    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Incredibly disappointing! Combat and gameplay slightly improved from the last game, but the story is god awful. Ellie doesn't feel like Ellie. Joel's decision at the end of the last game is declared fundamentally WRONG, and he's a bad person who needs to make it right. No profound moral dilemma, just a hamfisted message about the "cycle of vengeance", and a depressing one at that. Druckmann was allowed a little too much creative freedom, and as a result, the game doesn't know what it wants to be. It tries to do several things at once, and fails intensely at all of them. Naughty Dog has broken their consistent cycle of quality, and sh*t the bed in one of the biggest franchises in
    AAA gaming. The ending leaves WAY too much open to interpretation, making it impossible to predict the likelihood of a sequel. If they do make a third game, I hope they steer far away from what they've done here! 1 OUT OF 10! Joel deserved better!

    Post Script: Just remembered all the early advertisements for this game, and how prominent Joel's character was in them. We were all lead to believe that Joel would be very important to this next game, and Ellie's motivation would be the death of Dina. Naughty Dog literally LIED in their advertising. DO NOT SUPPORT THIS LACK OF TRANSPARENCY BY PURCHASING THE GAME, TAKE IT FROM SOMEONE WHO PAID FULL PRICE TO BE DEPRESSED FOR 20+ HOURS! SAVE YOUR MONEY!

    Really bad writing. The story is extremely divisive among fans for good reason. I did not have fun playing as Abby for over half the game, and thought the story’s theme and attempt to teach us a lesson about why revenge is bad was halfhearted and lackluster.

    The Last of Us Part II is a dark, brutal, depressing, and intense ride. From the get-go, you are thrown right into the fray with hardly any time to catch your breath. I fully believe that if you want the best possible experience, it’s an absolute must to play through on Survivor. With that said, let’s dig right in.

    What I enjoyed the most was the gameplay. If you play on Survivor; patience, resource management, and planning are critical. Going into each encounter with guns blazing might leave you in a bad spot in the next encounters, so you’re forced to think about how you want to take on each fight, how much resources you’re willing to spend, and utilize the environment to your advantage. Do you want to be stealthy, use your weapons at your disposal, a mixture of both, or simply avoid fighting altogether? That choice is up to you, but again, there are considerations you’ll have to make. The tension you’ll feel in each encounter will make you appreciate that momentary respite when you make it through, and gives you some time to breathe and prepare. I may be in the minority when I say I enjoyed the story despite being controversial amongst critics. I appreciate Naughty Dog’s willingness to tell a story that isn’t simply black or white. What their tale does explore is the gray area, the area that is neither right nor wrong, difficult to judge, and does not have a clear and definitive answer. It was a risk the developers took, one that many people either hate or love, but I believe it paid off in the end.

    My one critique of this game is that, although I do very much enjoy the gameplay, it will feel repetitive not very long into the journey. Once you’ve seen one fight, you’ve basically seen them all with some very small variations. If Naughty Dog would have thrown in curveballs and different mechanics to deal with as you progressed, I think it could have kept things fresh and provide some really unique battles.

    The bottom line is, The Last of Us Part II is a fantastic game. The world and atmosphere is beautifully crafted, and each struggle will leave you triumphant. It very much deserves your attention and play through, and so I highly recommend The Last of Us Part II.

    This is the best game I have played on the ps4. It definitely doesn't pull punches and makes the story so much more interesting, it makes the world feel more real.
    Art is about designing experiences, so the user feels what you intended as a designer, as an artist. Making someone feel something they want to feel is easy. The opposite requires perfection.

    After beating the game, I feel sorry for all the staff for programming and artworks.

    The narrative destroys the game and all the hard work from the game makers and the expectations from fans in the last 7 years.

    Many people complain about the story. Obviously it's not as good as the first 'The Last of Us' but that does not make it a bad story and although it's just 'John Wick' except Joel is the dog, I found the story satisfying and a good enough follow up to the 2013 original. The only parts that really bothered me was Abby's side of the story, not only because I had to play as the woman that killed Joel but because her character is quite inconsistent with her actions and just as you think she's found her humanity through caring for ex-seraphites: Lev and Yara, she shows no hesitation to commit horrible acts not so long after. This problem affects some of the characters from the original but is reasonable as it's realistic that people would be different than they were 6 years ago.
    Story = 6/10
    On the other hand, the audio, visuals and gameplay of 'The Last of Us II' is what makes this game incredible. At some points I didn't know whether a sound was from the game or somewhere in my house, bloody brilliant. The graphics are better than they've ever been, i wish real life looked as good. Some scenes looked as if they were taken straight from a painting backed by some beautiful scores and white noise to immerse you to the fullest extent.
    Graphics and Audio = 10
    The quality of the combat depends on what difficulty you play on, if you play on the easier difficulties it will make for more options when dealing with a group of enemies, with more resources and more predictable enemy paths, but from my experience on Survivor difficulty I saw Ellie transform into Solid Snake having to make every shot count, managing the scarce resources that you have which makes for a harder but more satisfying combat system.
    Apart from the combat 'The Last of Us II' offers some basic puzzles, hundreds of collectibles and some exploration to bridge between the action. This part of the gameplay is not the focus but does not become boring or slow down the pacing of the story.
    Gameplay = 9/10

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There's only one thing that really hinders this game. The story. Everything else is excellent. The voice acting, the graphics, just the over all execution of the technical side is pretty great. I am a big fan of the first game, and i liked the simplicity of the crafting. The stealth left some to be desired but I never looked at it as a straight stealth game.

    The story is.. Its just ham handed in how they try to get you to care even an ounce about the characters from the outside perspective. These characters literally come into your home in the beginning and bludgeon you're beloved character to death. While i sincerely believe their reasons why they did it, as a fan of the first game and the main characters I simply wanted one thing and that was to kill those people (in game duh). I wanted nothing to do with them but for them to suffer and be scared I was coming for them. This is not what we got. We play as them and the game gives us all these nice and caring perspectives and all the reason why they think we should like the character Abbey but really. I couldn't care less about her and her journey. I wanted nothing to do with her or her friends. I loathed the entirety of her side of the game play. I do not know what drove the writers/creators to go this route but I just can't wrap my head around why they did it. Why did they think this was a good move?

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Really I'm giving it an 8.5. 8 just seems too low.

    SPOILERS.

    OK. I'm confused.

    I was fortunate enough to avoid most of the leaks, but two things I did see were A) You play partly as Abby, who's a transsexual villain and B) Joel dies (I didn't see how). For the whole game I was waiting for some big reveal that would show that Abby was transsexual...it never came. One of the main reasons people were so angry about the leaks were that she was trans. Just complete and utter nonsense. The way this game has been review bombed with 0's and 1's and 2's is really weird and honestly embarrassing.

    There are problems with this game, absolutely. Some real problems. But if you're bothered that Abby is muscly...weird. If you're bothered that Ellie is a lesbian...weird. If you're bothered that a side character shaved her head because she wants to look like a boy...weird. Is it fueled with agenda? Sure. Is it pushing boundaries? Absolutely. Should it mean you score it with a 0 out of 10? Absolutely not.

    Starting with the positives...what a GAME this is. I'm no gaming expert so I'm going to struggle to get all the words out correctly. But as a GAME (separate to the storyline), it doesn't get much better. Insane graphics, probably the best I've seen. The fluidity is flawless. Animations are incredible. I personally love the changes in pace between action and taking it easy. Gun play feels very satisfying. Enemy AI is very good (and adjustable). The zombies are scarier then before. The minor details are there. Sound wise it's incredibly eerie and atmospheric. The moment where you first come across the Scars and get hit with the arrow...I jumped out of my seat! The high pitched whistle, the deep throng of petrifying music as you pull the arrow out of your shoulder. Just amazing. I've seen the gameplay be labelled as boring and not worthy of a PS4 title, and I genuinely find those opinions laughable. The gameplay lived up to everything I expected. Such an improvement on part 1 (which you would expect after 7 years). But how about the story?

    This is where I do have problems, and can't help but feel a little disappointed. I'm the biggest fan of part 1...my favourite game of all time. And a huge part of that is down to the incredible story...the connection between Joel and Ellie, the emotion in the cut scenes, every character that was introduced along the way, how the narrative twisted and turned. Just a phenomenal story. I did have a feeling that Joel's decision at the end of part 1 would come back to bite him. But did I think it would bite him like THIS? 2 hours into the game, with no context as to why Abby wanted to do it, after having PLAYED as Abby?! For the record...I have no issue with Joel dying. I don't even have an issue with the way in which he died. It was shocking, powerful. You felt a sense of dread. When the final blow lands and the sound goes to that high pitched screech like you yourself have just suffered a bang to the head. It was very well done. The writers are entitled to take the story how they see fit, and if that means Joel dying, so be it. I'm sad about it, I loved him, I didn't want him to die. But if that's the direction they wanted it to go, OK. Some people in these reviews have been acting like spoilt children. The problem I DO have is A) the fact we had no context as to why it was happening, B) How lucky Abby was to find herself in that situation and C) Not getting to experience the immediate reaction.

    I feel it would have been better for Abby to infiltrate Jackson first. Become a member of the community. We could learn about her back story. We could understand why she wanted to kill Joel. THEN we could switch to Ellie trying to get revenge. Asking the player to be as understanding as what Naughty Dog want is dangerous, and clearly in this case hasn't really worked. And one thing I loved from the first game was the emotion, how it would have me on the verge of tears at times. The scene where Sam dies and Henry turns the gun on himself. The scene where Ellie explains to Joel how everyone she cared about has left her or died. I didn't get any of that from this game. The reaction to Joel's death is rushed. The game seemingly doesn't care about Jesse dying. The flashbacks with Joel and Ellie both could have been more emotional, fleshed out and satisfying. That's my main issue.

    I ended up liking Abby. During the final fight sequence I was pressing buttons I didn't want to press, begging Ellie not to do it. I was glad she didn't. But even the way that came about, Ellie leaving practically a dream life with Dina and the baby behind, seemed silly and forced.

    All in all I think it's an amazing game, slightly let down by a cluttered story, which tries so hard to make you side with a new character. The Last Of Us is Ellie's story. And I really hope they do a part 3 with a stronger narrative and a happy ending for a character we love so much.

    Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then...
