This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For me this game is a Dark Masterpiece.

The creators did something risky; they flipped the video game troupe on its head. In nearly every game, we the player and the protagonist mow down, the quote on quote bad guy without really thinking anything about it. But in Last of Us 2, we get to understand the "bad guys" perspective and see their motivations.

Now to the biggest part in the game, The Death of Joel. This was heart wrenching and rage inducing, but something made me pause, it was the anger the "bad guys" had, it made me pause and wonder, Joel what did you?

And that pause and that question made me have a more open mind.

Getting to play as Abby at first was disorientated, I did not want to play with her, she killed Joel, screw her, but as I progressed and I saw the other members of her crew and what they were about, how certain members were disturbed by what happened in Jackson, some were just fine. Others had their own goals, like Manny looking out for his father, Mel trying to figure out how to be with Owen and how her pregnancy was viewed by her members. It was that look into their worlds that made me start to see them as more than just killers but as people trying to survive in this chaotic world. It also made me very conflicted about the fates they would soon suffer

    Back to Ellie

What took by surprise was how Naughty Dog really showed the traumatic effects of PTSD. They did this in Ellie's diary, how she described her thoughts how Joel, how she remember him and sadly every single thought or remembrance was one of jarring pain. Time can heal words, it can take the sting of a traumatic event and either reduces it to a small dull ache or a forgotten vapor. But PTSD takes that traumatic events and put you right to square one, day one of the intense pain. Pain so intense that you lose all sense of where you are, pain so intense that it continues to eat away at the very core of you bit by bit. That was beautifully illustrated by the reappearance of Ellie at the Farmhouse. She was gaunt and weary, she had no therapist to turn to, no bar to go to, no medication to help with the mental anguish, all of the modern conveniences of the modern world were gone, and sadly nothing she attempted to do could help her with her perpetual anguish, except one thing.

Ellie was born into a brutal world, there is no law but survival and anything or anyone that means you or your loved harm, must be killed. Simple as that and for her the only way to quell that anguish is to find and kill Abby, even if it cost her, the hard won peace and happiness she found with Dina.

Now back to Abby – Her design as a character for me was smart, Naughty Dog did not design her to be a classic videogame female beauty like Elena or Chloe from Uncharted, they did not want to rely upon looks to convey any sense of empathy for her, instead they relied on her all consuming quest to find the man who murder her father, who murder the leader of the Fireflies, the man who destroyed her whole world, Joel. And also the aftermath that followed. They relied on showing her vulnerability and her fear of heights, and finally they relied on her redemption arc, to save to two kids, even if they were her sworn enemy.

    The End.
The jarring parts of this game was the illustration of what blind rage fueled obsession can bring, and that absolute dissolution of person as the continue on that path.

The absolute most jarring part, was the end.

Ellie finally finds Abby, and Abby is longer a She Hulk of a character, she is withered and beaten, all of her rage, of her strength, even her trademark pony tail is gone, she is a broken shell of herself, and sadly even as Ellie sees this broken version of Abby , she still cannot let go of her pain. They have a truly sad and Ellie has a pyrrhic win, and just right at the moment where she can finally kill Abby, she has a warm remembrance of Joel, finally a memory that is not jolting, but one that sees him healthy and ok.

In that moment she lets go of it all, the hate, the rage all of it.

I see a lot of negative criticism for this game. I really think people cannot hyper-impose their reality into a world that is completely different than there's. The sad thing is that people really are missing the point when it comes to how people truly deal with trauma, everyone is different. Everyone will handle it different and Naughty Dog attempted to show how pain and obsession can have some very devastating effects to not only the person dealing with the pain but also to those around them.

I say play it again, and remove that thought of what you would do, instead realize you are truly witnessing a tale of descent...

A tale that was beautifully told.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a biased review, to pretend otherwise would be dishonest. It’s really nice seeing myself in a game for once. But holy ****, the last few hours I was just begging through the screen for Ellie to give up her quest for revenge and go home with Dina. When the scene at the farm with Ellie and Dina and JJ happened I started crying, I thought that was gonna be it. Fade to black sitting on a tractor with her kid, the cycle of violence broken, and a happy ending. I feel absolutely gutted that she came back to find Dina had left. I’m hoping we’ll eventually find out that they get back together and raise their kid together. I want a happy ending, I want people to like me to have happy endings.

Not to mention, Joel reminds me a lot of my dad. The way he awkwardly tried to connect with Ellie and especially the way he asked Ellie if Dina was her girlfriend. I played the prologue on Friday and gave my dad an early Father’s Day call...

I really really liked this game I think it’s better than part 1. But I do feel as though my feelings were held hostage, queer women never get happy endings it seems. I feel like this game affects us differently as some of us probably desperately want to see some happy endings (which are in short supply for queer women.) Everyone’s able to sympathize, but I’ve never felt this kind of empathy for a video game character before. On another similar note, having their only trans character receive pain because of who he is intrinsically and not his choices, like every other character in this game kind of took me out of the experience. It didn't feel authentic or grounded in the narrative they built which revolves around the consequences of your actions. I'm not saying it was the worst choice they could have made but he didn't need to get dead named so often or have all of his trauma result from his being trans, there were dozens of smarter ways to write him into the story as elegantly as they wrote in Ellie being gay.

probably an 8/10 realistically due to (pretty sizable) pacing issues and their treatment of the one trans character but I'm rating this based on how it's affected my life and me emotionally because I believe that is a worthwhile perspective. 10/10 game for ME, wow.

What I think they are trying to go for in this game is a lesson on perspective when you play as Abby you get to see her as a human and why she did it now whether u pity her or still hate her is up to you, personally I still hated her. I think the story in this game is a new kind of story that is interesting. Neil took a lot of risks with this game and most of it worked out. For the people who think that there is forced identity politics and forced LGBT ideas, there's not, Ellie has been known that she was lesbian since the DLC from the first game and honestly the fact that there are some LGBT aspects in this game makes it a little more interesting. Now I'm not some big LGBT supporter that thinks stuff like this should be shoved down peoples throats at all i dont think that's right but I think that the LGBT aspects in the game fit and really what does it matter, it makes some good story points too.

This game is definitely one of the more realistic games, this had me on my feet for almost the entire game because I couldn't predict what would happen i loved the game play it felt fluid and the way you could move your character was awesome.

Did it match up to the first game? Story wise? No, definitely not the first game is a masterpiece and I think pretty much everyone would agree. But I still think that this game is one of a kind and definitely worth playing.

Really just Joel and Ellie running around the country again getting into mayhem again with better graphics is all everyone wanted?

I loved the first game. I got the platinum. With this game i was ready for something different. Not only was the narrative different it was clever and it resonated.

Does anybody realize that ND wanted everyone to hate abby? They gave no reason to like her at first. She killed joel after joel and tommy saved her. We knew she had a reason but damn she killed joel!!

This is now a revenge game in our minds for 15 hours. We gotta get that ****

Then the confrontation comes and we bam switch to abby.

I dont see why people say that naughty dog forced the sympathy with abby. Shes still an incredibly flawed women. She is "a piece of **** as mel says. She also was ready to happily slit dina's throat after she found out she was pregnant.

What we do find out is her motivation for killing joel. She spent 4 years making herself a weapon of revenge.

While she watches her friends die over 3 days she tries to get some of what she was before her father died back by helping lev.

In the end letting go of hate is the theme here for both women.

I truly loved the experience of last of us 2 the gameplay was great the visuals where top notch and the game surprised me which is all that i could hope for.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolutely incredible. Never in my life as a game left me with tears running down my face. When I first started playing as Abby I was pissed I had to play was the person who tortured and murdered Joel. After "Day 2" I had no choice but to be invested in her story. I was again upset when I had to attack Ellie and then elated when Lev stops "me" from murdering Dina. When Ellie tracks Abby down in California I was fully prepared to murder Abby but she had Lev with her and they were both broken, when Ellie is drowning Abby I literally had tears running down my face.

GOTY for me, never has a game made me so emotionally invested in the "villain" (whatever that means), because in Abby's story Ellie is the villain, so to be able to see both sides made me rethink how much I hated Abby in the beginning. Such an amazing and unique way to tell a story.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Abby. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of this writing, to realise that they're not just deep- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Abby's character truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the mystery in Abby's existential catchphrase "Guess," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Neil Druckmann's genius writing itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them.

And yes, by the way, i DO have a Abby sex scene tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
