Middle part was too long and took me out of the experience.. kind of like rdr2 which made me play Marston. I think the point could have been made a lot faster and most of the Owen flashbacks didnt add much to the plot. Didnt need as long to be able to understand why ellie made the right choice in the end. Ending was very satisfying and hopefully part 3 will continue with a more mature ellie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a nuanced masterpiece. The story isn't as airtight as the first part but it pushes the boundaries of the videogame medium. That is why, like Death Stranding did with gameplay, this story doesn't cater to the prestablished conception of what a narrative should be. Graphics are amazing. Sound can go from chilling to soothing. Seriously, this is a must. Expand

Just because they killed Joel? he needed to die, because he **** up the humanity, just for 1 life, so I'm ok with his dead, it was heartbreaking? yeah it was, it was a roller coaster of emotions, this game won't make you laugh,it will make u suffer, because this is a vengeance. I'll give a 9 because the history sometimes fells pushed, and you don't make a "click" on some characters but otherwise that, the game is perfect. I hope there's a Part 3 ,they have a pretty good character like Abby and her travel to find the fireflies. Expand

I just finished the game and I thought it was excellent. I enjoyed the bleak story and the settings, graphics, sounds, the acting, dialogue and action were all first-rate. It's one of the few games that I'm likely to play again a second time although with the size of the game I feel like I more than got my money's worth.

My main frustration was just that for some areas midway through the game the rules had changed from what I'd learnt in the earlier parts meaning I missed collectables or spent a long time trying to get into a room that was not possible at that point.

Looking back I can't believe how many memorable environments and situations there were. It's a great game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Non Spoiler Review: If you enjoyed the last of us 1, then you would probably enjoy this game too. The graphics are amazing, the soundtrack is phenomenal, and the gameplay is an continuation of the first game. I would recommend playing on Survivor since I feel you can get the full experience of surviving the land of the last of us on this difficulty. I would say lower difficulty made the game significantly less fun. The scavenging is limited in survivor, the enemies AI are more random and unpredictable. Once they see you, they hit hard. Most of the time overwhelming you or one-shoting you. There are bosses in this game that are extremely fun, makes me want to replay for those bosses alone (again on Survivor difficulty). For the non-spoiler review of the story, it reminded me a lot of the Last of Us 1 story in a lot of ways. Last of us 1 and the Last of us 2 can both be described as tragic stories. You will see a lot of things that will make you uncomfortable but its there to tell a story about Ellie. In the end, I was emotionally invested, and felt the same as I did in the end of The Last of Us 1. I would give both games 9/10s

    SPOILERS
The story elements reminded me a lot of the original last of us 1. Joel original goal was to get Ellie to the fireflies to be the cure for humanity but took Ellie away so he wouldn't have to experience the death of another child. In Last of us 2, Ellie's original goal was to murder the people who murdered Joel. In the end, she forgives Abby for what she did and lets her go.

Both games had a goal only to be turned over. The controversy of the ending again reminds me of the Last of Us 1. Many people were confused and upset for what Joel did. Now, its Last of Us 2 time to experience the same backlash. Some people call the Last of us 2 pointless but the Last of Us 1 was a pointless tale too. Joel was delivering the last hope for humanity but decided to keep her so he can have a daughter again.

The Last of us 2 is tragic story. It shows how damaging selfishness can be and how important forgiveness is. Throughout the story, Ellie was losing everyone around her. Her actions led to the destruction of her relationship with Dina, the death of Jessie, the injuries on Tommy, and her losing her ability to play the guitar (in some aspect, ill come back to it. ). On the final battle, She got the upper hand on Abby but ultimately decided not to kill her as Ellie gets a memory of her last moment with Joel.

Despite Joel ambition to save Ellie. The action destroyed their relationship with each other, Ellie wanted to sacrifice herself for the cure. She saw what Joel did as devastating. It took 4 years for Ellie to finally forgive Joel and understand why he did what he did. That reminder of forgiveness is where Ellie finally realize that killing Abby wouldn't fix anything. Killing Abby won't bring Joel back, won't fix her relationships, won't bring back her friend. The path for revenge lead her to a destructive path.

Now talking about Abby, very similar events occur. After the death of her father by the hands of Joel. She couldn't stop thinking about her revenge. She spent her time training and looking for Joel hindering her relationship with Owen. After she killed Joel, Abby lost all her friends. She gets the people involve with her hurt such as Yara who sacrificed herself to save Lev and Abby. She was then kidnapped by slave traders where she was beaten and tortured for months. Her relationship with the young boy Lev brought her back to reality (sounds familiar?) . She learned to forgive Ellie and move on. It just took Ellie a few more months to get to that point.

The ending is very emotional. It ends with Ellie trying to play her guitar with her missing fingers, only to find out she can't. She lost everything trying to kill Abby, even the last gift Joel gave her. I don't think its all bad in the end, since Ellie can learn to play the Guitar the other way. Like playing the guitar from a different perspective. That's just a hypothesis parallel on my part.

The ending is meant to be ambiguous because its up to the player to decide why Ellie did the things she did. Like how it was up to the player to decide why Joel did the things he did.

I LOVED this game. I laughed, I cried, I sweated, I was pissed off and I felt EXHAUSTED by the end of this campaign. The feeling this game left me was depressing but thats how it should be. To all the so called Last of us "fans" who had a problem with the story, I recommend you go back and replay the first one. "The Last of Us" is not a single narrative nor just a survival zombie game. It has always been parallel stories of Man vs Man and the branching repercussions of ones actions. The humility and struggles of being a human in a world that is cruel and punishing has always been at the core of The Last of Us. Part two elevates this concept by putting you in the shoes of another person trying to cope in this complex and mentally taxing world. I can understand why people had a hard time liking this game due to the character you play as but I genuinely believe that if you did not understand why Naughty Dog went the direction they did, then you never understood the first game to begin with. A cruel world creates cruel stories. Now I'm not saying this a perfect game, but for people to write this game off with a 0/10 without logically reinforcing their opinions is sad and speaks volumes about the gaming community as a whole. Reading some of these reviews has lost me a few IQ points. Naughty Dog, thank you for bringing a nuanced and thought provoking sequel into the cultural zeitgeist. If you can sift through the thousands of nonsensical reviews you'll be sure to find people who honestly took the time to play the game whether they hated it or loved it.

I firmly believe and after having played the game 3 times, which is a very good game, its technical and sound section is perfect, its gameplay is as fun as the first, but this one perfects it excellently, the music is magical and always transmits everything a splendid feeling, the story, I think it is good, maybe it is not a masterpiece like the first The Last Of Us but it is very good, I understand that the player does not like it in the first instance, I hated it the first Once, but after playing it a second time and analyzing everything, I concluded that if it really transmits so many feelings to you and in such a faithful way, hate, courage, violence, sadness, tiredness, just magnificent. Maybe Abby's character is the worst of all, and that's what makes me give her a 9 instead of a 10 but I sincerely believe that Naugthy Dog did an excellent job for the rest. My only point against it is that Abby's development was not the best it could have been, maybe if they had presented him before seeing how he kills Joel, the player could have better sympathized with him.
In short, The Last of Us Part 2 is a very good game, I could say that it far exceeds the first The Last Of Us in most sections.
the only thing that remains just a little below is in the field of history, just a little.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Of US 2 is the most conflicting game I've ever played. At times I hated it and at times I loved it. I was completely split down the middle. The first game introduced me to two of the most deep and believable characters in any game I've ever played. I couldn't wait to be reintroduced to them again and I was but not in the way I expected. During my first playthrough I was angry, confused and heartbroken. I questioned everything about Joel's death and why it was done so fast and so brutally. I almost didn't want to continue after that moment but my care for Ellie kept me going. Playing as Ellie again was refreshing and seeing how much she has developed and grown was interesting. When the narrative switched back to Abby i was upset. I was so angry at this character, I wanted her to feel the pain I felt and i knew Ellie felt. I'll be honest playing as Abby didn't change my mind, I just wanted to end and see where Ellie ended up, but when the game finally concluded I realized something. I realized what the games message was, at least what it was to me. Love is blinding. Love makes us do the best and worst of things. My love for Joel and Ellie prevented me from seeing they were just people and just as damaged as Abby. In the world of The Last Of Us everyone has had to cross a moral line to survive and Joel and Ellie are no exception but the love I have for these characters made me biased. Naughty Dog masterfully challenged the players own moral compass in this game by showing how flawed even the main characters are. I've never went so deep in thought over a video game and this is why i appreciate it so much. This game has the most bright of moments and the most dark of moments and ends on a note of mystery. Obviously the visuals are stunning, acting is second to none and I wouldn't expect anything less from a Naughty Dog game. I recommend playing the game twice because the first playthrough so emotionally heavy and can effect your perception on all the themes this game is trying to present. I'll end by saying that I'm still torn by the events of The Last Of Us Part 2 but at the same time I'm appreciative of the authentic emotional and realistic connection I have to Joel and Ellie. I really hope there is a third game because I want to Ellie's story continue. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So I finished Last of Us Part 2 and I can't sleep. Like so many others I have too many thoughts and emotions in my head swirling right now and I think I understand the outrage and need to get my thoughts down. This is going to be long but I will avoid spoilers. To summarize: play this game at your own risk after playing the first one which can be traumatizing in its own right.

So lets start by setting aside the bigoted alt right movement who are attacking this game for similar reasons as Captain Marvel (yes LGBTQ characters make out and have sex in the game get over it).

Next point is that the original Last of Us came at a time when multi-player games and apocalyptic stories flooded the market. It changed how stories can be told in not just video games but movies. One could argue that several beloved movies such as Logan, Quiet Place, John Wick, Bird Box and many others wouldn't exist without it's inspiration. Same could be said for critically acclaimed story games like the new God of War, Red Dead Redemption 2, Uncharted 4, and even Spiderman PS4.

So obviously this franchise resonates with people and while people are criticizing the story for not having a point they are also criticizing it for having a political agenda. Neither are true. The directors and creators of this game said four years ago that making people uncomfortable was going to be the point of this game. They knew what they were doing. They knew people would be triggered. I think a lot of people are mad that they are feeling all these mixed emotions but they don't understand the deep psychological reasons why or dont have the self awareness to process these emotions due to the avoidance tendency modern society has created due to political, religious, and mental health issues as it makes them uncomfortable. On top of that the timing of this game is impeccable. Right during a pandemic where humanity and society is splitting itself apart.

This game is not positive vibes. This game is not the same type of fun like Naughty Dogs other franchise Uncharted. There is no winning in this game. One could argue it is not a game because of these traits. I'd agree. It's an experience. This game made me have a panic attack. It caused me extreme anxiety. Great, both me and the character have PTSD. This game was visually the most beautiful game I've ever played but also the most horrifc game I've ever seen. No it's not fun to have to shove a knife through a dogs throat because its about to tear your throat open and hear it whimper as it bleeds out. How the hell did I kill 10 people with 2 bullets and a empty beer bottle? Ah **** that guys name was Jimmy? Sorry I guess. I cant hear a clicking sound or a whistle right now without having my heart skip a beat. I am numb. I am hurt.
Traveling through Wyoming, Seattle, Santa Barbra, and more is breathtaking. What would I sacrifice for love? What would you sacrifice to survive? God I love dinosaurs. Can I play Hotel California on the guitar? Holy **** I can.

Right and wrong is all about perspective. Think for yourself. There is no such thing as good and evil. Humanity is horrible. This game may not be a 10/10 like the original. But I'd still give it an 9/10. Sometimes there is no meaning in death, sometimes it is unavoidable. Yes this game is painful.

Yes this game can be traumatizing but it's also beautiful. The longer time goes on I think the more people will appreciate this game. It is unforgettable. Things don't always go the way you want. Sometimes being a better person is not in your own self interest. At some point enough pain will break you. Sometimes the person you love is in the wrong and the person you hate is just reminding you of the person in the mirror.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is next level. You really need to sit and play this game. I have never been so immersed in a game or with a set of characters before. Obviously the graphics and game play are unmatched, that should go without saying. The acting in this game sets such high standards for future gaming (something we already knew with Naughty Dog games). The story is very dark, very draining and asks a lot of the player. It asks the player to trust the game and believe me it was hard. While playing the the second half, I too wanted to put my remote down and turn it off but I didn't. I wanted to get back to Ellie so badly I kept playing and playing, recklessly and rushing through some scenes. All of a sudden I started to realise that I cared about Abby. I didn't like her (the game never asks you to), but I understand her. The new characters are mostly great additions and really fleshed out. Definitely read the journals while you play. Once I had finished, man I was wrecked. Emotionally and mentally I needed to step away from the game and think about everything that had happened and everything I had done. It was there that I realized that this was an incredible game. I applaud Naughty Dog for the direction they took. I was a huge risk but for me it really paid off. It sucks if people genuinely didn't enjoy the game. Perhaps at a different stage in their life they might, i don't know. Either way, for me, this is the best game I have ever played. No medium has ever stuck in my head for so long. I am still thinking about the story and my interpretations. Uncharted was my favourite game series but TLOU has officially taken it's place. Expand

Yet, watching it unfold on the hardest difficulty once more. I now have the knowledge that I get to experience one of the greatest games in my 18 years of gaming. For another go-round! As it goes, for me The Last Of Us 2 is trilling and fascinating.
There where moments where I wanted to put the controller down because of the things the characters had to do. For the most the game is relentless and perhaps to it's detriment, at a point in time when we switch gears in the second half. Graphics and animations are like looking into a cinematic art gallery. It's also just amplified by great performance from the cast that I eventually grew fond of.

Combat always pushed the pace for me and I love playing with the battle encounters and set pieces that had me putting my hands over my head several times. There were points, where I had grown vicious towards the inhabitants of the game. But then started to question "Was there another way to deal with the situation?".

Also, we get great sounds effects from the explosions, to well produce sounds of Clickers and bad guys yearning in pain.

I have must point out a musical instrument that plays in later intense encounters. Felt like it was a mix of Hunter being Hunted, or like"Jaws" but I'm the shark moving in for the kill. The score in the game is fantastic. However I did see some glitches here and there, but that was into my second playthrough. Side note there is a moment in the game that I tulry wish I had when I was a kid. You will know when you get there. Is the game perfect? no game is None the less, the game is a bash. The Last Of Us 2 is gaming royalty. I did not expect much from the game. Yet, it gave me a perspective I did not ask for, but needed. It made me understand some meanings of obsession, forgiveness, war, love, and the cycle of pain and loss.

What's more it's a tale that you truly need to see through, like the two sides of a coin, to appreciate.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A game that isn't worth the hate.

The story seems to get flamed so I'm starting with that and why its 3/4 of my review. So lets go.

For about 10-13 hours you play as Ellie (depends on how long you loot and explore the city). As you play as Ellie you see how she is consumed with getting revenge on Abby for killing Joel. However, the more you play you see how consumed she really is, and how far she takes it to kill Abby. During the story she loses friends, family, and fingers to get her. The more you play, it gets you thinking, is the revenge for Joel worth it? Many fans would say yes. However, I took a step back to see if it is actually worth doing so. As Ellie, you kill many people as revenge for Joel. However, there're times when you question it, such as she kills a pregnant women (though she didn't know she was) and when she threatens to kill a child (Lev). The longer you play, the more you question if Ellie's actions are Justified. If you believe so then wouldn't by the same logic Abby's actions are Justified for killing Joel??? I mean Abby isn't really the evil one in this story, Ellie is. Before you hate me for saying so, Abby doesn't kill anyone besides Joel. She only wanted Joel no one else, that is why she sparred Ellie and Tommy. However, Ellie kills almost everyone that is friends with Abby. She kills her ex, hers ex's pregnant gf, and more that took part at Joel's death but didn't kill him. They also wanted Justice for Joel killing their friends, but did they deserve to die? That's for you to decide. But what helps your decision is that you play as the "bad guys".

After playing as Ellie, you reset the clock and play as Abby for about 10 hours. You see her complicated story, the friends that took place at Joel's death and gives them the reason they where there. The women that was pregnant? She didn't want to part take, but only went for the safety of the people (she is the medic). As Abby, if you allow yourself to open up to her character and gave her a chance, you'll most likely ending up caring for her. Once you begun playing as a character for about 10 hours, you begun to understand her, her motives, her thought process of the world. You start to care for her and her complicated story. You see as she changes through out the story, and at the end of the game, I actually didn't want to kill her, she was basically Joel at that point because of how much you played as her. At the end of Abby's story, Abby kills Ellie's friend Jesse and beats up Ellie and her GF Dina. She was going to kill Dina until Lev says her name, where Abby then AGAIN spares Ellie and Dina.

After playing as Abby their is a time jump of a year or so. Ellie seems to have given up on Abby and his living happily with her GF Dina and her child JJ. However, she begins to have PTSD of Joel's death. Including that Tommy comes back and tells Ellie where Abby might be somewhere is California. At first Ellie decides no, but then at night she decides to leave her family and goes on the search for Abby. Her consume for revenge makes her lose her family. She then fights another gang of people and at the end fights Abby. She forces Abby to fight (which Abby is a shell of her former self because of the people in the gang). She forced Abby to fight by threatening Lev, a child. Again, her revenge threatens a child's life. A fight starts with Ellie winning, however later in the fight, as Ellie starts to drown Abby, Abby bites two of her fingers off. However, Ellie gets back on top of her and continues to try and drown her. She is only stopped by having a brief memory of Joel. Where she realizes that killing Abby wont bring Joel back, and that if she kills Abby, she will be Abby. She realizes it isn't worth anymore, and lets Abby and Lev go.

At the end she loses friends, her only family she had, and her fingers. Her fingers are important, because through the story she plays the guitar. The guitar symbolizes Ellie's memory of Joel, throughout the story she is constantly remembers him, however at the end, she cant play the guitar due to the loss of her fingers and she stops playing it. She then sets it down, has a small last hopeful memory of Joel, of her telling him she will try and forgive him for saving her in the first game. Then she leaves her empty home, and the memory of Joel, and moves on.

The story is all about revenge, but not the way you would think of it. You question Ellie's actions and choices. You start to see how hate and revenge consumes her. It is a story that is complicated, but it inst bad. It takes an open mind to understand it all. And once you start to understand it all, you'll enjoy the game so much more.

Gameplay is the probably the best part. It's fun to loot, discover the secretes of City of Seattle, and combat is smooth. More guns to unlock and upgrade. The Game also looks absolutely beautiful. The world looks polished and realistic, with so much depth to it.

All in all, it's worth it.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
