This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I bought this game having replayed LoU remastered and ignoring all the bad press about Ellie - you know she's gay from LoU expansion and its irrelevant (even if her romance is rammed down your throat).
Potentially some of the greatest gameplay on the ps4 with amazing encounters is ruined by forcing you to play the comically beefed up enemy Abby for half the game.
I know the writers were going for a Jamie Lannister-style turnaround, but it doesn't work, you still want her dead and I ended up rushing through this part of the game to get back to being Ellie, even though there were some really cool set pieces as Abby. Did they even do any honest user testing? The ending was also very unsatisfactory and made the whole final journey pointless. Potentially the greatest game of this console let down by writing trying to be too clever. Only bit I enjoyed in second half of game was launching Abby off buildings/ losing to Ellie on purpose in their theatre showdown.

Excellent gameplay and a beautiful looking game. I'm impressed with the risks Naughty Dog was willing to take. The story in my opinion is a little tedious and it's hard to emphasize with the characters. Overall I think it's a good game, but it doesn't live up to the expectations when you compare it with TLOU1.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The main issue I had with this game is the script, the story is written terribly, one of the main reasons why is because Joel (Protagonist in Part 1) is killed off in the first few hours of the game and I can understand why people did not like that. Joel getting killed off is not the main issue, the main issue is about 10-13 hours into the game you play the character Abby (The husky lady who killed Joel with a golf club) and that was not a smart move to play. You could have created many better outcomes for this game but you didn't. One of the other things people might not like about it is that it takes risk, and by risk I mean that it dares to be depressing and I think that this game is pretty good. This game has one of the most depressing ending I have ever seen in my life. The message is trying to say is that heroes don't always get the death they deserve, what addiction can lead to, and in this world their is no good and bad only people doing what they think is right. Gameplay 10/10, Story 6/10, characters 3/10 Art direction 10/10, dialogue 7/10. This game is a 7.4/10. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TL;DR - too long, but worth a go for some pretty solid gameplay if you can pick it up on sale. I don't think this is GOTY at all, but worth playing still.

It's hard to really define where I fall on this game. On one hand, the gameplay is pretty good. The stealth isn't so merciful that if you're discovered you can't get back into stealth to try and finish your enemies off sneakily, and enemy AI feels dynamic and smart.

That said, the gameplay doesn't evolve beyond the first chapter - sure there are upgrades, but they're minimal and don't change gameplay much. Generally, the game is too long, twice as long as it needs to be - and that's not that I'm against switching perspective half way through, I just think that each half should have been half the length, maybe even shorter.

Through most of the game I found myself dissapointed that I had gameplay to go through, I genuinely think it would have made a better short TV series than a game. With that said again, the character motivations throughout feel forced and unbelievable - particularly with each character flip-flopping towards the end.

The boss fights also weren't great - at least not the ones against humans. Melee doesn't feel good in this game, and the bit where you're Abby chasing Ellie felt disconnected to the rest of the gameplay.

Also a shame they got rid of Joel, as the only character relationship I really gave a **** about was between him and Ellie, all the other characters have rubbish chemistry and awful dialogue.

What stops this from getting a 10 is the story, which by now you heard is very controversial. I'll give the creators props for taking chances and really hitting you in the gut with some genuinely shocking moments. However, the way the story was executed left a lot to be desired. I get what they were going for, but in the end, I was left unsatisfied and not really all that stoked for the next game. The major issue with the story isn't the themes, it's how they were done. The first game was a masterpiece in visual storytelling and character arches that really made you invest. In this game, all subtlety is replaced with beat-you-over-the-head preaching and excessive amounts of cheap storytelling tropes that frankly make you despise every character. By the end, I really didn't care who lived or died, I just wanted it to end. I can't even say if this game has any replay value because I beat it a week after finishing it and have no desire to relive it, a far cry from the epic journey I wanted to go on countless times in the first game. Hopefully, the third installment takes the "less is more" approach. Expand

The narrative structure is a mess, if the devs wanted me to empathise and understand Abby, they should have opened the game with the flashback of her father, and allowed the player some time to warm to her before having her do something horrible. In the original, Joel is thoroughly humanised in the opening sequence for a reason - first impressions stick. And there is a reason why his worst act (decimating the fireflies) is saved for the final sequence - by that point we can understand his actions, even if we can't agree with them. Introducing a character as a murderous psychopath and then redeeming them is a tall order, but not impossible (see: Jamie Lannister). But it needs to be done with finesse - hamfisted sequences with pet dogs and former lovers sprinkled between further atrocities did not work. The game asks players to consider the cycle of hate, how it can damage a person, and how there are two sides to any conflict. It is ironic that these themes obviously took precedence over plot and character in development, but fail to land because of the shambolic plot and characters.

Given a 7 for the beautiful visuals and improvements in mechanics, and for having some passable characters and story beats. I expect the lowish user score is due to its mediocrity being so disappointing considering the masterpiece that was the original. Surprised to see the high critic scores, I won't be trusting critics again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us: Part II is a good game and while I don't think it's as bad as people say, I don't think it's as good as critics made it out to be either. It is a much weaker game than the original. While there are 10/10 aspects of this game for sure, there were a few aspects that didn't really work for me.

    The great:
    Graphics - 10/10 (Pretty self-explanatory)
Gameplay - 10/10 (While gameplay might seem outdated to some, I thoroughly enjoyed it)
Level Design - 10/10 (Levels so large with multiple paths to evade/escape enemies
Acting - 10/10 (Ashley, Laura, Troy and others fantastic, as expected.
Nostalgic Flashback Sequences between Ellie and Joel - 10/10

    The good:
I do like the story to this game and I like what the writers were going for however, I think with a stronger writer this game could have been amazing. I did like a lot of characters (Ellie, Joel, Lev, Yara, Dina, Jessie, Tommy, Owen and even Abby.

    The not-so good:
I don't have a problem with Joel dying the way he did, he was never a good guy and it makes sense that former fireflies would be seeking revenge for what he did at the end of the first game. However, I do have a problem when his death is not set-up properly. Joel and Tommy walking into a room full of armed strangers seemed out of place and contrived if I'm honest. There was just barely any suspense leading up to his death.
I think Seattle Day 1 for both Ellie and Abby could've been shortened down at least half, as this really affects the pacing (However, Seattle Day 2 definitely improved this, in my opinion).
i also don't understand why Joel is seen by everyone as the only villain in this game either. I wish the game demonstrated how both Joel and the Fireflies were both villains, as neither of them asked Ellie's permission as to what she would like to have done.
Mel was an awful character and I had no problem seeing her get stabbed in the neck by Ellie. I thought she was so stupid to go out on a combat mission whilst pregnant.
I liked Dina, Jessie, Lev etc. but I wish they were fleshed out more so I could care about them even more. That being said, all performances in this game were fantastic.
The Santa Barbara section was also too long, especially when I thought the game was coming to an end. Speaking of that section, I had no problem with Ellie sparing Abby at the end, it just didn't make sense considering the 1000s of NPCs she killed before then, whilst showing no remorse for any of them.

    Overall:
As a huge fan of the original, I did enjoy this, and it is a very fun game to play. However, I feel that the writers, Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross, had good ideas but they needed a stronger writer overall. I would recommend this if you can get it at a sale price. Considering how divisive the game is, I can't be sure if you will enjoy it or not.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part 2 is a story that attempts to say many things, yet ultimately fails to cohesively convey everything it wishes to say. There are elements that feel forced, and there are some unlikable and often forgettable characters. The game will make you feel uncomfortably powerful and powerless.
Before I begin on the story, let me first say whatever positives I have regarding this game. Those can be broken down into three categories. Gameplay, visuals, and accessibility. After this, I will talk regarding story.

    Visuals
TLOU2 is perhaps one of the most photorealistic games in recent memory. I had just come off of playing Death Stranding prior to playing this game. The beautiful yet horrifying and occasionally grotesque set pieces within this title were clearly crafted with love. Naughty Dog has taken the world that they originally conveyed on PS3 and utilized the technology of the modern age to create vivid imagery. I myself love when a pretty game comes out that shows what hardware can truly push. The Last of Us has a uniquely apocalyptic while still grounded art design and it is beautifully showcased. Seattle is the main set piece and the depressing, overcast, and dreary atmosphere permeate this game perfectly. The characters we see are often detailed down to pores. The environments feel simultaneously dead and alive as if they were made to fill the player with dread while still having their own beauty. The infected areas made my skin crawl with their dusty, overgrown, and eerie design. Additionally, the glass breaking mechanics were a small detail that was overexploited by myself for simple satisfaction. Areas to climb, walk through, or squeeze through were made obvious, in a way where it was mentally recognizable without having necessary visual indication. Overall, the visuals Naughty Dog within TLOU2 were top tier.

    Gameplay
The gameplay of TLOU2 was in classic Naughty Dog fashion to their previous games. This time however, many of these mechanics felt refined, more responsive, and were fun to use. The key word here is "felt". These mechanics felt familiar to their predecessors, but somehow also felt like they were somewhat snappier, had a little less delay once input, and all movement felt smoother. Naughty Dog has a realistic approach to actions made by the characters as well. Unlike popular action games such as Call of Duty, you cannot simply make 5 actions happen in a split second. This allows players to take a slower and more methodical approach to combat within these games. I would be remised if I did not talk about infected encounters as well. These encounters feel more weighty in this game with the new dodge mechanic. This dodge mechanic adds a new level of savagery to the combat and, more specifically, to the enemies. The infected feel heavier and more ferocious with the player having to be less careless and pay more attention to everything the opponent does. It turns melee combat into more of a dance. Finally, the puzzle mechanics such as power, ropes, and safes are all powerful but sometimes tedious. In summary, the gameplay of TLOU2 feels tighter, more deadly, and consequential, which are all powerful in a game like this.

    Accessibility
Gaming is for everyone. That is the sentiment that much of the industry shares and it shines brightly in TLOU2. Once the game first boots up, it takes you through an in-depth list of options to make this game as accessible as it possibly can be for all who decide to play. I wish to see this in more titles from all developers. I enjoyed the auto pickup mechanic as I believe my triangle button may have given out after playing through this title otherwise. When everyone can play a game, everyone wins.

    Story
I had not played The Last of Us until before I played this title. The end of the first title ending with Joel's lie left me with a feeling as if there was more to explore. The opening of TLOU2 gave me the best closure for the end of the first title. In contrast, the story of TLOU2 left me with more closure at the end than the first title with Ellie walking into the distance defeated. The story of TLOU2 is polarizing to say the least. I found myself feeling as though this was a multiple choice story but only had one option for me to follow with the linear story. I found my morals and emotions challenged. However, like Seattle, storms loomed too. Characters such as Isaac, Mel, Jesse, Tommy, and Owen all felt underused to me. The LGBTQ+ elements of this story felt forced in the case of Ellie and Dina, who I did not sense a deep connection between. The elements of Lev being trans and forced out of the religious cult that he is a part of feel like a political message. The story left me feeling hollow, yet indifferent. Desolate is the descriptor for my experience. The Last of Us Part 2 is a game that will have you go through many emotions, trials, and moral-challenging situations. Play this game and see how you feel.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played this game with very low expectations due to the review bombing that suffered. I should've known better, the game is really good. Not 9 or 10 good, but good nevertheless.

The story and plot is compelling if you bother in having an open mind and try to understand. The game-play is way better than in the first one and also is the level design.

Why people in this comments keeps repeating the nonsense of Joel being out of character and entering Abby's gang hideout? He is no longer a survivor, he lived safe and comfy in Jackson for 4+ years already. Plus he is old. Just pay attention to the story and stop whining.

The story is great, makes you feel miserable, yes, but that is not manipulation. Plenty of other stories in other media and in games try to achieve the same. And that is great! You cannot just rate 0, 1 or 2 a game because it was not the cliche story with good vs evil. It is a very humane story, we are all good and evil.

Graphics, acting and music are top notch.

    My complains:

The secondary characters are my only real problem. They all are quite empty and shallow, with maybe the exception of Lev. (-1)

Game-play: well, this is nothing new, even improved from the first game, in the second it is still quite repetitive. It actually helped that Abby and Ellie had different weapons and styles to approach conflict. But still. They should have approached the game with more open-city like in the beginning, it would've been much better (-1)

Companies should stop f***ing up their employees. With happy employees you get higher quality products. With crunched employees your projects get delayed and they suffer in quality (-1)

Patch it for PS5 please! it was even slower and lower quality than in PS4-pro, i will definitely play it again and go for platinum when that happens. (this does not subtract)

    My review about salty reviewers:

    - they are not open minded, hence they don't understand the story. You don't decide the story, writers do.
    - I have the feeling that having the 2 main characters being strong women made many kb warriors salty.
    - false advertisement claims are nonsense. A game isn't finished until they go gold. Everything before is just work in progress subject to change.
    - developers owe us nothing as fans, period. You don't like it? don't buy it. I am pretty sure that at least 40% of the negative reviews are just kb-warriors trolling.

The stealth in this game is basic as hell and the fact that people are giving this a 10/10 gameplay is just hilarious to me. For a 25-30 hour game, the gameplay is not deep enough to supply you with that much entertainment for so long. The amount of choices you have to kill enemy groups are definitely not limited but again is not enough to entertain you for so long. The lack of puzzles is really daunting, other than doing the decent stealth, all you do is walk around this beautiful world and spam triangle mindlessly to loot stuff, that's it. There is no puzzles to enhanced the game's repetition and the combat from the first 4 hours till the last 2 hours is almost unrecognizable other than the new guns that does not change the gameplay loop at all. If this game was a tight 16-18 hour long game I would excuse a lot of these issues but it is not, the game felt repetitive and a straight up drag to play.
The only problem I have with the story is that instead of making the story entirely around the characters, they made he story entirely around the message it was trying to tell. You can find characters doing borderline out of character or even stupid things just for the sake of the plot and the message is pretty elementary level.
Other than that, still a pretty good game and I recommend it on sale

I was going into the game expecting to hate it and while I feel they could have done many things better it was still a good game. Joels death was horrible. How would you feel if one of your favorite characters of all time was killed two hours into the game with a golf club to the head and then his lifeless corpse spat on and told to go to hell??? Once I got over this the game was ok. I loved the cutscenes but they were a little out of order it seemed to me. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. if i were to rate this a year ago when the game came out this would no doubt be a 10 for me. i loved my first play through but going back a few weeks ago i have some issues with it.

the games far too long. on average it’s took me around 23 hours to beat. i get that they want you to play as both characters but does each section need to be upwards of 10 hours? and on top of that you also have to do the unnecessary santa barbra 2 hour killing spree just to get to the end of the game and have ellie do nothing to abby. the person she hates the most and who she’s wanted dead for the last 25 hours of gameplay. what-

the love triangles. one is pushing it but 2? really naughty dog? at least with dina, ellie, and jesse you have some character development and they come across as somewhat interesting but mel and owen are barely characters. owen is only there to be a love interest for abby but then mel is there to be the love interest for owen... how does that make any sense? and then owen just ends up cheating on mel, his pregnant girlfriend with abby the night before ellie comes and murders them. talk about jamming plot into the span of almost no time.

the pacing. if you’re telling me this game has good pacing you’re objectively wrong. if you actually wanna play the game you have to wait 2 hours and slowly sit and wait to watch joel die so you can go to seattle and actually play the game and forward plot. it’s obnoxious. and no i’m not mad because joel died, he absolutely deserved to. joel was by no means a good person and people tend to forget that because he’s the main character saving this girl but he hurt a lot of people and i think he deserved it. as much as i loved joel i can’t say his death was unexpected it was just the question of how. and i think his death was fine. he had literally no option but to go with abby because he would’ve died there and then by zombies if he didn’t go. but you play for 13 hours as ellie getting revenge for her father figure that was murdered in front of her and then you wake up for day 4 and jesse immediately dies, tommy gets pinned, ellie looks as if she’s about to get shot and then boom. you switch abby. who you play as for the next 9-10 hours of the game. i physically had to stop for a bit after the switch because it was so **** stupid. the only part that saved abby’s section was yara and lev who are by far the most interesting characters in that game. them and the seraphites kind of ways are very interesting to hear about and see. the rat king boss fight is also really intense and enthralling and i can’t say i was expecting that. as well as day 3 with abby when you get to the seraphite island and make it to yara and lev’s mom to find out she’s dead and then have to escape the island in hopes of getting away from both scars and wlf is really fun and exciting. but that first day as abby is truly miserable. they present it as if it’s an entire other game and start from scratch with a brand new storyline 12 hours into a game you thought was already getting a bit repetitive; but for the sake of ellie and to see how she got out you kept going. and those flashback placements.. my god. you have a day full of action you’re psyched for the next exhilarating thing and boom you’re in a museum with joel. it’s a real turn and while i loved seeing joel it felt out of place and just there for the sake of being there. also the ellie storyline of revenge is bad but also let’s go kill all of these people one by one brutally for information about someone we’ll end up sparing is extremely confusing.

    overwhelming positives:
as i said yara and lev’s storyline really shined and made the game for me. hearing about what they’ve been through and lev’s backstory is so so interesting and always had me wanting more. the visuals and atmosphere were stunning and you feel as if you were really in a post apocalyptic version of the areas. i also loved the combat mechanics and the stealth options. never have i seen a game do stealth better then this one. the ability to duck in a building and hide in a room after mowing people down or lunging into a field of grass and picking people off with your silenced pistol was so so cool and fun. day 2 as ellie really stuck out because of its nonstop combat and exploration of areas whether it be in hillcrest or the hospital there was always something new.

overall the game sticks out. for good and for bad. it will still resonate with me for making me so invested in something during a time where it was hard for me to enjoy life. and while it has some major flaws it’s still at the end of the day the last of us, not the one we all loved years ago but the one that showed us how brutally honest that world can be. it’s an extremely raw and emotional game that should be seen as it is. it’s not groundbreaking it’s not horrendous. it’s the last of us part 2.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just finished The Last of Us part 2 and was totally disappointed.
The only nice thing I found and that I saved was the gameplay but only because I had fun.
I state that I was totally indifferent to the story and what was happening in the game, but I followed it all to see how horrible the writing was. The story is told in a horrible way unlike the first chapter, also the game becomes quite predictable with the situations that will happen to you during the game, for example you know that there will be a jump scare, enemies that will attack you, moments when the character falls and other situations such as finding resources before enemies I have bosses, safes and more. For a game that wants to be realistic it is full of forcing to move the plot forward and meaningless moments. For example Tommy who enters Seattle with the horse but when we arrive we find the gate closed and the power turned off, when with Ellie we go to the hospital from Nora and after capturing her we throw ourselves into the hole under both without a mask but the soldiers only notice that Nora does not have the mask, Nora who could give a false information to Ellie about where to find Abby since they were alone and that Nora would have transformed / died from spores, Jesse and Ellie separating while going to the aquarium, the map that falls to Ellie at the aquarium but no one notices even when they return to the theater, Ellie who knows why Abby killed Joel but in the game is not shown how he knows, Jerry Abby's father who should be younger than Joel during the first TLOU but who does not know how he became so good and can create the vaccine despite its alleged age does not correspond with his medical knowledge especially in a post-apocalyptic world, Abby and Lev who are going to the hospital and while crossing the bridge fall right into a building where there is a swimming pool still full of water, the part where Abby arrives at the hospital alone and the WLF soldiers ask him if she has arrived swimming and Abby replies that her boat has gone but checking the area there are no steps to get to new and the only passage to get there by boat has debris and barbed wire, Abby who is not killed several times because she is saved once by Manny, two by Yara, the farm where Ellie, Dina and JJ are that is poorly protected by bandits who could assault her and other forcing and meaningless scenes with which the plot manages to move forward. The enemy artificial intelligence is good but nothing as great as it seemed to me at first look. I didn't like the two The Last of Us and I don't care about their story, characters etc, but honestly I found the first chapter clearly superior on almost everything except the gameplay that in TLOU2 has improved assault her and other forcing and meaningless scenes with which the plot manages to move forward. This review is based on my personal and subjective experience. P.S. Excuse me for my bad English.

The game polarizes strongly. In my opinion, Naughty Dog still convinces with the gameplay elements and the graphics, but the story is much weaker compared to the predecessor.

This game is not as bad as the fans are saying it is. However, it's not as good as the critics are being paid to say it is. Visually and gameplay-wise, it's quite possibly the greatest game ever made. While the story is not the direction I would have taken it, I don't hate it. My big objection to the game comes in later. Visually and gameplay-wise, it's quite possibly the greatest game ever made. While the story is not the direction I would have taken it, I don't hate it. My big objection to the game comes in later. The first half of the game sees you playing as Ellie. All the moments you play as Ellie are fantastic, 10/10. You get set up with a great set of characters, some new some old. The pacing is perfect. It's intense, scary, and fun. That paired with the incredible visuals and gameplay makes for the greatest gaming experience ever. About 11 hours in you switch characters and start playing as the main enemy of the game, Abby. This character change is something that Naughty Dog should've mentioned before the game was released. From here the game falls quickly in quality. After being left on a cliffhanger with Ellie you're forced to play the next 7 hours as this character Abby. Not only is she a one-dimensional character, but the rest of the supporting characters in this section are also incredibly boring. The whole time you really just cant stop thinking about Ellie and the rest of the characters from the first half. While playing as Abby, you go back to the start of the game and play through the events from the enemy's point of view. In between, Naughty Dog tries to make you understand and like Abby's character more by adding unnecessary subplots of her saving useless characters and mixing in a bunch of playable cutscenes showing an extremely boring and cringe-worthy love story between her and another character. This makes the second half very tedious, and it almost feels like a chore to complete. Don't get me wrong, Abby's backstory is extremely important to the overall story, and ties in perfectly to the first game, but she's better off as a non-playable villain, not the main character for half of the most anticipated game in years. Overall, The Last of Us Part 2 is not a bad game and is worth playing through once, but it will come as a disappointment to die hard fans of the series. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Was really hesitant to play this game after I saw user reviews. Since it was on sale few weeks ago decided that it is worth the money and tried it out on PS5.
So in a sense would way that this game is not a 5.7 as users describe it. Also it is not a 93 as metacritic describes it. I gave it a 7 which is right in the middle of both.
Best part of this game is visuals. It is pin point to a smallest detail and I loved it, a breath taking display. Also "Naughty Dog" introduced a lot of configuration which should become standard in every game. Kudos to the team under technical stuff and designers. A fantastic job.
Now to a part that makes it 7. A story. It was a disrespect to a first game. It was full of plot holes and uncharacteristic decisions by Ellie, Tommy and Joel. Also what does a pregnant woman do in a battle field? It does not show that she is independent or strong. It just shows that she is stupid and does not care for a child. With all things a side, the story would have been acceptable if it was not for the last chapter which destroyed Ellie and Tommy as a characters. Speaking about Abby. She is not that bad. Not great and not terrible as well. Not much to say more...
To sum up, if it was a spin off, it would be 8-9 as a game, now it is 6-7 due to poorly written character story lines.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
