This game is a masterpiece, the graphics, and gameplay is very smooth. The tension when you have zombies in the same room as you is frightening. The story has many turns and you to play the game more, I loved this game, and I’ve accepted that Abby isn’t a bad person, Joel made mistakes, and it was his fault he died. Expand

"After reading the kind of online fan fiction that has been written about Joel and Ellie, we vow to never make a sequel to The Last of Us. - Naughty Dog" The Last of Us Part II does to the original game what American Psycho 2 and S. Darko did to American Psycho and Donnie Darko, respectively. This game is an abortion clinic dumpster fire.

The Last of Us Part II, is once again a heart aching journey of loss, love, sacrifice, anger, forgiveness and so much more in an emotionally heavy story and gameplay. It puts the players in completely uncharted land to help deliver a story that heavily questions our motives, our reality and our feelings.

The Last of Us Part II is a masterpiece.

EDIT: Ok, so I finished the game, and decided to change my rating from a 9 to a 10. I had some complaints about the menus and the HUD, at first, but then I later learned that I could resolve those issues with the more obscure "Accessibility" settings. Also, the first game has one of my all-time favorite stories in video games, but I might like the second game's story even more. SoEDIT: Ok, so I finished the game, and decided to change my rating from a 9 to a 10. I had some complaints about the menus and the HUD, at first, but then I later learned that I could resolve those issues with the more obscure "Accessibility" settings. Also, the first game has one of my all-time favorite stories in video games, but I might like the second game's story even more. So emotional and so well done. I heard spoilers before I played the game, but some of the spoilers were inaccurate. Most of the complaints against those spoilers were motivated by bigotry, which is kind of funny now that the spoilers have been discredited. For example, I heard that Abby was a transgender person transitioning from female to male. Nope, she is just muscular and badass, which fits her setting and story exceptionally well. I never liked femme fatales, anyway. They aren't believable. Abby is very believable. Have an open mind. Play this game.

I just want to add my voice to those who are calling out the review-bombers, while being as vague as I possibly can be. It's true, this game is great and it's being attacked by triggered snowflakes. I don't feel the need to talk about gameplay too much, really. Did you like the first one? You'll like this one, then. There are significantly bigger battle arenas, more stealth techniques, etc. Think of Halo 1 vs. Halo 2. Halo 1 was innovative, while 2 didn't innovate so much. Instead, it refined and amped up the style of the first one. Anyway, what I really want to talk about is the "politics" surrounding it.

Some of the major themes behind the original story include things like healthy and unhealthy ways of coping with loss, dealing with difficult truths, and the subversion of expectations. That is exactly what people are getting with this story and these characters as well. The same things that made the ending of the first game such a gut-punch are all here to punch you in the gut again. Sorry, the game doesn't follow some formulaic, Marvel-style character arc. Some people find that **** boring. Sorry that some characters that you probably love are going to get **** on by newer characters. What did you expect from a sequel? A ten-hour campaign about how everything is going great for everybody? It's a game about a **** zombie apocalypse. Things get rough, LIKE THE FIRST GAME. This game isn't going to hold your hand through a cookie-cutter adventure. Like the first game, it will challenge your sense of what should be and what should not be.

Maybe you are uncomfortable with certain character traits that could possibly be considered "PC" by an "SJW?" Well, guess what? Whether you like it or not, those kinds of people exist. They are human, and they can have compelling motivations. Maybe you don't like the fact that they exist? Too bad, because they do. I'm sorry that you don't want to empathize with a type of human whose existence slightly disrupts your worldview. But really, it would be healthy for you to try to empathize, regardless of your personal beliefs. In the first game, I didn't like the existence of the fungus zombies, the cannibals, or Joel's choice at the end. But that stuff is there and you just have to learn to deal with it if you want to play the game. But it's those types of things that made the story/characters so compelling and memorable. The second game also forces you to face more hard truths about what morality is and what happens when there is a lack of it.

I haven't even finished the game, and there have already been three separate cutscenes that made me choke up a bit. I don't do that too much. Even the positive reviews I have seen have complained about the "lack of character development." They either don't know what it is or have no heart/soul. Surely what they mean to say is, "I don't like the way the characters developed." Because character development is definitely there, and it is done well. I can see why people may not like certain plot points, but from an objective perspective, this is good art. This is a great example of video games as an effective and meaningful storytelling tool. On top of that, it's just a really great game to play.

Like most people who loved the original, I had a moment of almost throwing my controller across the room and quitting after a specific playable character switch. Here's the thing, I'm glad I didn't. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Finally played the whole game and wanted to give a short but honest review. I was a big fan of the first one, so I came to the game with really high expectations and it really delivered. The gameplay was amazing and the curveball of playing a little under half of the campaign as Abby was a wrlcomed surprise. The game has no good guys or bad guys. Just people who are consumed by vengeance. What made me not give a higher score is that the game dragged a little bit at the end. But this game is an experience and should be played as probably the last great PS4 game (have not played Ghost of Tsushima yet). Don’t listen to the trolls and the hate, play the game! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’m going to keep this short and simple. The gameplay, graphics and level design are great. The story, however, is pure drivel. Killing off Joel was a bold move, I’ll give the writers that. The death needed to be earned, but the writers failed at this epically. Playing the first half of the Ellie arc was decent storytelling and progression. A revenge tail that I was invested in. The second half of the game was a slog. I hated Abby and every character in the second half was contrived and boring. I didn’t care about a single one of them. The only joy I got was when Abby would die (sometimes I would just let it happen). The ending is one of the worst in video game history. Ellie murders hundreds of people and a dog you are forced to kill, but doesn’t kill Abby at the end...GTFO! Leaves her girlfriend (the only part of the story i liked was their relationship) and baby to get one final chance at revenge. Goes through hell again only to free Abby, immediately try to kill her and then almost as quick let her go. I’ve seen failed tv pilots with more story arc and a satisfy finish then this poorly written garbage. Naughty Dog should have hired real writers (movie script, novels) to finish this game. Anybody who tells you this story is more then drivel is simple in the brain period. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Here’s the thing. Everyone’s complaining about the game and the story, and I can sorta understand why. But the last of us 2 has a story. I rather liked it. It just doesn’t care if you like how the story goes, and that’s where a lot of people’s issue lies. It isn’t meant to be a happy story, it isn’t meant to be a “all nicely tied up/satisfying” story. And that’s ok. Not all story’s are happy, not all endings are. Games are stories. They tell the story they want to, regardless of wether or not it’s the story YOU wanted it to be. I think this game emphasizes that pretty well. And it doesn’t take away from the game being great. It’s a fun game, with a lot of memorable moments. People just don’t like that it isn’t the story THEY wanted. That’s all. Expand

The is the single most perfect game I have ever played, from a game play perspective. And the worst game I have ever played from a story perspective. The choice to make a villain out of our hero and a hero out of the games villain is stupid, lazy, and ultimately gross. The decision to then attempt to make the game critic proof is laughable.

Any rating under 9/10 is a non-sense. And consider even that as underrated.

Such a thrilling game! I have to admit the first 3 hours were disappointing. But the story evolves from hour to hour and kept myself super excited. The story itself is in my opinion a masterpiece. The change of perspectives from victim to murder (?) is implemented in such a good way that you will find your peace with the end of the game. I also have to admit that I never played a game as brutal as this one before. But somehow it makes sense to emphasize the feelings of the characters. Overall the game is great, the gameplay, the cinematics, the conversations, the environment. Horrible game horrible. I really liked the first one. But not so much for the game play. It's one of those games where you really liked the characters and the story. So in the second one they messed up the characters, made the story trash, and kept the same sub par gameplay. I just thought the game was ok at best

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game filled me with emotions and made me numb at the same time. Saying the story is great, I believe, is untrue to the game itself. TLOU2 is a gut wrenching, depressing **** game. When the credits rolled I sat in silence and stared at my tv for a solid ten minutes devoid of emotion. The game doesn’t make you feel good. It doesn’t cater to fan service. It’s not a copy of the first game. It is a gripping, realistic take on a story of vengeance in its most primal and unflattering form. Naughty Dog did a great job of making me feel the emotional toll of this game and that is something I don’t often see in video games. Expand

It's dark and does not conform to the expected norms of games, but it is excellent in terms of gameplay and is without peers in the way that it conveys a story. I can't bring myself to give a 10 to a game that ripped my heart from my chest and stomped on it, but I probably should. It moves the medium forward.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
