Technically, the game is made at the highest level, a nice picture, a great soundtrack and atmosphere.BUT!The narrative and the main event at the beginning, from which the plot is tied - this is not the continuation I have been waiting for all these years. In the second half of the game, I wanted to run faster to the end, since Abby is a new character and did not feel any empathy for her.And why does the player not have the right to choose the ending? This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Coming to terms with Joel's death, understating how truthful this universe is, I can't let my feelings for him blind me like Ellie did.

This is a story about people, actions and consequences.
Revenge and forgiveness are the cores of this game, and it delivers a strong message of how expensive the cost for vengeance is.
Not only this, but also the fact that in the end nothing will change what happened in the past.

So yes, with the proper distancing, I learned to admire this masterpiece.

Sure, it would've been nice to see Joel dying later in the game? Yes

It would've been nice to have Joel alive with Ellie? Yes

But this game is a accurate view of how complex life is, and how hurtful, cruel, and savage humanity could get in extreme situations.

No plot shield for protagonists, because this is not a game about a main character. It's about perspectives and the two sides of a conflict.

Obs: they made the game too long, but that doesn't kill the experience.

A revenge tragedy is all very well, but this is over-long by a factor of two and somehow manages simultaneously to be both clumsy and pompous in its moral argument (which is a lot less sophisticated and insightful than its writers seem to imagine). It also fails on its own terms as a feat of storytelling: I was left wholly indifferent to the fate of both protagonists -- in large part because they repeatedly made such improbably wrongheaded decisions -- and actively resentful for the length of time and attendent tedium that I had been forced to suffer cycle upon cycle of hackneyed narrative tropes: cartoon physics, zombie grotesquery, leaden verisimilitude. What a waste. Expand

I waited 7 years for this, but the story was so agly. wanted to quit so many times though out the Abby line.
I felt nauseous playing as Abby. The moment when I had to beat Ellie I wanted to delete the game. I regretted not doing it. Because at the end Abby bites off Ally's fingers. This is terrible and disgusting. Do not spend your money on this garbage.

If someone plays it without experiencing the first one then they could be a lot more forgiving about its story and plot , and a lot more impressed about its graphics and gameplay. However, if someone has played through the experience of the original Last of Us , taking part in the journey of the amazing characters of Joel and Ellie and witnessing the bond they develop , then they cannot be as enthusiastic about this game.
The reason this game SEEMS so divisive is because is is unbelievably good in some aspects and incredible bad in some others. This is obvious considering that EVERYBODY admires and respects the former and EVERYBODY either greatly dislikes or tries to defemd to some degree the latter.
What everybody loves : It is undeniable that this game looks amazing. The graphics, the sounds, the environment and the interaction with it is astonishing and really sets the golden standard from now on. The gameplay is enhanced without diverting a lot from the original which is at the very least interesting and entertaining.
What nobody loves : There is a reason why players have strong negative opinions about the story , the plot , the characters, the character development and the theme/politics that are presentd. And it is not because they are all bigots all of a sudden and cant handle the diversity, it is because of the way they are introduced to the the themes of the game and the course of action their characters follow. The reason why people loved the first game was because they were exposed to the immersive realistic and believable connection between Ellie and Joel that slowly formulated in this post apocalyptic world. The distand , cold and heart broken man eventually becoming the father figure to the young but cheerful, witty and strong girl that reminded him of the joys of life and gave it meaning once again. That strong bond that built up throughout the game was in the end the reason why players could justify his choice to spare her life, being inable to lose his daughter again , and possibly denying the creation of a vaccine by her sacrifice.
In the sequel however, the bond between the charactes seems unrealistic and forced simply for driving the story. Players dont get to witness any strong characters developing over time and strengthening their affiliation with one another. As a result the fail to sympathize with the and care about their progression.
Apart from that the characters themselves are flat, uninteresting and unlikable for the most part. Ellie is grown but that doesnt mean she has to be cold , emotionless, ungrateful and self concerned as she appears to be during most of the game and especially when she confronts Joel about saving her life. Any other character seems equally uninteresting and unimportant with very little impact .
The choices f the characters are usully puzzling , idiotic , dangerous , dangerous and lead to way too many near death situations where plot armour instead of characters skills prevent their demise.
Special mention , Abby who is the new addition and besides her near monstrous look is utterly unlikable despite the many attempts of the game to present her as though she is , and in the end does not find redemption in the hearts and minds of the players . The infamous initial encounter of her and Joel simply cannot be justified even when considering the death of her father. Such violence and hatred is just unacceptable and would make one believe that Joel enjoys killing his victims slowly while cutting them to pieces and making their relatives watch. It is just such a disproportionate response , it is unthinkable.
The plot is confusing , mishandled , lacks a clear noble goal besides vengeance and doesnt deliver in the end. It lacks passion , enthusiasm , meaning and has just a chep provocation that if one has not played the first game really doesnt even care for as much. Overall it is abysmal and the main reason why the game doesnt have good lasting impressions and motivation for completion.
And FINALLY the undeniable, the indisputable , the unquestionable and crystal clear message of the game, DIVERSITY. The reason why so many people are annoyed by the theme of the game is not because they are bigots , homophobes, sexists , misogynistes and cis gender white males. These accusations are used daily more and more in order to shelf someone or something from criticism since they are extremely vague to the point that they can be addressed to anyone. It is extremely easy to make these accusations and therefore divert the attention from the main subject.
This game is filled with politics and progressive messages that are as irrelevant for a post apocalyptic world as they are forced into the story. The strong, homosexual female protagonist , the giant monstrous looking female antagonist.

The mechanics, graphics and gameplay are freaking awesome. I give a 9 just because I would've loved to play more as Ellie and maybe some with Joel. I liked playing as Abby (eventhough I didn't feel any sympathy for her and wanted her dead), but I think that story was more suitable for a DLC. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is undoubtedly one of the most polarizing games ever. It also happens to be one the best games I have ever played.

Why there's such a huge disparity between the user and critic reviews doesn't surprise me at all -- people are reactionary. Once word got out that one of the most celebrated video game protagonists of all time was killed in such brutal fashion AND players were expected play as his killer, the game was irredeemable. Ellie's sexuality and Abby's masculine figure were just the cherry on top of a clear dumpster fire.

It just so happens that all of those disjointed elements came together to form a masterpiece.

Naughty Dog decided that a cliched storyline would be too simple -- so they decided to go against the grain and create one of the most f*cked up video game stories I've ever experienced.. and I'm glad they did. I remember watching Abby impale Joel's skull numerous times before finally putting him out of his misery right in front of Ellie. In that moment, I hated Abby just as much as you could anyone. She definitely felt "irredeemable" at that moment in time.

Through phenomenal character development and plot direction, we somehow eventually come to empathize with Abby. We don't necessarily forgive her for murdering Joel, but we do understand why she did it and at least try to work past it. It takes Ellie murdering all of Abby's close friends and acquaintances to arrive to a similar judgement. Near the end, in Ellie's gritty encounter with Abby at the beach, we don't want either character to die. By that point, they've both been robbed of (almost) everything they had, and revenge was nothing more than a moot point.

I quite enjoyed the ending as well. It isn't a happy ending, but it's one that gives gravity to all of the choices made throughout the game. The overwhelming feeling is "emptiness", but Naughty Dog has left a lot to our own imagination, along with a strong possibility for a third game.

In the end, the parts of the game that linger with me are:

Outstanding graphics - beautiful scenery, stellar facial animations
Top-notch voice acting - as expected with Naughty Dog
Amazing score - especially in regards to the acoustics
Impactful story - it's emotional, brutal, and raw, blurs the line between gaming and movies
Gameplay - major improvement from the first, really intelligent enemy AI and fun stealth/gunplay

At the end of the day, The Last of Us 2 has a leg up on its predecessor and is in my Top 10 of this generation's games. It's one of my favorite cinematic games, up there with Uncharted 4, but factoring in the graphics, story, and gameplay, it's absolutely a must-play for anyone. 10/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II. Spoiler Alert !

    Spoiler Alert !!

    Spoiler Alert !!!

Joel f**ked the whole world to save Ellie. Almost everyone, if not all, projected the dead daughter’s image on Ellie when Joel was stepping out of the hospital. It was not justified yet reasonable for Joel to kill the last person of Fireflies. While controlling Joel walked through the game, all I thought was to save the little girl, she was just like my daughter, and I could not bear to lose a daughter again.

All the characters that I had built with strong bonds in the Episode one were so broken in this Part II. I really wish the time could be stoped when Joel and Ellie were visiting the museum, when she putted up the astronaut helmet, when the rocket launched. Yet I had to push forward the story. If it was inevitable, then Joel deserved a better death. He could die a hero, instead of being tortured and butchered as an animal by Abby who was nearly survived from the Infectors and was save by Joel. How could a player invest empathy to Abby in the second part of the game when the first part the game was deliberately designed to kill her, especially after she killed Joel in such a brutal way. Yet you have to play Abby as the main character of the game for about 10 hours. NaughtyDogs demonstrated Abby’s misery and tried to provoke players’ sympathy towards her. That might be working when judged from players’ god viewpoint. However, Ellie did not know that part. Ellie did not know Abby’s reasons for killing, which made the final scene extremely uncomfortable in which Ellie let Abby go by the moment the later was almost drown, by the moment which costed Ellie’ peaceful life with Dina and JJ, by the moment Ellie started a new revenge while players had have somewhat accepted the fact that the two girls all had miserable lives and both deserve to live. When I thought the game would be fine if it ended that way. The writer of the game sent Ellie out for another chasing for Abby. A chasing that actually saved Abby from local bandits and freed her from a death penalty. When I thought the two would help each other get out of the war zone, they fought against each other again. Ellie started the fight, Ellie was winning, and Ellie let her go again. WTF. What was the purpose of this piece of story? I killed thousands of people, including innocents, to find my enemy for a revenge, and when I have finally found the enemy and have the chance to avenge Joel’s death, I choose to let you go simply because the game said so, because the writer thought killing is not good. Then how about the lives I took on my way? The game did not provide any non-killing options for players to walk through the game peacefully. It actually explicitly exhibited the brutal scenario of killing, including bloody executions. That is absolutely a bullsh*t. In sum, the Part one led players to slaughter the world to save my little girl, and the Part two simply told you that you should not have saved the girl because you killed people. And killing is very very bad. The Last of Us Part II is the last of NaughtyDogs for me. I swear.

My main issue is with how bad the story telling is, for a AAA company like Naughty Dog, who specializes in story based games, this game is a total train-wreck in terms of storytelling. The actual story itself isn't super new or unique, but that doesn't mean it's devastatingly bad either.

I won't go in dept as i have better things to do, but a summarized version of what would've been better: storytelling that doesn't feel all over the place and random, instead a rather linear but conflicting story-line between the two protagonists (which honestly felt like what the game was trying to do but failed miserably), not killing off main and side characters just for that 'wow' effect (some scenes felt like they were being violent for the sake of being violent, and don't actually contribute to the plot or anything), not killing off main characters super early and then forcing them back in through flashbacks (this allows for proper pacing to develop your character and make their death have a larger impact, writing 101 i guess), reworking that ending entirely as it is not thoroughly justified at all, properly try to develop characters and not force players to empathize with some of them. There are more things i could nitpick, but like i said my main issue was the junior level storytelling.
Overall i rate this game a 'meh' out of 10.
Also, have to get in my obligatory "Joel-in-One, Bigot Sandwiches".

The story. The first half of the game is great. You have your mission as Ellie and you really feel what she feels. Then you get to the second part and if you are like me, you want to just throw the game out. But it was during that second half when I started to question myself, whether it is even worth to get our revenge with Ellie. And you realize, that this is what they were going for. To make you ask yourself, whether it is worth. The last mission was perfect for this. You really are in the position, where you are not sure, whether you are doing the right thing. The ending perfectly summarize all of yours and Ellie's feelings. It is not what we hoped for, but I think it is so much more. Every fan of the 1st game should give this a chance and to sit through it till the end. No matter the leaks, the flaws, or that you are not satisfied that Ellie did what she did in the end. I think it delivered bigger story than this generation of gamers can really appreciate by looking at the reviews. I know people have different opinions and that's fine. But we should try to look for the deeper meaning in the story, than just a dull revenge. We've seen this kind of story so many times. Naughty Dogs made something, that we were just not ready for and I love it. I don't regret a single minute spent with this game and I can't wait to play it again.

For those of you who saw the leaks or stopped playing the game after the golf scene and think this game is **** Everyone loved Joel from the 1st game. Watching him die was a punch in the face. But it was not unexpected. At the end of the 1st game we killed the Fireflies. A group that was trying to save the world. That was a very bad move for Joel, even if it meant saving Ellie. So you could have guessed he will have enemies that are trying to get a revenge for that. When you watch Joel die, you feel the same thing as Ellie. You just thing it's **** and you want to kill them for it. But try to sit through it. I knew about the leaks, but I honestly didn't care. I knew they had their reasons for it and that it will be worth it. It was. Just don't play it like "This game is ****". Give it a chance and you may find yourself being grateful for doing so. If you still think it's ****, I don't blame you and I respect it.

Organic character connections developed through action and cumulative small moments, and a feeling of conflicting empathies and emotions when you’re not in alignment with the character, and when the game makes you do something that you don’t want to do. You wrestle with choices in this game in a very different way than you would in a passive medium. It's a violent game, but it's also about empathy, and about breaking the cycle of violence. It's a game that asks a lot of the player, and that's so cool to see.
