Spitting in the face of fans of the first part. The storyline does not correspond to the logical chain of fanatics of the first part.

Naughty dog did not disappoint. This game is an epic masterpiece! The game was much longer than I anticipated, and it took me some time to finish. But what an emotional rollercoaster of a game it was!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is a beautiful, complex experience. Overall, the story is great, but there are some moments where the writing is "convenient" for the story. However, I do not feel that the few lapses in writing take away from the story or user experience. The story itself is a beautiful and terrifying portrayal of PTSD, revenge, and growing up. There are tangible consequences to the characters' actions. It makes you question why you're helping these characters, as their drives for revenge and justice visibly tear apart their relationships. At times, it's almost like watching a family member struggle with their mental health, except you have to act as the person struggling. In terms of gameplay, the game works really well. My only complaint would be that there is a delay between selecting an item or weapon and being able to use it. I can deal with the texture popping, though it can get distracting at times, especially after you scope out of a weapon or come around a corner quickly. Expand

And the lighting can be funny at certain times but overall really beautiful game, thats just being nitpicky. I really loved Ellie’s character development and came to love Abby’s character despite what she did. The story came to a very nice end and I could even see a third game being made with this. Really well done, will play through again many more times just as the first one! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Imo the story wasn't as good as the first one, and I'm confused about the ending like everyone else after my first playthrough. But I'm starting to appreciate it as I started to see it not just as a revenge story. I saw it as Ellie engaged in all those cruelties attempting to forgive Joel for what he did at the firefly hospital. Towards the end of her journey, Ellie realized how similar she had become to the very person she resented (and loved at the same time) and were possibly finally ready to forgive Joel. I'm not saying this justifies Ellie letting Abby live in their final encounter, but it could be one possible explanation. Gameplay-wise, amazing graphics, great atmosphere, absolutely adore the open-world section in Seattle, wish Naughty Dog had added more sections like that. In general, a decent game, I gave it 8/10. The game is interesting to your idea, but the game is literally the first with the best graphics they didn’t have the minimum amount of work to bring something new and for the first being an incredible game they copied it thinking that the game was going to be good, but the game has an interesting idea, great graphics, its dynamics very well done, an extremely interesting story

If the story beats were less disjointed or cut entirely this would have been a 10/10 game. But the game loses focus, characters act against previously established mindframes and some areas of the game seem to be there just to add additional playtime. Over all 7.5.

Don't buy....Worst game I've ever seen, such a shame as the seven year wait got wasted within the first hour of gameplay and if you decide you want to torture yourself and play the whole game you get made to play as the villain for the majority of it, a game built on revenge but you never get what was promised revenge instead you get a badly written story on why you should feel sorry for the villen and her god awful father who in the first game wanted to kill a sleeping kid for a chance for a cure without her consent or knowledge that she was being sacrificed yet naughty dog wants me to sympathies with this lunatic and his even more messed up daughter, no A is the worst character to ever exist and should of been punished by the player for what she did. I just wanted a game with Joel and Ellie but Instead I got this trainwreck of a game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The original Last of Us marvels in graphical department, and originality of story, not to mention game AI and physic. While the successor, which surely has better graphic, but have many dissapoinment especially in story line. The 2nd one is lack of story originality, and trying to polished it by offering unexpected event. But did it work? Absolutely not, because it has a cliche revenge storyline and also repetitive mission, slash and kill, which one easily get bored during 2/3 of gameplay. Gamers have loss the curiosity when playing the game, the curiosity quessing what comes next in the story.

What gamers really wanted to know is how Joel and Ellie bond grows during all the year, and years to come. Their stories still has alot to explore. And if Joel eventually died, it should not because of his careless, but his willingness to do so, sacrifice for his love one.

There are still many stories involving Last of Us world. Exploring uncharted world of fungus, how other countries deals with it, knowing what started the outbreak, innovating science explanation, how species cross transmission of cordyceps happened in the first place, knowing the patient zero and moral fight decision along the way. There are still many unexplained things in first game that can take to the 2nd one, and will make it the much more bigger game, rather than make twisted game event and the controversial Ellie's love story.
This will surely become a lesson hard learnt for game studio in making successor for success game in the future.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I absolutely loved The Last of Us. I think it's one of my favorite games. The Last of Us Part II however is something different entirely.

At first I thought, "Why are so many people complaining about this game, it's great!", and it was, for the first hours. Then it kept going, and going, almost without purpose. Then when I thought I was going to see a climactic ending where maybe Abby was going to explain the reasons why she did what she did. Maybe, just maybe even do a little gameplay part with Abby. That little gameplay-part with Abby lasted another 12 hours. 12 hours of the game seemingly wanting to do little else than to show that Abby is a person too and that she's not all that bad and that she does have reasons for travelling the entire country to murder Joel.

I mean, in the end, it did kind of work. I liked Abby at the end more than in the beginning, but did it have to last THAT long? The story with Abby is interesting and such but there just seemingly wasn't any goal. The goal was only to get to place A, then get to place B, then to place C and so forth.
I don't get what Abby's drive was, I don't get why Abby suddenly doesn't mind turning against her own people AND not minding to kill anyone that the game so desperately tried to tell you she liked and cared for so much, in the beginning for two people she just met. Suddenly she cares so much for those people even though it puts her and her friends in danger. In the first The Last of Us it was so logical since Joel didn't have anyone else and since Ellie reminded him so much about his daughter but with Abby, why did she care so much about Lev?

To be honest, I wouldn't really mind that much if only it looked like the game was trying to tell something and not just look like it was making up a story on the spot. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that the game just seems way to long for as little as it ends up saying. The first The Last of Us I played through 4 or 5 times, it's also easy to play all over since it isn't that long, about half as long as The Last of Us Part II. And that always seemed worth it, for the experience, for the story, for the characters, kind of like re-watching a movie if you, like me, happen to also like doing. That's just not as inviting as The Last of Us Part II because of the length and the little story it has in those 26 or so hours I first put into it.

Then, obviously there's also a lot good about the game. The gameplay has improved tremendously. I like the weapons in Part II way more than in the first one. I also loved upgrading and that you have to get creative and adapt to what's happening, more so than the first one. Part II has more interesting environments, I think, and also lots more and different kinds of enemies, humans and infected alike. Like the Stalkers, which I'm sure everyone hates, not even necessarily in a bad way. Say what you want but the fact that there are so many different kinds of enemies, each requiring a different approach, makes it interesting. Especially when the game puts different kinds of infected, or even humans and infected, together.

The game looks amazing too! Even better than The Last of Us. Environments are more lush and often times more vast than The Last of Us. Naughty Dog also clearly tried to make The Last of Us Part II's environments at least, much less linear. Part II feels much more real because of the overgrowing plants everywhere and that the path you should take isn't always as obvious as The Last of Us. Further, nothing can compare to the sunny Santa Barbara at the end when you've been playing in dark, grey alleyways for a long time before that. Or The Farm before Santa Barbara, which was also a nice change of scenery, and pace too.

Without judging the ending, which in the end, I did kind of like. I would much rather play The Last of Us Part III with only a single character, Ellie preferably of course. And a The Last of Us III we will get guessing by how indefinite, and somewhat disheartening Ellie's ending was. I might even call it cruel how Naughty Dog left Ellie after getting us to like her so much after two games.

That leaves us with my score, 6/10. Maybe the game deserves even slightly more, so make that a seven if you wish. But it doesn't deserve any less. Even though I don't always agree to how the story was tackled and the messages it's trying to send, the gameplay and aesthetics of The Last of Us Part II make up for much of it. Definitely since I would still recommend everyone to try the game for themselves.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is full of rubbish. I'm a fan of the first part. The first part is simply a masterpiece. The second part is simply impossible to play. I'm sorry I bought the Collector's Edition. If in the levels for Ellie you get at least some pleasure from the game (due to the storyline with Dina and love for Ellie since Part 1), then the levels with Abby are just torture. I remember that I was just waiting for this horror to end and the game would return me to Ellie. The ending is ... You know, I never cried like that from disappointment. This game is dead for me. Now I can't even play the first part of the game. My opinion is Ellie should stay with Dinah, Abby should be in the grave. The graphics in the game are amazing, so I bet 1 out of 10 I do not recommend buying Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fantastic gameplay. The new standard for both accessibility options and visual detail. The animations and sound design are the best I've ever seen in the game, upgrading guns is exciting just to see all the clicking and clacking of the weapons in detail under the harsh workshop lamp. Some brilliant story moments and character-building near the start of the game. Then the narrative and gameplay pacing begins to fall apart as you get past Ellie's Day 1.

Her flashbacks with Joel are lovely and give the game a *very* needed sense of levity. Even though dramatic moments still come up within them, they don't feel as soul-crushingly as hopeless as the time spent in Seattle. Up until the end of Ellie's Day 3, I felt the game had its problems but I was enjoying it. Then you start as Abby and it's just not executed well.

I don't mind the idea of playing as Abby but forcing you to play through the previous 15 hours from Abby's perspective *without warning* with characters you either hate or don't care about did not keep me engaged at all. The important part to take note is that it really is a surprise, I would've been more likely to enjoy and be open to Abby's sections of the game if you swapped off between characters at the end of each day. But forcing you to play as Abby at the emotional climax of Ellie's journey feels unnecessarily antagonistic, like the switch is there to spite the player when they're finally ready for a conclusion. There's a lot of hypothetical changes you can throw out there but there's a lot of issues I have with Abby's days would require more than just reorganising how you play them. Long story short I did grow to sympathise with Abby but I never liked her, or her friends for that matter.

I don't think the story is bad but I'd argue the way it's told certainly is. Abby definitely has the most varied level-design: the spooky forest clearing where you meet Yara and Lev, and the Island sequence stand out. And I really enjoyed Ellie's final level through Santa Barbara; it provides a really nice change of aesthetic to the grey wind and rain of Seattle, contains interesting encounters and *most importantly* is the most well-paced level in my opinion.

I ended up finding the ending quite provocative but did find it to be *too* hopeless. The final flashbacks to Joel had me weeping like a little baby, 10 out of 10 moments for me. But the 23 hours previous have a bigger impact on my enjoyment of the game than the sparse moments of great story-telling between characters I *do* care about.

It's a tricky one to discuss and video-essayists have made much more in-depth videos than anything you'll see in a Metacritic user review. It's a game I'm glad I played and would like to play again because I do love the gameplay so much (replaying encounters is a god-send for me), but after getting to the start of Ellie's Day 2 on a second playthrough I don't think I can bring myself to be engaged with the story now that I know what comes afterwards.

With the game's erratic quality I can see people giving this game anywhere from a 4 to an 8, but I can not understand how someone could give this game a 10 or a 0, because even if you hate it there are moments likely to hit you in a way no game ever has. Critics seem to think it is perfect. I think professionals in the industry like to think that games have as much artistic credence as books and movies and so if a game tries something different or controversial then it must be a well-executed subversion of story-telling and a "new paragon of narrative design". When, in fact, maybe it was just something that *did* try hard but didn't quite hit the mark. Although I very strongly suspect if this game came from any other studio than Naughty Dog those review scores wouldn't be quite as high.

My biggest issue with the story is that the characters get thrown around and are inconsistent. At one point a character would be a significant part of the story, but then be completely forgotten about for pretty much the rest of the game. Character relationships feel unrealistic considering we would just meet certain characters and immediately the characters of the story would care or simply trust each other all of the sudden. This is a consistent problem throughout the entire game. The romantic relationships in the game feel unrealistic. An example of this is during the beginning of the game where the player meets Dina for the first time. We literally go from having a snowball fight, to killing zombies, to smoking weed and having sex. Ellie and Dina literally hooked up the night before, and now all the sudden they have this complexed romantic relationship? Not even the notes in Ellie’s journal reveals any chemistry between the two. They were simply friends, but I digress. Honestly though if your gonna have complexed character relationships show it in gameplay or cutscenes including flashbacks. Don’t just write some lazy expedition in notes and don’t assume that the player assumes the characters have had previous chemistry. The game also has way to much plot armor. Basically this story’s events and why certain characters live or die can be summed up as a giant coincidence. The biggest example of this in my opinion is when Ellie is captured by the WLF for the first time during her revenge quest. She’s tied up by a WLF member who then holds knife to her neck. Another WLF member intervenes, that person then try’s to kill Ellie, the previous WLF member intervenes Saying they should interrogate Her instead, the other character insists that they kill Ellie, they then put a gun to her head to kill her, Dina shows up killing one of the enemy’s through the skylight, she gets shot down by the still living WLF member hitting the ground hard and temporary disabling her, instead of shooting Dina the WLF member decides to strangle her, Ellie then picks up a piece of glass from the broken skylight to cut her restraints, She then stabs and kills the WLF member Saving herself and Dina. I don’t mind a little plot armor, but there’s so much of it in this game that it breaks the immersion. The set pieces are cool at least. The last level of the game (all though fun to play) felt extremely rushed story wise. We are literally introduced to a new faction called the “Ratlers” and given no time to develop them. It honestly feels like the last part was just padding. The game is very long in general literally jumping back in time when the story is about to reach its peak and seemingly concluded to tell what I feel is a completely unrelated story from the previous. I’m referring to Abbys story. We go from a revenge quest to avenge Joel as Ellie, to saving the people from the enemy faction “Seraphites” Because they had resented the faction, to building a relationship with said people (Mainly Lev) causing a faction war between The WLF and the Seraphites as Abby. Both of which are 10 hours long. You can literally make two games out of this, but I digress. Finally we have reached the end and to be honest it sucked. Not only because Abby lived, but because Ellie never found out why Abby kille Joel. We the player know, but Ellie doesn’t. So I’m sitting there thinking why on earth did Ellie not kill Abby. It felt like the developers forgot or overlooked that Ellie doesn’t know What Abbys intentions were and that all she knows is that Abby killed Joel and that she was going to kill her. So basically Ellie traveled for months, wiped out nearly two factions worth of people single handily, only to let the Person who killed Joel (who was basically a dad to Ellie) live? I don’t buy it. Overall the gameplay was really fun, but I just could get into the story. Expand

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
