It is a deep story about emotional trauma and the deadly cycle of vengeance that will continue endlessly until someone chooses to rise above it and move on. The graphics get a nice boost from the first game, the game world is much more explorable, and full of Easter eggs to other naughty dog IPs. All of the characters are like able. Including Abby and her friends. I hate what they did, but I did enjoy my time with them. The only thing that I really did not like, and will certainly be a turn off for some people,is that Alice, a good girl German Shepard, is unavoidably killed by the player. Expand

I’ll just say, the game has a lot going on, and in many way it’s really hard to take in everything that happens. First off, Joel deserved to die. I hate to say it, but it's the truth. Joel not only brutally murdered Abby's only parent but also ruined any chance of the world returning to normal. One death could have saved millions. I understand the anger after Joel died, I was angry too. I sobbed. But after playing as Abby for numerous hours, I began to understand what Naughty Dog was trying to tell us. Abby got the same kind of sick revenge that Ellie spends the entire game doing. And in the end, Ellie has to deal with what her greed has brought her. This is not a cheery game, I don't understand why people expected it to be that. Why would Naughty Dog give you exactly what we expected? Every moment of this game was another suprise, and I loved it. This game is in no way predictable.

And to everyone who has an issue with Ellie's sexuality, keep it to yourself. I know it may be a suprise lesbians exist, but you'll have to deal with it. Anyways, why are you suprised? If you played the extra for tlou1, you would have already known Ellie was a lesbian. I personally loved this game. I would recommend it to anyone who loved tlou1. Most of the bad reviews are from those who 1) have not finished the game, 2) cant deal with Ellie being a lesbian, or 3) are die-hard fans of Joel. This game is brutal. But tough it out, you'll love it. Trust me, I had my doubts. I stuck through it though, and I'm so glad I did.

The work of art behind the story and gameplay it's incredible in The Last Of Us 2, the scenario are curated in every single details and it feels open, you never have the feeling of being in a tunnel, but more like you traveling in this post apocalyptic world.
You can feel everything that the protagonist feels during the events of the game with the animation and acting, you can fell a person in front of you and not just a character.

I never felt this while playing in a game.
Yeah, it isn't perfect like art is; some times the arms of the character stretch strangely for get an object behind you. But theres ****ty game like Skyrim and Fallout that gets ridiculous score with bug that make the game unplayable, and this one, that doesn't have nothing like that, it's treated like it's the worst game ever.

Buy this game if you can, look at the hand of Ellie during fights, look at the faces of your enemies and hear their scream of pain when they found someone of them dead on the floor; it feels real and this is never happen before in a game.

Great game. If you loved the first game, and hate this game, you should really take a look and think why. The main reasons many are upset, is the game doesn't go how they want, and you play women who do not quite match society norms. People who have reviewed the game who did not even play it through, especially those who did not play it at all have been unfair to it, and their reviews should be removed.

Maybe you just didn't like it for valid reasons, but that's the minority from what I've seen.

If you played it all and did not like it, you are entitled to your opinion, but those who have, and loved the first game, should consider that they may be taking a suck because people die instead of always magically surviving in a horrible harsh world, or just intolerant, sexist, and/or a keyboard warrior. The little details in this game make it great. They took some big risks in having you play a character who is a somewhat masculine woman. Good on Naughty Dog for challenging society norms. Things like armpit stubble on one of the female characters (who would actually be shaving regularly in this world?). One argument people use is "the game is too violent". Again, that is valid if you didn't play or like the first one. If you did, that's a horrible argument, it's very similar to the first game, where Joel murders tons of people, including innocent firefly's and essentially dooms the world for one girl. He just committed a planet to doom! I loved Joel but that is about the worst crime you could commit! The revenge against him was valid, but the cycle continued until both Abby and Ellie ended it. I will admit, there are times I did not like playing Abby. She is my enemy of course ! But you play on knowing there is a reason.

Just finished the game last night, and it was good, satisfying, and makes you think, just like the first game. Leaves the door open for more. Hope they do a part 3 once the keyboard warriors simmer down. They could wrap it up with a mission to find someone who could carry on the firefly work and make a cure, perhaps work it in that Abby's survival leads to finding this person, and cure due to Ellie's act of mercy (returning the favor from Abby).

I gave the first game 10/10, I give this one 9/10. I did miss Joel too, but as the game goes on, you realize he deserved what he got. If you put yourself in Abby's shoes, Ellie would have done the same thing as her!

    Slam dunk for Naughty Dog!

I think the hate this game gets alone proves the point that Naughty Dog knows how to toy with our emotions. I honestly don’t understand people giving this anything below 7 or what standard they hold for their games, and I will try to tell (without spoiling) why I think this is a masterpiece and a 10/10.

I think the hate this game gets alone proves the point that Naughty Dog knows how to toy with our emotions. I honestly don’t understand people giving this anything below 7 or what standard they hold for their games, and I will try to tell (without spoiling) why I think this is a masterpiece and a 10/10.

TLOU2 is a deserving sequel to one of the best games ever (in my opinion). The story follows the consequences of the first game in a very natural sense thats true to the world. The vicious nature is emphasized as we see that years of terrible actions actually have consequence. When we meet Joel and Ellie, they have settled for a peaceful life in Jackson and been living in this community for 4 years. They have both softened up, and abondened the murderous and evil ways from the first game which has dulled their senses and sets up the story of this game.

The gameplay is an absolute masterpiece if you love toying with AI, stealth-gameplay or appreciate light survival horror. The enemy design is varied and their tactics are diverse. The ways enemies hunt you down and talk to each other, makes you think quickly and improvise like no game I have played before. This is the good old days where a headshot actually is a headshot and your guns don’t need the right RPG-stats to finish the kill. Weapons and crafting works pretty much the same as the prior game, but everything packs a heftier punch than it used to. My jaw dropped the first time I saw what a well-placed trapmine could achieve in gore-terms alone.

The story isn’t an sprawling-across-the-country-adventure like the first, but I always felt like TLOU2 needed to do something different to engage, and that ND had to reinvent what made the first game click. After a hefty prologue, you set out to make your enemies pay, and after this the story has you in the palm of it’s hand. I will say that I also felt like the first half of the game has some severe pacing-issues, but with the exceptional story that follows and with the incredible replay-value the game has, this doesn’t feel like a problem by the time the credits roll. The story is packed with exceptional cutscenes that are of the haunting, heartwarming or cry your heart out-kind. They are incredibly acted and voiced, the animation is better than anything I’ve ever seen (at least in a game) and the score is more diverse this time provoking new emotions that you did not feel in the last game. Symbolism are both of the on the nose-kind, but I felt that there are even more of the subtle kind telling even more stories for those who are interested in really diving into this. Every scene feels mirrored at some point, and especially if you decide to play the game again, you will pick up on so much storytelling that flew you by the first time. I’ve seen alot of people complain about the game, but I feel like if you hate the ending, you are missing the point - and no it is not «revenge is bad», though this of course also is a theme of the game.

I think the game teaches alot about empathy and even more about the desperation of finding your place and your meaning in a meaningless world. For some it seems like it doesn’t work at all, but for me the ending hit like a ton of bricks.

I have seen alot about the diverse cast being some kind of «political agenda», but I don’t feel this. I just think they wanted diversity in characters, and in a fictional world this works with me and I think it’s cool to see those who seldom are represented in main-stream media be jampacked in this game.

It is annoying that I care so much about what other fans feel, but I am really frustrated by the backlash of this game. I think many will enjoy it if they manage to look past the massive hate from the community and other gamers before they are done. Since the story touches oh so much on what hate does to humans, I think many fans reactions is quite ironic, but thats just the way it is I guess.

All in all I think TLOU2 delivers a top quality game with a fantastic story, fun and intense gameplay and alot more replay value than the first one. It made me feel feelings I’ve never felt in a game and made me go into situations I were very uncomfortable with. As I stated, I feel like the first half is a bit long, but by the time you reach the end, it doesn’t matter to me because of the rest of the game.

If I managed to get ONE SINGLE person to play this, I am happy. I really love this game and think it is a masterpiece. Looking forward to talk about it in years to come :)

PS - I don’t think anyone who hates the game are transphobic or «doesn’t understand» or anything, but I would like to understand why it is so important to all of them to actively spread so much hate on the internet and come with threats of violence. That seems really unnecessary. Let’s discuss! Love every opinion as long as they are non-threatening :)

The last of us Part II.

The thing I've seen most from critics who give this a 1/10 is that a certain character dies too early, but that doesn't even register in the overall picture of what this game has to offer and shows that these people were either too shook to understand the story that follows, or never bothered to play it in the first place. And no, watching your favorite streamer play through TLOU2 is NOT a substitute for doing it yourself, you weirdo.

There were so many moments in the game where I was caught off guard or surprised by some action, in many cases shouting out loud or jerking back in my seat startled. I’ve never played a game that makes me feel this involved and part of the story.

This game is a sequel, the story had to do something drastic to not be too repetitive with the first game. I initially was not thrilled when I reached the “moment” in the game which I think the negative reviews are focused on, but as the game went on the more I enjoyed the story and the creative direction that the developer and game designers took. The game is definitely worth the purchase and play through. I intend to play through it again to find anything I missed the first time.

If there was one thing that could have been better is the gameplay controls, reloading with R2 is unusual. I usually reload guns with square. I also got tired of the infected encounters and the AI was not very smart. You could hide in stealth mode and 6 NPC’s would see dead bodies and walk right up to the same spot for an easy kill. I also don’t think it was smart for NPC’s to announce their moves “let’s push up, rush her, etc).

We can identify with the agenda simply because we can see ourselves making the same choices. In a world like The Last of Us there are no protagonists. As humans we can be flawed, insensitive, and selfish. Everything is perspective. Blind hatred and clouded judgment left Ellie with nothing; her trail of bodies didn’t break Joel back. As a result of her selfishness, she lost Dina too. She needed to forgive Joel. People had an agenda. They wanted the same game again. I’m sorry to disappoint. I loved this game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Here's why, to me, this game is a masterpiece and even better than the first part in some ways :
First thing first, people got overcarried by the hate coming from the leaks, which were out of context. Now that the game is out and we have proper context to look into it all, it's obvious the writers knew perfectly what they were doing all along and it feels like a really well planned story. But of course some of those youtubers/influencers/whatever are just looking for easy views and bucks, and right now it means hating the game and follow what started with the leaks. You can disagree with the story of course, but not to the extent of sending death threats to the writers, or the actors. That's just wrong and childish, period. No one back then had proper context to judge the game.
Firstly, to me, the game honors Ellie and Joel bonds deeply : you can feel Joel's presence all the way during the first half of the game, and seeing how Ellie does take care of a whole militia brings back memories of how Joel would have done it. She has the same moves. She has the same way (and of course, you do as a player) of wiping enemies. At one point during the game Dina says to Ellie "where did you learn how to do that ?" and she answers "Joel taught me". This is a testimony of how Joel affected Ellie, and yourself as a player. The flashbacks are here to remind you constantly of that special bond. It culminates when Ellie tries to do the same map trick Joel taught her, but it backfires on her, because she's not him. And Ellie's own failures end up in killing a pregnant woman. That's why she hates Abby so much (who seems to be successful and invicible to Ellie at that point of the game - but of course she isn't given how she loses everything and how she ends up enslaved).
Secondly, people can't stand the fact Joel died. But Joel made that terrible choice at the end of the first game of saving Ellie at all costs. He put this on himself. And he then got soft because of the safety provided by Jacksonville and because of the redemption he found with having Ellie. You can feel it all the way during the prologue. They ALL got careless, forgetting how dangerous the world can be. There are tons of details for it : the reports on how many infected they killed during patrols (filled with smileys and jokes, even Joels after a while), the way they bring people in Jacksonville, Joels house (when you visit it, you can feel the guy has turned soft because he has Ellie in his life and he found redemption : he has an artistic soul again, given how much time he's been spending carving wood and playing guitar - things that felt meaningless to him in the first part - I couldn't believe Joel has such a sensitive soul inside given how he had to hide it all after what happened to his daughter and what he had to do to survive during those 20 years. But of course he had to switch off that survivor mentality for it).
Now about Abby (who also plays as a Moby Dick for Ellie until the end). First, the thing her dad says when he tells her he would do just as Joel to save her even if her death would prevent humanity for getting a cure was a way to tell her we all have flaws, and so does she as she was blinded by hate for Joel. Then, the game takes a huge turn when Lev and Yara come around, it takes a whole different step because ultimately, as she says, she chooses their side over the Wolves or the Scars. That's the defining moment (on the island) when I started really caring about Abby. What matters most is the individuals, not the group logic and systemic way of dealing with things (rings any bells to how people flamed this game despite having played it or explored it enough ?). You have to look into individuals and not judge them depending on which group they're a part of (and btw, Ellie comes to the same conclusion when she writes in her diary while in Santa Barbara : "Fireflies, Scars, Wolves... f*** them all" ; she's on the same mental process as Abby, Abby just being ahead a bit). That's a wonderful character development and morale. And btw : Abby DOES show remorse and is tortured by what she did. The nightmares didn't go away with Joel's death. And Laura Bailey plays it perfectly when she kills Joel : she has seconds of hesitation and you can feel her vulnerability. Of course she's too consumed by it to show it directly. And I like to think Yara and Lev is a way for her to find purpose again and to redeem for what she did.
The game doesn't give you anything easy and you actually have to dig deep into it to get your answers. You have to read diary logs, you have to listen to all of the conversations, you have to look into the environment to get it all. It doesn't treat you like a 5 years old, spoonfeeding you easy answers to make you feel better. I've never seen a game this detailed and well carved. I've never seen a game making me think over and over things, and to think about how we react as human beings.

Characters experience challenging developmental arcs and experience a seemingly never ending number of devastating events along the way to a conclusion that challenges the player to establish new expectations for the stories capable of being tackled in this medium. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I went in blind, never watched the spoilers, didn't stayed on the internet much before it's release, and as soon as I finished it I wanted to talk about it so badly, so naturally, I went to Reddit and oh my god I couldn't believe what the heck happened because personally I really loved the game and everyone seemed to hate it.

Now one week later, as more people actually played (or watched walkthroughs on youtube) the game, I noticed more and more positive feedback as each day passed, predominately on the PS4 sub and the main TLOU one, also the Metacritic score raised up to 5.0, from a 3.2, leading me to believe that the initial reaction was mostly composed of online troll with nothing better to do. That's not to say that there aren't persons who genuinely don't like the game, but usually, they came in as more civil and respectful to other's opinions.

From a technical point of view for me this game is a marvel, from graphics and sound design to incredible attention to details it's just perfect. I didn't enjoy so much the gameplay of a game in a long time, HZD was the last game I think to leave me in a state of "wow this **** is so fun". Regarding performance, I don't understand how they did it but the game runs even smoother than Uncharted 4 for me, as with that game I witnessed a few nasty fps drops a couple of times, here I didn't encounter any sequences with noticeable frame rates drops. I play on a ps4 slim from 2017.

With that said I really loved the story as well, the (big spoilers ahead) midway switch to Abby clicked with me, eventually, I ended up liking her, by the final chapters I was seriously hoping Ellie won't kill her, not only because I liked Abby and Lev as characters, but because it would mean the definitive downfall of our protagonist in my opinion. The sudden pop of Joel's memory as she was suffocating Abby to death was a representation of how Ellie acknowledged that she was using revenge as a coping mechanism to escape guilt because she didn't make amends with Joel before he died, killing Abby wouldn't fix her issues on the long run. And I think at that moment came some great character development for Ellie, as it takes great willpower to control your rage and spare the murderer of your beloved in an attempt to move forward and heal. So for me, the ending was actually bittersweet, touched by a note of hope, showing us that the main theme was actually forgiveness. Maybe it hit me differently because I'm trying to leave aside my toxic "solutions" and attitude towards some personal issues I have

All in all, this is a 10/10 for me, the pacing at times could have been better, but other than that it's a really good game. Definitely a must have at least when it's on sale.

A brilliant companion piece to the first classic to bring the story full circle.
As for the negative reviews giving 1 star. Let's dissect that for a minute. These reviews are saying this game, it's graphics, gameplay and story are one of the worst games ever made? It's laughable so you can happily ignore those reviews. They're from trolls who haven't even played the game because let's face it, why would someone spend 30 hours of their life playing a game they thought was one of the worst ever made.
This game's story, among its many themes, is about choices and their consequences. Naughty Dog has made a game that forces you to play through the consequences of those choices which carry over from the first game and they're confronting. It just takes a little emotional intelligence, emotional maturity and empathy to appreciate the wrenching experience they've achieved in this game. Unfortunately trolls don't have those traits and are doomed to spiral down a path of hate that will only damage themselves. Ironically, if they played the game, they just might learn that.

Gameplay and graphics had serious upgrades from the first game, encounters felt more fluid with more options to interact and ways to navigate situations, and the infected were less of a set-piece and actually felt like a part of the game's world. Graphics wise, as demonstrated by trailers, this game looks beautiful.

    *Spoiler Alert*

Story wise, part 1, featuring Ellie, is enjoyable and her flashbacks with Joel and other people are sad and interesting to watch. Do pacing issues exist? Yeah, 100%, but for me, I don't think it took away from the game itself. Part 2, featuring Abby, was interesting. I didn't feel motivated to play the game for a few hours, but eventually, I started to dig into her story and enjoy it. I would say the second half of the Abby portion is more intriguing than the first half.

The game is a tale of revenge. Ellie seeks out the bad guy(girl) in here eyes which is Abby, to get revenge for killing papa Joel. Tommy is down to help, but decides to leave and do it himself, so you’re trying to find him and Abby and deal with things. Things went for a turn about halfway through the game when you get to see things from Abby’s eyes. Getting to see her story and WHY she sought out Joel in the first place. Seeing her relationships before things took a turn for the worse. All in all it ended fairly well, and still had me ready eyed when she picked up the guitar and thought of Joel one last time before leaving it behind. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So I had heard a few plot point leaks prior to the release, but that did not stop my enjoyment of the game.
The Story for me was 10/10 and perhaps the most ambitious and heart-wrenching narrative in any video game that I have played. I understand that for some people some of the narrative choices made are irredeemable, but to get the most out of this game you have to be willing to empathise and forgive, just as readily as you hate the characters.

If you go into the game expecting a safe sequel for the first game this is not what you are going to get. The world naughty dog created is brutal and the story and gameplay reflect this. At the beginning of the game, the realistic violence can leave one with a sense of glee ( who doesn't find it funny blowing up a guy and watching him disappear in a cloud of mist), but after a while, after killing dogs, listening as the friends of the enemies you kill scream out their fallen comrades names you start to feel disillusioned with the character's righteousness. By the end of the game I was begging Ellie to end this revenge; no game has ever made me feel like this, not since the first the last of us.

Abby's section of the game is genuinely one of the best, once you start to accept her. There was an initial slog at the beginning of her first day, but once you get captured by the seraphites she really comes into her own, and has some of the best set pieces and gameplay moments in the whole game. The stalker fight in the forest, all of day 2 and the scouring of the seraph island were perfection.

Overall a 10/10 game, well worth the seven year wait.

If you pay attention to what's going on and don't reject it because you dislike what happens at the start with Joel's death, you'll see that the game actually does a great job of telling an unconventional and uniquely structured story that IS good. People who only took away 'revenge bad' from the ending have missed the point. It becomes clear through flashbacks from the end that Ellie hates how she treated Joel and hates that she wasted the years that she had left with him since she was never able to forgive what he did, so acted out over the course of the game to take revenge. The game is not about revenge, it's about Ellie forgiving people - Abby and Joel - and moving forward, realising that it just is not worth it. Expand

The story in part II is much different than part I. The game is a bit slower paced but has plenty of action and more jaw dropping moments than the first. Take the game slow and let the game tell its story. It is a masterpiece of a game. Not to mention the most beautiful and detailed game I’ve played to date.

This game is a 10 out of 10 and a Masterpiece. I was a hater to this game before the release and I read the spoilers but after I finished it, I think most of the people who give low ratings actually didn't play the game.

The game is incredibly emotional. Gotta appreciate all the work that has been done: the graphics, the voice, the motion capture and stuff. You will see a wonderful, well-written story, of Ellie's journey through the whole country, for revenge. That's all I can say about the plot. You really gotta check it out:)
Very touching, emotional, and impressive work. Well done, Naughty Dog!

Expand

Simply put, the greatest game ever made, as of the time of writing this review. You need to be pretty intelligent to understand it though

Finished The Last of Us Part II last night, and every criticism I've seen up to this point is an insane reach. Of course we know killing is bad, but stories are allowed to tread familiar ground, especially when they're executed as well as that.
I'm someone who's very averse to needlessly grim and violent genre works, but besides one particular maiming, there was nothing needless about it.

Fellow guitar players, prepare yourselves for a gut punch.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
