In the next few months to maybe years, I think players will really appreciate it. I think this game will inspire game creators to be more ambitious with their storytelling and really make it their own. They all want to sympathize only with the characters they knew from the first game instead of empathizing and learning about the newer characters. In the first game, obviously Joel made a very impactful decision to save Ellie. In doing so, he kills countless people who were really just trying to save their own loved ones. Now, years later, the children of the people he killed come back to kill him. It’s a simple ending of a story loop, an effect of the choices that Joel made. But instead of acknowledging this the viewers simply see a character they love being killed in a gruesome manner. It is a tragic end to his life, but at least now he is back with his family, where he belongs. He no longer has to live with that pain. Meanwhile, Abby has to learn how to live with having killed someone in such a brutal manner. It comes back to bite her as Ellie seeks the same revenge as her. The story is a very realistic, meaningful look at how all this death and suffering would affect people. Some choose to live in pain and seek vengeance while others choose to let go. If you can’t see the beauty and depth in that, then you just don’t understand pain. Expand

Congratulations Naughty Dog for the courage to kill one of the most beloved characters in video games and for the audacity to make us play with your killer. TLoU2 is a journey of emotions. It's the best I can say about the game. I was happy, sad, depressed, angry, pissed off, I cried a lot and finally, amazed. Ellie's journey after Joel's killer is magnificent. The dialogues, the gameplay, all the characters involved, the soundtrack, just perfect. The ending is exciting, the scene in which Ellie sees Joel when she is about to kill Abby is heartbreaking and strong at the same time because we see that in her last conversation with Joel, there is still a resentment and it was this feeling that keep her going on her journey of revenge. It is interesting to see the consequences of their thirst for revenge, perceptible to the good viewer. it's an excellent game, a wonderful and courageous story and an epic ending. The story in this is crazy, with some insane twists left and right. Throughout the game, I was feeling heartbroken, sick, depressed, and I began to question Am I on team Abby? or Am I on team Ellie? Telltales were masters at that and seeing that being integrated into Last of Us was insane. The story did, however, felt a bit disjointing at points and a bit more editing and tweaking would have helped the story a little bit more. But in the end, it's a great game and when it's all over, you'll find yourself feeling depressed after beating it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is indeed a masterpiece, it takes some heavy decisions in the story and makes you feel a range of emotions till the end.

After going through countless reviews and reaction videos, I found 3 main things gamers hated the most

    1) Joel’s death
    2) Playing as abby
    3) Abby lives

Let’s see the story from a mature perspective rather than as fanboys.

Abby is full of hate, she had only one goal to take revenge from her father's killer.

Ellie goes down the same path, she had only goal taking revenge from Joel's (father figure) killer.

The story shows you both sides of the coin, and questions you who's revenge matters? Is eye for an eye, a solution? Who is right & who is wrong?

If Ellie kills Abby, would the cycle of vengeance stop? Wouldn't Lev come behind Ellie later for killing Abby who is now like sister to him? The most important would Joel would have wanted his "Kiddo" to devote her life for vengeance?

You start seeing Joel in Abby when you play her story, you see how she kills her own people to save Lev, something that Joel does for Ellie.

What vengeance brings to Ellie? She ends up alone at the end.

She goes to Santa Barbara thinking that killing Abby would bring her peace, and just when Abby was about to die at the hands of Ellie, she remembers Joel looking at her, she understands he would never have wanted this from her.

Abby lost her father, went on a path of vengeance, all her friends died too.

Ellie lost Joel, went on a path of vengeance, lost friends, her love, her fingers too, she now can't play that guitar which Joel always wanted her to play.

If you see the story from a fanboy's perspective you will definitely not care about the deep emotions and notions the game is challenging.

The ending flashback scene will definitely tear you apart. Ellie - I'll see you around.
    Joel - Yep

It's a very rare game, we don't get games like these very often, cherish it. I hope more people give positive ratings/reviews. It hurts to see such low score for a masterpiece like this.

I seriously wish it becomes Game of the Year.

    Spoiler Free section:

Regardless of this game not being what fans wanted, It's unfair to call is a bad game. It's a strong story with complex characters and despite how depressing the game is, it doesn't make it a bad game. Naughty Dog focused on making a great game, not a good game. Great and good are not interchangeable. Bad people like Hitler and Stalin can be considered Great, but in no way are they good, in fact they are terrible. That's how this game hits, as a game that is very selective in who likes it, but overall is a great game in general.

    Spoilers:

One of the biggest problems with this games ending is that people can't really understand it well, which is understandable but before writing a negative review because your favorite character died and you didn't like the ending, maybe try to dissect it, ask why, and look for hope in the end because there definitely is some that many people missed.

Starting from the beginning, Joel sings to Ellie with an emphasis on the phrase, "If I ever were to lose you, I'd surely lose myself. Unfortunately this happens to Ellie and this whole story is about how she loses herself to try to avenge Joel's death. There is a scene right after Ellie tortured Nora when she is crying partly because of what she has done but then she tells Dina, "I don't want to lose you." This is the moment that Ellie realizes that losing Dina is a real possibility if her revenge continues.

Moving forward to the end of the game, Ellie tracts down Abby and has her drowning underwater. Instead of ending her life, she pictures Joel playing the guitar and stops (Important for later). At this point we don't know why she lets Abby live and we get even more angry at the game. Then they show that Dina and her baby left Ellie and that Ellie really did lose everything in fact, she can't even play the guitar anymore.

Finally, we know that Ellie let Abby go, not for Abby and Levi sake, but for the sake of herself. If she really went through and ended Abby's life she realizes it would no make a difference, but more importantly, Ellie would 'surely lose herself'. Showing the scene where Ellie wants to forgive Joel is moment when Ellie spared Abby and this is because Ellie wanted didn't want to give in the the violence and completely become what Joel had become, what she couldn't forgive because then how could she expect Dina to understand. This is Ellie last grasp on her once sassy sarcastic 14 year old self and she is able to stop herself. the game ends with Ellie leaving the farm and (probably) going to look for Dina and JJ now that she has a small piece of herself to give, she hopes that Dina might someday forgive her like she decided to to with Joel.

It is not a fairytale about unicorns and happiness. It is a story about loss, desperation, struggle and humanity, after all.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First thing to say: im not a native speaker of the english language, so if i make some mistakes, forgive me. now with the rate:

The game have very good graphics, and lovely designed ambients, it makes you feel lost even if you're always progressing in a tunnel, the character design is pretty good, and the great thing 'bout it is that every female character looks feminine without being a beauty stereotipe, and the mechanics are more or less the same with the previous game, even if the addition of the dodge move adds some variety on the bare hand combat,(even if makes it quite simple to figure it out and break the mechanic expecially in one on one situations) for what concern the story and the general internet rant about the excessive presence of sjw topics, i totally disagree, we knew that Ellie likes women since the Dlc of the first game, so no big deal (you cant say that it was forced in the game) and for what concern the character of Lev i found it quite well written, because the reason of his/her decision seemed to me more like a rebellion against his/her clan, than an lgbt thing: to me looked more or less like Mulan, ( and she was asian too) so if we axcept it from Disney we can axcept it also from Naughty Dog,
Now bout the ending, to me it was OBVIOUS that the game didnt want you to kill Abbie but wants you to sympathize with her traumas and the loss of her father, the game wants you to see that Abbie and Ellie are 2 faces of the same coin, the product of times of terror and atrocities, and how is simple to lose yourself and to lose the ones you love, im my opinion it was a great message to give to people.
I have some little points that i didnt liked or in my opinion could be emphatized more:
    - spend a lil more time to show the progression of the hate between Mel and Abbie (maybe with some lil flashback)
-make a playable section of some of Ellies nightmares while she 's in the farm with Dina, to let u feel the urgency of find and Kill Abbie the last time
-Avoid the Playable last boss fight or make it less long, and bring some more talkative content (im my opinion the game should have finished with them taking different boats without punchin eachother)
i really dont understand all the hate by the community, you all should buy it and enjoy.
JUST BECAUSE THE STORY DOESNT END THE WAY YOU WANTED IT DOESNT MEAN THAT THE GAME IS BAD!

This is not an easy story to endure. It’s truly heartbreaking to see these characters that you’ve grown to know so well go through such pain. That being said, I would encourage anyone who thinks this story is only about revenge to give it another try with a different lens. The way I see it, when Ellie decides to not kill Abby, she’s not forgiving Abby so much as she’s forgiving Joel. The fire and pain that fuels her rampage to kill Abby is not exactly fueled by Joel’s death, but rather the pain and conflict that comes from Joel’s decision to pull her out of the hospital. Joel is a very flawed character, and he’s certainly not a hero. If Ellie had killed Abby, she would have been just as bad as Joel was. She loves Joel, but she knows his death was a consequence of his actions. She doesn’t think he deserved it, per se, but she’s just like Abby, trying to get revenge for her father’s death. If you can’t empathize with Abby, I can understand why you don’t like the game, but I would encourage you to try. I found all of the characters to be very well written and very much like real people.

That’s my essay. The gameplay is also very fun and the graphics are stunning.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Firstly, I can understand why people disliked the game: there were some obvious continuity errors with certain characters and some character decisions were questionable given their previous actions in the first game. As well as that, the killing spree that Ellie goes on after the introduction could have been adjusted to fit better with the ending; it didn't really make sense for Ellie to do what she did in the end given everything she had done in the lead-up to it.
However, the story in itself whilst emotionally harrowing and uncomfortable to say the least, did achieve Naughty Dog's goal (which they were vocal about well before release). The ideas of the cycle of violence through the search for revenge was really well developed and was really effective. The attempt to end this cycle at the end of the game was handled poorly in the terms of player satisfaction, but really well in terms of demonstrating the impacts of endless violence and how Ellie actually achieved her greatest fear "of ending up alone."
Player satisfaction is obviously one of the most important points when critiquing a game and clearly there were some problems here, however they all served to further the story and Naughty Dog's goal. The improved gameplay mechanics and stunning graphics coupled with brutal gore and realism made for a really exciting, shocking and gruesome playthrough. The way that the different difficulties allowed for more versatility in gameplay and encounter options was really awesome and made re-playing the game on different difficulties really enjoyable. All of these features of the gameplay (graphics, realism, gore and mechanics) all served a purpose in Naughty Dog's overarching goal, and, coming to understand that, made the game more enjoyable because I was able to recognise the importance of my actions and the significance of the storyline.
The new (and old) characters that were introduced in the game were for the most part fleshed out and developed quite well. Ellie's companions, Dina and Jesse, were really well made characters who i was able to care for and feel emotionally attached to. Abby was a really surprising and rather difficult character to play as on my first playthrough. I thought that she was developed well, however it was still very difficult to get over what she had done in the beginning. Abby's friends, on the other hand seemed a bit rushed and unimportant to me. I didn't feel much connection to them when playing as both Ellie and Abby, their deaths were kind of dry and meaningless, with the only really impactful deaths being that of Owen and Mel. Even still, both of these characters were quite forgettable in my opinion, with their deaths only being impactful due to the significance of the pregnancy to both Ellie and Abby.
The environments and enemy factions were really awesome and well developed, with really interesting lore available to be found around the world. The gameplay environments for both characters were also really nicely made, however I kind of felt like Abby's portion of the game had more big set-pieces and exciting battles and events. I felt like this was a bit forced and stinted as it almost seemed like Abby's portion of the game was designed to be fun and memorable so that players would begin to like her character more. If this was the case then I would say that it backfired because it became kind of obvious and repetitive, making me almost like Abby less because i knew that she was being appeased by the developers.
Finally, a major problem for me was the way that Joel was killed off. Before the release I had kept away from the spoilers, but just from the trailers I knew that something big was going to happen to Joel and Ellie. The brutality and inhumane way that Joel was killed made it much more difficult for the player to build any empathy for and relate to Abby. As a result, it was difficult to play as her because the player already hated this character. So, I think Joel's death could have been handled better by the developers, which would have made it a bit easier to play as Abby and it would have seemed less forced.
Overall, I really enjoyed the game. The story was difficult, emotional, harrowing and real, and specific events that began the game were really tough to sit through especially as a lover of the first game. The world-building, gameplay, graphics, realism and most of the characters were really well made and truly enjoyable to experience. Naughty Dog's goal was really well fleshed out and made for a really interesting and thought-provoking story, however the ending did feel a bit forced and disappointing. I recommend the game, but make sure that you are open-minded and prepared for more than just your normal video game. It was much more philosophical and thought-provoking than I anticipated, and i loved it!

Everyone has their own viewpoints and the developers decision must be respected. I dreamed my own fantasy and I'm so happy with the results but I wish that Ellie had interest in a guy instead of a girl. That would be much more better.

This game has superb storytelling, graphics, gameplay and a huge amount of graphic violence. This game keeps you hook throughout its 20+ hour run time. Characters dynamics and interactions are almost as good as the relationship between Ellie and Joel. This games character development even makes you love side characters and even people you shouldn't. The only thing I can think of as a downside is Abbys section of the campaign could have been a separate thing like Left behind was in the first game as it took away from Ellie's story a wee bit even though that section was still fantastic. Last Of Us part 2 is a Worthy follow up to the amazing The Last Of Us. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphics, physics, animations: 10/10 best in the business. So many objects are movable and breakable. Bloaters crash through walls. Character animations are above anything in video games to date and interact with the environment. Great rope physics.

Gameplay, level design, sequences: 9/10 poorly paced gameplay segments. Amazing accessibility options. great scavenge, upgrade, combat gameplay loop. Hidden areas to explore to upgrade faster. Open world hubs towards beginning of game. Some simple neat puzzles. Some of the best 3rd person shooter combat of all time. Amazing AI. Last of us combat features no hip fire, some stun when you get hit, heavy weapon sway, low fire rate, slightly slow aiming down sights all to make it feel more grounded. So it may not be for everyone. It's not extremely innovative from the first game rather mostly fixed and more challenging on higher difficultues. You also play as another character half way through which makes you have to restart the upgrading. A few memerable sequences including some chases, escapes, skyscrapers, and boss fights.

Story: 5/10 poorly paced by adding flashbacks and skipping time. Characters motivated by petty revenge which is very hard to sympathize with. A lot of choices ellie and abby make or the way they act seem very inconsistent. With the way they all of a sudden feel remorse or let eachother live. Main character from the first game dies. That alone ruins the story for many people and was completely unnessacary.

Baldurs Gate 2 had it, Zelda OOT had it, quite a few others, but for those of you who know, you know why you're a gamer, and it's not for gaining levels and uber dominating pwnz others, it's for the immersion the story and the characters that take you on a journey to another world that you can breathe in and look around in.

The Last of Us had it, and the Last of Us 2 has it. Lovingly crafted and a tribute to gamers.

We live in Polarizing times, it's precient ND crafted a game that allows gamers to explore an alternatives side to an event or set of information. It's not for everyone and I found the Ellie Portion much more satisfying, though I love that we are getting this level of story immersion in a game.

Had we played Abby for more time before the Golf Club incident I think we would have been able to identify with her more. Use the flashbacks to let us play and identify with Abby before we hate her guts for destroying our beloved Character. It was a mistake to make Abby masculine in physical appearance, particularly with little to no explanation for why her physique was so unique in the game world. This design choice raised an already high bar for me to climb in order to identify with Abby's world and motivations.

Lean into the game, you will be rewarded.

Beyond minor gripes, the game was incredible. The gameplay was incredible. The hint system was incredible. The game stays with you after you play it, and draws you back in. Thank you Naughty Dog, I hope you guys lean into the challenge of effective story telling with your games. By far the most talented AAA studio on the planet right now.

Sure, Neil's leftist politics have left some brush strokes in this MasterpieceAs someone who played and beat the game before seeing any spoilers, I thoroughly loved this game. It surpassed the original as a sequel and built on the first across multiple facets; puzzles, combat and even dialogue prompts. I really don't see any of the plot holes people have been complaining about. Sure, Neil's leftist politics have left some brush strokes in this Masterpiece production, however the characters are far more than just their LGBT labels. There is representation without compromising on the fluidity of the story or the authenticity of the interactions.

I think the main reason so many people hate the game, is the leaks, which of course should NOT have happened. However, it's not too difficult to avoid having the game spoiled if you know what you are doing online. The second and more pressing issue is how a large portion of the game is spent playing as the antagonist character who kills off a character that is near and dear to the hearts of the audience. The game forces you to try to relate to a character you should naturally hate, and to feel bitterness for a character that you want to remember as this perfect character with no flaws. This is how the devs have made the game as true to life and as true to their characters as possible. In reality there aren't many people who you can say you love unconditionally, due to screw-ups or mishaps on their part. Furthermore, there isn't anybody you feel nothing but hate for. In most cases when you hate somebody, there is pity you feel as well. From my own personal life experience, I know this.

Without offence to any of the other reviewers or players, hating the game is as valid as loving it; everyone has an opinion. Perhaps people are hating the game for the wrong reasons. Going into the experience already having the story spoiled and having confirmation bias towards the game being bad. Perhaps a lot of the player-base don't have the same life experience and emotional acuity as others to fully comprehend that it's possible to hate somebody while relating to them. Therefore, they may be confusing hate for a character with their feelings for the game.

This franchise is designed to stir up these kinds of emotions. NaughtyDog set out to make you hate the antagonist character and did a damn good job based on how much backlash the game is getting. They took a risk; it didn't pay off for the majority. People didn't interpret the story the way they wanted them too. Ultimately it was a story of the selfish elements of forgiveness and how harbouring hate can only lead to guilt and losing the people close to you.

That is the message I interpreted from the story, such was made loud and clear the more I thought back on my experience throughout the game, and is echoed not just in main development arcs, but also in smaller dialogue details too.

So, to those of you who failed to enjoy the game as intended, I forgive your oversight. I hope that anybody who reads this may see the game through my lens and see a different perspective. They may find themselves playing through it again with this in mind and appreciating it.

As for the ending, people claiming it wasn't true to the universe or Ellie's character for it to have ended the way it did... I disagree; you are forgetting that she has spent the last 5 years growing up in a relatively peaceful environment of Jackson, surrounded by nothing but community, friends, and intimate relationships. So, to those of you who say it was not true to her character, look again, and think on what I have stated here.

Now that the elephant is out of the room I can talk about the fun stuff! The graphical detail,
and sound design is stunning. I only wish the PS4 could run it at higher than 60fps, as at times, panning the camera in big open areas created some stutter, even disabling motion blur didn't alleviate.

The combat and puzzles are a vast improvement on the first game. I was getting frustrated with some encounters, but very much in a positive way: "Of course that stupid ***** flanked me, why are they so smart, ****!". The complexity and difficulty really stressed the near misses and desperation of the characters.

I will also be the first to admit that the game is buggy. At one point after I messed with the camera settings, if i backed up into a corner a lot of the environment would disappear allowing me to see where infected or enemy AI were lurking. The AI itself is also buggy at times, with allies walking in front of you as you line up a shot, and enemy AI repeating dialogue prompts on loop. Did it ruin the experience? No, it’s a nit-pick at smaller details. The main issue people have is with the story, which I sincerely hope with another playthrough people will see things in a different light.

Overall, what a rollercoaster of emotions. Even if the negative reviews put you off, I would strongly recommend playing the game at least once. There are lessons to be learnt here.

    Great job NaughtyDog!

    - While hidden, AI is very predictable with their movements. All stealth games have this issue though.
    - Can't switch which side of the shoulder your camera is on, only while aiming you can.
    - The story is really slow in the bulk of the game and a bit lackluster.
    - Too much of the story felt like you was doing detours, like getting fuel or medical supplies.
    - I felt a lot of my time was looking for loot and it's like I needed to do it even though it got old.
    - The story going forwards and backwards in time too often hurts the pacing of the story.
= The story isn't as good as the first game and even though the graphics are better, the image looks horrible with the film grain. You can turn the grain off while in photo mode and it's sad because the game looks so much better with it off, It's such a shame. It's still a very good game, but it's not been able to grip me like the first one did.

    Summary:
    - The plot is thought-provoking. Yes, there are more questionable story twists than we had in the first part. Yes, some of the characters are controversial. Nevertheless, it's one of the most mature stories for the game industry.
    - Visual graphics are stunning—the excellent final for the PS4 generation.
    - My applause to all the actors. All characters look and sound like real people. And yes, to all the haters of the exact actress. Grow up. Her role is the best in this story.
    - Music. Like in the first part. No other words needed.
    - Gameplay. Still interesting to explore and fight. Developers took some of their tricks from other games, like rope and grass gameplay from Uncharted 4, but it's great. These new (old) features freshened up the gameplay.
    - The team did an insane work with small details like face animation, physics, objects destruction, etc. You need to see it with your own eyes.

To sum up. Even if you find some characters, their decisions, or plot twists controversial; you still will be satisfied with this game. It's definitely not a zero/1/2 points like whiners say. If you love single players games, don't make them ruin your day. I wish everyone play the second part and enjoy the game.

Boycott with your wallet all you want, but review bombing an excellent game in terms of technical standpoint just shows how immature the gaming community is. Expand

It has some of the best visuals I have ever seen in a videogame. The environments, graphics, animations, effects all look amazing. I took so many screenshots with the games photo-mode, which has a lot of interesting things to play around with and you can easily spend hours of the game on it. With photo-mode you realise just how deep the detail in the game is. Also has amazing sound design and soundtrack. The zombies just look amazing like in the first, with some subtle redisgns and improvements from the first. Cutscenes look amazing, you can see the idividual features on peoples faces, scars, sweat, ect. Visuals in video games are as important as cinematography in films. People like to treat this as a side point, but video games are a visual medium. I could go on about how amazing the visuals are for a long time.
I love stealth games and this one is very solid. Levels are large with several parts and approaches. Enemies behave like actual human beings, constantly looking around them, making them more challenging to avoid and encounter (very different from the usual robotic behaviour of enemies in stealth games). Stealth take-downs are brutal, with characters choking, slitting throat, ect. You have a lot of tools to play around with, you can plant mines, unleash the infected on your enemies, use explosive arrows. It certainly isn't the greatest stealth game ever made by any means, but it is miles above what I expected. It had so many tense situations, with creative mechanics like dogs sniffing your scent. The human and infected enemy types are greatly improved over the first and behave in more organic, life like ways.
The combat is pretty tense, enemies go around, flank, ect. So many tense firefights in this one, like one time I was pinned by a sniper and prone on the ground and all the enemies stormed into the room at once and I had to shoot them while lying on my back, it was like a scene out of a film. I really enjoyed the game-play overall, interesting AI kept the stealth and combat situations interesting. The gameplay is similair to the first, but it's just so much better. I love the brutality of the visuals and the fighting, I was afraid that they might tone down on the violence but this one ramps it up. It certainly isn't the greatest stealth/shooter ever made, but it's very solid and several moments of the game that felt like they were scripted were completely organic. It feels like a film, similar to the first one. The visuals and game-play are top notch. The levels had tonnes of cool little details in them too, like how one area you go through is an abandoned library and has a kids section with tonnes of paintings on the wall.

I loved the story in this one as well and the entire cast of characters were well written and voice acted. I love how a major theme in the first game is luck, Joel and Ellie survive primarily because of luck alone. As Joel says luck runs out, the first game foreshadowed an event like Joel running into Abby, he got unlucky and payed the price for his actions in the first game. I love his death scene, it's like he knew the day was coming, when his luck would run out and his past would catch up with him. Similair to the line in the first game 'no matter how hard you try, you can't escape your past' and 'your luck runs out', his death reflects both those major themes from the first game.
I love that the story, like the first one, doesn't take sides. Joel is an anti-hero who killed a lot of people to save his 'daughter'. Although to Abby he was a villain, its a story thats open to interpretation, without the game ever pushing you one way or the other. It can be argued that Abby is the villain, she brutally murders Joel. However, Joel arguably destroys the chance of a cure to save his daughter, who he can't bare to lose a second time. The line where Ellie calls Joel an 'old fossil' is a nod to Sarah's birthday card to Joel and Joel taking her to a museum shows that she has become a surrogate daughter to him, who he adopted as a replacement for Sarah. Perhaps then Joel is selfish, he acts against Ellie's wishes and we clearly see that he uses her as a replacement daughter. I'm about to run the word count but I love the story cause it's morally complex and open to interpretation. Abby kills and tortures, so does Joel and Ellie, they do what they have to to survive. All three protagonists act in selfish ways, these are possibly the only good examples of well written anti-hero protagonists I can think of in videogames. You can interpret Abby/Joel/Ellie as a villain or as a hero and that's why I love it. Abby isn't a cartoon evil villain, you see she has compassion and care for other human beings, just like Joel and Ellie. To her Joel is an evil man who ruins her world. I empathise with her just as much as Joel and Ellie in the first. WORDCOUNT HIT :(

Aside from the story, the technical achievements of the game objectively are improvements over what was offered in Part I- gameplay mechanics, environments, visuals, sound, and acting (facial animations are insane), and enemy AI. To sum up my take on this game, I experienced a necessary, satisfying, and compelling continuation of the story provided in Part I. I cannot imagine a more fitting continuation of the story, and I recommend this game to anyone who enjoyed Part I. Expand

As a fan of the first The Last of Us and Uncharted series, I've been devasted to see what direction naughty dog has taken to drive the narrative of this game, I was afraid it wouldn't work.
It's the most ambitious and the least fun game that the studio ever has created.
Ambition... That word is accurate when you look at the scope, volume, and polish of this game, but unfortunately, that is not what I mean.

The narrative that this game is trying to sell is devilishly difficult to pull off. As you see by review bombing it's not one that everyone will get.
For me, it worked, and I'm astonished it did!

I think that everyone who called this game a hot piece of garbage regards the story stayed closed for what that game has to offer.
It forces you to grow as a person and a player, you will resist and you won't like it.
But if you stay open it will change you.

I never felt so many strong emotions playing a video game, part I did it as well, but there was light.
Part II is not afraid to leave you in darkness, by doing so it is a much richer experience.

    So should you play it?
No - If you liked part I, you think it was a perfect end to this story and want to leave this universe with a sense of accomplishment and closure.

Yes - if you are not afraid to be dragged through hell ride of fear, pain, excitement, and sadness.
AND CAN STAY OPEN FOR THOSE EMOTIONS

    It is worth it.

Music plays a central role not only enhancing the mood, but also humanizing the world and characters. If you manage to find a guitar lying around, Ellie can practice for a bit, offering a nice distraction from the unforgiving elements. Like the original, companions accompany you periodically on the journey. During combat they occasionally help out by dispatching enemies, but problems similar to the original game are still present. While partner movements aren't as awkward as before, they still feel artificial as they bounce around in an effort to follow your lead. When not engaged in combat however, they offer touching moments, levity, and insight into the world. Countless conversations range from mundane to deeply personal and further contribute to the incredible storytelling. The Last of Us Part II presents an absolutely crucial and challenging narrative about love and hate. Characters have convincing motivations that leave you thinking about more than what’s in front of you. The places it takes you to are awe-inspiring to explore, with unrivaled attention to detail, and although the combat is somewhat forgiving, it remains thrilling throughout much of the harrowing journey. The Last of Us Part II leaves a deep, emotional impact, and this unforgettable continuation should not be missed. Expand

Graphics, gun play and levels are really great in this one. The attention to detail is really high, immersing you even more in the story. The story is very central to this game and its portioned out in a good way through out the game.

So to the bad parts. The game is to long, a shorter version would have been more efficient. The actual gameplay also gets quite repetitive even if they do mix it up with some variations in enemies, you use the same tactics to take them all out. Variation in gameplay is mainly "cosmetic", different looking enemies and new environments. A few new gun here and there, but it is still very focused on sneaking. The sneaking mechanic is good, but to build such a long game around it ends up hurting the game a bit.
I feelt that the gun-selection was a bit clunky as well, did not quite like that.
There are also a fair couple of flashbacks and scenes that add nothing/little to the story and are just quite dull to sit through.
The story could have evolved better, the game is split in 2 sections - first as Ellie for 3 days, then your reset back 3 days and plays as Abby (about 50/50 split playing both characters). Your left in kind of a cliff-hanger from Ellie, which made me feel like I just wanted to "catch up" to the third day to see what happens. I think it would have made more sense to play perhaps one day as Abby, next as Ellie and so on to mix it up and keep the story a bit more interesting.

But even with the flaws, the game is still a great game. Its not a "one of a kind masterpiece" - but it is good.

Albeit the gameplay felt slightly old, with a few tropes we've seen before, the story never ceases to hurt and engage you, first by antagonizing your enemies, and then, believably and effortlesly convincing you of their humanity, making you question your heroes and purpouse and reflecting on the purpouse of revenge and the power of perspective. We're so used to a world of videogames focused on brainless blind-button-mashing-murder, that is refreshing when certain games bring about the oportunity to reflect - reminding me of Undertale in this subject.
Due to the gameplay, for about 80% of the game it felt like a solid 8, 8.5, but the final stretch was just devastating, surely a game i won't ever forget. This not only expands on the legacy of the first game, but sets a new standard for the series, and for video game storytelling and acting in general.

PS. All you whiny kids who didnt play the game, or cant handle the fact gender issues are a fact of life, or feel entitled to have your perspective on these characters persist in your fantasies, go write fan fiction, and not metacritic reviews. Of go play CoD and just give up on growing up. Anyone giving this game less than a 7 is acting in bad faith - the game is bugless, the gameplay is at the very least enjoyable, the acting is top-notch and the writing is phenomenal (NO EXPOSITION PEOPLE, OMG)

I know why many people hate this game. It took me 27 hours to complete, which took more than two weeks, I gave myself some time to think about what the hell is happening. I think I know why people hate this game.
Let's be honest, everyone liked Joel and stuff, but could never understand his decision from the first part. He killed people, many people, some innocent some not. But most of all, he killed the hope that humanity had, the hope of getting things back to normal. And many people hated him for that. This part is about revenge, where things go ugly and the people who suffer the most are always innocent. Ellie and Abby are so similar yet so different. The game shows you that this revenge path is a circle, which will unavoidably lead to more suffering and pain. People who did not like this game just did not try to understand it. I see so many reviews about how they will not complete the game, how they are not willing to sympathise with Abby and listen to her part of the story. This game is not about LGBT, muscular woman, pregnant woman or transgenders. If you just try to listen to whatever this game is trying to teach you, wait for a bit and carry on playing till the very end, you will see that the details of the lgbt and all of that does not matter. Lev and Yara are amazing characters no matter what.
Do not ruin your game experience with limiting your emotion spectrum to the level of a tea bag. Listen first to what game is trying to teach you and then write your review.
The reason why I liked this game is very simple yet it took me to realise that. This game is deep. It tells you so much yet leaves the analytical part to yourself. This is why many people thought that the game is wrong. They just never gave it a second thought. And this game needs more than just one extra thought. I read many comments and saw enough reviews to understand that many people just treated it as a game, not the story that you analyse and understand, just another game. I see that many people did not understand what the first part was all about and they carried this misunderstandings to the second part and therefore understood nothing and ended up hating the game and ruining one of the best playing experiences you can ever have just playing a game.
If you are ready to listen, to learn about what the game is trying to tell you, if you have patience to learn then you should definitely give this game a go. I would recommend it to anyone, except for kids, this game has way to many violence and is too deep for kids to play, they will not understand **** about this game and end up writing a negative review.
Do not play this game if you are dumb as **** and have no sympathy towards others or hate anything that has to do with transgenders or gay people. But i think this limitations can be applied to any game, so just go to school and do your homework bro

Like many people I didn't think The Last of Us needed a sequel. I am pleased to say however that The Last of Us 2 is a really special and unrivalled experience.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
