This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. WARNING: THIS IS A VERY VERY VERY SPOILER FILLED REVIEW

People who hate on this game and refuse to play it because of what happens at the beginning have never actually watched and/or read Game of Thrones and it shows.

This story is in no way shape or form, a happy story. Everyone has become so accustomed to happy endings or things going exactly the way they want it to. This is story is tragic, depressing, violent and brutal, sickening and it. Is. Brilliant. From watching Ellie slowly slip into madness as she runs through Seattle on her Quest to find and kill everyone involved with Joel being murdered. The scene where Ellie is at the hospital beating the **** out of Nora for information on Abby. Ellie killing Owen and Mel and then realizing that Mel is (or was, at that point) pregnant. Her fight with Abby in the theater begging Abby not to kill Dina because she is pregnant as well. ALL of that is a story of what revenge REALLY does to you.

With Abby's story, I was **** pissed at the beginning. I was screaming at the top of my lungs and then later on I am forced to **** play as the character that I hate? No no no no no. **** that. But I kept playing and you start to slowly understand everything about why she did what she did. The story humanized her and I hated that when the ending came, I was pissed that I loved it.

Neil Druckman and everyone at Naughty Dog are sick in the head. They make you care about a character that you are supposed to hate down to her core. Or at least care for her to SOME degree. (I'd be lying if I said I didn't die on purpose MULTIPLE times during the Abby and Ellie fight in the theater just because I wanted to see Abby die.) But at the very end... I didn't want that. I did not want to see Ellie slip into a place of no return. If she actually went through with it, darkness would have consumed her and then Last of Us Part 3 would have just been about Lev getting revenge on Ellie or some **** So I believe the ending was perfect.

This game does not deserve the flack it is getting. It's is a tragic and depressing story and everyone needs to stop wining about it. 10 out of 10. Hands down.

I think a lot of the people who dislike this game have played for an hour up until Joel's death and then get a refund. You have to play the full game in order to empathize with Abby's character. For the people who didn't like the game's story, I understand and respect your opinion. HOWEVER, there are people who refuse to play the game and came here to give it a 0 anyway. I really want to warn against that, not because TLoU2 deserves a good score or anything, but rather it completely ruins any merit of future User Reviews. User Reviews are important because it gives the general consensus of the average person's experience, but because some of the negative reviews didn't even play the game, let alone experience it in its entirety, it doesn't do the true score justice.

As I said before, it's understandable why people HATED this game. The prologue is incredibly rough, especially for those who had emotional attachments to the first one. But through the inciting incident, the story earns your (the player's) anger and hatred towards the antagonists. While the narrative certainly has some bumps here and there, particularly with pacing, it overall tells a poignant and bleak tale of revenge, hate, and dehumanization. I truly believe TLoU2 pushes the boundaries of storytelling and makes use of player interaction, in which it asks the audience to try and empathize with every character involved. I don't agree with some of the reviews claiming there are plot holes or felt that it was all pointless. There is a moral lesson to be had by the end, and it reveals what happens when we let hate and anger cloud our judgment.

The gameplay is a vast improvement from the first one. I didn't necessarily "enjoy" the first Last of Us, although it did have great moments. Part II has a more fluid and cinematic feel, making use of the PS4's technology and turning every combat encounter into a harrowing and stressful experience. Throughout the game I've had a stealth section turn into an intense firefight, and a firefight turn into a health-draining escape. Character development occurs through the action and really unravels who they are. The only thing I'm not a fan of are the QTE's.

It's unfortunate that the legacy of TLoU2 will be its controversy more so than the quality. I really think this game deserves a chance since it's mostly based on player experience. As someone who was spoiled by a major event in the story before the game came out, the emotional beats still landed and by the end, I felt exactly what the game intended. Again, if you didn't like the game after playing it, I completely understand, but for the ones who simply want to leave comments like "I hate gay people" in their review, you are ruining future User Scores.

    2. There's a lot hate in these comments and that's all well and fine people can have different opinions but 80% of the vitriol here would be non existent if this story revolved around straight cis white males let's be honest. These negative reviews pan this or that with hollow excuses that can be seen through. Go into this game with an open mind like I did and I really don't think you'll be disappointed, people are projecting their mindsets and opinions onto this too much because it's not what they wanted.
To combat some critics I just read,
    1. Environmental puzzles are way better in this game it's not just find the ladder/pallet any more there's more options and routes and as such becomes less repetitive.
    2. Stealth is way better, yeah not accurate but hey all games use the hide in tall grass bit.
    3. Stealth is better because it's easier to get back into stealth and because melee/CQC has been greatly improved. The addition of a dodge mechanic makes hand to hand such a better option than the first and much more fun. It's not just button mash square until their dead anymore. You learn how different enemies attack hand to hand. Some are flurry attacks some are one and done, etc... 4. Enemies aren't scripted like the last game which balances the new strength of melee in that you have to be aware of how many enemies are around because they don't do that dumb thing other games do where the enemies will wait for you to get out of a grapple. They will pile onto you which adds more depth to combat.
    5. If you read another users review that says, "How this game is full of such SJW political agenda **** and you agree then yeah probably don't play it because you sound like the type to not be open minded enough to get me involved in the story. Just saying. Oh 6.
Some say they didn't change the gameplay or crafting. To that I say what franchises do, COD hasn't changed in decades, Halo, Rockstar (with their absolutely atrocious gameplay) haven't changed GTA or RDR. ND tweaked and improved enough IMO with the dodge addition, more craftable items, more skills to unlock, and adding more ways to stealth (tall grass, silencers, dogs that track your scent) etc... These complaints are where I really see people just looking for things to point at as flaws so they don't get called out for just mindlessly **** on the game because it has a progressive story and progressive stories that dont directly related to their majority privilege outlook. Tbh I feel sad for these individuals because they are just going to dislike everything that comes out in the future with that mentality

I don't ever post game reviews, but after the cathartic experience of finishing this game, and finding out it was review bombed (of course it was), I had to post my thoughts.

I don't ever post game reviews, but after the cathartic experience of finishing this game, and finding out it was review bombed (of course it was), I had to post my thoughts.

This is a story about forgiveness, how hard and downright impossible it can sometimes be, and what that does to the human soul. Structurally, it wasn't working for me fully at first, but by the end it won me over and almost had me in tears. If you're expecting a linear experience like the first game, this is going to be jarring at first.

But of course, that is not the criticism this game is receiving.

Here is a tentpole sequel that had the gumption to feature - with no fanfare - a cast of ethnically diverse women, a lesbian couple, a trans child, and a synagogue.

I think the notion that any of this is "forced" or "distracts from the narrative" is a good litmus test for who is still mired in the patriarchy and who is not.

In the first game - with a story genuinely on par with Children of Men - you play as and grow to empathize with a man named Joel. He then makes irredeemable choices in the name of love and loyalty for his surrogate daughter, Ellie. This dissonance is supposed to make the player uncomfortable. That's what makes the story memorable. Joel murders innocent people, robs Ellie of her agency, and gaslights her.

What I didn't realize is that many fans of the game completely aligned with Joel's choices. There is no moral ambiguity, no internal conflict with their inherent complicity as the player - they believe all his decisions are righteous.

I only learned people felt this way once The Last Of Us II met "Last Jedi" level outrage that - god forbid - there are consequences for those actions. "Controversy," uninitiated bystanders would call it.

The comparison to The Last Jedi is at once fair and flawed. The Last Jedi seemed to consciously highlight women and diversity and was met with much hatred and bigotry. However, unlike The Last Of Us II, The Last Jedi failed (or chose not to) honor the story that came before. It insisted that sort-of-wrong characters like Laura Dern's were squarely in the right, and assassinated the previously likable characters of Poe and Finn, who promised to be very different people in The Force Awakens.

In The Last Of Us II, the characters make decisions that make sense for them, and the game passes no judgment on whether those decisions are right or wrong.

Most importantly, the theme of the game seems to be empathy. The game forces you to play as characters on both sides of a conflict, which is a truly uncomfortable experience. The discomfort is the point.

This seems to be lost on a minority of very loud people. They thought that an influential piece of art condoned their toxic masculinity when it was actually trying to caution against it. The second game lays that bare, in what must seem like an absolute betrayal to them. But the writing didn't change - they just wildly misinterpreted the material.

It's not a coincidence that the first target of their backlash is the game's bolstered representation. Critics of this will insist that they're not any "ist" or "phobic," but that this was not the time or place. Maybe they forget that the first game featured a scene in a church, a gay man, and 3 secondary black characters. Or maybe they'll say that those were limited enough to not "distract" from the story; as if representation and the story were ever at odds.

By all means, we should voice dissatisfaction when a piece of media tokenizes a character or acts self-congratulatory about doing so (re: Le Fou in live-action "Beauty and the Beast"). I personally hate when content feels pandering or preachy (re: live-action "Aladdin," I think I'm sensing a theme here). But The Last Of Us II does not do that. It's depicting life, which happens to contain women, Jews, LGBTQ people, and Asians (among others.) So if seeing a piece of media that does not affirm their distorted worldview causes these (presumably) white (definitely) men distress, I feel genuinely bad for them - they're victims of the patriarchy too.
