This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The fact that people have been giving this game a zero is disrespectful. I understand that people are angry because of Joel's death. I get that, it's a very sad and dark moment for all fans, I was super pissed, and that fact that they had the guts to make us ,the players play, as Abby for the whole second half the game was disgusting. However, i soon realized that this was a vital move for the theme of this story. Even though playing as Abby is my least favorite part of the game that section brought to the table what the first game brought. Two people randomly meeting each other developing a special bond creating some of the best story moments in the game. Abby meets and interacts with some of the best characters I have seen in video games this past generation. This also allows the player to see both sides of the spectrum showing why Abby does what she does. Even though this game tried its hardest to make me sympathize for Abby, I just never could. Instead I always saw myself caring for the characters around her like Lev, Yara, and Owen but never her. So this makes it tens times harder for the player whenever it comes down to the moment when "crap hits the fan" and certain character suffer from terrible fates. However in some cases this games story does feel all over the place because of the random flashbacks in key moments that draw you away from the main story. Also the looting after killing dozens of men and the characters just super cheery and talking to each other like nothing happened bothers me. But these moments do not justify the right to give the game a zero. You can tell just by the loading screen this game has some much hardwork and dedication poured into it and over thousands of hours of work put into it. It really is a beautiful game and the gameplay is phenomenal. This game really shows the full potential games can reach in the next generation. Lets get back to the discussion of the story. Even though it may seem like just a classic revenge story with the whole story showing why revenge is "bad" it is way deeper. Naughty Dog whole point of this game is to go beyond and do something no one has ever done. Each characters decisions feel like they have impact and weight to the world, and it gives you this feeling that you will not know what happens next. This game made me UNCOMFORTABLE, I felt like any second a character I loved would soon have their life drained from their bodies leaving me with a feeling of dread constantly. Showing how truly evil human beings are. The story is not supposed to make people happy. *THIS IS NOT A HAPPY GAME* it is eery dark and scary. Every choice Ellie and Abby make are not good and alot of the times questionable. Because of this I was left speechless and sad over the things I had done to these people even though it seems like they deserved it. Even though playing the game through Abby ultimately hurt the game and killed the story for alot of people, and me to a certain extent, I believe that is the whole purpose. The point of this game is not to be happy with the outcomes but to be mad and frustrated with what happens because life is not always a happy story. That's why TLOU Part II is simply one of the best games I have ever played. Because it shows us what the dark side of humanity is. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is my first review ever on this site. I refer to metacritic very often to determine whether or not a game is worth my hard earned money. I just finished the game and I can say its worth every penny. People are complaining about “hidden agendas” and “poor story telling” when a majority just get pissed off about the leaks they saw without context or within Playing the first 2 hours of the game. Everyone had their dream setting and outcome for this game and for most people this game is different. It personifies the villains. It demonizes heroes. But it does it logically and it is genuinely a great story. Combat is improved. Soundtrack is amazing. Graphics are excellent. My advice is to to buy this game but take time to read the notes in the streets. Look at characters expressions throughout the story. Think about yourself in each characters shoes and it really is a realistic adaptation of this apocalyptic world. I loved every minute of it and I’m happy for it to be a part of my collection. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I personally really enjoyed this game, the animation, voice acting etc.. . I’m going to start with my negative of the game, this being the amount of time you play as Abby, I love what they did and thought this was a great concept but I felt it dragged on for a bit to long, the flashbacks were great revealing why she killed Joel, her battle against the terrifying Rat king was one if not the best boss fights across the two games, the decent down the skyscraper was sick and the fight vs Ellie was really cool as it allowed us to see our own tactics used against us, everything else I felt could have been shortened or scrapped if that meant the loss of the decent down the skyscraper part I would be perfectly happy to see that go if it meant I finished playing as Abby sooner. But other then that I really enjoyed the game and would highly recommend it to someone who enjoys a good story game. I think my favorite parts of the game were 1. Ellie and Joel flashback scenes I don’t even need to explain why i loved these scenes 2. Ellie and Joel’s final conversation the day before Joel’s death, this was beautiful as it shows Ellie’s strength as she begins to learn how to forgive Joel, this I think was one of my favorite scenes as it brought up all my emotions from playing the game. 3. The uniqueness of the entire game, I have Played the first game which was unreal although both are similar in play styles this story is very unique and something I am willing to get behind. Great job Neil and team Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The death of Joel is a very good motivation to Ellie, but i think that it was not performed as well, a good ideia with a bad perfomed. I like the final, i think is a good final, ellie was cracked with revenge she lost people she loved like the jj and dina just for revenge and when she managed to execute her revenge she saw that it wasn’t all that, that revenge wasn’t going to take her problems away just caused more problems, so she let abby go
I found Ellie's relationship with Dina good was not forced it flows well.
The graphics are beautiful, for me the best graphics of the generation, very big scenarios and very good gameplay. The facial expressions are excellent, but I thought they had many similar faces in the game, little diversity. The enemies in the game are balanced between infected and humans. I loved seeing both sides of the coin, playing with ellie and abby, I thought it was great at first we hate abby for killing joel, but when we play with her we see that she is not bad joel took her father’s life, she took revenge for a reason a great reason. I think this game is not a sealer at any point, it is a game that shows ellie’s sexuality, nothing much and abby is just strong no more. this game is not a sealer.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was incredibly disheartened when the leaks came out. I thought there was no possible way for the game to have all of those things happen and for me to enjoy it or feel anything besides pure anger. I was SO SO SO wrong.
The heart of the original was what made it special. While this does have fewer moments that show that off, the moments that do REALLY do. I can safely say most of my favorite scenes from either game happened in the sequel.
The game overall feels like the original; it is dark and violent but not any more than the first. While the first was mostly about doing what it takes to protect the ones you love, this one is about what it does to a person when they can’t.
    SPOILERS BELOW:
The part that I was least looking forward to was playing as Abby. The game definitely surprised me by making her story one that eventually made me grow to tolerate her and even had me invested in the game. I think a big part of that was Lev. Love that little guy.
However, I did not feel much for Abby even after playing as her for (far too many) hours. I think the creators made a mistake with how they decided to have her kill Joel. The whole game tries to parallel Abby and Ellie, but there are a few fundamental differences that make it impossible for me to like or side with Abby. The first and most important being the way she relishes in killing an torturing Joel. We see Ellie kill and torture Nora, but we see the impact it has on her after. The creators dug themselves into a hole that is impossible to come out of by showing Abby killing Joel in such a cruel way with absolutely no remorse. I also really struggled with the game trying to compare Joel killing Abby’s dad (to protect Ellie) to what Abby did to Joel. I’m sure that it felt no different to Abby but they are ABSOLUTELY not the same.
I also have a hard time deciding how I feel about the final part of the game. I’m very conflicted. At first I absolutely wanted to see Ellie kill Abby and get revenge. The whole game, even as Abby, I just kept thinking “I cant wait for her to die!!!” Once Ellie decided to go find Abby, I felt angry about the decision. She had a family that she was giving up. It did not feel worth it to me. I did think that having her go due to her PTSD was a much more interesting choice than “SHE NEEDS VENGEANCE”. It almost made it seem like the right decision. To be totally honest I could have done without that final part completely. But, that final part was the first time I actually felt for Abby. During the final fight I just kept thinking “you’ve both been through so much, just stop” and I think that’s what the creators wanted of me.

Overall, I really enjoyed the game. If they had made Abby kill Joel off screen (or in a way where she didn’t immediately get branded as an irredeemable person in every player’s mind) I think I would have been able to empathize with her more (and maybe even like her). Then the battle in the theater could have been the final and we could have gotten rid of the last part. It wouldn’t need to exist or feel as rushed and unnecessary as it did.

I can safely say this is one of the most amazing peices of story telling this generation of games. I need to emphasize, if you've played any naughtydog games, they are experiental. What this means is you gain most of the context through the conversations between characters, through facial expressions, music and emotion portraid by the voice actors.

There is a complex narrative that interweaves journeys from both sides, having you question who was right and who was wrong.

Yes Joels death was heartbreaking, but the game spends 20 hours + fleshing out the why. By the end of the game i was torn between who i was vouching for.

I urge you to bypass all the negative reaction you've seen, there has been a hate campaign against this campaign that started over 2 years ago when they talked about exploring Ellie's sexuality.

Any reviews you read on here that score the game under 5 there's a high chance they haven't even played the game, even if you do not like the story and direction it's taken, there's an incredible game, technical masterpeice to experience.

If you look at the majority of low reviews , they are from the day the game was released. Most people have opinions formed before the game even released.

It's ridiculous to think you can form an opinion on the narrative without experiencing how it's delivered.

    cheers

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Despite what many “fans” of The Last of Us have been posting. It is plainly obvious that the majority of the negative reviews from gamers have been due to either, 1.) Homophobic ideals or 2.) They haven’t played the full game yet or just decided to hop on the band wagon for negativity. The story is amazing, yea it has a few minor flaws in it, but the response to it has been pointless and illogical. The graphics are absolutely stunning and the gameplay is nearly perfect. I have finished the game in its entirety 2 times as of writing this. No, I am not lying about that. I can just say that it is a very well crafted game that is deserving of the title and is a perfect follow up to the first game. Joel may have been killed very early on in the game, but, he also was well aware that after killing all of those Fireflies, people would try and kill him. He was clearly calm in his last few moments of life because he knew it was going to happen sooner or later. People are whining about how Ellie had no problem with killing all of the other people who were in Abby’s group but not Abby. She never intended to kill them, they attempted to fight back while being interrogated and Ellie defended herself. When Ellie finally confronted Abby in the end of the game, she came to the realization that Abby was in many ways just like her. I get that Joel died and I was pissed off about it, but as the game progressed I began to realize that Abby didn’t deserve to die and neither did any of her friends. So before anyone tries to write a negative review for this game, I highly reccomend you read this post in its entirety and for many people, I reccomend you actually play the game or at least finish playing it before you decide to trash talk it. I am glad I was smart enough that I didn’t get anything spoiled for me because unlike many people I chose to steer clear of any third-party info on The Last of Us Part II because I wanted to experience everything myself for the first time. So either, play this game or don’t buy it and stop posting unknowledgable reviews on a game that you have never even played. These developers worked hard to make this game and their work shows. The game is worth every penny in my opinion and I felt like it was nessicarry to post this review because I at least know what is going on and I have also played the game twice and have a better understanding of the story. I hate seeing the negativity towards great games like this because it is unwarranted and honestly it damages people’s reputation. So if you have been wanting to play this game and/or you aren’t sure if you should buy it or not, I can say that from my experience, it is worth the money. I can’t force anyone into buying it but I can let people know that I have enough time played on this game to make a fair review for this fantastic game. *Again* don’t look at every negative review and believe it, because, more often than not, the person reviewing the game has either not finished it or doesn’t even own the game to begin with. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Less of a review and more of an explanation of the story from my perspective. I don’t understand people’s hate for this game, I finally finished the story yesterday, it is truly a story that needs to be played out to its end. The Last of us Part II plays out the repercussions of the first game in a telling and challenging way through the unveiling of people connected to those affected by the choices of our characters in the first game, leaving us with a moral dilemma that examines what it truly means to seek revenge over forgiveness.

This is most prevelant between the characters of
Ellie and Abby as a parallel to the larger factions of the wolves and the Seraphites. In many ways Abby’s story mirrors Joel’s in the first game, where he was a cold, emotionally suppressed smuggler trying to hide away from his daughters death and finding redemption in Ellie. Abby is a cold, revenge fueled girl who has channeled her rage into hunting down Joel, physically and emotionally preparing herself for years on and to face Joel for murdering the fireflies including her own father. And she pursues this at the behest and sacrifice of her own friends. Joel’s redemption began not with saving Ellie from the fireflies but with finally telling Ellie the truth. His gruff, violent smuggler was no more, Ellie’s relationship broke down his walls on the first story arc and he is no longer as suspicious, as quick to act violently or as trusting of his own instincts because his actions against the fireflies have left him seeking moral redemption. This allows him to fall right into Abbys trap, because in saving her from the infected he is playing out this emotional redemption. The last of us part 2 challenges us by showing the repurcussions of a tribalistic society, brilliantly executing a parallel between the Seraphites, the Wolves, the Jackonson-ites and the Fireflies. Particularly the conflict between the Seraphites and the Wolves. Throughout the game as Ellie pursues Abby and Abby seeks redemption for what she has done to Joel we see a stark parallel between the warring tribes that have a stake in the fallen city of Seattle. Each faction believes they are doing something righteous for their cause, and each faction is sacrificing something immeasurable to achieve it. This rings true with Ellie as she is willingly blinded by her pursuit of revenge, whilst suppressing what is revealed to be her intimate knowledge of the gravity of what Joel did to deserve his death. It is not until she loses everyone entirely and faces Joel for what he was, the closest thing she had to a father, doing what he did best, that she realises the gravity of her actions and let’s Abby go. Abby grapples with the guilt of killing Joel throughout the story, justifying her actions through letting Ellie and Tommy survive. It is not until she realise they have gone onto seek revenge themselves that she again pursues revenge. Having saved Lev and lost all allegences to her tribal societies Abbys morality has finally adjusted, she believes in the light once again and when finally faced with Ellie in the theatre she again spares her life. Knowing that her redemption is worthless if she chooses to kill Ellie. The penultimate struggle of the story is in the burning down of the island with the war raging between the wolves and the Seraphites, destruction begets destruction, revenge breeds revenge. Ellie lets go of her promise at a future with Dina for one last pursuit of revenge, leaving Jackson and seeking out Abby one last time. It is in this final conflict, where Ellie cuts down Abby and realises that Abby is uninterested in this battle between, already broken by her capture by rattlers, that Ellie faces her true conflict. Her pursuit of Abby was not one of revenge of Joel’s death, but one of unresolved trauma and pain caused by Joel’s actions. She wasn’t ready to forgive Joel when he died, that was a process still unfolding, he took away her life having meaning in her eyes, he killed people to save her and never cared to think if that’s what she would want. what fuelled her anger was that Abby took away the opportunity to forgive him, to repair that damage, for her Abby represented the part of her that wished Joel had never done what he did. She can relate to her intimately, and ultimately lets her go, and in doing so let’s go of her hatred for Joel.

In the closing scene when Ellie plays the guitar with her two missing fingers, the song is broken and worn as her hands are incapable of playing as they once did. She sets aside the guitar and walks away. Her resentment for Joel is no more, she understands why he did what he did, she accepts it and she has let go the piece of herself that held hatred for him.

This ending leaves Abby to finally redeem herself in rejoining the fireflies and making peace with her choices and Ellie to make her life have the meaning she always wished it had since she was bitten.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TLOU 2 is one of the most complex games I've played. Something similar happened to me while playing it, similar to Red Dead Redemption 2, in a way that both games involve difficult themes and characters which make the game more grounded and evolved, in a way. Anyway, some parts of the plot, specially the ending, requires special level of comprehension to reach to the peak of the game and the objective of the developers.

ANYWAYS, I have a theory that may explain all the hate towards the game.
What if the game was intended to backfire itself from all the hate that it is receiving? Let me explain. Everyone hates Abby from that crucial moment in the first 2 hours of the game, provoquing the player to react angrily after such a loss. Then we all see different perspectives from people who lost someone, both characters with there respective father figures. The game takes us to do horrible things, even ones we don’t want to take part of, from both sides again. The game is based on hatred and grief for our loved ones, regarding both main playable characters in the game and the player! Because it feels like the game passes over to us that hate, the players, and it’s up to us if whether we decide or not to follow the line of hate the characters are carrying out. Ellie wants to take revenge from the murder of his Joel, and Abby wants to take revenge from the murder of Jerry by Joel. It’s like the cycle of violence passes by to us and makes us really hate the game for all the "bad" decisions the writer has carried out. I believe that this might not be just a coincidence but a side-intention in the plot. This is why TROY BAKER, actor of Joel, reminds us to keep an open mind while playing throughout the game, because of how we need to understand it and why players should not rush by raging about it. I know I don’t know much how to express complex ideas but this one kept going around inside my mind and I needed to write it down.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Naughty Dog does it once again. The Last of Us: Part II is an amazing video game that is just as good as the last one. Within the first hour of gameplay there is a big surprise death that is not really all that surprising yet at the same time gut wrenching. Because of this death you go on an Adventure with Ellie and her partner Dina. To search for Abby in Seattle and get revenge for the death! Along the way you see tons of highs and falls not just with Ellie and Dina, but with Joel and Ellie, Jessie and Tommy! And even the backstory of Abby herself! These new characters are beautifully written and feel very natural and realistic. Every moment with them I felt like I believed in every relationship. What makes this game different than the last is you also play as Abby. This you learn why Abby did what she did. And why she has her quest for vengeance as well. This leads to you feeling confused on whether you support Abby or Ellie. In the end I felt both had respectable reasons as to there lust for revenge. Not only do you see Abby and why she wants revenge but you also get to play her in Seattle as well. And the two biggest character developments are from Ellie and Abby. Abby starts off a blind follower of the WLF’s who only wants revenge for her fathers death. However after being saved by a couple Scars she realizes this fight is not hers and decides something new is in place. So she decides to try finding the fireflies again. She goes from being a tough soldier seeking revenge. To a tough friend who no longer seeks violence. Ellie is on a complete opposite path in which she starts out sad and depressed about Joel lying to her about the fireflies. Then being mad and angry that she didn’t get the chance to give him a proper “I forgive you” and so she thinks getting revenge for his death will be a good forgiveness. However she realizes Joel wouldn’t want this a little to late because of the path she chose she lost everything she had, Love, Family, and a home.

The only downside I saw from my 25 hours of playtime. Towards the middle of the storyline it does get boring and feels repetitive of the first two days, however that boredom is quick because once again you are thrust into a new story line and crazy punches to the face! Overall I give this game a 9/10. The great graphics, along with the great Story, and the Character Development. One thing for sure this game is definitely one of the best story mode games by far!

(P.S. don’t listen to the reviews bashing the fact that Ellie is gay. This game does a great job of not forcing the fact that she is gay down your throat like some shows on TV do. Instead Naughty dog does a great job of making Ellie and her relationship feel like a real genuine relationship and person! Very natural and amazing!)

The last of us 2 is It is very practical with a very raw and functional story, the strengths of this game are the wonderful landscapes and the gameplay that makes you feel like you’re actually in the situation that the characters are involved, the bad things about this game is the way that the history is told because there are times when you feel confused and do not understand what is happening another bad point is the unnecessary role that plays Abby since the story is supposed to revolve around ellie and her thirst for revenge this causes the player to disconnect and lose the connection they have with the character but doesn’t matter because the story works well and does not end up disappointing you Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
