This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ooohhh boy... I'll start with the positives by saying that the game is visually stunning, sounds great, is rock solid mechanically, and has a bevy of difficulty & quality of life options that make the game easily accessible to practically everyone. However... the story is an absolute **** I can forgive killing Joel, I don't like it obviously, but it gives the game a strong (if somewhat overused & predictable) narrative drive. But the constant jumping back and forth between the present & the events that happened after the end of the first game kill any semblance of a consistent pace. Putting you in the shoes of Joel's killer was an interesting move, but hurt the drive to play the game (especially since they did it at roughly the halfway point of the game, when you knew who & what she was - starting the game with her, culminating in Joel's death, would've been a better move, imo [and, yes, I know - that would've necessitated a flashback at the end of Abby's portion of the game]). The biggest offense however, is the fact that this is ultimately a story of revenge... that doesn't end with either party dying. Instead we get Ellie sacrificing EVERYTHING for revenge, but when the critical moment comes - she doesn't take it. Nor does Abby kill her. Making the game's narrative not just poorly executed, but hollow as well. Sadly the game is a grievous disappointment, not in spite of its mechanical & visual glory, but because of it. It's such a glaring difference in quality between the technological aspects of the game & the narrative, that the narrative's shortcomings become impossible to ignore. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Open your heart and mind. This game is not bad. It's not about character growth but digression in Ellies case. Its about her losing Joel thus losing herself (just like the song Future days). And if your review bombing it well I got no words for you. This game is about forgiveness, Ellie forgiving Joel for what he did and the player forgiving Abby for what she did, that my interpretation anyways. If you cant forgive you wont like this game, doesn't mean it deserves review bombing... Expand

Story was bad has a Pacing issues the game’s character are not Memorable Graphics are good But what does it matter if the story just doesn’t keep up the choices in this game just leave you questioning the direction they were trying to go with in my opinion The first game was a masterpiece in this game with the complete opposite

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think there are four main problems most review bombers have: 1. You‘re playing a gay character and her sexuality is displayed in the game. „Politics are being shoved down their throats“. Gay people exist... and they make out. Get over it.

    2. They can‘t handle Joels death. The game makes you feel uncormfortable at times. 3. You have to play as Abby, who is not „hot“ and more tanked than 80% of the male players... aaaand killed Joel.

    4. Lev is a trans person, although i don‘t think a lot of the 0 score reviewers have played long enough to get to know Lev.

I had a blast. I had to think of it for days after I finished it and now I‘m starting New Game +. I didn‘t feel comfortable or happy about some plot points as well, but that’s the point. TLOU2 makes you question your characters choices and turns a simple revenge plot into a complex and dark character study. What I also read a lot: It has good graphics, but...

It doesn‘t have just „good graphics“... The world they have built is absolutely incredible. So much detail and scope. Amazing physics and stellar acting that transfers to the virtual characters so vividly. These are people, not videogame characters. I don‘t know what ND does different about their characters compared to other games, but they just pop. Each and every side character has imperfections and personality, it‘s just amazing.

The only downside to me is the gameplay. Don‘t get me wrong, it all works fine and it’s fun to play, but I don‘t like the clear pacing of setpieces. You are always „told“ what situation you are running into. I don‘t want to know if I‘m safe when exploring or if clickers are in the area. It‘s an unpredictable and brutal world, so please don‘t take the tension out of it by letting me know what type of enemy will be next.

A very decisive game, clearly. The story takes risks, and doesn't play it safe. The best literary work does the same. No one wins a Man Booker Prize for writing what was expected or safe.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. this game isn’t perfect by any means, but i have come to enjoy it a lot. Joel’s death in the first 2 HOURS of gameplay was a ridiculously poor choice on naughty dogs end but I think it ultimately strengthens Ellie’s character much more ( btw she is a great character on her own ). Actual gameplay and visuals were absolutely phenomenal as well as the scenery, the only downside for me is the characters/character development. I think the whole switching to abby half way through the game is a very clever idea and it would help us sympathize with her more if her and her friends were interesting. I don’t get how we’re supposed to agree with a girl who just killed one of the most beloved characters in history whom which we’ve played an entire game with, all because we played 10 minutes with her and her dad. Maybe naughty dog didn’t want us to sympathize with abby but just understand where she’s coming from in which I do but her and her dads story do not hold a candle to Ellie and Joel’s. Also this is undoubtedly a trilogy, the ending sets us perfectly up for a 3rd game so let’s hope naughty dog gets their **** together. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. the only reason this game sold well is because of the last game, and the only reason this game is hated by fans is because they trashed all the characters. the argument of a group seeking out joel to kill him is possible in this world and joel not be suspicious of a group? then ellie breaks her character through out the whole game?! a revenge story when she wasn't every condition for that life. none of them choices make sense. i get you want to top your last game, but world building would have been a better choice to do that then trying to be a game of thrones wanna be. at the end of the day the story doesn't say anything, the characters don't grow, the world is nonexistent, all we know is bad **** happens and there are more people out there. what about the world?! we see a football stadium and tall buildings, what about the people? they die right away and then cuts to them, they're dead, it doesn't matter anymore. a story can make or break media and this story broke this game, just trash way to write it and is how to destroy a potential franchise. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. (Barely a review, it's more like a review of some negative reviews i've read)
This game is a masterpiece in storytelling. A winning achievement for gaming, this is a story that couldn't be told as effectively any other medium. When i say masterpiece i don't imply that this isn't a game without faults, but in my experience, i'm yet to find a game that i can't find faults in. Even in games others consider masterpieces. Unfortunately, the controversy surrounding the game clouded an experience that had to be played without any sort of bias. The hate for the game dates back before any of the leaks had occurred. My theory regarding the reason for this i prefer not to discuss. The bottom line is that people were making dumb arguments before the game had come out, and soon the consensus became "bad game". It certainly didn't help that some people misremember/misinterpret the ending of the first one. They think that Joel is a good person that deserved nothing but the best, when the game makes it clear that Joel was a broken selfish man that admitted to murdering innocents for personal gain in the past. They try to justify his actions at the end, when Ellie herself condemns him for disrespecting her only dream in life. In short, it was never about Ellie, it was that he wasn't strong enough to make the right choice. People mistake the fact that he is an amazingly written likable character with him being a good person. This is all to say that, to me, and i think to any who understood the first game, his death was a logical event, justified by the story itself. If Ellie gets on the path of vengeance over the death of her parental figure, isn't it logical that there would be people wanting to kill Joel when he killed countless fathers? And not all of them were bad people. The main argument people will make is that his death was badly written or humiliating (well yes, sorry, this is a realistic setting, his death had meaning to his character and that's all that matters). This is incorrect, by any standard. But you've have probably heard it a million times, or experienced it yourself. Well this is the effect that bias has on people. I have written more than 6000 characters explaining why nothing about his death was badly written, or explaining any supposed "plot hole". I am yet to come across someone who can prove any plot hole. There's a 5000 character max for this review, so i can't post it. But just by watching the scene again i'm sure you can come to that same conclusion. "Joel gave his name like an idiot, he would never have done that" Wrong. Abby already knew his name. Tommy told her. Why? Well excuse Tommy for not thinking of a false name when being on the verge of being eaten by a horde with slim chances of survival. He just didn't imagine that he's talking to the daughter of a Firefly Joel murdered 4 years ago, and that she somehow knows where he lives, his name, but *not how he looks*. Other people will say that Joel wouldn't have trusted Abby. And i agree, until you watch the scene and realize there was literally no other choice. It was trusting her or dying. Literally. That was their best and only chance. That's what they say. Moving along, people say that it's stupid that Ellie doesn't kill Abby at the end. The context needed to explain this requires 25 hours of story that lead up to that moment. The reason is simple. Abby doesn't deserve to die because she has learned from her actions, feels guilt, and has paid a tremendous price (people often forget Ellie kills ALL of her friends and "boyfriend"). And then, she spared Ellie. For the second time. She proved merciful by not killing her at the start (because for her it was about justice, Joel deserved death, but let Ellie live, because she had nothing to do with it). And then she proved merciful once again, because she knows she doesn't win anything by killing her, it will just make things worse, even if Ellie killed everyone she cared about. And then you have Ellie's side, where she gradually realizes that she has become a monster, a torturer, no better than Abby herself, someone who would hurt her loved ones if it meant getting revenge. She says so herself, at some point, it stopped being about Joel. She knows she can't justify what she's doing, and so she spares Abby, because she knows it won't bring Joel back. If anything, it will kill whatever trace of humanity Joel left in her.
And still, there's so much to say, so much to explain, justify, because people just can't get enough of hating the game. Some hate the game for external reasons, some hate it because they heard it's bad, some hate it because they played it but didn't give it a fair chance, some hate it because they didn't understand the first one, and some hate it because of justifiable reasons. I could make an equally long review all of the virtues of the game, and some criticisms that i have, but hey, who will even read it. I just wished they had given the game a fair chance. Have a nice day.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I honestly don’t get the negativity behind this game, I’ve just finished playing and honestly, I cried many manly tears. When Joel died the way he did I was angry, sad and just confused, I didn’t know how to react and seeing Ellie just as this broken girl trying to grieve the passing of the only father figure she had in her life was truly heartbreaking to watch and play through.

The character development in this game is amazing because I went from hating Abby and the rest of the members of the knockoff Fireflies to actually liking them and hating the fact that they died, it’s safe to say playing this game is probably what it feels to have Bipolar, one minute I’m sad, one minute I’m happy and the next I’m pissed off by something that’s happened.

I almost lobbed my controller when Abby shot Tommy, I honestly thought she killed him, and I wasn’t ready for that to happen, not quite yet anyways.

I want to talk about the ending as that’s where people seem to be annoyed about the most which honestly I can kind of understand but the way I look at it is this, Ellie has lost everything, she has lost friends, she has lost her family, she has lost everything and now she is alone, I feel like she realised that she related to Abby at that moment when she was drowning her at sea and it was at that point Ellie simply, gave up. She saw that she would be no better than Abby in that situation, and I honestly love that ending, I would love to be able to play as Abby again if there is a third game which I honestly hope that’s there is. They left the game on a (somewhat) cliffhanger, Ellie arrives back home to find out that Dina has up and left with little baby JJ. I want to know what happens next and I hope I don’t have to wait 7 years to find out!
