Due to its story, those who hate this game would be unfair. The best game ever. His only problem is to make Ellie look bad and make Abby look like a good girl. Expand

The story is dark, hard, and quite brutal on an emotional and physical level, with emotionally moving and tender moments. The game wisely and consistently continues the ending of the first game, further characterizes the protagonists and even takes the time to humanize and emotionalize the antagonists, so that we also cheer with them. Telling the story in different timelines gives the story more complexity and cleverly fills the gaps between part 1 and 2. The end is open in the tradition of part 1, which leaves us somewhat depressed, but as in part 1 as well with a little hope. Conclusion of the story: masterful, relentless, emotional The technical side is at least as impressive. Like "The Last of us", "The Last of us - Part II" is an unparalleled audiovisual experience, I missed the wonderfully melancholic music of the first part here, but the game is graphically and atmospherically a feast for the eyes. While you strolled through the melancholic post-apocalypse of North America from time to time in decelerated moments in the first game, you are literally overwhelmed by the thoroughly depressing atmosphere, soaked with sadness, anger and despair. The cold and dreary bluish cast, as well as the seeded colors always convey a feeling of threat, discomfort and despair. The graphics offer a cinematic experience in cutscenes and create an incredible level of realism in the game, especially in combination with the excellent motion capturing and the acting. The game sometimes offers certain moments when there is an epic visually that is not only unusual for both games, but is generally comparable to nothing that I have seen in the medium so far. Images that completely say goodbye to the melancholy in part 1 and drift off into the realm of the doomsday scene. The gameplay is basically the same as in the predecessor, of course has been expanded a bit, but is just as in part 1 excellent, exciting, stressful, clever survival action. Conclusion on the technical side: Just like part 1, this game will inspire us even in 10 years. General conclusion: "The Last of us Part II" is an unquestionable masterpiece at every level, on which one can evaluate a game. The successor shows once again the greatest strength of the series, the story-telling, while the story in part 1 was quite simple, which was offset by the excellent story-telling, the story could not be more complex, complex and emotional. We are always offered exciting gameplay, supported by overwhelming graphics, great sound, etc. Of course, the story provides material for discussion, but it will be continued consistently and logically with regard to the end of part 1. I think that's what it means that every decision has consequences and that even when the world ends, we are still human beings and everyone has a story, emotions, fears, hopes and is ready to fight for what is important to him. Ellie and Abby are only 2 sides of the same coin. Still, despite all the harshness, brutality, and mercilessness, the game does something that other games just don't. It takes time for calm, tender, soulful moments, moments that seem trivial, dialogues, moments in which the characters are characterized and humanized. I could go on forever, but I'm just getting to the final conclusion: it's a wonderful but hard masterpiece, the story is brilliant, I can only say it's the best game I've ever played, my absolute favorite. Story wise, it was a bit too focused on the romance side of things - it's not really something that you want from a survival horror game. but I didn't really feel like it was being jammed down my throat.

I thought it was interesting though the way that you can see both sides perspective of things, that as ellie it seems as a justified act in her eyes - the only way she could live with it after certain events happened - and then seeing from abby's point of view. It touches on how people deal with traumatic events, and how a need for revenge can twist you in to something you never thought you could be. Personally I could sympathise with both sides, which I think is a sign of well written characters, like how nobody could tell who was the main character for several seasons of game of thrones. I think that the writing is not as bad as it's made out to be at all.

I don't see what all the fuss is about with abby being built like a bloke, if they made a big deal out of it during the game it would bother me, but it's literally only ever mentioned at the end of the game and that is just to describe her to someone. it's completely irrelevant practically to the storyline, other than the fact she is physically strong and it affects how you use her ingame.

Joel is old, I mean. was it really that surprising?

Gameplay wise, I think they have made a lot of very good changes compared to the first. they've given you a lot more stealth variety and tactics you can use which which personally I love. Like for instance you can dive in to tall grass, and the AI of the mobs has improved a lot in that you have more chances to escape if you mess up. Ability to craft arrows and silencers is fantastic The pipe bomb mechanics are great, in that you can bounce the bombs from the walls, giving you a very satisfying way to kill that annoying guy hiding behind a corner.

Exploding arrows! I don't think I really need to say much more there.

The melee combat is also much improved, with the game actually giving you ways to evade attacks and be more tactical about how you can kill mobs. this is particularly great if you're low on ammo and there is only 1 or 2 infected. I think you could potentially go through most of the game barely ever using guns apart from bosses. I think it's very cool how they give you that option.

The crafting and steroid/power up mechanics in the game feels much more interesting, the options didn't feel as much of a clean cut choice as in the first, and you had more options to cater the weapon to your style of play during the initial playthough, which I think is cool. For instance focusing on weapon stability if you suck at aiming like me, or just raw damage - or scopes if you see yourself as more of a sniper.

the new infected mobs are great, I think the added variety of the mutations has really added a lot to the combat and made you adjust how you approach different situations and how you save, for example, a loaded shotgun in case a pack of stalkers pop out of nowhere, or a couple of molotov's in case you get some of the big nasties. the rat king battle in particular was great, oodles of fun with a flamethrower..

overall I highly recommend this game if you liked the first, but I'd recommend going in to it with an open mind and make up your own opinions about it. It's worth the chance in my opinion.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Here I leave the reflection I had about TLOU2.

In Ellie's diary, in all the drawings she makes of Joel during the game she never drew his eyes, because the only memory that comes to mind when remembering him, is the look and the sad face he started to carry after the distance that the two started to have for Ellie having discovered what really happened in that hospital in the first game and saying that she would never be able to forgive him, despite being willing to try.

And she felt so guilty for that, of not having forgiven him in time and saying how much she loved him and how important he was to her, that she was blinded by revenge just as Abby was in killing Joel.

Before Abby met Ellie at the theater, we can see through a note that she writes in her diary, that she no longer knows why she chose to go on that journey, if she was still doing all that to avenge Joel's death or if the reason would be another (guilt)... She even hints that Joel would not support her decision to leave Jackson, as he always puts those he loves first.

And, unfortunately, Ellie had to abandon everything she had and lose all the people she loved to understand that all that cycle of hatred, violence and revenge would not lead them to anything, because regardless of what they do, even if she killed Abby, nothing would bring him back and nothing would be able to numb the pain in a way that would make it easy.

Most people hated the game because it has a bitter ending, but this is always the consequence of revenge.

We felt all the pain that the search for revenge caused for Ellie added to the feeling of mourning for Joel death.

This game is a masterpiece and shows us how much we should love and forgive those who are with us while there is still time and that is why it hurts so much and so many people hated it, because death does not announce its arrival, Joel died unexpectedly in a ridiculous way as we are all subject every day (and they mainly due to the context of an apocalypse).

Abby in search of revenge and for all her selfishness lost Owen, Mel, Danny, Yara and all of her other friends, in addition to her tribe (the wolves).

Ellie in search of Abby, also for revenge, lost Joel, Jesse, Tommy, Dina, JJ ... Some died and others left her ... But she lost what else had sentimental value to her, her ability to play guitar, the only connection she still had with Joel.

BOTH lost many important people during their journeys, who would still be alive if they had not chosen the path of hatred and selfishness.

So the phrase that defines this game is:

"Before going out for revenge, dig two pits. Revenge is sweet, but for the bee costs its life."

Another reflection, besides that revenge is not a worthwhile path to follow is that every coin has two sides and playing with Abby throughout the other half of the game we can understand this and understand her motivations so that she felt such a need to get revenge.

We went into her history and we can understand everything that Joel took from her, because he was also selfish in that hospital to make a real slaughter leaving a huge trail of blood and killing innocent people in horrible ways just to save Ellie.

In this game there are no dichotomies, as we see that each character is the hero of their own story, but if we analyze it broadly, there is no right and wrong, just like every war there are no villains, only two sides fighting for what they think the truth is.

Anyway, The Last Of Us 2 is an incredible game that brings us endless reflections and it's okay not to like it, but all those who are giving it free hate comments, are dumb people who didn't take even a second of their lives to stop and reflect on history and in the game proposal!

This game, in its proposal, was created to be realistic, not only in graphics and gameplay, but in content and history. And life rarely has happy endings. Life is also about loss, pain, hate... not just "lived happy ever after"... TLOU2 is there to make us feel this whole roller coaster of feelings... That's why it's amazing, because it's very difficult for a game, with fictional characters, to make you feel something in a personal way as I felt. That's why he is incredible. For the ability to touch people.

Absolute beast of a game. Love it totally. The beauty of the game is the way the story goes that draws the player into the exact same feeling of the characters and start to question on the notion of revenge, anger, violence and sadness. No other games I played has been able to involved such feelings and reaction. The gameplay and graphics and the whole experience is GOTY to me.

It went something like this: Death usually has no meaning, most of us won't die in any meaningful way, it comes out of nowhere and we are left desperate trying to deal with the loss of a loved one. I believe that the game making us feel this certain way is the main reason I am saying this is a masterpiece. I don't believe a game has ever invoked such a feeling ipon the players, and that is why I believe this is one of the best games ever. Expand

Part 1 was able to do it and part 2 is at least as good as part 1 in doing it (in my opinion). The plot of Part 2 is almost completely filled with sad events whats probably one cause why people are upset about the game. Especially Ellie gets confronted with these events and the end of the game gives no relieve (No Happy End). Additionally there is a second character the player gets to play that is completely new to the last of us and was never seen in part 1. But in the end the game tells a beautiful story and shows the actions of Ellie and Joel out of a completely new perspective. Expand

This game has made me feel things that no game has ever made me feel before. The story dragged me in and its emotional impact still lingers after having finished it over a week ago, what a ride.

It is however not a perfect game. In my opinion the game is a bit too long. Not because of the story, but because of the gameplay. The gameplay hasn't changed too much from the first game and while the fighting sequences (which gameplay-wise have received the biggest upgrade compared to the first game) are an absolute blast, the mechanics of finding supplies, upgrading your weapons and your character are dated and get old quite quickly, I was done with these things about halfway through the game. You will find yourself going through each room, opening each drawer, each locker to find supplies or pills. These are currencies which you spend in order to upgrade your load-out or skills or craft weapons. The skill tree doesn't make much sense and the weapon upgrades are unexciting too. Half of the time I didn't know what to upgrade and wasn't really excited to upgrade a weapon. I wish they had innovated more in these aspects of the game as that would have lifted the experience to a higher level again.

My main point of criticism out of the way, the graphics, animation and visuals are absolutely amazing and all combined are probably the best I have ever seen in a game. The sound is equally great, the music excellent. The acting and the way characters are made alive blew my mind over and over. I just cannot get over how great all these aspects of the game are.

In conclusion: While all other aspects of the game are pretty much a 10/10, for me it is somewhat lacking in gameplay which unfortunately lowers my score for the game a bit. All in all this game is a masterfully crafted piece of art and one that will be in my mind for a long time to come. I'm incredibly thankful for everyone involved to have made this game, for me it has been an unforgettable experience.

The Last of Us Part 2 justifies why it is called “part 2” instead of just “2”, since it is a direct sequel to the story of the first game. Each event of the previous one has consequences over the story, which truly makes the player think over about dilemas regarding the morality of the characters that reflects some other dilemas that we have in the real world. It is an experience that I have never seen in any other game, as unique as the first “The Last of Us” was in its time. Indeed, it is a dark game, with a heavy atmosphere (way more than part 1), that makes you have tons of contradictory emotions and experiences through your gameplay, which may be one of the reasons that some people don’t enjoy it — but that contrast is exactly what makes it so special and beautiful. Only by playing it you will get to understand what I mean, but bear in mind you have to be ready for it. And for those who do not have the opportunity to play, you can also get a good view of it by watching a full gameplay walkthrough on YouTube (I repeat, it has to be an ENTIRE walkthrough, not just the main cutscenes to get to know the plot “in general”), although some parts can be a little monotonous for those who are watching, like searching for resources (which again, contributes a lot to give the player a full experience both in part 1 and 2). In the end, Naughty Dog once again provide us with a true work of art, and despite you may or may not prefer the first game, it is inarguably great and worth playing. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a brutal and dark game. I think it would be really difficult to make a revenge movie or game that was as ambitious as this was. They totally nailed it for me. I went from loving certain characters to hating them as well as hating some to loving them, in general I could just emphasis with how hard their lives had become. It was an emotional ride that often felt overwhelming but I’m so so happy I played it. Firstly, killing Joel was obviously something they put a lot of time and thought into and it gave us a base to explore stuff that’s definitely never been looked at in this way before. Revenge led everyone in a bad situation and we see how bad it is for everyone in the life’s of those that go after it.

The game looks so brilliant and real. The music and sound design makes you feel scared, sad and lonely in an insanely beautiful way. The places you go are unique and ridiculously detailed. The acting and the characters all do such an amazing job that now that I’m done with the game I miss them. The gameplay is very similar to the first game but has been tweaked to feel more smooth and impactful than the previous game. I like that Abby, Ellie and Joel all play differently and have different skills. The ending is depressing and dark but it fits the tone of the game perfectly. We don’t always get what we want and sometimes we miss opportunities when we are blinded by rage or something that’s become an obsession. This dark story telling mixed with social issues like the LGBTQ+ issues and identity issues were done in a cool way that didn’t feel like pandering.

This game is super ambitious piece of art that has to be played to the very end to get the full scope of its gritty beauty and deep emotional message that are difficult to process for me even now. Thank you Naughty Dog for another awesome experience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. People who play Souls-Borne games are used to getting the middle finger and a "GiT GuD" when it comes to a difficulty setting. It's something of a hot topic recently (surprisingly) and it's something that people who were unable to overcome simply didn't like about the games. That being said those games are better for it and arguably could be ruined if ever implemented. TLOU2 another one of those games. There is a difficulty setting for game-play but there are no difficulty settings in this game or in real life for processing mental and emotional trauma. It seems like the majority of these reviews are from people having trouble at the latter. This is strange though because games like Hellblade and Celeste have done well on here.

Grief is a potent emotion that I would never wish on anyone. If not under control it will ravage someone, sometimes completely changing the person you thought you knew. This is something that is as hard to watch in real life as it is in this game. We saw what it turned Joel into in the first game but we never saw how. In movies you just have to watch as someone goes through this; in video-games you're in the drivers seat and you are far more exposed. This is where Naughty Dog shines and they do an immaculate job across the board. I felt the death of Joel hard, I felt Ellie's grief, I even felt Abby's grief but I didn't think I would be able to forgive her. There is one moment at the end of the game that is so easy to miss but hits so hard. As Ellie holds Abby's head under water trying to drown her she has a brief but powerful flashback. In this 2 second flashback Ellie remembers the very moment she was ready to forgive the only person besides Abby that took everything away from her. It's after this moment that Ellie realizes the is done and lets Abby go. Its not a happy ending and it was not something I would call fun, but rather fulfilling. TLOU starts as a story about curing all the zombies but changes at the very end with Joel murdering everyone in the hospital and ruining the chance of a cure. TLOU2 starts as a cliche murder revenge plot but ends up with Ellie ultimately letting everything go. In hindsight this is something we could have expected.

This is a must play game for me across the board with one caveat. Not everyone can handle losing a loved one, they may even play video-games to avoid this. If that is the case this game may not be for you. It doesn't make sense to buy a game after seeing the leaks and knowing you're not going to like it. Its the equivalent of going to a restaurant and ordering a salad even though you wanted a steak and writing a bad yelp review. It would seem there are a lot of Karens playing video-games nowadays.

It is very clearly shown around critics that people didn't like the idea of Joel dieing in this game. But in my opinion it was a reasonable thing to do, every other naughty dog game never killed of its protagonist and the protagonist friends/ allies but the killing of joel gave the game the impact it needed if for example they killed Dina like everyone thought they did (this is because of the trailers) the game wouldn't be as intresting and worthwhile to go through l. This also shows hoe Ellie lobes and cares for Joel if she didn't care about him she wouldn't of done everything she did to get revenge on Abby
Talking about Abby shes the other problem that people disliled about the game, yes i felt the same way when i had to spwmd about 1 hoirs of gameplau with her but it showed me her side of the stoey and how she feels and desires as a human. Overall the games ending is very hard to understand fully but it was the right choice to not kill of Abby and Lev. 10/10

Speaking of gameplay. Naughty Dog made an improvement in the gameplay, while Joel from TLOUS 1 was lethal at close encoenters but slow, Ellie its the opposite, the gameplay was improved making it better with the character, more agile but weak when its about close encoenters, you can go prone for get a better position, the NPC'S they really react like a person (or like they should) if some friend dies they get nervous and they'll go to the last position of his friend, to find out what it's going on...
Now speaking about the hot topic of this game... Mainly the hatred that is recieving the game its because the dirty decisión, making...(I can't give you any clue because if i do im spoiling the plot) was the begining and the damn trailer, but i can understand this decission if Naughty Dog didn't made this choice maybe we didn't sympathize with the reasons about the search of Ellie, but skiping this point... The story... Yeah it's cliche and everything you want to say but the development through Ellie it feels good, we see her growing up through the game and we can easily notice these changes and around her... If you liked the first one this game still for you, no matter what you heard it stills worth it

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I won't lie and say I'm the biggest Last of Us fan, that I 100% the game, got it early, etc. However what I will tell you is that it is a good game, the visuals and audio design are gorgeous, the developers added a much-needed coat of paint to the mechanics, it is a very solid base. However, the criticisms come with the story and characters.

I think what NaughtyDog did with the game is bold, killing one of the beloved characters and forcing the player to play as the character who killed them. I won't say I was happy with it, but I could also see that ND wanted to create the narrative that "every story has two sides" and ask that you consider the sympathy towards what Abby has gone through and how it parallel's Ellie's story. There has also been complaints that Ellie would never 'act the way she does' within the game, however, as someone who has watched a close family member die, her anger and spite are understandable and especially in such an uncut setting, it makes sense that she'd feel so strongly as to do what she does.

A lot of other reviews I've read seem to take the game too seriously as if Naughty dog promised them something and then snatched it away. It isn't like that, this game is a new chapter in an already developed story, Ellie is 20 by the end of the story, all she knows is pain and loss. This game isn't about wrapping up Ellie's story, it's showing the end of Ellie's journey and the result of what she has caused.

In my opinion, but it, I believe it is a 10/10 game; however people are right to say that this game is divisive, so I cannot guarantee you’ll form the same opinion of this game as I have. Review: The Last of us Part II is a masterpiece without saying. I believe that this game shines in many aspects, but the one aspect that I believe it shines in “and many others don’t” is the story. As much as this seems not to be the case, not only is the story a self constrained well written emotional rollercoaster, but in my opinion perfectly compliments the first game in almost every aspect, most of all seen through story. Let’s talk about the major turn off in the story first. Joel’s death, more importantly Joel’s death at the hands of Abby, a random women whom you don’t know off nor do you know her intentions until before you can even process it, has played a golf tournament whilst using Joel’s unfortunate head as the driving range. At this moment you will want to quit. I did to, at this moment you will understand the hate, until you don’t. Joel’s death was necessary in my opinion. In a revenge story you need to be ok terms with the character, and if Dina had died, well you would feel sad for Ellie, but you would feel that way yourself, but by killing Joel, in such a traumatic and realistic manner (on the basis that in the world of The Last of Us, you do not to go out like Iron Man), it makes you want revenge, not Ellie, you. Furthermore, you see and feel these effects throughout the game. When Ellie kills a pregnant lady, when Ellie looses everything, and here is where that perfect complimentary comes between part 1 and part 2. Ellie tells Sam that she’s scared of ending up alone, and she doesn’t want to loose everyone, and in part 2 that happens, but in the end. It’s her relationship with Joel that stops her from tipping over the edge, as she remembers that she forgave Joel for the fireflies lie, and so she forgives Abby. Speaking of. Playing as Abby was an amazing experience. Seeing the other side of the coin only conflicted me more into realising who here was the villain, only deepening the characters. Not only that but once agin giving part 1 a deeper meaning, being that Joel’s choice in the first game had consequences, his lie with Ellie, his wrong doing against Abby, and it all ties that together in the perfect sequel, that I believe is The Last of Us Part II Expand

    The Last Of Us II

Everyone who leaves a bad review of this game didn't get any of the themes that were presented.
Their poor ability to discern the bigger picture and the inability to connect and empathize with well written characters, left them hurt and unable to process their own feelings.

A score of a 5 and below is only merited when the game is fundamentally broken. This is game is a far far cry from any of that. It's a masterfully crafted cinematic masterpiece that you can interact with and again pushes the boundaries of the medium of video games farther into art.

Half of the morons that leaves these surface level reviews are mad about the "SJW agenda" naughty dog is "iNjEcTiNg iNtO My gAmEs" The other half couldn't get over Joel's death.

People bring up pacing a lot as their defense for hating this game while pacing a movie and pacing a game are entirely different things. They say that the game is a tired old revenge trope while all the endings and plot changes they suggest are literally the most cliched story tropes out there.

Main thing I want to say is that this game needs to be PLAYED by a critically thinking ADULT. It's an experience that needs to effect you. Without our initial connection to Joel and Ellie, it would NOT be possible to simulate trauma and put the player into Ellie shoes. Without Abby (whose gameplay parts are some of the best in all naughty dog games) We see Naughty Dog continuing on a grander theme of how in a world of brutality and survival no one can ever be completely ethically right. Joel in the eyes of many is a monster.
We don't value people when we consider them the enemy, we dehumanize people so that we can point the finger at them when things go to sh!t. The haters of this game act in the same way, blindly hating without realizing what the other side is like. They are angry over fictional characters that are being used to tell the bigger story of the world around them.

This game is amazing so don't listen to these rubes if you actually want to truly FEEL and EXPERIENCE something never before done in a video game.

I loved the first Last of Us (and all the Uncharted games), so I knew that Naughty Dog was capable of publishing excellent games with good to great character stories intertwined. I pre-ordered TLOU2 a few days before it was to be released, and vaguely heard some of the controversy for the first time, but did not seek out any spoilers...and had no idea what I was in for (and nor did I want to know). I figure people that have worked on a story for 5+ years, probably deserve to have the entire store told by THEM, not some spoilsport tw*t on the internet...

So I avoided all spoilers until the game was preloaded on my PS4 Pro...and spent the next 5 evenings playing it completely through...AND...I actually played this game through to the very ending credits before I decided how I felt about it all...

I'm not sure if this review will resonate with the seemingly binary extremists that appear to comprise most the the "users" on this site...but for those of you that prefer to think beyond the hate-spasms of pre-pubescent emotionally crippled plebs...read on.

Before I react to the story which seems to dominate 90% of the reasoning behind most of these reviews, I do want to talk about the game mechanics and design. For me, a
AAA game's mechanics, interface, graphics and sound design are worth about 6 points out of the 10. And I have to give Naughty Dog 6 points here. The graphics, world design, music, atmospheric sound...all were just FLAWLESS. I thought the game mechanics and controls were near flawless...I rarely felt like the controls were unfair or caused me to lose a fight. I really enjoyed always worrying about not quite having enough materials...and it really encouraged me to look through everything in every corner for the extra alcohol or extra bullet. I enjoyed how running low or empty on one weapon's ammo meant I just had to change up my playstyle completely...it forced me to think laterally and out of the box and really made the survival much more tense. The enemy AI was scary (especially on the hardest level), but the companion AI was sometimes lame...I wish companions were more realistically visible to enemies and/or stayed out of sight so it didn't break immersion when enemies couldn't see them standing in front of them. I also wish the puzzles were a bit more thought-provoking and challenging. Overall, this game world looked and felt great!

    Now for the story...
As a fan of most post-apocalyptic stories, I think it's crazy that many of the dissenting fans of Part 2 somehow believed that their beloved characters were all going to live in the sequel. Have we learned nothing? The cordyceps infected world is a nasty one...rife with destruction, death, violence, and misery. Did we somehow think that a GAME set in a world where nearly everyone has either been killed, turned into mushroom monsters, or become part of a nihilistic militaristic cult...was going to feature Joel and Ellie dancing through sunshine soaked fields singing Kumbaya? Jesus, that's dumb.

The original game came out what, 7 years ago?...that means fans of the original are supposed to have MATURED SEVEN FREAKING YEARS...and somehow, some of these so called fans of the original game have, because one of their VIDEO GAME characters got killed...have debased themselves to sending hateful, misogynistic, anti-semitic, death threats to freaking VOICE ACTORS, as well as story directors and video game developers? OMG.

It's a "zombie" game set in a fictitious world for god's sake! CHARACTERS, which aren't real in case you forgot, are gonna die. It creates drama, which apparently you guys all love! I liked Joel as much as anyone, but come on...he's no angel! Maybe you remember the first game...in which JOEL and Ellie slaughtered their way all the way to Salt Lake City, literally leaving a trail of their murder victims behind them. Yes, I still liked their characters...but let's call a spade a spade...they killed a ton of people...ultimately for NO REASON. They killed sons and brothers and husbands and yes...even dads.

Killing people has consequences no matter how good your intentions or how "justified" your revenge may seem. And as much as I didn't like Abby at first, being forced to play as her was bold...and for ME...as an emotionally mature adult, was truly moving. I went from not liking Abby at all, to practically crying in the end, for BOTH Abby and Ellie...having lived through both their pain and having seen how all their hate and anger only led to the death of even more people they loved. I cried, and I cheered when Ellie finally understood (just as Abby had with Lev's help earlier)...the only way forward is to to let go. I'm a 40 year old man, and the ending made me cry. Not all stories can give us what we want! That's not life! Sometimes we get what we need...

Let’s start off with this: anyone who saw the leaks and formed an opinion of the game based primarily on that content should NOT be listened to when it comes to rating this game. People do not understand where Druckmann took the story because they were stuck in TLOU 1. But before I get into the why’s and how’s of this game, let’s talk about gameplay.

    GAMEPLAY
You will have anxiety attacks. The combat mechanics and refined and impactful. Your ammo runs out fast, the AI is smart, the environments are open-ended enough for ballsy trigger-fingers or sneaky ninjas. The infected are menacing, with a touch more humanity than the previous game. You really do have to think before you act. There are insane action scenes as well as soft, well-paced moments of carefully crafted exposition. GRAPHICS
    It’s Naughty Dog. CHARACTERS
This is where the game shined to me. Every character is three dimensional. Who is bad? Who is good? You can’t tell. That is the point. In the context of this tired, fungus-ridden post-apocalypse, there is no good and evil; there is people and the extent they’ll go to survive and protect. Ellie progresses through the story losing her humanity and becoming more like, you guessed it, Joel. Abby is a misunderstood victim: Joel took everything from her. The characters all put in what they need to, but they don’t necessarily get a “fair” send-off. And guess what: they shouldn’t. This world is not fair. NARRATIVE
This is the big one. The story is meant for people who understand the CONTEXT. The story is NOT meant for people who want a hero-based plot. Joel isn’t a hero. Ellie isn’t innocent. People were angry because Joel died the way he did. But they fail to realize that you as the player did the exact same things to others in the first game as they were done to Joel in this one. The idea is that even though Joel was presented as the GOOD GUY to us, that doesn’t make him the hero.

The story is meant to show the player one thing: perspective. This is why you WATCH Abby kill Joel, and THEN play through her flashback. It is meant to challenge you. Apparently, we as gamers have not evolved past the “shoot and run” mentality of video games. Apparently, few of us can understand Naughty Dog’s vision. If you are thinking about getting this game, or if you are unsure of what to think now that you’ve reached the credits, look at it this way: there is absolutely nothing that this world owes to you. Do not play this game if all you can fathom in video games is a black and white hero story. This is meant to question your belief, it is meant to make you uncomfortable.

I loved the game in general amazing graphics and good game play mechanics, I didn't like Abby and still don't like her but I understood her story and how Naughty Dog tried to make me feel some type of way for her but that didn't work for me but probably I will in Part III. For Ellie I feel for her, she is the character I fell in love with from the 1st game and Joel's death I just can't get around that. I kinda understand for them to show Ellie as a vengeful person something bad needed to happen. But I love the game and can't wait for the next one. Expand

The reason why people are so upset with the game is due to the events that take place in the beginning. I was mad too, I was very upset. But as I continued to play I understood that this game deals with dark and gloomy themes that can be uncomfortable to its audience. Because of this, it is understandable how this sequel isn’t made for everyone and can be triggering. This review will not do the game justice so as a warning please play the game yourself before you read. I tried controlling my excitement as much as possible for the game since I didn’t want to be let down. As a fan of the first game I thought it was important to manage my expectations. I also happen to be one of the people who think the first game had a perfect ending and that game didn’t need a sequel. But after playing this game, oh am I glad they made one. Starting with the aesthetic. The graphics are probably the best I’ve ever seen in any game. I mean it’s expected though, it’s a 2020 game after all and on top of that it’s naughty dog a development team known for their amazing graphics. I also love the film grain, some people don’t even notice it but it gives the game a sort of gritty look which I like. The environments are lush and beautiful as they help give you a feel of the last of us world. And the music, Gustavo Santaolalla tops himself from the first game as the music is even better and honestly this is probably the best soundtrack in a video game and better than some movie soundtracks. I realize how much of a fanboy I’m sounding like but this game is just that good. The gameplay is great. If you like the gameplay in the first last of us, you’ll like it in here as well. It’s not pushing the boundaries of gaming or any thing but it’s perfect for the game. It gives you a feeling of intensity that many other games can’t do. And on top of that it’s smooth, fluid, and fun! There are always dozens of ways you can approach an encounter which adds to the fun and replay ability of the game. Finally let’s talk about the story. The game opens very sombrely and evokes the emotions right away. It’s important to catch up on the first game or you may not feel all of these things. The soberness fades right away as the game kills off Joel right away. People who critique this simply don’t understand what the game was trying to do. This happens to make you feel a certain way. People wanted a clean death for Joel where they feel the loss but the game does that at the end when it wraps things up. You feel an abundance of emotions including anger, confusion, and sadness. If you feel these things, then the game has done its job by putting you in Ellie’s shoes. These feelings drive the rest of the game as you seek revenge which you yourself want since they killed your beloved character. The game takes you on a roller coaster which I can’t get into it all but it’s amazing. Characters like Dina and Jesse have amazing chemistry with Ellie and they’re likeable so you care about them. The acting by the way is phenomenal, again probably the best in a video game. The game then takes a huge risk and makes you play as Abby the person who killed Joel. They make you empathize with her which you would think is an impossible task given the context. And they just pull it all off. With uncomfortable encounters like fighting Ellie as Abby, to heartbreaking scenes like the whole farm sequence. To the final death wish as you play as Ellie at the end it’s an amazing experience which may not work for some people which is okay, the game is meant to be divisive. But for me it worked. Especially the ending with her decision to let Abby go. This ties in to the heartbreaking flashbacks which are some of the best moments in the game with Joel and Ellie. Ellie finally says she would like to try and forgive Joel and just that alone gets Joel teared up, as well as me. So if she could forgive Joel for that then she could respect him and be better than him by letting Abby go. These themes of love, hate, forgiveness are some of the things that make this game great. All of these things are what makes this game great and although it is flawed like any other game, the great things are so great that they make the game perfect for me. Great job naughty dog! Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
