Now, a more detailed look. TLOU2 has the theme of revenge. It's an old theme, one that has been covered many times. I'm not adverse to stories exploring it, but it does seem a little... generic. I do like that it's used here as a jumping off point to explore larger themes like obsession.

Both Ellie & Abby are both obsessed with revenge & we see the impact it has on both of their lives. Initially, from Abby's perspective, she gets hers & all seems well. Then Ellie re-enters her life & we see the impact her revenge has on her life. She loses everything. Her friends, her place in the world; had she not gone hunting Joel, Owen would not have gotten worn out so soon, she'd have never met Lev, she'd have likely stayed with the WLF. Similarly Ellie loses everything; her father figure, her partner, their child. Both have a sliver of hope at the end - Abby sets off with Lev; Ellie still has Jackson, Tommy, Maria and Dina & JJ are out there.

So yeah, the main narrative - how revenge is destructive - is done well. It's a little standard, but it works. But there's more. PTSD. At first Ellie seems fueled by grief, but gradually we come to see that she is suffering from PTSD and, alone with Dina, she lacks the support to process it appropriately. This fuels her revenge, she becomes increasingly driven by both. That's an element a lot of revenge narratives don't look at, so that helps the story to stand out slightly.

Okay, now to all things queer. This game does representation pretty well overall. There are some issues, but overall it's good. First, sexuality. The game goes to great lengths not to sensationalise or sexualise Ellie's sexuality & in doing so sets a solid standard in representation of LGBTQ relationships, with just one issue I'll cover soon. They have ups & downs, Ellie puts her foot in her mouth at times, there are adorable moments in equal measure. And they avoid the dead lesbian trope. **** finally. I do find it unfortunate that at the end Dina has left.

The game's flaw is its obsession with negativity. I can't think of a single character aside from Eugene (who passed away peacefully before the game) who doesn't go through Some Horrific **** The game feels like misery porn at times & it's kind of overwhelming.

Lev. Where to start. Lev is a great character with a nice arc. I love that the protagonists just accept him. Abby hears his deadname & when he asks her if she's going to ask about it, she replies with "do you want me to?", he says "no" And She Doesn't Ask.

This is where we have an issue. Deadnaming. Story wise, I get why it's there. The cult doesn't accept trans people. But also, they don't want him back, they want to kill him. At times they refer to Lev & his sister as apostates & I don't see why they wouldn't just stick with that. They are no longer part of the family, they deserve death. Just leave it at apostate.

Lev is one of a handful of unambiguous trans characters in AAA games. When one of such few characters is involved with some of the most horrific misery porn made, including causing the death of his mother in self-defense, it has an impact. I get that TLOU is a truly horrific world, but this goes back to what I said about every single character experiencing Some Real Nasty **** It feels unnecessary, especially given the real world **** trans people have been going through for years.

That doesn't change the fact that Lev himself is a solid character & it'd be nice to see more of his story in his own words, not others talking about him, which is another issue, almost all of his trans narrative is presented though others. He's a fantastic character and I hope he returns in a potential TLOU3 in a much expanded role.

So, how is the queer representation in TLOU2? Overall, it's several steps forward. Neil Druckmann & team did a good job. I hope they take on board some of the criticism they've received. Again, going back to misery - I get that TLOU is not a happy world, but if you're going to include LGBTQ+ characters please remember that we go through A Lot Of **** in our current world. Seeing a game that, in some light, can be perceived as saying "see how worse it could be?" feels a little like offering a chocolate bar in one hand whilst holding a lead pipe in the other, ready to strike.

I'm not saying to put us on an untouchable pedastal or anything like that. Just please bear it in mind & try to offer more balance of light with the darkness. Consider the minorities you are representing. Bring us in. Have us help you on the path. Talk to young trans men. Talk to people who have escaped cults.

So, did I enjoy the game? Absolutely. It's fantastic, easily the best game of the year so far, indeed the best game in many years. It has issues but so does *all* art. Hopefully the team will learn the lessons of Disney and not have a knee jerk reaction to online negativity. Have confidence in the stories you tell & stand by your convictions.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It was the most anticipated game of 2020 ... and now what? The worst game of 2020! No one talks about graphics, controls, other details (that was quite good actually)..The main tragedy is the script. just for fun kill the main character Joel and when play as his killer, seriously ??? seriously??? No one cares about her s..t story, half of the the game playing by Abby's character, the feeling was like we were being raped. And as a result, Ellie's role ... teenager, who didn't care about Joel, she practically hates him and what kind of revenge was that??? I...cannot even finish this review...My money was thrown into the trash...A huge disappointment and hopefully they won’t make part 3 anymore, enough of this nonsense. Expand

I have read some poor comments about this game, all I have to say is...what an immature collection of people!
In this review I will not discuss the development of graphics or mechanics of this game, because they are just perfect, has is the sound, environment and voice acting!- Congratulations from a Software Engineer.
I will although defend the story of this amazing game, a story that everyone seems to miss the point. I am tired of classic stories where a character we love gets killed and we have to simply avenge him, this story is a lot of things, but simple is not one them!
I found myself not wanting to see what the game had to show me, not because of negative things, but because this game touched my feelings like no game has ever done before! This game doesn’t just tell the story of Joel and Ellie but puts the player in the mind of the people that are actually in an apocalypse! You start the game angry and wanting revenge for what happen to Joel, you follow Ellie’s point of view, where everything you are doing seems right! You think “These people deserve it”!
But then the game touches in your deep feelings and twists them by making you play with Abby...”what a low blow”... I first thought, but it was in fact genius! Abby is so much like Ellie, and more than that...she is so much like Joel! When you get to the end of Abby’s days in the beautiful city of Seattle, you end up with the fact that...”damn...she is actually a good person”...and so are the kids from the Scars and so is Ellie and Joel...and that’s where the simulation of the apocalypse comes in...the main characters of this story are not bad people at all...just people fighting for different things in a **** up world...
I ended this game having to admit to myself that if anyone acted badly...was my favorite character...Joel...love makes you choose in a selfish way...
The end of this game...is about grief...and both Ellie and Abby lost more then they gain with revenge...Abby lost her friends, Ellie lost the opportunity of a family and happiness...but in the end she managed to make piece and say goodbye to Joel in a last song...just...beautiful...
Such an original story...like I have never seen before, I could never predict anything on this game!
It’s time that games enter in a new era, with new stories and emotions! And it’s time that us, gamers, open our minds for what the game has to show us and not for what we wanted to see!
    Naughty Dog...thank you!

Also I didn't wanted to play when Abby almost killed Ellie in the theather. Joel's death affects me but it isn't a reason to hate the game. If I played more with Ellie and less with Abby I would love the game. Thats why I rate this game with an 8. I hope ND release a part 3! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think the game is amazing in many aspects. The gameplay is never boring while we are playing and the animations are on a whole new level with a massive variety of killing, dying, hitting, shooting, dodging animations. The prone factor is an awesome added feature that helps in many aspects. The sound of every single weapon, music, background sound, explosions, crafting, weapon upgrades, item pick up, infected, ellie's steps on the floor, everything that is related to sound is just flawless and are for the most part really pleasurous to hear giving that full immersion into the game giving us a sound orgasm like feeling. The wide variety of weapons is incredible and larger compared to the first game and we get to experience different weapons with ellie and abby wich is awesome since we get to see that both of them really aren't that much alike when it comes to fighting style and the way they choose to approach the enemy. while I played with ellie i liked to go for a more stealthy approach while with abby I most of the times was the first one shooting my shots and making noise. It's interesting to see that the two characters have different fighting styles according to theyr physical strength and battle experience. Graphics wise there is nothing to complain about it is by far the All PS4 can give and it is amazing to see how much attention to the details Naughty Dog payed because it is incredibly well done. When u shoot enemies or stab them, when you get close to a tree or a wall, the psysics of the ropes and eletric cables, the snow and the clothes. Now for the facial expressions, by far the best ones so far. When u look down with abby on a high place you can tell by her face that she is terrified of heights, the face ellie makes while stabing the enemy,or even when you get shot. It is just incredible what they managed to achieve with the face expressions. Now for the story. I wouldn't say it is bad. I actually think it is really good (this is my opinion, if you didn't like it just don't judge). I think the gore like death of Joel was a litle soon but we get those flashbacks that maded me cry A LOT. As for Ellie's part I have nothing bad to say. The way the story is told up to that part is amazing. Then comes abby. I'm like ok imma have to play as abby, whatever. I understand that with that Naughty Dog is trying to make us see the two sides of the coin and it really makes us think. I think that in terms of environments abby's part was actually much better than Ellie's beacuse while in ellie's part we see much green and plants, even though it is amzingly detailed, it is pretty much the same. But in Abby's part we even get to go to the top of those super tall buildings and go through those amazing bridges. Now my issue with abby isn't the character itself because she did what she did and she had her reasons...That is understandable she did the same ellie did, to seek revenge. But I just think that Naughty Dog made us play TOO MUCH with abby, there were parts that could have not been shown like abby and owen's sex scene and when abby comes back after that night when u go back to yara and lev you could have just taken us to them but ok. According to the end of the game, I think it is very well done. She doesn't get her revenge BUT like, look at what they did to each other, both ellie and abby have lost so many things because of each other. I loved and that last flashback between ellie and joel just killed me. i loved it. So all in all, I think it is a spectacular game, animation and graphics wise it is amazing. The sounds are the best and the story in my opinion wasnt as bad as people say it was. I wouldn't say I liked TLOU PART II better than TLOU 1 but TLOU PART 2 sure was an incredible game with massive achievements. I give it a solid 9/10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's very easy to get on your high horse and believe that your creation is too sophisticated for "people to get". That will make some people compelled to "get it", so they can feel brighter, or more open-minded than others. But there's nothing to "get". This game overstays its welcome by 15-20 hours. It's repetitive and extremely boring, trying so hard to shock you with one of the worst excuses for a story I have ever experienced in gaming. The sudden flashes of storytelling brilliance (the astronaut scene) only hold contrast to the bleak everything else. The devs have completely abandoned everything that made the first game the masterpiece that it was and filled this game with a lot of SJW stuff, for the sake of being edgy. Unmemorable, and even completely insufferable characters that you are forced to spend time with, and Ellie can easily make this list, too (I disliked her character arc just as much as I disliked Abby). By the end of this unfortunate 30 hours experience, I couldn't care less who dies and in which order. It is hard to believe that such a flop could possibly exist when you have unlimited resources, and top-notch talent on all frontlines of visuals, music, level design, and voice actors. But those things are never enough if there's no compelling story to tell, and I feel extremely sorry for the people that were overworked to create this game. You can put 10.000 plants and detail every piece of grime on a wall by hand, but that's not why we play games. And elementary school philosophy doesn't count as a compelling story. I regret every second I have spent in the second part of this game. I am extremely disappointed to say that. I will never buy another Naughty Dog title, as long as the current leaders stay in their place. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Despite the leaks, I went into this game with an open mind. What I found is that The Last of Us Part 2 will be a game that I will remember because of its impact on me. I think about it all the time, I can't stop! Very few games stick with me after getting through the credits but this game has rewritten what a videogame and a story can be. Playing through this there were moments like Ellie's cover of 'Take on me' and the ending fight between Abby and Ellie that were some of the greatest moments I have ever experienced in a videogame. This game tells a story of revenge, Abby's revenge story shows the effects as she loses everyone close to her while you see Ellie directly go through it during the game. The game to me is about breaking this cycle and truly finding a purpose, that was the true goal that was achieved in the end. While I can't directly express my thoughts into words I just want to share my experience and while it wasn't perfect I can happily say it was a game I won't forget but rather a memory I hope will never fade.
