie to exact revenge for his beloved wife in his stead. Or why not destroy the town, kill a few people if you have to and mortally hurt Joel if you wanted to have Ellie go solo. Beat him up, even shoot off his leg like you did but keep him alive. It will make better sense why Ellie spared Abby's life in the end.
I could think of so many other scenarios and despite not being a writer, I can tell the story was forced. Forced so much that even if they tried, there will always still be loose ends and half plots to deal with. The game just feels broken and messed up on so many levels, I can't help but think this is some sort of a propaganda story. They had no reason to kill off Joel, yet they did, to prove a useless point that makes no sense at all.
I'm not gonna say anything positive about this game because when you start a game on such a badly horrific note, that's what you're gonna get. It destroyed the experience for me and I can't help but wish the game never released at all. Or it released with completely different characters telling a completely different story. You deserve a lot less than you're getting Naughty Dog. Better be grateful!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just played through it. The game was really disappointing for me as a fan of the first one. After I saw the leaks I lowered my expectations and even with my low expectations the game got even worse than I thought. I'm still disappointed by the lazy writing of the Story especially how they handled Joel's death. Tommy and Joel wouldn't be so dumb to reveal their identities to complete strangers especially when they wear uniforms of a miliyary group which doesn't operate in the area of Jackson. There is literally no reason for them two trust the armed group of strangers. I can understand that Abby wants revenge but let's be honest her father was a moron of a doctor who had such a big ego that he wanted to kill a teenager to make a cure. He as a doctor should know that a vaccine for a fungal infection hasn't been achieved with the resources they had before the outbreak. There is literally no chance for a vaccine. And if it would be possible the dumbest thing to do would be to kill the only human known to be immune. Also it's kinda his own fault wanting to kill a girl without consent and to threaten someone who is heavy armoured person with a scalpel. You don't bring a knife to a gunfight. And Abby knows that her dad was willing to kill a girl without her knowing she would die. Many people said the context of the leaks were important. But holy **** it made the game worse. The gameplay was okayisch but at the point where we switch to play as Abby I just wanted the game to end. Story was **** and gameplay got boring. Tlou2 is the first game that made me to switch difficulty to just run through it to get to the end. The end wasn't worth playing to be honest but I was glad the game was over. The game looks beutiful and has many details though. Also the soundtrack is really good like last time. These are the only reasons I give 3 points to this game. Wouldn't recommend fans of the first game to play it. Others might enjoy it more.... Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Some thoughts for those who thought Abby "ruined the game". Hear me out, because I get you, but have a different opinion. I would write a whole review, but it feels more important to just focus on what a lot of people thought the game got wrong, which I feel it got incredibly right. – You clearly do speak fluent sarcasm (rude dialect), it's obvious. Jokes aside, I think Abby was a hard character to understand for those who don't feel the love in her voice when **** her dad, Owen, and Manny. Ellie can be friendly, Abby will always come off as a little closed off because of her pain. – Her actions were justified. Joel **** humanity, set it back 100 years at least. I would have wanted to do the same if I had no knowledge or connection to Ellie and Joel's relationship – We both hate her. But at least try to understand her choices. – Playing as her made my skin crawl in the best kind of way. The game was uncomfortable, because when you switch you see her through Ellie's eyes at the peak of loss and hopelessness. – Her and Ellie are mirrors; Ellie is immune, small, stealthy, better at killing infected, and made strong by her companions (at first). Abby is large, intimidating, aggressive, trained to kill people, and made stronger through loss (her father, relationship with Owen, her cause in the Fireflies). – Only at the end do both character arcs reverse, and they come to a point of mutual understanding, growth, and forgiveness. Abby relies on Lev and forgives herself, Ellie forgives Joel and Abby. – Ellie killed Dina's dream and wrecked her own mind because of revenge. Abby got her friends killed for the same reason. – I didn't want Joel to die, but I believe the alternative would have been the same dynamic as the last game (which makes no sense to me given Ellie's growth and awareness of Joel's betrayal) or a sad sap story of Ellie causing tragedy because she can't forgive Joel, who is still alive, and Joel failing to help Ellie because he's blinded by love. What we got was a great piece on cyclical revenge, and a bleak picture of humanity's darkness. – Jesse was fleshed out during the story, but I'm hoping we get a Jesse & Joel DLC. Lots of DLC! ALL THE DLC. Tommy going to the Big Sur firefly camp looking for Abby would be good too. Now what I think it could have done better: – The Rattlers part felt rushed; I would have liked to see Ellie travel to Santa Barbara, even if alone. Preferably, having Dina (leaving baby with Jesse's parents) or Tommy trail her there, and save her from the near-death side injury at the end, like how she healed Joel in game 1. – Ellie should have killed Abby and then nearly die (with an ambiguous ending), or Abby kill Ellie and Dina kill Abby and Lev both (definitive ending). – Plot variations for multiple playthroughs could have been a nice touch, but I understand it's hard to write a good story in that format. Overall, this is a **** masterpiece in my humble and clueless opinion! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After 7 years of anticipation for the next chapter in this series that many avid gamers such as myself who hold the original in such high regard, this mediocre attempt of a sequel tarnishes the original's legacy and decides to bash the players over the head with its ham-fisted political agenda and ideologies. The plot is contrived and tries to be cleverer than it actually is. The old characters are either a shell of their former selves or are just completely different from what they were before and make dumb decisions. The new characters are either bland, one dimensional or just plain terrible and any chance of any of them developing is short lived. As a longtime fan of Naughty Dog and all their works, I have never lost respect for a developer as quickly as I did for Naughty Dog. They should be ashamed of themselves for blatant false advertising in the trailer, having the trailers deceive fans into believing that they will go on the journey as Ellie with Joel by her side. FALSE Joel is barely even in the game and the scenes he is in are just pointless flashbacks and not to mention that you only play as Ellie for only half of the game, more or less. The absolute nerve the developers had to try and pull a page out of Kojima's book and have the player play as a character that they despise and think that you'll grow to empathise with her is something that will go down in gaming history as one of the worst decisions of gaming development. The reason why the switch worked more for Kojima is pretty simple: Raiden didn't kill any beloved characters. Gender and identity politics have no place in being in a game like this. In a world ravaged by a deadly fungus and infected , survival and knowing whom to trust or not to, are the most paramount things to care about in the game's world, not what your gender or sexual orientation is. If this is the route that lies in wait for the new generation of gaming that is approaching then I will no longer be apart of this community. True gamers like myself play these games as a form of escapism, not to be bogged down with political messaging that's about as subtle as using gasoline to put out a fire. If you loved everything about the original game then you'll be doing yourself a favour by not buying this game, or hell even renting it. I have never written a review or anything like this on these types of sites but the way this game affected me for the wrong reasons I just had to put my thoughts into words. RIP Joel, you deserved better Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Heart-breaking for all of the wrong reasons, the story of TLoU2 is an objective downgrade when standing in contrast to the first game.

Perhaps the most pronounced flaw with the story of the TLoU2 was the writers completely abandoning the main themes of the first game to instead spread an invasive message of female protagonists forcefully replacing beloved male characters to fit an agenda and revenge leading to nothing but further destruction and ruination.

This is not what the Last of Us is supposed to represent as a narrative. The themes of the first game included Guilt, Loss, Acceptance of One's past and most importantly, the theme of Hope being the main driving force of the entire game. The bleak atmosphere present within the first game simply served the purpose of enhancing the previously mentioned themes, yet, in this latest instalment, the bleak atmosphere completely engulfs the entirety of the plot in a shroud of perpetual darkness and depression.

it is quite obvious that this sequel does things for the sake of being different rather than for the sake of elevating the story to never before seen heights. The prime example of this would be in the form of Joel's unearned and needless death. Evidently, the writers had desperately tried recreating the shock value of Sarah's death for the first game, with the 'clever' twist being the daughter figure witnessing the death of her father figure right in front of her eyes. However, this just comes off as being cheap and unearned. You're telling me that a hardened veteran such as Joel, the same person who sensed the Hunter ambush in the first game, would be dumbed down to such a point that he would follow an armed stranger into their home which in turn would have himself and Tommy surrounded by even more armed individuals, without even having a firearm ready? No, I'm sorry but that is just lazy and betrays the characteristic of Joel being cautious and highly vigilant no matter the situation. The player feels anger and frustration rather than shock and sadness, as they had to bear witness to one of the best written characters in video game history receiving perhaps the worst death of a main character period. Moreover, Joel was brutalized by an unrealistically muscular woman wielding Driver Nephi's Nine Iron from New Vegas.

The writers then expect players to endure 6-8 Hours playing as the roided out female who massacred one of their most beloved video game characters. No amount of subliminal 'Good-Guy Propaganda' could ever make Abby likeable in my eyes. I didn't care that she was petting puppies and helping save Zebras with her dad, the only thing I cared about during Abby's part was speed running past it so that I could continue to the actual story that I care about. The sad truth of the matter is that Abby could have been a strong secondary protagonist, however, the death of Joel at the very beginning of the game made her irredeemable. Only idiots, psychopaths and paid stooges in suits pretending to be valid, unbiased critics would actually enjoy playing as Abby and sympathize with her, which is such a shame considering that I could tell that Laura Bailey was giving the part her all. The writers should honestly feel ashamed.

Being brief, characters completely abandoned their characteristics which they had attained and defined during the first game, for the simple purpose of the writers feeling lazy when thinking of ways to accelerate the already paint-dry slow plot-hole filled story.

The saddest part of all of this is that I expected a lot better out of Druckmann, and I know for a fact that his talent when it comes to writing could have easily made this game an actual masterpiece rather than a colossal failure in the eyes of the general consumer. The evidence for this would be arguably the best parts of the game, the flashbacks. In my opinion, most, if not all, of the flashbacks were 10/10 and masterful in explaining the relationship between Joel and Ellie. As a matter of fact, these flashbacks were the only time in which I smiled throughout all of the game. What a shame and what a joke that the game did not follow these flashbacks instead of this horrifically stitched together plot.

Furthermore, if this game was meant to honour Ellie, it fell on its face thrice over before land sliding off of a cliff. Ellie gets one of the worst and most undeservingly dark endings I have ever seen in a video game. She loses everything she cares about, even being incapable of playing the guitar properly at the end of the game. I found this egregiously disgusting especially when Abby got a happy ending, mirroring the end of the first game where a now deflated Abby and Lev act as the new Joel and Ellie, sailing away into the sunset.

I understand the ending with what the writers presented, but Ellie sparing Abby is like if John Wick spared the person who killed his dog.

In conclusion, this story was mercilessly crippled by forced identity politics.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It absolutely breaks my heart to see the poor reviews for this amazing game. I thoroughly enjoyed this game, start to finish, despite having a minor complaint regarding the ending. From stunning visuals to, in my opinion, a well thought out story line i struggle to see why the majority of reviews for this game are negative.
I only have 2 complaints about this game: The positioning of Joel's death in the play through and the ending. However these are only minor complaints. Joel dies very early on in the play through which doesn't really give players enough time to reconnect with him as a character, which some say makes his death pointless (?). I replayed the first game prior to launch so i did not encounter this problem but i can see why it is an issue. However his death makes more and more sense as the story progresses and acts as Ellie's main driving force. Without the death of Joel, this game wouldn't make half as much sense. In terms of the ending, I feel it didn't provide enough closure in terms of the characters besides Ellie. Ellie's journey is closed off perfectly and having realized this much my issue with the ending is minor.
All in all the issues with this game are minor and i think it is worthy of everyone who enjoyed the first game's time. I loved every second and everyone I know did also. Pick this game up!

But in all seriousness. I've enjoyed many triple A games over the years and many were able to bring tears of both happiness and sadness to my eyes. TLOUPII however, is a different beast. It doesn't pull any punches and literally makes you followthrough on few of those by yourself. And not all of them are as easy as pressing square. Every hit makes you feel... emotions and a lot of doubt. If this isn't the definition of art then I don't know what is.
This is easily THE GAME of my life. Nothing even comes close.
On the other hand, if you're into games for the graphics, brutal combat and environmental storytelling... this game is also for you. Just watch some cool combat clips on youtube or digital foundry's analysis if you find it hard to believe.
