This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I did not read any of the spoilers but I did read all the hate online. I decided to play the game and make up my own mind. I enjoyed the game, I thought the story was solid, and I think it was a worthy successor to TLOU. I think everyone wanted a game where you keep playing as Joel and Ellie and continue on their story. They decided to throw things on their head by making you play half the game as the person you are trying to get revenge on for killing Joel. I wound up liking Abby and I thought her crew was ok. I do think there were too many characters overall in the game. The gameplay was fun, though having one open world section like Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and then the rest be linear was an odd choice.

I also found this game to not be as creepy or as scary as the first game, the enemies felt less threatening, maybe because as Ellie you had a knife the whole.

Motion capture, graphics, and voice acting were absolutely amazing.

Overall I think people were mad the game wasn't made how they wanted it. Its not amazing like the first game but it's a solid sequel. Then again I kind of liked Uncharted 3 more than 2 so maybe I'm the problem.

Hard to like, but it feels essential to the whole "last of us" story moving forward. I have some issues and questions with some elements in the game, but otherwise it was a complex, hard to swallow, and super divisive. All I wanted to feel as the credits were rolling was hope in a very desperate way.

This is not a great game but neither is bad, actually is not bad at all, judging by my experience is an immersive game that will make you think, more less like red dead redemption 2 . It shows that not all storys have a happy ending. i absolutly recomend to play it at least.

Even though I hated the storyline and narrative of the game, the game is a marvel for its generation. The game is worth playing. But if you do, be open-minded or else you fell in the statistics like I did.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Imo the story wasn't as good as the first one, and I'm confused about the ending like everyone else after my first playthrough. But I'm starting to appreciate it as I started to see it not just as a revenge story. I saw it as Ellie engaged in all those cruelties attempting to forgive Joel for what he did at the firefly hospital. Towards the end of her journey, Ellie realized how similar she had become to the very person she resented (and loved at the same time) and were possibly finally ready to forgive Joel. I'm not saying this justifies Ellie letting Abby live in their final encounter, but it could be one possible explanation. Gameplay-wise, amazing graphics, great atmosphere, absolutely adore the open-world section in Seattle, wish Naughty Dog had added more sections like that. In general, a decent game, I gave it 8/10. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Even tho there are things in this game I don’t like, especially the pacing, I still think it’s a great game. The graphics and gameplay is a 10/10 for me, while the story is a 7/10. To me the story starts of as 5/10, then it gets to a 7/10 and as we play as Abby it starts of as 6/10 and after some time the rest is 10/10. My main problem as I pointed out earlier was the pacing. It felt chaotic some times and I didn’t always feel what the scenes wanted me to feel. I personally loved Abby as a character. She had so many flaws (in a good way) and seeing her friends telling her that she was a piece of sh*t, and that her actions resulted in her losing almost everything and being tortured for months, I love that sh*t. I loved seeing her trying to get better and I loved seeing her grow as a person. Ellie to me was kinda boring at the start, but her story got better. Especially the last part, that sh*t was just greatness! Overall I understand why people didn’t like it, but I still enjoyed it and I hope the game will get the praise and respect it deserves for doing something bold as it did. As I said gameplay and graphics 10/10 and story 7/10. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I held off buying this after all the review bombing, making the assumption their pure volume meant the game had significant issues. But I relented and went in, eyes open to all the potential issues. Some of the story/dialog was certainly choppy ... but if you're gonna run a marathon, you're gonna have a few dud strides. I dont think the story is the mess some claim it to be. Abby's story and arc is quite good, if anything Ellie comes off as the more murderous. As others have said, the story runs too long and is overwritten but that's nothing an editor couldnt have fixed. It's not an SJW story and Lev is a thoughtful character. We also see the love and care Naughty Dog put into the game in every single pixel. The execution is superb. For that ND should be immensely proud. With a few cuts, the story could have been very strong BUT here's the main issue for me. This is the Last of Us 3, not 2. If we had another instalment with Joel and Ellie adventuring together as 2 then revenge to tie up the trilogy, it would have given players more time to come to the grips with Joel's demise. In any case, it's a good game and takes the player on a decent journey and is worth the price of entry. Expand

The gameplay does not have many new things, it is a mix of assets from the first game, Uncharted 4 and a few thing from Days Gone. I would say the only thing I didn’t like so much was playing half of the game with the other protagonist, because even though it adds a lot to the story, her gameplay is not as fun as playing with Ellie. Also I felt this game was a lot more ideological based than its predecessor, which is not necessarily bad, but it is something that in my opinion doesn’t match what The Last of Us. There were a few times that I felt the game was totally focused on social criticism. I think that is cool, when done well as something in details, or something not to explicit like saying “This is a social criticism”. But it was still not so annoying to spoil the actual point of the story line. Really liked how the devs developed the relations between the characters, like Ellie and Dina for example, or Abby and the kids. One thing that I can’t say I liked but I really admire, is that Naughty Dog was really daring and had no fear of simply killing characters we liked, and this happens multiple times in the game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I absolutely love every piece of this game where you play as Ellie. When I was forced to play as Abby I audibly said whilst alone in my room at about 4 AM, “I’m going to kill myself”. There are some of the best sequences of gameplay when the player is forced to play as Abby, yet I was pretty disinterested for most of the time. I spent essentially the whole time when forced to be Abby wanting to just be Ellie again. I don’t really love or hate the ending, but I honestly think the ending would have been more satisfying if Ellie either did not go out to find Abby again, or have her actually kill Abby. Expand

This game has 2 problems, the ending and the relationship between Elie and dina, not because they are lesbians, i actually like the idea but they remind you about it like every 5 minutes And the ending feels like the developers said "we can't make the ending

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The sequel is never as good as the original, but that doesn't mean The Last Of Us 2 is a bad game. 2013's The Last of Us is arguably the greatest game of all time, it was always going to be incredibly difficult for part two to live up to that standard. For the most part it did, but some design choices made key story elements fall flat on their face and the game does overstay it's welcome a little bit because of this. Story (5/10). Sound & Visual (10/10), Gameplay (9/10).

Story (5/10): I like what they tried to do with the story, it was just told in the wrong order. It was like reading all the even chapters in a book then going back and reading all the odd chapters. Ultimately I didn't care for Abby's part of the story because i already knew how it ended. There was no reason for me to be invested in the side characters (Owen, Mel, Manny, Lev, and Yara) in her arc, so the relationships she was developing didn't matter. The pivotal dynamic between Ellie and Abby also didn't matter for half of the story because we knew where it ended prior to half of it being told, it just meant that Abby's story felt like filler.
Then there's Joel's death. I don't think there is a single legitimate fan that didn't think this would happen, but damn did it miss the mark. It's very transparent that they were trying to reach the same heights as Sarah's death in part one to shock the player into being motivated. However, there was no payoff with Joel dying, when it happened my first thought was 'oh well, Joel is dead I guess, right what's next'. It didn't make me stop and wonder what I had gotten myself into like Sarah's death did. The story would have had so much more impact if I cared for why Abby wanted to kill Joel before it happened, not retroactively filling it in through flashbacks.
The game should have started with the zebra scene, where Abby's dad gets called back to the hospital to perform the surgery on Ellie, to then cut to Abby walking through the hospital only to see the Fireflies and ultimately her dad after Joel had gotten to the operating room. The rest of the flashbacks for both Abby and Ellie can then be used to create the first chapter to establish what occurred in the five years between Ellie's rescue and Joel's death. The end of Chapter 1 still culminates in Joel's death, but at least we would have a reason to care about it.
After Joel's death the story should then have been told in chronological order switching from Ellie day 1 to Abby day 1 and so on. It is an intertwining story that was told as if it was linear and that's the disappointment.

Sound and Visual (10/10): There is isn't anything you can fault with the sound and visual design, it is brilliant. From the terrifying clickers, bloaters and shamblers that you can hear in the distance, to the Seraphites' hunting whistles becoming more desperate as you kill them off or the melancholy backing tracks and the rain and thunderstorms, this game has absolutely marvellous sound design. The visuals are the same with dilapidated, soaring skyscrapers, thunderstorms and burning villages, to serene mountainous landscapes, to realistic facial and body movements this game is a treat to look at.

Gameplay (9/10): There's not much new here, but that's fine, it was already an enjoyable gameplay loop. if you enjoyed the gameplay from the first game then you won't be surprised here. The addition of the stalkers and the dogs significantly changed how the stealth mechanics worked, but they were used far too infrequently to matter. At times it felt like there were endless numbers of enemies coming from literally nowhere (especially in the last chapter), and the hyped infected vs human vs player battles were virtually non-existent and always resulted in you still fighting a large number of enemies. Though none of this stopped me from enjoying the moment to moment gameplay.

The only reason I am giving this a 8 and not a 10 is because I feel like the Santa Monica part ruined it for me. I wish Ellie would have just stayed with JJ and Dina and the story ended there. The Last of Us Part II is quite the complicated game. First things first, the graphics look out of this world. The fact that it’s running on a PS4/PS4 Pro and it looks like a next gen game, is just amazing. Now, subjectively, this games story isn’t badly written, it’s just very badly paced and and feels like it isn’t in the correct order. Reasons being that in most story’s you have a rising climax. In this game there is a rising climax, and at the midpoint where the rising climax gets even bigger, in this game the rising climax drops down completely at the midpoint, and is like this for a good few hours, until it immediately rises back up again. It goes up and down a few time’s before the ending, making this game, from a subjective standpoint, bad. But, for some reason, for me that didn’t effect me. I was still engaged with this game, I still wanted to play it, I wanted to complete my goal as Ellie. I was utterly and completely hooked on this game. And, to this games credit, once I finished this game and the credits rolled.. I sat there, motionless. I didn’t feel sad, nor did I feel anger, happiness or anything of the sorts. I felt empty. I felt completely empty. And no other game I have played made me feel this. And, also this game is by far the most emotional i’ve been playing a game. I cried and sobbed A LOT, and if you loved the first game like me, chances are you’ll feel emotional all through out the story also. Another big issue this game faced was its pacing. It’s all over the place. Like I mentioned. At around the mid way point, instead of the action getting more and more, it dropped, and you became less gripped by the story. The first 10 or so hours of the game will have you gripped, and you won’t want to stop playing, but after that you dont feel as engaged as previously. I feel if the game was structured in a different way, it would have been much more fun to play, and have you gripped through out the whole story.

Moving away from story. The gameplay in this is absolutely phenomenal. Every encounter you play whether it be against humans or the infected, you always have this feeling of dread or fear while you hide (or go guns blazing, depending on your play style) around the tall grass or under the cars as you try to get a sneak attack on someone, or something. The gameplay is like the first game, but better. This game flows much better, the gun play feels better, stealth has been built up on, and like the previous game, it gives you the feeling that you are in an apocalypse with little ammo.

Of course, there is a moment that has divided the fan base. I won’t tell you what to believe, but all I will say is power through to the end, it way change your thoughts, or solidify your thoughts. If you’re a fan of this game, you’re either going to love it, or despise it. I happen to be the former, it’s a wonderful piece of art and one of my favourite games, as well as its predecessor. If this game wins GOTY 2020, I’d say that it’s well deserved. Well done naughty dog, you did it again.
