The story has got some very strong parts but I've got a problem with the lack of choice you're being offered as a gamer. At all key moments in the story the only way to move forward is Naughty Dog's way. This makes the story completely linear. You can clearly tell some of the people making the narrative decisions have an overly strong Politically Correct/ Woke view on life and society. With other media like film it's easier to accept or just reject a certain point of view, especially if you don't appreciate the quality, style or story. I would never watch the all-female Ocean's or Ghostbuster **** shows. Mostly because the quality just isn't there.

TLOU2 is different. The story in my opinion is both hit and miss. If gamers were given choices at key moments, this game would have been a masterpiece. Despite the fact Naughty Dog has eliminated the option to choose completely the game is still very good and at times great. The very best developers like Rockstar and CD Projekt Red understand that simple yet important aspect. I think the people at Naughty Dog could have made a Masterpiece with as little as two moments where the gamer is given an essential narrative choice. Because they have failed to understand this or were to stubborn to offer the option TLOU2 has become more controversial instead of their greatest hit.

The Last Of Us ll is a sad and shocking story and has a sour ending that the community did not expect, all the sections of this game are excellent, graphics, mechanics and the technical part are outstanding. The story is good but it does not surpass the first game and it has plot holes and Joel's death is forced and there are many coincidences in this part, and the rest of the story is good but complicated to accept. In this game there is a new cast of characters, a great example of this is Abby, who is the character who kills Joel and we play a large part of the game with her and the game itself makes us empathize with it, and it does not succeed. At all since we understand that she also suffered but we, being linked to the first game, remember that she was the one who killed Joel, that connection that the game wants is not fulfilled, her Abby would have reflected on the death of Since she killed seraphites and people from her own group just to protect Lev and for her to see that Joel really wasn't bad and that he could understand these actions, if they had shown us this they would at least achieve more player acceptance towards This character, in addition to the forced death of Joel, the plot holes that I leave and that we do not empathize with Abby, the rest of the game is good, it is a game that deals with the cycle of revenge, it is sad, it gives us an emotional shock He for the turns that the game gives us and the end is sour and leaves us shocked and with a total shock. The end of the game is very controversial since many people do not like it, but if you analyze it and reflect on it, it is a good ending, at least for me. In the other sections the game is excellent and beautiful, leaving the story aside.

    Good Points:
    - Gameplay
    - Mechanics
    - Graphics
    - Development of scenarios
    - Story 8/10

    Bad Points:
    - Plot gaps
    - Joel's death forced
    - Matches in Joel's death
    - The game can't get us to empathize with Abby
    - Abby's part gets a little slow

For me, this is the best action and combat that has ever existed for a third person game, in fact I would go as far to say it is the best gameplay of any game of all time. This game really stretches the limits of what a game can be. This is without a doubt a next gen game not a ps4 game. The graphics are spectacular.

Naughty Dog have really set the bar with the level design as well, the level design is so complex and every encounter can be played out 5-6 different ways.

Now the story. Without spoiling it. It just didn't resonant with me, it was so dark. Too dark. The story focuses on revenge but also redemption which I think a lot of people miss the mark about. However, the problem is, can some acts be redeemed? For me, no. Due to this, I think some of the characters remain unlikable due to their actions and I could not forgive them and I felt like Naughty Dog were trying to force you to like certain characters due to their struggles but I could not forgive. That is just me though. Everyone will experience the story differently. This game really made me question my morality or what is right and wrong. I think everyone will interpret this game differently which is another strength of the story. However my final closing thought of the story is, not only did I not really enjoy it and it didn't win me over, the concepts the game and how it tries to test you with are actually not that deep and I do not think anything the story does could be classed as 'new' or 'ground breaking'.

This game does not deserve the hate it has received, you can't dislike a story so much that you ignore all of the pros of this game. That is why you have to take user reviews with a pinch of salt, or in this case a truck load of salt.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. DISCLAIMER: We don't have to agree about this. Honestly, a beautiful thing about books, movies, or games is the discourse between those with differing opinions. One can say that The Last of Us Part 2 is the greatest game of all time while one says that The Last of Us Part 2 is a game riddled with inconsistencies and confusing story decisions. Also, I will be going into story spoilers, so keep that in mind as you read. And yes, I have beaten the first game and this one; I'm not just a mindless drone who follow what the critics say or what the users say. Ready? Here we go...

If you haven't played this game, and you clicked on this hoping there weren't actual spoilers, let me summarize my overall general thoughts into this paragraph. The Last of Us Part 2 is a remarkable game that has the technical, emotional, and thematic prowess of a well-crafted film. Are there things wrong with it? I'd say so. But, does this underpin the phenomenal aspects of this game that make it well worth your time? I can't say so.

Gameplay: In short, this game feels and plays wonderfully. The new additions are excellent in how they allow the player to diversify tactics. Nonetheless, I do feel that this game can get repetitive. As fun as the stealth sections are, there's hardly diversions from the formula except for a few key sections. When I was able to call over the infected to fight with the WLFs and sneak by, I was impressed by how creative the section was. When I had to fight just a bunch of scars in another grassy plain again, I was not impressed that I had to do the same thing over. Combined with the games 20+ hour story, this gets tiring over time. I know this is a stealth/survival-horror game, and this is a well-made one at that, but I do wish the game had more originality in its gameplay. 7/10

Visuals/Music: As expected, The Last of Us Part 2 looks and sounds amazing. Is it Naughty Dog's best looking game? I'd have to play Uncharted 4 again as that game was extremely impressive, but this one has breathtaking moments. From the facial expressions to the backgrounds, this game has so much effort put into it, and I can't express how much of that feeds into the emotional aspect of this game. When the game wants you to feel something, nine times out of ten it will succeed with a lot of it coming from the game's music or visuals. That's how amazing it is. 9/10

Story: Alright, let's do this. This is where people will either praise or trash the absolute crap out of this game. Where do I stand? I'm gonna do a touch of trashing and a heap of praising. So, let's start off with what I think doesn't work. I can't say it any better than a review I found online where it stated that there was a part that felt like a 10 hour sidequest. I love the story overall, but I can't help but feel that the pace of the game in general does not work as well as the first. Mixed in with that gameplay issue I had before, some parts of the game were a chore to get through. And yes, I'm sure it's a chore for Ellie and Abby to get through these sections as characters, but the game hardly engages me in these sections as it would in other parts. Also, regarding the switch in main characters, the game kind of asks you to flip flop your emotions, if that makes sense. While I actually think the game succeeds in making you sympathize for Abby, it's a complex thing that takes time to develop, so in some ways, I understand why it turns others off even if I was invested. So what did I like? Almost everything else. The way this story moves in order to make its point is at some points genius. Joel's death is saddening especially since he was a likable character; but, think about what Joel did in the first game. He murdered people including those who were about to uncover the cure, even if his reasons to do so was the entire backbone of the first story. Joel's death makes sense in this messed up world. The way that enemies will call out the names of the fallen is a fascinating way to highlight the consequences of your actions. This isn't just a "violence is bad" story, this is a "value of human life" story which I think is far more interesting considering how it ties into the main characters. Ellie and Abby both do some messed up stuff but when it all comes down to their final fight, they both become better people and understand each other. Joel and Ellie both do some messed up stuff but when it comes down to their final real conversation, they both become better people and understand each other. This game doesn't dishonor Joel and Ellie's relationship, because how it ties into Abby and Ellie's relationship is the most significant element of this game. I'm impressed with how this story portrays a coherent theme even in some bold story decisions. 8/10

You may not like The Last of Us Part 2, and that's okay. But, I highly encourage you to give this a try and create your own opinion. 8/10

The story I don't see why there is so much hate from everyone against it, I enjoyed it, not quite as much as tlou1. I do think it dragged on slightly too long, at the least the last 5 hours or so and went back and forth in it's revenge plot one too many times. There were two flashback sequences that just involved too much walking around and talking I found particularly boring at times as well. Overall it was worth the $80 I paid.

Naughty Dog has for the most part succeeded in the difficulty of making a compelling sequel. Their use of psychology throughout the intertwined narrative of both Ellie and Abby cannot be passed off as “lazy writing”. To make the player walk 5 miles in the shoes of the villain Abby after you as Ellie have wreaked revenge soaked havoc on her friends and faction for the death of Joel isn’t something I’ve experienced in gaming. It’s clever and effective. By the end of a 25-30 hour campaign, you have 2 characters on opposing sides of the same coin in a story that deals with not just revenge but the morality of right and wrong and the effects of action and consequence.
The motion capture is fantastic, the Ellie and Joel flash back scenes are beautiful. New characters are charming but be warned, this is not a story for the faint of heart. Emotions will be tested, your heart will be pulled out whilst you get kicked in the guts.
Gameplay- not much new in terms of innovation but a more effective jump button allows for some new traversal options as well as squeezing through gaps to make those encounters a little more exciting.
Prone position has been added which can give players a tactical edge.
A plentiful arsenal. Both players have a well balanced array of weapons to master.
Upgrades system has been simplified and crafting and scavenging remain a key component.
Environments are very detailed and beautiful to look at. There’s the photo mode if you are so inclined.
    New game plus.
Array of difficulty settings for those inclined to punish themselves.
Accessibility options are huge for players, I have seen visual and audio adaptation demos. I know that these settings are something that the disabled gamers have praised.

I can see why this game has had some negative scores, yes it’s a hard pill to swallow. Yes Joel is killed early on. Yes Abby’s character model can be distracting at first, you need to suck it up and follow the story, get into it, listen and feel. It’s the only way the game will have meaning. Expectations will be subverted. I hated that phrase on Star Wars last Jedi, which I’m still not happy with but it does work here.
If part 3 is made I will give this a 9. I wasn’t 100 percent satisfied with the ending. I would have liked a little more on what the future held for Ellie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's not that the game is as bad as most people filling in these negative reviews trying to tell it is. Rather they're caused by some questionably-positive reviews from the press clashing with all sorts of EdGy internet influencers whining about "SJW content" in the game, which is there, but constitutes less than 1% of the entire experience. it is a very different game from what the original Last of Us was, moving from a classic road-trip structure to something more controversial. Joel's death is actually a very strong kickstart for the hero's (and player's) motivation. I didn't like this idea at first, but the more I played the more I was finding myself thinking that it was actually quite interesting. Something of that reminded me of Gurren Lagann, i guess.
The story is actually not bad at all, and it doesn't fail to provide you with some actual "grey moral". Can't say that I started loving Abby as a character but I definately learned to understand her better. The ending is actually pretty neat. Some light symbolism, some blood. Maybe the only section that really felt weird and forced was the house level. Feeling like everyone giving this game less than 7 points is rather quite young (try 9-16 y.o.) or just brainwashed and be like "I WaNnA Be EdGy and UgHgh SjWs ArE CoNQUeRiNg Us". It is legitemately a very good game and a tech-masterpiece, with nice mechanics, occasionally clever writing(because sometimes it does feel a bit clunky), cool visuals, very nice game design and many other features. And yes, the side-characters are quite weak but really, who gives a sh.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The 8/10 isn't swayed by anyone elses score or the overall rating. (For comparison I rated Last of Us part 1 as a 9/10.)... I think it's not okay to rate a game 10/10 just to try and raise the overall score because others rate it 0/10 to sabotage. Two wrongs don't make a right.

So here we go: I fully admit that this game is a very long, very emotional rollercoaster.
It will not be for everyone, that much is very certain. There were events in the game's story I didn't like. But all of the story feels like something I can believe. The people in it are, just like in the first one, very authentic feeling people. They aren't perfect, or absolutes. They don't always have the same mindsets, as their moods can change, they don't have perfect lines that feel scripted. It flows very similar to life.

So when many say that the characters act untrue to themselves; well... I never felt like there was one specific way the characters acted in the first one either. Even Joel went (in the first one) from "I don't care why you are being transported" to offering guitar lessons. But in this one, people are absolutely shaped by the events of the last one.. and the events of this one.

Hell, on some bad days I can be a complete douche and act on mood and emotion, while most days I make my decisions based on reason. Same with these characters. That's why the writing holds up very well to the first one. I would have hated the characters to be reduced to "stereotypes of Joel and Ellie from the first one" a whole lot more.

If at any point you stop playing when it hits you with the lows (like the anger you WILL feel if you're invested at all) you will end up loathing the game. Early in the game I had to stop and.. recover overnight to keep going. Later on in the game I thought I was at the ending and felt very put off and didn't want to keep going right then. But I opened my mind again, let the rest of the story come around and... it did wrap up more satisfyingly. NOT in a perfectly traditional ending though. It's ... anything but a complete answer. Or completely satisfying. But I think it left me with just as much food for thought than the first one. After all, I hated the ending of the first one right after it had happened. But the more I thought about it, the more I found beauty in it. In the plot going for something that's not a "given" cliché that every story should have done, but a very human ending instead.

If you adopt a mindset by an event in the game (or pre-determinately hate the game after seeing the leaks for example) and won't stay open to any further storytelling, close your mind from giving the game any more chances, that's it; Your mind IS made. You've decided. I encourage going on, as though we aren't used to games making us feel outraged, disgusted and sad ON PURPOSE, you ARE supposed to be feeling those feelings. There-in lies the beauty of what the game does.

You insisting on the other person being the bad guy is EXACTLY what the characters are feeling. They do not want to hear or know the other persons reasons. They will not entertain the idea that the other person was just like them, on their revenge. But the game's plot asks us to do so, forcing us to play as the person we do not want to identify with at first. We don't want to hear Abby out, give her any room, hear her reasons. "F her"...
But if we do hear it out, there's a moment in the game where Ellie has actually done more bad to her, than the supposed "villain of the game" has done to her.

In the end, they will both find some forgiveness in them... but their revenges cost both of them a whole lot more than they would have lost if they had just let it go. But they couldn't. It wasn't an option and they needed closure.

"If I ever were to lose you, I'd surely lose myself" they sang. Ellie did lose herself for a long while. For Joel losing Ellie's was the only thing he had feared in the past 25 years and while he selfishly decided on not losing her, to a potential vaccine, he did end up "losing her" in trust... but was about to maybe be forgiven. If he hadn't perished before it, because of the actions that he took to people in the first one. People, who also had their loved ones they would do anything for.

It's a fantastic set of 2 games that made me think a whole lot about human psychology and mental health when faced with trauma. Not many post-apocalyptic stories touch on what such events would do to a mind.

The polish, worldbuilding, acting is all top notch.

The reasons I rate it lower than the first one, aren't really so much in the plot, but pacing.
The first one felt a lot tighter as a storytelling package. Idk how the many pieces of this one would have been re-arranged better, but at times if felt disjointed. Especially when "starting again" as Abby after going so far with Ellie. The content that's there works though, but might've benefitted from taking turns between the two or.. idk. No deal breaker for me though.

Yes joel dies, I hated that, but you still play as him throughout the game but in the past. I dont see why people tripped so hard. I think this game could have been an uncharted lost legacy game and neil should have wrote a better story to keep joel alive so the series can strive and continue its glory. Done after this great game with naughty dog. I wouldn't want to play another last of us game. Expand

No the story isn't a dumpster fire and nor is it a masterpiece. As someone who thought the first story was good, the second is similar in that it is a okay story that is told somewhat competently. I can write paragraphs on why some of the common complaints I've heard aren't that big of a deal, but I'll digress for the sake of conciseness. The main issue with the story is the pacing. There are huge swaths of gameplay inbetween the progression of the plot. The first game had the benefit of being about the relationship between Ellie and Joel, where the interactions between the two during gameplay is also plot relevant. Part two is about revenge, and while one could say that the plot is furthered by her slaughter of countless people just to get her revenge, this is a lot less compelling than watching a relationship develop in front of you. The former is more amorphous and harder to see the changes in her character. I know a lot of people like to think that the longer a game, the better it is because you are getting more entertainment for your money. But I think this game would have benefited if it cut content, such that it can tell a tighter story and not have gameplay slow the pacing of its narrative to a boring crawl. But the story takes risks, which I respect and the dialogue is well written. The characters do lack the charm that Ellie had in the first game, but they have a grounded like-ability to them. I can believe that these are real people and not just characters in a video game.

On the gameplay side of things, it's very similar to the first game and boy do Naughty Dog know how to make engaging gameplay. The game makes sure that you are getting new weapons crafting recipes and enemy types to ensure that you aren't doing the exact same thing over and over. Couple that with the fact that the layout for each encounter is meaningfully different and you'd be hard pressed to get bored of the combat during its run. Contrary to the narrative, the gameplay justifies its length.

All in all the story was okay. Maybe a 6/10 if I were to be more on the critical side. But it had a point to it and a message to say. They didn't make it to please everyone and if we want to say that games are art (as I believe) then that's okay. But the gameplay more than makes up for it. It is fun even if they apparently don't like to use that word.

Great gameplay, and great graphics but the story misses the mark on how the player should feel on 2nd half of the game. But the 2nd half was still got me hooked to go on playing when most of the time I would have stopped.

I only put a 8 because Metacritic wouldn’t let me post it with my real score. That would be a big fat Zero! Total insult to the Last of Us! Please do not waste your time or money on this piece of garbage! I’m actually insulting garbage by comparing it to this terrible game!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't often review games but in this case I needed to. When I played the first game I was very unimpressed until I reached Jackson midway through the game. I noticed the bond between Joel and Ellie and was bewildered by the attention to detail. No other zombie game really pays close attention to how an event like a zombie apocalypse can change a like-minded individual. Joel kills so many people before and during the events of the game it's ridiculous and it's all capped off by one of the best endings to any game. The Last of Us 2 is not as good as the first that's just not something it can be. It is however a very innovative game when it comes to the portrayal of enemies and the gore effects. It also nails the story I could really care less if you agree with me. Joel's death was an inevitability as one of the patrols his job is to kill all infected on his route and to identify and trade with other groups to keep Jackson thriving. When he and Tommy meet Abby they are forced to trust her and retreat to her camp because of the horde. As said earlier Joel killed a lot of people and it was only a matter of time before he crossed someone and when he did it wasn't going to be pretty. I say these things because common complaints are that Joel should have known better or he should've had a heroes death but there is no such thing in The Last of Us. Joel's death affected me probably the exact way it was supposed to. I've never been so onboard for revenge I remembered the people who did that to Joel and they were always looming I'd always hope I'd be running into them soon. Once I got to the Abby story line I was about as upset as everyone else I got to the chapter ground zero and took a break for a couple days and came back fresh. I finished Abby's storyline and as much as it's presence in the story is a blemish on the game the 2nd half is far better than the first half. What I would have done with the Abby story is make it an optional campaign upon finishing the game sort of like separate ways from resident evil 4. The end leaves something to be desired but I think it's fine. Please don't review bomb this game just play it if you feel like playing it and give it the score you would actually give it. Review bombers are a plague on the entire gaming community and makes it very difficult for some people to find a resource for whether they should buy a game or not and undermines everything the devs worked on (yes the ones who were on crunch to bring you the game as fast as possible). Before you say "0/10 is my score for the game" this game isn't a 0/10 not by a long shot games like Big Rigs, Ride to Hell or Rambo are games worthy of that score.

    Pros:
    *Combat
    *Graphics
    *Attention to detail
    *Enemy behavior and personality
    Cons:
    *Poor use of Abby's storyline
    *Poor ending

It's a conflicting game, that forces the player into uncomfortable situations and brutal scenes. Let's start off by saying that this game looks incredible, with environments that almost look like real life and characters where you can see distinctive hair strains, which is insane! Even small touches, like grass blowing with the wind, or how the blood from enemies mixes with water puddles, elevates this game beyond its competition. Likewise, the artwork is magnificent, striking a balance of gruesome realism with bleek environments and horrifying infected, and beautiful landscapes of grass fields and oceans, much thanks to the astonishing lighting. If we're talking presentation, music has also improved immensely from the previous game, relaxing the player in somber moments and hitting harder in intense scenes. Gameplay has also improved, with bigger levels, more weapons, more choices. New mechanics include rope swinging, wall gaps and even a jump button (!). The previously mentioned bigger levels mixed with the new mechanics makes the gameplay more complex and fun, though it could've been improved even more to blow the player away. The game also throws in dogs, that can sniff your scent and forces the player to move around in new manner, though if you really like dogs, this might take a toll on you. We're the game starts to split one's appreciation of the game is in the story. The story takes some bold and adventurous turns, making the experience harrowing and frightening at some occasions. Right from the getko, the game let's you know that it will not be like the predecessor and takes some big risks. It asks morally ambiguous questions that can make the player divided about some choices they have to make. The ending leaves a lasting impression on the player, and the more you think about it, the deeper its meanings become. The actors too do an incredible job, with standouts being reprising actors Ashley Jonson as Ellie and Troy Baker as Joel, and also newcomer Laura Bailey stealing the show as Abby. The game also makes the characters perform questionable actions and make the player experience them. The game isn't as concerned about what the player wants to do, as it is about how the characters react and behave in those situations, which makes for more claustrophobic and uncomfortable moments that don't give the player any choice, which is in this game's advantage. Where the game faults is in its pacing. The game shifts time spans very often and sometimes it can feel like a mess. Certain scenarios or time jumps occur and you wonder why that didn't happen before/after. This isn't the case for some time cuts, but one storyline in particular has this issue. It makes the enjoyment and surprises less interesting in some places. At some points the game can feel drawn out and last way too long, most notable in the middle section after the intro. Some of the new characters also feel underdeveloped. Dina is interesting as a character, but you don't learn a whole lot about her dreams and aspirations. Same goes for Jesse, who is underused and could've had some better writing in his presence. The story isn't bad, it's actually really great sometimes, it just needed some more cooking in the oven. It's also sad too see the multiplayer not returning. As all assets and development moved over to singleplayer, the online playing field got scrapped. While I think it's more important to see development improve and focus on the singleplayer, it's still disappointing to not see multiplayer included. In conclusion, The Last of Us Part II is a conflicitng experience. A lot of improvements and tweeks have been added to make the experience better, especially in gameplay and artistry, but at the same time the story is a mixed bag, with some incredible bright spots and some other spots that fall flat, due to pacing issues. Still, this is a great game that I would recommend to most people, because the experience over all is still enjoyable and fun and the discussions that can come from people talking about this game will engage people maybe even more to this game. While not as good and engaging as the first game, it still provides a lot of fun and interesting choices that will make the player question what is going to happen next and their own morales. I commend Naughty Dog for trying something new and different, even though they didn't always stick the landing. Expand

Expand

    Cons:
-Bori-iii-ing gameplay while not in combat. You just walk and look for supplies. The small number of interesting puzzles. The game could be twice as short and it would be a lot better.
    - Feminist agenda

All in all, I'd give it 7.5/10. I understand why all this anger and hate are taken out on this game, but I don't think that it actually deserves it.
