Yes, the game is depressing and in many ways horrible (the story, not the game), but it is also really really good! Is the gameplay perfect? No. Is the story perfect? No. But it is still so, so good! I hate what happened in the beginning of the game, and I wanted Ellie to find and kill Abby. But then you play as Abby, and oh my gosh! I kinda ended up loving her! Not what she did, but her, as a character. And sweet little Ellie! I feel for her and my heart kept breaking for her as the story went on. This game suprised me in many ways, and had me in tears many others. Seriously! Play it, and try to stop being offended that Joel died. This game does not deserve zeroes. There have been games I personally don't like that I can still appreciate for the game it is. And this one is gritty and dark and depressing, but also beautiful in a dark way and wonderful and heartbreaking and deserving of love. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Game is pretty great. It does have its story issues but overall it's a great piece of work. I guess they could have done the major twist in a slightly different way, maybe reshuffle the order of play from Ellie to Abby. That said I actually loved the Abby part. Ngl originally I wasnt a fan since it felt like I was forcibly pushed out of Ellie's story, but the more I played with Abby the more I liked her. It wasnt even about me 'forgiving' her for killing Joel, she was quite a well-rounded character.
The end is quite dark and leaves this stale feeling knowing that Ellie, who we have rooted for since the first game, does not get a happy ending but thats the good part about this game, it's quite realistic in that sense.
My only big criticism is why on earth has no one realised that killing Ellie in the first game would have been such a stupid idea and would have most likely destroyed any potential for a vaccine???

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A story of ups and downs

    POSITIVE :

    Gameplay
Faithful to the first game with attention to detail and a few nice new features.
Small point of criticism > environmental puzzles and unlocking safes become cumbersome after a while

    Voice acting
    TOP notch
Actors know what they're doing and it's seamlessly synched with their motions (due to motion acting)

    Sounds & soundtrack
Beautiful, would've liked to hear more background music to support the mood.

    Graphics
One of the best-looking titles with stable framerate on PS4. Not a lot of bugs/glitches.

    MIXED FEELINGS:

    Storyline
It's not horrible, there are great and memorable moments to be found but overall, I feel let down. If I think too much on it, immersion = lost.

For me personally a story of revenge requires either fulfillment or redemption (forgive w/o regret).
There's none to be found here.

    Character assassination in cutscenes.
See a door? Let's go/burst right through it. While you as a player are either very careful (stealthy) or go in guns blazing with excellent marksmanship / next to unlimited health, in cutscenes the story takes control for the sake of plot and screws characters over. Not how I expect seasoned survivors/scouts to act in real life (and also how they did in the first part). Sorry, but this comes over as lazy writing really ...

Overtly use of flashbacks and character switches.
I get it, you want to show 2 sides of the story and help understand how these characters feel. Just don't exaggerate, it slows down the pace immensely and some storylines feel unneccessary.

    Strange take on pregnancy.
A woman who's pregnant for +6 months can parkour like a champ.
A woman who's pregnant for x weeks becomes jaded all of a sudden and can't move.
I don't get it, who thought this is close to true life and even respectful to women?

The hunt for Joel that isn't.
Abby by chance encounters Joel. He saves her.
First of all, what are the odds, lady Luck must be smiling on our new prota-/antagonist.
Second, there's no after-thought to the rescue, no duality in vengeance which would be the humane reaction.

Overall I'd rate it 6.5, a lot of work went in the development and really, it does show.
But the main story ... written for the sake of a mundane plot.

Finally, 3 lessons I take away from this adventure :
(and the protagonists should've done in the first place)

    1. if you're a renowned killer and you're outnumbered by strangers never tell them your real name

    2. if you see your dad point-blank being worked on with a golfclub, shoot first, ask questions later 3. the doors make for nice songs but are lethally hazardous, enter with care To Naughty Dog I say, when you write a storyboard, PROOF-READ it and check what works, what does not. Do NOT censor genuine points of criticism. Learn from mistakes and grow as a writer.

Unfortunate with the leaks before hand and how people have taken them out of context but this game is a masterpiece. best form of media i've ever ingested if you have played the first game you owe it to yourself to experience this game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly didn't want to have to write this review, but after how much I loved The Last of Us and hated the sequel, I figure I need to verbalize what's actually wrong with the game.

Now, gameplay and graphics are great, bu the reason I'm not giving this game any points is because it's a story-focused game. You don't get points for sound and visuals if the overall experience is horrendous.

First off, there seems to be this idea going around that people hate this game because of the lesbian relationship and depiction of transgendered individuals. Personally, I haven't played a ton of games with LGBT characters, but one outstanding game that comes to mind is VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action. In this game you take the role of a bartender named Jill in a cybernetic dystopian-like future. You learn about the world through the characters you serve, and their stories shape your understanding of this world the story takes place in.

It's a narrative-driven game, just like TLOUP2, and has an array of different genders and sexualities. The inclusion of LGBT in this game doesn't take away from the story, but rather is a part of it, without pandering or trying to point out how "woke" the developers are.

In TLOUP2, men are bad. Joel is a "stupid old man" as Abby describes him, before bashing him to death with a golf club. A man gives Ellie some steak sandwiches and she gives them away calling them "bigot sandwiches". Throughout the story their are interactions that leave you feeling as though the game is going out of it's way to paint men as bad people. If that's how someone feels, great. But if the only way you can build up women and feminism is by bashing men then that's pretty shallow and weak story-telling. That doesn't even touch on the unnecessarily long segments of over the top romance scenes with Ellie and Dina. It's like the developers were pointing a flashing sign saying "look how progressive we are at Naughty Dog!" As I said, nothing wrong with LGBT relationships, but when you go over the top with the romance it makes it seem pandering and shallow, less like you want inclusion and more like you want to make yourselves seem woke.

One of the biggest criticisms I have is how out of character the main characters seem to act. Joel and Tommy trusting strangers and giving their real names when they've just met makes absolutely zero sense. If you don't believe me, go play the Last of Us part 1 again. Or just watch some cut-scenes. Joel is incredibly cautious around new people, a trait he passed on to Ellie by the end of the first game, and it's almost like this game was made by a whole different team than the ones who made the first game. It's insane.

And lastly, the overall narrative. Now, at this point if you've played the game it's pretty obvious this story has an overall message about revenge, and essentially how revenge is bad and ends up becoming a never-ending cycle. It's a pretty basic theme we've seen in many stories before. But generally speaking, the way it works is that if the audience genuinely feels as though letting the antagonist live and ending the cycle of revenge is justified. That the audience feels a genuine connection with the antagonist, and that the protagonist has had enough of an experience that has changed their perspective about getting revenge.

Well, that doesn't happen here. Abby continues to be unlikable throughout this game, and playing with her for about 10 hours (which the game forces you to do) you don't feel like you've come to understand or appreciate her character more. And if anything, I think that's more the fault of the writers at Naughty Dog than it is with the player. The game never explicitly answers a very simple question: why should I care about Abby when she murdered Joel? It attempts to "humanize" her by making you play from her perspective, but again, never answers the question outright. And at the end of the game, right when you as the player feel as though Joel will be avenged, Ellie decides against it. After killing so many other people who were involved in his death, she spares the one person who deserves to die more than any of the others. It leaves the player feeling less like they experienced a videogame and more like they left a terribly written movie.

In short, I think the worst thing about this game is although I can get my money back, I can't get my time back that I wasted on this abysmal, horribly written "gaming" experience. 0/10. Honestly play something else.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is an absolutely gorgeous piece of art that is so polarizing. It’s amazing the immediate knee jerk reaction this game has gotten. I went into the game spoiler free, but I figured Joel was going to die at some point. And boy did he die. It was horrible and I hated Abby so much throughout the first half of the game. I couldn’t understand why she did what she did and couldn’t believe that ND was trying to justify her story. When I finally got to the Abby v Ellie encounter after Ellie’s Seattle day 3, I was livid that I had to play as abby. I kept on killing her over and over again, saying “good, you deserve this.” But then the story began to unfold. Abby was just a little girl when all of her friends (besides a select few) were murdered before her by Joel, including her dad. Not only that, but Joel completely and selfishly took away the worlds only hope for a vaccine. Still, I was mad at Abby. But then you begin to learn more about her friends and why they are there. You start to feel empathy, which so many people on this site cannot wrap their head around. Abby didn’t want to kill everyone, she wanted justice and she got it. She spares Ellie’s life twice. Ellie, however, is so purely blinded by a need for revenge, very similar to Joel when his daughter died. Abby also gets to that point when she’s about to kill Dina, but chooses a different path because Lev (like Ellie in the first game) is her anchor to reality. She shows mercy and breaks that cycle. Fast forward to the final encounter, and you’ve finally gotten your chance to finish Abby. But then something hits Ellie, that none of this will bring back Joel and she’s falling into this same pattern he feel into years before. She chooses for the first time to see clearly and show mercy, not only for Abby but for Lev as well. It is an unbelievably good story.

Gameplay wise, there are so many improvements to the first game. Cover systems, AI, attack patterns, and ways to go about completely an area are heavily varied. I played on survivor and some of the parts were crushing to figure out. Zombies can get released on bad people, I could go on and on. It’s so much fun

Graphics, Sound, and locations speak for themselves, they are unbelievable. I felt like I was actually on top of a skyscraper or in SB while playing. My only gripe is that I feel some of the minor characters on ellie’s side could’ve been expanded on, especially Jesse and Dina. And that some of the plot is shock value. But that absolutely does not take away from this work of art.

I truly believe this game deserves GOTY and would be extremely surprised if it didn’t win it after initial sales we are seeing. Anyone rating this game 0-4 is a basement dweller who can’t emphasize with different points of view and try to walk through why characters do bad things. This game will hurt you, but that’s the point. It is a harsh reality about a post apocalyptic world.

The story is unbelievable, full of plot holes, often depraved in failed attempts at adding shock factor and spits on the legacy of the original. A painful game to experience. It is further insult to injury that Naughty Dog used false advertising to sell the game to fans of the first.
